Product Description
A collection of real life drama anecdotes from colonial life during the 1950's and 60's in Central Africa. The book is written in real time today with 'flash backs' to amusing and/or terrifying events in the writer's past. Stories go from getting trapped down a deep pothole with five dead bodies, to facing the formidable Cape Buffalo. The writer has danced with a bull elephant, caught a crocodile with a fishing rod, swum with Hippos and been charged by a leopard. This book has a sequel - Wild Grass - to follow before December 1st - WATCH THIS SPACE! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Been there and read this!
I spent many enjoyable days at Bill Haast's amazing reptile attraction as a schoolkid in Florida, and found this book upon returning to Kentucky in the 5th grade. Not only was the book spellbinding, it was really cool to point out to my friends that I had been there in person.Mr. Haast was a spellbinding individual, and his work has saved countless lives and furthered out respect for many reptiles, particularly cobras. If you can afford it, this is a great addition to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cobras in his garden
The memory of reading this book as a 5th grader has stayed with me throughout my life. When I got my first car at the age of 17, I immediatly drove to the Miami Serpatarium to visit this amazing man. Truly one of my childhood heros.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rattlesnakes now in his garden
COBRAS IN HIS GARDEN is an excellant book, and was an inspiration to me throughout my life with my own interest in venomous snakes. To say the very least, I own quite a bit to Mr. Haast, and his wife Nancy. If you get the chance to visit Bill Haast today, you will most likely find him in his"garden", an acre and a half walled in rattlesnkae pit, completewith irragation system, and artificial turtle holes for the snakes. Thisworlds largest man made snake pit has several of Mr. Haast's favorateplants, and is mowed regularly by Nancy Haast. I look forward to someonewriting another book about Mr. Haast, and his many projects, not all snakerelated. But until then, THIS BOOK IS GREAT!My autographed copy is theonly book I own that is NEVER lent out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book, fascinating subject.
I met Bill Haast in 1982 when I was 13.The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it was written in 1965...and is in desperate need of an update. So much more has happened in 34 years

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most informative& exciting books I have ever read
I'm a 45 yr.old man & I checked this book out of the school library when I was in the 7th grade. I didn't know much about snakes at the time, but from the 1st page until the last, I couldn't put it down. I read it straight through the night! Not only was it educating, it read like a novel, there was not a dull moment in it! It sent me on a journey of fascination that will be with me all of my life. A lot of people have written books on snakes and reptiles, but William "Bill" Haast, takes you farther into sceintific areas, without boring or losing the reader, than any book I have ever read. He will dispell all of the rumours and myths, that most people beleive about snakes. He also takes you on a trip through his own personal triumphs & tragedies and learning experiences, that made him an expert in his field. This is a fascinating book for young or old, and I highly recommed it, whether you are fascinated, mystified, curious, or just plain afraid of snakes. A real eye-opener. David Boyd END ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - both a model and an educational text
This is a really well done idea - each turn of the page reveals different part's of a snake - musculatory, skeleton, digestive, skin, etc. in 3D and in color.Plus, each page has fascinating facts about snakes and their biology.Just keep in mind for inquisitive hands that the pieces cannot be removed from the book - they are not made to be assembled separately but only for show within the pages.

I would rate this a 5 star but for two detractions:a) the book gets dented and marked very easily on the outside corners (looks worn and well used after a few days) and b) the snake parts in 3D are very cheap and thin plastic that almost feel like they'd break if you breathed on them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even I learned things I didn't know!
This book is a great hands-on teaching tool. For anyone interested in snakes it gives information in touchable 3-D besides pictures and explanations. The book was in excellent condition and a real bargain. ... Read more
