A Great Introduction To Classical Comedy
Robert W. Corrigan has complied a wonderful balance of Greek and Roman comedies.The collection is ideal for anyone interested in an overview of classical comedy or wishing to explore the roots of modern comedy.

Aristophanes' "Lysistrata" and "The Birds," andMenander's "The Grouch" represent the Greek plays."TheMenaechmi" (sometimes called 'The Brother's Menaechmi') and"Mostellaria" (sometimes called 'The Haunted House' or 'TheGhost')" by Plautus and "The Self Tormentor" by Terencerepresent the Roman plays.

The plays themselves are a wonderful study ofcomedy from it's dramatic origins to the Roman's translations of Greek"New Comedy."Students of Shakespeare and renaissance drama willfind this book especially useful as "The Menaechmi" is the sourceof Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" and plays like "TheGrouch" and "The Self Tormentor" greatly influenced theFrench comic playwright, Jean-Baptiste Moliere.

The introductions scribedby Corrigan are outstanding.A master of ancient drama, he has a passionthat creeps into all his essays.Unfortunately, the introductions by thetranslators sometimes fail to relate to the boarder subject of comedy andleave a little to be desired.

Regarding the translations themselves, fourdifferent authors have translated the six plays and some are better thanothers.Walter Kerr's translation of "The Birds" is the best ofthe collection.Palmer Bovie's translations of the three Roman plays aresolid and reflect Plautus' word-play well (which also influencedShakespeare).

My only criticism of the book is that some of theintroductions are now dated by references to several Hollywood comedies andBroadway plays that might be obscure unless you have a background in thesesubjects.However, the book is for the plays themselves and the playsthemselves are delightful.Overall, I recommend this collection asintroduction to ancient comedy. ... Ingalls may very well have been the greatest Sanskritist of the 20th century.Harvard's Wales Professor for more than thirty oddyears, he mentored more than he wrote but his fine scholarship in Indology is considered among the greatest efforts of our age, including this beautiful collection from the Subhasitaratnakosa.I would recommend you ignore the maglinantly ignorant, impenetrably stupid review above and read this as one of the most authentic and valuable contributions to Sanskrit literature in translation currently available. ... The Price is Wrong!
$52.00 for a Kindle version of this book is just WRONG.There is no paper.There is no stocking fee.There is no handling.I will not pay $52.00 for someones opinion of a book and if you do not have a Kindle and are paying over $100.00 you are out of your mind!

Routledge should be ashamed of the price
This appears to be an important book about a fascinating poem. But the price, $75 for a short book, is an insult to people who love poetry. It assumes that only academics or people who have access to a university library should be able to read this book. I am going to avoid buying books from Routledge as much as possible until they rethink their pricing.

I hope the author continues to work and finds a new publisher, one that will price books so that the general public can buy them.

From Old Comedy, 5th century, we have fragments of one play each of Epicharmus, Cratinus, Pherecrates, Eupolis, and Plato; some fragments of Aristophanes; and unassignable fragments. From Middle Comedy and New Comedy, 4th and 3rd centuries, are twenty-six items including at least three by Menander and one each by Philemon, Timocles, and Straton. From mimes there are a fragment of Sophron and six unassignable, including 112 lines of clownish doings by the Indian Ocean. The lyric poetry, 7th century BCE–4th CE, twenty-one mostly anonymous items, includes some of Sappho, Corinna, Pindar, Philicus, fragments of dithyrambic poetry, hymns, songs and so on. There are seventeen examples of elegiac and iambic, 7th century BCE–3rd CE, including some Mimnermus, Amyntas, Leonidas, Antipater of Sidon, and Posidippus. A Festival of Greek Poetry.
This edition is not a book but a library. It shows us the almost uncountable amount of writers who published in Antiquity but who are unknown by most of the readers. As in all Loeb Editions the original Greek text is included alongside the translations. The notes on the text - both Greek and translations - are conveniently placed at the end of the page.

Of the papyri found in Egypt which have yielded fragments large and small of ancient literary authors, in this volume III is offered Greek poetry. From tragedy, 5th-4th centuries BC, are included fragments of 2 plays (one a satyr play) by Aeschylos , of 5 by Sophocles (two of them satyric including more than 300 lines of the 'Ichneutai', 'Searches'); of 10 by Euripides (including nearly 350 lines of 'Hypsipyle'); of one by Ion. From Old Comedy, 5th century, we have fragments of one play each of Epicharmus, Cratinus, Pherecrates, Eupolis, and Plato, and some fragments of Aristhophanes.
