Product Description
This book provides the first in-depth examination of a representative range of contemporary Colombian cultural engagements with the conflicts known simply as La Violencia that began in Colombia in the late 1940s. These include Gustavo Alvarez Gardeazábal's now classic revision of the 'novela de la Violencia', the autobiographical cycle of acclaimed author Fernando Vallejo, versions of the testimonio by Alfredo Molano and internationally renowned novelist Laura Restrepo, as well as cinematic works by Carlos Mayolo and Luis Ospina. These cultural icons, many of whom are remarkably understudied, show how the heterogeneity of social and cultural processes condensed in La Violencia demands a deconstruction of 'violence' in Colombian culture. This argument is developed in dialogue with European and Latin American cultural theory and contributes to theoretical debates surrounding issues of memory and mourning developed in other Latin American contexts. The narratives explored in this book provide alternatives to abstract historicism and show us how to imagine ways out of deeply rooted cycles of violence. Yet their insistence on haunting and spectres signals the problems besetting the task of mourning in Colombia, positing history rather than psychology as a remainder that troubles efforts to forge collective memories and enact social reconciliation. ... Product Description
The music of Colombia is an expression of the Colombianculture, which contains diverse Music genres, traditionaland moderns according with the features of each geographicregion; although it is frequent to find different musicalstyles in the same region. The diversity in musicalexpressions found in Colombia can be seen as the result ofa mixture of African, native Indigenous, European(especially Spanish) influences, as well as more modernAmerican and Caribbean musical forms, such as Trinidadian,Cuban, and Jamaican. In a globalised world, many musiciansare fusing traditional music with other styles (usuallystyles from the popular music genres). While this is notnecessarily a bad thing, it is no longer traditional musicsince it is not entirely based on local culture, beinginfluenced by the music that it has been fused with. As aresult traditional music tends to be found in a pre- commercial setting. While traditional music continues toevolve today, but generally as a continuation of the musicfrom a pre-globalised culture. Styles like vallenato andporro were especially influential. ... Product Description
Many aspects of Colombian culture can be traced back to the culture of Spain of the sixteenth century and its collision with Colombia's native civilizations (see: Muisca, Tayrona). The Spanish brought Catholicism, African slaves, the feudal encomienda system, and a caste system that favored European-born whites. After independence from Spain, the criollos struggled to establish a pluralistic political system between conservative and liberal ideals. The conservatives supported the involvement of the Catholic Church in the state while liberals favored the separation of these. The conservatives managed to outsource public education to the Catholic Church and for many years the church controlled the country's education system. Both parties engaged in multiple civil wars resulting in a slow development of the country and the isolation of regions until the end of the 19th century. Ethno-racial groups maintained their ancestral heritage culture: whites tried to keep themselves, despite the growing number of illegitimate children of mixed African or indigenous ancestry. ... Excerpt: National Library of Colombia -The National Library of Colombia is generally considered to be the oldest national library in the Americas. It was founded at the end of the eighteenth century in 1777 by Viceroy Manuel De Guirior, who established the library in the city of Bogotá. The original collection of the library consisted of books expropriated from the Jesuit community, which had been expelled from all the dominions of the Spanish Empire, as a result of the 1767 order of King Charles III of Spain. In 1825, due to the work of Francisco de Paula Santander, the library was established at the campus of the Colegio de San Bartolomé and received its current name. On March 25, 1834, the first legal deposit law was decreed, which required that all copies of printed material in the country be sent to the library for storage. This law set the objective of the library, which then became the sole entity in charge of maintaining the bibliographic heritage of the nation. Women deliver themselves from subjugation by recovering their voices, by educating themselves, and by speaking out, in unison, against forces that have kept them under heel. The scope of Colombian Women: The Struggle Out of Silence is both personal and global: personal to the interviewees and to Elena GarcZs herself, as she tells her own story; and global, in that many features of the patriarchy and its dysfunction extend well beyond the borders of Colombia. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Disagree
Must say I disagree with the review written above. What this book is: An introduction (160 pages) to the history, litterature, art and cinema of Colombia. What this book isn't: A travell guide, it offers background, for updated travellers info buy a proper guide. I read it before going to C., and found it helpful trying to orientate myself in this diverse country. You'll need additional books, ie lonely planet/footprint/rough guide, Penguins history of south america etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Title does not reflect the content
When I purchased this book I expected it to give an insight into the culture and customs of Colombia. This book only recites dates and statistics never actually going into any day-to-day customs or cultural insights.Very dry and uninteresting unless you plan on writing a paper for a college class.Obviously this book is written for someone who never plans to go to Colombia. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The sombrero vueltiao or sombrero vueltiado (Colombian Spanish for hat with laps) is a traditional hat from Colombia and one of its symbols. It is made out of Gynerium sagittatum known locally as caña flecha, a type of cane that grows in the region. The word vueltiao is a Colombian regionalism from the northern Caribbean Region and the area surrounding the Magdalena River basin that originates in the word for "lap" (Spanish:vuelta), and arose due to the way the hat is made. Vueltiao is correctly spelled volteado; however, the altered spelling reflects the actual pronunciation. The quality of the hat is determined by the number of "laps" used and its bending flexibility. The more flexible the hat is, the higher quality it is. ... Read more

Product Description

Long associated with the pejorative clichés of the drug-trafficking trade and political violence, contemporary Colombia has been unfairly stigmatized. In this pioneering study of the Miami music industry and Miami’s growing Colombian community, María Elena Cepeda boldly asserts that popular music provides an alternative common space for imagining and enacting Colombian identity. Using an interdisciplinary analysis of popular media, music, and music video, Cepeda teases out issues of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and transnational identity in the Latino/a music industry and among its most renowned rock en español, pop, and vallenato stars.

Musical ImagiNation provides an overview of the ongoing Colombian political and economic crisis and the dynamics of Colombian immigration to metropolitan Miami. More notably, placed in this context, the book discusses the creative work and media personas of talented Colombian artists Shakira, Andrea Echeverri of Aterciopelados, and Carlos Vives. In her examination of the transnational figures and music that illuminate the recent shifts in the meanings attached to Colombian identity both in the United States and Latin America, Cepeda argues that music is a powerful arbitrator of memory and transnational identity.
