Product Description
THE HIDDEN EPIDEMIC There are legions, literally millions upon millions of people, living in pain and suffering in silence and is the number one reason for doctor visits in the U.S. and nothing else even comes close. The number of people is staggering: 200 million who suffer pain on some regular basis, at least once a month, and 92 million people in unrelenting, chronic pain every day without letup seven days a week. Everything to be found regarding dealing with pain revolves around managing, coping with, or in some way learning how to live with pain. There is not a word to be found as regards how one might go about removing the cause of the pain because it has been accepted as fact that the cause is unknown. At present there are many books on the topic of pain in general, as well as numerous books on specific conditions, but not a single one of them reveals the underlying cause of the pain and how to remove it, eliminating the need for drugs. Until now. Harvey Diamond is the bestselling author of the enormously successful series of FIT FOR LIFE books. Harvey has one of the most compelling and moving human interest stories you will ever hear. While serving his country in Vietnam, as a 21 year old in 1966, he was exposed to Agent Orange which brought on a condition called peripheral neuropathy. Along with extreme, unrelenting pain, this condition also slowly deteriorates muscles until individuals are confined to a wheelchair unable to move. Most cases are fatal. In his landmark new book, LIVING WITHOUT PAIN, Harvey reveals to those 200 million people who are in pain and looking for answers, how they too can live life free of pain without having to rely on dangerous drugs. Harvey's engaging and light-hearted, reader-friendly writing style highlights this book which is brimming over with common sense information that changes people's lives. ... Read more

Product Description
Help young CFS sufferers cope with this debilitating illness

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating illness that can have devastating effects for those afflicted, especially children and adolescents. Pediatric Chronic Fatigue Syndrome discusses this growing problem and its many facets in depth, including the mounting prevalence of incidents in the population and detailed explanations of diagnostic criteria. Case studies are provided to illustrate the issues those afflicted with CFS face, such as increasing isolation, decreasing school attendance, the length of time it typically takes to get diagnosed, and the impact on leisure activities.

Current criteria for CFS were designed for use in adults, with few studies done on assessing how appropriate these criteria are for children and adolescents. Pediatric Chronic Fatigue Syndrome provides the criteria for first-time diagnosis of pediatric CFS and includes practical recommendations developed by the International Association of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Pediatric Case Definition Working Group. This book closely examines the potential impact that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has on child and adolescent functioning, psychological factors, social factors, and the suffering endured from symptoms. Guidelines are provided on ways ME-CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) can be addressed in primary practice.

Topics in Pediatric Chronic Fatigue Syndrome include:

ME/CFS
CACFS (Chronic Fatigues Syndrome in Children and Adolescents)
the common problem of Munchausen-by-proxy
research on the psychosocial, family, and physical functioning comparing children and adolescents with CFS and those without CFS
using theory in clinical practice
guidelines on how ME/CFS can be addressed in primary practice
overview of CFS aspects for healthcare professionals who may be called on to diagnose or treat the illness
and much more!

Pediatric Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is timely, important information for health professionals, researchers, counselors, caregivers, parents of children and adolescents with CFS, and patients with CFS. ... Read more

Product Description
This non technical account is based on the author's experience of recovering from ME.It mixes tips on physical factors such as sleep quality and diet with a Bible based approach to dealing with spiritual root issues which led the author quickly to healing.

Paul Flynn is an author of short stories, articles and language teaching texts for students of English in China. In 2001 he moved to China from London with his wife Choi. They currently live in Hong Kong.

Author Review:

