1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing guide
I received the book and intend to return it as it is not useful. There are many colleges that are missing. For example, I know of one college nearby that has a special program for LD students, and this college is not even mentioned! Like another person stated, the book is dry and does not give personalized information on the colleges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Guidance for LD College Applicants
Lists over 1,000 2 and 4 year colleges that welcome students with learning disabilities.Includes schools that offer services and comprehensive programs.CD-ROM and quick-reference chart provided.Entries for colleges include student support services, number of students with LD and/or ADD, staff information, founding date of LD services, and number of staff members.Special services such as academic advising, counseling services, remediaiton of basic skills, subject area tutoring, special courses, auxilliary aids, and services are described. For colleges with comprehensive programs, the book lists special fees and details of the program. The book states if services are available to graduate students.

Review adapted from Learning A Living; A Guide to Planning Your Career and Finding A Job for People with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Dyslexia

2-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
I guess I ordered this book thinking it would help with a pretty normal ADD kid; instead it focuses on kids who are severely disabled, is very dry reading, and not helpful unless you have a child with a true disability.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too many colleges are not included; none are rated
This is one of very few large directories available which deal with LD programs/services forcollege students. However, it combines 2-year and 4-year colleges so the number of colleges included is misleading.I wantedto see more about 4-year colleges.Additionally, there were no HBCUsincluded at all. Finally, I would have appreciated some kind of rating of"quality."

4-0 out of 5 stars a great guide to colleges for students with special needs
a terrific resource for finding the right schools for students who are challenged and in need of special programs ... Read more

Product Description
A volume in Critical Concerns in BlindnessSeries Editor Edward C. Bell, Louisiana Tech UniversityAll parents hope for an independent future for their blind/visually impaired child. To turn thathope into a reality, parents need to understand the scope of skill development that must beaddressed, along with the importance of equal expectations for the child's development, propertraining, and opportunity to practice and develop skills. But what if expectations are low, training in blindness skills is scanty or even absent, and overprotection prevents the blind/VIchild from learning and practicing skills? The idea of an independent future can remain adistant dream. The purpose of this book is to guide parents and teachers in fostering the blind/visually impaired child's skill development in suchcritical areas as academics, independent movement and travel, social interaction, daily living, and self-advocacy, so that he or she willtruly be on the road to an independent future. A practical, easy to use guide, written in plain English, the book warns about commonproblem areas and provides ideas for getting and keeping the child's education and development on track. It highlights the interplaybetween skills and competence, confidence, self-respect, and the respect of others.Of the small number of books and videos available on the subject, most were written by professionals in the field and many beginwith the supposition that blindness is at best sad and at worst tragic. Few --maybe none --have the ardent passion for independence thatthe parent of a blind/visually impaired child brings to the subject. Instead of overwhelming parents and teachers with the difficulty ofthe undertaking before them, Getting Ready for College Begins in Third Grade will inspire their confidence and enthusiasm for the taskat hand. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and educational read
To be honest I never actually managed to read this book from cover to cover. However, I have found the book to be useful and regularly refer to it when I have questions. The first few chapters of the book, reads like someone's thesis research and may not be all that interesting if you're just looking for useful tips and strategies. However, further into the book one can find some very useful information. For example Chapter 9 looks at the implications of being a post-secondary student with ADD. In Chapter 10 the focus is on study skills for the ADD student. Chapter 11 looks at some of the ADD related implications for educators. Also the back of the book has a thick appendix section and is filled with information for students, administrators, as well as instructors. If you are a student or educator who's interested in post-secondary ADHD issues and are interested in research on the topic, then this book is worth owning. I can't say that this book is a must-have for the average ADHD student, but is a worthwhile purchase if you are seriously interested in the topic of ADD in the post secondary environment. ... Product Description
Unlocking Potential is an indispensable tool for high school students with learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) preparing for the world of postsecondary education and employment. It is brimming with the latest information on LD and AD/HD, as well as advice, practical tips, and resources designed to make their transition from high school a success. From selecting and applying to a program to setting and achieving goals, this book leads them on their way.

