Excellent Resource!

This book contains, as the title implies, seven complete Celtic alphabets, one of which is a reproduction of a lettering style used in the book of Kells, another a plain Celtic style calligraphy, and five other sets,decorated with spirals, birds, hounds and a variety of Celtic knots. Excellent Compilation of Japanese Stencils
This is an excellent compilation of 168 Japanese stencil images. The CD-ROM images were scanned at 600dpi and are available in six different formats (TIFF, PICT, EPS, BMP, JPEG and GIF). You can use the CD on Windows 95-98 or a Macintosh. The primary subject matter is nature (pine boughs, iris, bamboo, birds, peony, morning glory, chrysanthemums, carp, etc.), and some of the images appear to be influenced by Okinawan bingata. To use the images for silk screening, you will want to clean up the parts where the tiny silk threads were used to hold the parts of the original stencil together. My CD-ROM was in perfect condition. Highly recommended.

Good collection, some issues
I like Dover's clip art collections. Not only do they (and the Japanese Stencil Design collection is among them) offer a variety of file formats both raster and vector for each and every image, these are named simply and organized well. The images are line art (in black and white) ready for press use. Unfortunately the disk I received has a problem with the files in TIF format... some sort of disk or directory error prevents access to them, and the system locks up. So that aside, there are plenty of other formats of these images available. I also find myself a little annoyed that Dover wants to install an image manager in order for me to access the disk. Absolutely unnecessary clutter in my programs folder that performs no useful function outside of accessing their disks. However,the uninstall feature works too.
If you are seeking a clip art source for these kinds of designs, this is an excellent, flexible, low-cost solution. Don't be alarmed at the relatively low 3 star rating I clicked. I don't get excited about things easily.

Decent
Not as many pictures to choose from when compared to the thicker, more expensive clip art books Dover has to offer, but will satisfy you if you're looking for some quick graphics of ships and seamen.

Son O The Seven Seas
This book is just strewn throughout with great nautical illustrations of every kind, from sea creatures to ocean liners to seashells to lighthouses to deep sea divers; just great clip-art of everything nautical for anyone interested in the subject. Because some of the illustrations are small (only about 10% of them) and randomly placed on the pages, almost wedged between other pictures, you have to really take time to scan the pages to notice all the great illustrations. This book is fun and educational as well because many of the illustrations are detailed. I love this book and recommended it.

Nautical illustrationsaccesses a treasure trove of 19th Century engravers art. What few people realise is the wonderful artistry of the wood and metal engravers of the 19th Century. Each illustration was rendered by hand on the end grain of wooden blocks, steel or copper. Some of these illustrations were copied over and over by the engraver working 12 hours a day in poorly lite attics far removed for the scene of action. So it is a marvel that theyhave survived (the original plates/blocks were destroyed over a 100 years ago). Paper impressions on decaying material are a marvel to see reproduced in this form. The book is a 1970's style layout for literally "cut and paste" illustration, this at least gives a good base for photocopy or scanning. The CD is a great resource for the computer designer.