I would love to be able to point to a moment when I received divine healing and that was the end of it.To my embarrassment, it never happened.I had to deal slowly with physical factors, finding the kind of short and sharp exercise that deepens sleep, gradually increasing the angle of tilt at which I needed to rest, discovering that all supplements are worse than useless in the acute and chronic stages (because they ‘boost the immune system’ when the illness is caused by an already highly active immune system).
Dealing with spiritual roots went on at the same time. The physical and the spiritual went hand in hand.I healed while sorting out both, but I could see no connection between the two.
The roots of sickness amount to failure to hear the word of God and keep it.At the heart of modern western culture there is an error, the belief that all religion is good, that there are so many different ways to the same destination. The Bible warns against this idea on just about every page, telling us that there is only one Healer and that all blessing comes from worshiping him alone and leaving the others to one side.Once I woke up to this truth I began to heal, and to heal quickly. It astonished me that a simple switch in thinking could have this effect, but that is how it happened.I didn’t need to ‘try hard.’I only needed to have faith in the only Healer and to steer clear of the others.
Some people object to the ‘spiritual roots’ approach to healing because they feel it implies that the person is to blame for being sick.It doesn’t.Jesus explicitly rejected that idea that sick people are more guilty than others.Don’t let this issue prevent you from identifying your own spiritual roots, because it is the key to real and lasting healing. If you can get the roots out, your healing is secure. If the roots are still in, then even though you cut the tree down until it is invisible the sickness can make a comeback.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
I bought the book because I was dealing with a health problem.I did not know what to expect but was certainly pleasantly surprised.Just reading about how the authors struggled with a major illness and were able to overcome it was an inspiration.Half way through the book I stopped and ordered three additional books and had them sent to friends and relatives who are dealing with health problems. I can not imagine anyone who is facing health problems not being inspired by this book.If they are not inspired or encouraged, perhaps they are not discouraged
enough to have an open mind.I truly believe that we do not have to know how something works in order to benefit from trying it.I believe that this books offers HOPE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a self-help book, but the appendices are good
Others have pointed out the shortcomings of this book... the long narrative, the lack of solid how-to advice, the hodge-podge of techniques mentioned but not thoroughly explained. Yet there are some good things if you read it with a grain of salt and don't get bogged down.

The authors point out the importance of attitude but it's their examples of misguided attitudes in the first part of the book that make their point. They knew they were very sensitive to chemicals and mold and yet stayed in toxic environments and then were really really upset when they had severe reactions. This is understandable at first but when they keep doing this the reader gets a bit impatient. Then they seek out supernatural advice through mediums and such and also try bodywork and kineseology and they eventually improve. Yet it's not clear exactly what cured them, or even how much better they are. So the book is a little frustrating.

There is a series of appendices which I actually found useful. If you are looking for help with MCS/EI, read Pam Gibson's reports on what helps and does not help, but consider getting a copy of this book at the library, or buy a used copy. Skim through the text, keeping an open mind about the channeled guidance - it may or may not have happened exactly the way they understood it, but they were there and advice was coming from somewhere, so I can accept that something was happening and eventually it was helpful. Anyway, the appendices are worth looking over.

1-0 out of 5 stars Puuuhleeeeze!! Don't Waste Your TIME!
They don't even have a clue! This is a very old - outdated book. It needs to be out of print!

4-0 out of 5 stars Opened My Mind
This book helped me to look at my illness in a new way.Although parts of the authors' story were a bit longwinded, I found it helpful to read about their process in detail.I could feel (and relate to) how consumed they were by trying to create a "safe" environment in the external world- and how this obsession did little to improve their health.I felt encouraged as they discovered new ways of relating to EI and how they were transformed by their intense inner work.

I had never heard of "channeling" and I wasn't really into energy healing when I first read this book. I benefitted from its basic message nonetheless.I still refer back to it, especially Appendix IV which is a summary of the authors' observations on healing CFS/EI.As the authors note, not everyone has to do what they did to heal the illness, but if you have tried "everything" are stuck, this book could be helpful to you.

If this book is too "woo-woo" for your taste (and even if it isn't), I recommend "Healing Environmental Illness from Within" by Marcia Murphy. It is the story of woman who wholeheartedly tried the more conventional treatments for EI, but failed to break through it until she included mind & spirit in her healing process.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but interesting
As a longtime CFS and EI sufferer, I couldn't wait to get this book. I'm now very open to "channels" and messages from angels or highly evolved beings, and also the incredible helpfulness of energy medicine in the very necessary changing of beliefs, letting go of emotions, as well as the physical avoidance of toxins (at least in the healing stages) and attention to diet, allergies, etc. Although I'm almost 100% healed and even starting a new business at age 52, I was enticed by reviews that this book would uncover the mental and emotional reasons people get EI and CFS at this time and place.