Written by a team of over 20 professionals in the field of postsecondary transition, Unlocking Potential helps people recognize their own learning strengths and weakness, which is the first step to managing their disability. As the authors stress, people with LD and AD/HD are most successful when they make modifications and seek counseling that supports their unique needs. The book offers strategies for overcoming problem areas such as time management, organizational skills, note taking, test taking, and establishing goals.

Unlocking Potential also promotes the concept of self-determination-an individual's ability to define and achieve goals based on knowing and valuing oneself. A person is more likely to attain desired goals when he or she is a strong self-advocate.Finally, the comprehensive listings of resources at the end of each chapter are one of the book's most valuable features with recommended books, fact sheets, video/audio materials, and support organizations.

This new edition of Unlocking Potential is based on a book with the same title by Barbara Scheiber and Jeanne Talpers, published by Adler & Adler in 1985.The writing team for the Woodbine House edition is completely new, as is the book's content, reflecting numerous changes in special education laws, transition planning, and a growing awareness of LD and AD/HD.It's a book that will help a new generation of young people recognize and achieve their potential. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Practical, creative approaches for life after high school.
This book is a useful resource for older high school students and young adults dealing with the transition between adolescence and adulthood. Each chapter is laid out so that the important information is easy to find. The sections dispense with long details. For those who want more information on a particular subject, the end of each chapter has a list of relevant resources.

The book shows how individuals with learning disabilities and AD/HD can plan constructively for college or work. There are chapters on legal issues, psychological testing, educational strategies and job choices.

Often high school students are made to feel that traditional college is the only choice. This book takes a positive, affirming look at all the alternatives.

I have only one criticism of this excellent book. There should have been some medical input on the section on AD/HD. The brief section on medication was clearly not written by a psychiatrist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life beyond high school for students with A.D.D. or L.D.
I have a son who is a junior in high school. He has a learning disability and an attention deficit disorder. While the classroom hasn't always been an easy environment for him, it has at least been a predictable one. But with college or possibly the work force just ahead, I worry about the supports that will be available to him as he transition to life beyond high school.

"Unlocking Potential" helps alleviate a lot of that worry by offering sound, practical advice as I help prepare our son for the next stage of his life. Advice includes informtaion on helping your child whether he is obtaining a 4-year degree or entering the military, becoming an apprentice or getting a job.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this well-organized, easy-to-read book and would recommend it to anyone dealing with A.D.D. or a learning disability. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Detail
This book claims to be a guide for lawyers among others but fails to give case citations or even case names in the one section that is written by a lawyer. This leaves the inquisitive reader to try and decipher which federal case is being referred to based on the fact description or holding. There must be better choices on this topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shelby Keiser notwithstanding, this book is helpful
I understand the ire of a person who resents having to be compared with the general population, rather than to a specialized group the person wishes to become a member of, to have accommodations, but I feel that in her chapter on testing accommodations she does explain her viewpoint and the legal underpinnings of her opinion. In general, this book is a very good guide to documentation standards, provides forms that are useful, and is well worth the money as a reference book. Product Description
Facilitated communication is a cause of great controversy in the world of special education. Proponents claim that the technique of allowing persons with autism, Downs syndrome, and other pervasive developmental disorders to type their thoughts on a computer keyboard allows for the release of previously unknown intelligence and communicative abilities; detractors claim that it is a hoax whose validity is yet to be proven. With this book, Douglas Biklen and Donald Cardinal present a collection of studies providing evidence in support of facilitated communication, including a study carried out by a person who uses facilitated communication, Eugene Marcus, a young man with autism. Other contributors include: Darlene Hanson, John Wakeham, Shaswati Saha, Chris Kliewer, Stacey Baldac, Carl Parsons, Marjorie Olney, Mayer Shevin, Michael J. Salomon Weiss, Sheldon H. Wagner, and Rosemary Crossley. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling evidence supporting Facilitated Communication
Contested Words, Contested Science presents useful, reasonable evidence of the validity of Facilitated Communication, which serves to highlight the absurdity of the arguments that claim there is no such evidence. The most definitive evidence may be the growing number of individuals who are demonstrating that through FC training they are eventually able to accomplish independent typing.Nonetheless, there are ways of looking at the method that show that those who continue to need support are able to express their own thoughts when facilitated properly.
This book is a must read for anyone who is willing to look carefully and thoughtfully at the possibilities that Facilitated Communication offers those individuals who do not speak or have very limited speech. While, to my knowledge, no one is claiming that FC is the answer for every such person, this book shows that FC can provide many with the ability to express themselves fully, opening up innumerable possibilities for a more satisfying life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone interested in disability.
Biklen's compilation brings together a collection of double-blind experimental evidence on the reality of facilitated communication that can only be ignored by those people (mainly psychologists) who feel that anypositive findings they find unwelcome are automatically suspect. useful forpeople who want to explore the possibility of taking a new view of thesignificance of communication handicap in intellectual disability andautism. (I've read the book, by the way: the last (anonymous) reviewerseems to have condemned it unread on the basis of its authorship on thegive-a-dog-a-bad-name-and-hang him principle).

1-0 out of 5 stars Possibly just a slight trace of bias?
Since Douglas Biklen is one of the foremost and most vocal proponents of FC, and since none of the essays in the book are written by the many scientists, researchers, parents and people with autism who have criticised FC, I wonder whether this book is really the best place to start for anyone genuinely interested in "unravelling the facilitated communication controversy". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good summation
Although the information is basic common sense, it does help to have it spelled out in an organized matter with issues and solutions. Was able to highlight topical info to discuss with someone with a short attention span! Bite sizes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone with ADHD
I found this book chock full of great strategies and advice for ADHD and school. The author has put his heart into this.I'm the mother of two teens with ADHD; I've read a ton of books on the subject but find this the most useful. This will really speak to you and give you strategies before problems pop up!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST ADD Book on the market
I was diagnosed with ADD late in high school and have been having one of the most difficult years of my life in my senior year of college. I recently began seeing a "ADD Counselor" at the health center to try and make the best of the semester but my workload has really gotten the best of me. I am pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering and am almost at the end of my rope! I have another grueling 2 years left of undergrad and my ability to see the light at the end of the tunnel has seriously diminished in the past few months.

I miraculously found the time to flip through this book at the University Bookstore for a split second before classes and nearly cried when I read through some of the things Michael Sandler wrote. I have read many, many books about coping with ADD and college/life/relationships etc. but I have never been so profoundly impacted by a ADD "self help" book. Mr Sandler's personal approach is a breath of fresh air in comparison to other aids I have tried. With every turn of the page, I kept thinking everything he was saying was exactly how I felt.
This is a guide to help us "ADDers" find the most effective approach to handling, not only academic life, but also personal relationships, finances, and emotional well being.

If you are a Teacher (HS or University level), seriously consider reading this in order to better understand some of the difficulties that about 10% of your students learn to make the most of.

If you are looking into this book for someone else, and ESPECIALLY if you are a parent of a student with ADD/ADHD do not hesitate to read this book. I bought the copy I was looking through and sent another to my parents.

If you yourself have ADD, just read 3 pages from any section and see what you think.

Bottom Line: This is a self help book from someone who has actually "been there done that". These are invaluable words of wisdom and ENCOURAGEMENT, and solid advice from someone who has traveled this bumpy road before.