I eagerly went to bed each night to read another few chapters, but as each night went on, I was anxious for the story part to be over (it was interesting and validating, even though each EI sufferer is affected quite differently) and the "answer" part to begin. I was disappointed to say the least. Any evolved being who would admonish a human and cause them to suffer and cry with guilt, rage, shame, etc. is NOT a very evolved being!

This being talked in circles that were very hard to follow, and the authors blamed themselves for not getting it! Any entity from the Light is going to feel like a loving parent and bathe them in higher vibrations that feel good, not bad, while releasing the negative energy so many of us have. We need positive loving messages, not more depression! The insights I receive from Highly evolved souls and entities are always helpful and make me feel better; that's how I differentiate them from messages from the "dark side" whether that's a religious belief or your own shadow side.

I don't know what treatments the authors use for people who visit them (another disappointment with the book), but they hinted at NAET, which does have value. Allergies (or more accurately, energy toxins) to everything from foods, inhalants, everyday products, almost ANYTHING) can have a huge impact on the immune system, and in my case, my moods and muscles. NAET neutralizes these substances to much relief, but I found early on that I was so sick, I couldn't hold the treatments, even though I did them for 2 years.

It wasn't until I met the folks at Quantum Techniques (www.quantumtechniques.com) that I was able to release the viruses, bacteria, past emotional traumas, beliefs- all kinds of things that didn't seem at the time to be connected to EI, TOTALLY PAINLESSLY. It's been an amazing journey, though not cheap. I also recommend Machaelle Small Wright's MAP book- Medical Assistance Program from beings of the Light who are there to help humans heal. And it's free, and it feels good! ... Read more

Product Description
Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Repetitive Strain Injury provides a summary of information from a conference on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia syndrome (FS), and related disorders. Many of the contributors are known for being actively involved in the study of the target disorders and represent countries around the world. In addition to health professionals, the contributors represent the legal profession and the insurance industry of Canada.

The unique feature of this volume is its emphasis on disability and compensation. In Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Repetitive Strain Injury readers will find concise summaries of the formal presentations given at the Vancouver Conference in July 1994. The underlying tenor in the chapters is on viewing affective (psychological) pathology as a contributor to the underlying processes of these disorders. Readers are encouraged to follow closely the logic of each author’s academic exercise. They will find that in many cases, the authors provoke more answers than they are able to answer, in the hope of promoting continued research toward finding concrete answers.

The conference was designed to address etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, treatment, disability, medico-legal issues and cost containment. The program agenda was issue driven rather than condition based. The papers were presented in a manner which allowed delegates and speakers to see the overlap and differences between these conditions.

The purpose of Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Repetitive Strain Injury is to provide education for primary care physicians, specialist physicians, other health care disciplines, patients, and the public. A second purpose is to enable investigators in the three topic areas to get new information from specialists around the world to develop new ideas, which will inform future research and consensus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the Yeast Connection
Amazing read with all my questions answered. The self test was an eye opener and the suggested treatment via medicine and elimination diet was right on.

Anyone suffering from chronic yeast problems and/or chronic fatigue must read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good Doctor
I went to college in western Tennessee where I experienced allergies for the first time. I saw a Dr. Crook who was supposed to be the best doctor
around at the time (1975-1977). I had no idea until years later that this
was the doctor I saw! He was very thorough, kind, and approachable to a college student in distress. His books have helped a lot of people. I thought he was ancient back then...he was probably younger than I am now!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book That Started it All
Dr. Crook was one of the first to write about CFS,this book does have cartoons which make it easier to understand. This book changed/saved my life. My daughter & I were diagnosed in 1983(a rarity in itself back then)and told "good news is, yes there is something wrong with you. Bad news is there really isn't a standard drug or treatment. Except expensive immunoglobin therapy that your insurance won't cover since they don't really recognize CFS as an illness!" I didn't get the book until 1990 and read it from cover to cover the first night. Remember no real internet then and GNC carried vitamins and body building supplements, no St.Johns Wort, forget Acidopholous and CoQ10 sounded like a Star Wars character.THANKS TO DR. CROOK these things plus many others in the book made a complete difference in my health. Yes the other books listed are more informative, they were published later. If you can still find this one read it first. P.S. I was searching AMAZON because my 2nd copy is now so tattered and covered with notes from people I've loaned it to that it resembles a high school yearbook complete with heartfelt comments:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information
This book had extremely helpful information for those suffering from symptoms that relate to Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The author gives practical advice and explains the cause of often misunderstood symptoms such as itching, headaches, nausea, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, etc.If you are suffering from CFS, Fibromyalgia, or allergy symptoms, I highly recommend this book. This book was far easier to read and understand than many books on the topic. It also address overconsumption of sugar as a problem, which many authors are reluctant to address.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I've read other Yeast Connection books and they were much better than this one. The book has an over abundance of cartoons used for illustration and instruction, so much so that they are extremely distracting and make it very difficult to read. All of the information covered in this book can be read in the Yeast Connection Handbook and others. It basically repeats other books and adds too many cartoons to fill in the pages. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Empire Strikes Back...
I picked up this book in the hope that it would present relevant theories regarding the evaluation of CFS as well as some useful treatments. But when I came to the section in which typhoid was redefined as an "anxiety disorder" ("Historical Overview" by Mark Demitrack and Susan Abbey) my mind came to a screeching halt. How was it possible that two MDs could ignore the reality of rampant infectious diseases during the Civil War in favor of a wildly inappropriate psychological "diagnosis"? The answer is that they, along with the majority of the doctors who contributed to this volume, are psychiatrists, a profession which has traditionally attributed psychogenic causes to physical ailments.