    BEST OF LUCK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overall information, covers the student as a whole.
As a high school guidance counselor, I would definitely recommend this audio book to my ADD/ADHD students. The main reason I did not give it 5 stars was because of the repetitious music in between chapters.I found it extremely annoying to listen to over and over again! However, this audiobook offers a lot of good insight to students who struggle, and even adults who struggle in the workplace (although it is definitely geared towards high school kids who are off to a traditional 4-year college.I liked that it focused on the whole student, not just the academics. It covers areas such as exercise, diet, time management, and social aspects.
One thing I can recommend to those reading or listening to this book is as a high school sophomore or junior, ask your counselor about applying for extended time before you take SAT's or even PSAT's.This can help a great deal, since the test is timed, and most students end up running out of time.
I did not agree with the author's opinion that students who truly struggle with the daily challenges of ADD should sign up for AP courses in high school. Most (not all, but most) of my students with ADD would not be able to handle the challenges of taking on an AP course, especially since it requires a great deal of independent work and high organizational skills.I do believe that ALL students should sign up for the most challenging classes they can possibly handle in high school, and honors courses are great if appropriate. You can still get into some great colleges if you do not have "AP" written on your transcript. For some students, AP's are just not realistic. But that's ok.
    Helpful information overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, practical, positive advice
As a psychologist working in a college disabled students service, I am always on the lookout for books and materials to use with/recommend to students."College Confidence" will now be high on our list. The information, the layout and, importantly, the attitude are all on target. ... Read more

    Product Description
''I am happy to finally see a book that applies the theory of multiple intelligences to the question of ADHD. Now educators have a broader perspective within which to view both the strengths and difficulties of students with attention and behavior issues, and a wider palette of strategies to help them succeed in school and in life.''
-- Thomas Armstrong, author of Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom

''Drawing on their wealth of experience, the authors present a comprehensive and inclusive methodology for working with ADHD students, and in my estimation, for all students. The implications for ADHD students in school and the world beyond school are profound. No parent or educator could read this book and not come away with renewed inspiration and useful tools for meeting the needs of this oft-neglected segment of our population. I'm keeping a copy on my desk this school year.''
-- From the Foreword by Bruce Campbell, teacher, developed a nationally acclaimed classroom model based upon Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences

''Capitalizing on years of research on child development and intelligence, the authors offer new strategies to help students learn. The theory of multiple intelligences (MI) enables educators to view children's strengths and tap into their intelligence profiles to help them learn. Good food for thought!''
-- Dr. Thomas R. Hoerr, head of the New City School, St. Louis, Missouri

This practical guide describes ways of working with learners diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by using Multiple Intelligences Theory. Written for all educators as well as parents, it examines curricular, instructional, school partnering, and leadership issues that may arise for these students in grades K-8. Supported by real-life examples, it presents constructive strategies to help teachers work with ADHD students in ways that honor their strengths and allow for meaningful inclusion in the general education classroom. As viewed through the lens of an MI curriculum, ADHD is not a disadvantage; it is an integral component of the way a student processes information and makes sense of the world.

    This thoroughly readable resource features:
    * An innovative application of MI Theory based on the authors' extensive research and their experience working with students, teachers, and administrators.
    * Practical, tested strategies and materials for teachers who work with one of today's most prevalent and challenging school populations.
    * Free online MIDAS assessments, one for the teacher and one for the student with ADHD.
    * Hundreds of case studies and examples that illustrate how MI Theory can apply to all students in a general education classroom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be in the hands of every child educator
Mindful Education for ADHD Students should be put in the hands of every child educator.Having been a classroom teacher and public school administrator, I am familiar with the feeling of inadequacy when planning strategies to address behavioral challenges. We're at a loss when looking for new ways to stimulate this special population of students. The theory of Multiple Intelligences enables teachers to motivate students and celebrate their strengths. At the same time, this book provides useful tools that address ADHD challenges and can be easily implemented into any teaching setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical stategies for teachers
As a retired professor, my first thought was that I would have asked my students in human development, and especially those entering the teaching profession, to read this book. It is practical and immensely useful whether you know a great deal about ADHD and Multiple Intelligences or not.Good teachers have always used numerous strategies to teach academics, but these authors have included an additional crucial component, the free online MI assessments which will increase any student's success rate.It was enlightening to read that most teachers have different MI strengths than the majority of students with ADHD and this material would have been a springboard for many lively discussions in my classrooms.Where was this book when I was teaching?Dr. Nancy Levine, developmental psychologist ...