Psychiatrists have long maintained the position that physical symptoms can be generated by the mind. (The mind does not, in fact, control physiological responses. The brain does. Try to lower your body temperature with your mind.) Freud, himself, mistakenly diagnosed patients with MS, sarcoma and hemophilia as "hysterics," a "diagnosis" which nearly resulted in the death of at least one of them (Emma Eckstein). Despite the existence of germ theory this trend continued unabated for a century. However, due to the increasing sophistication of medical tests, most psychological "explanations" for neurological disorders have fallen by the wayside. I can only imagine the glee with which the psychiatric community laid hold of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, an illness for which no etiology had been discovered. CFS was their baby!

This book represents nothing more than a compilation of unsupported conjectures regarding CFS.These can be summarized as follows: CFS is largely caused by depression, "stress," and "psychological predisposition." The symptoms are psychosomatic, brought on by "illness beliefs," and lack of exercise. The treatments predictably revolve around "educating the patient with restructuring of beliefs and perspectives of the illness" and "graded exercise." Antidepressants, that staple of psychiatry, are also recommended. Not recommended are any treatments which might address the causes or physical symptoms of the illness (itemized by Anthony Komaroff on p. 169 in the book's single praiseworthy moment), since these have been rejected by the psychiatric community (which apparently believes that swollen glands, fevers, and night sweats can be produced by "beliefs").

I wish I could say that since the publication of this book, the larger medical community has changed its deplorable attitude towards people with the neuroimmunological disorder known as CFS/ME.Sadly, it has not. There is too much money at stake to release the stranglehold maintained by psychiatrists and financed by insurance companies. (Peter Manu, one of the most vocal of the "all in your head" theorists, is employed by Metlife.) Unfortunately, as long as psychiatry is considered to be a legitimate branch of medicine, the antiquated, and, in this case, profoundly damaging notions of psychiatrists will continue to be taken seriously.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Laugh
Stephen Strauss, Peter Manu, Susan Abbey, Simon Wesseley; it's a veritable who's who of sadistic charlatans long ago disgraced and throughly repudiated by the top authorities on ME. Recommended for fans of fiction and nonsense.

Internist Paul Cheney, MD, PhD, the world's foremost clinican and top researcher on ME said of Straus' findings in his most (self-)publicized study, "it's an absolute lie." Internist Dan Peterson, also one of the world's foremost clinicians and researchers on ME said "Stephen Straus is a snake."Straus was still doing grand rounds in the mid- late 90's saying possible retroviral association with ME made no sense because retroviruses cause neurological, cognitive, immunological and endocrine pathology, which aren't prominent features of ME.These are in fact the central, disabling features of the disease. And of course quite a few bench scientists have found retroviral involvement since 1986, most recently Dan Peterson finding 95-98% of studied ME patients with antibodies to XMRV.

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge conflict of interest: edited and written by researchers, executives, and psychiatrist consultants funded by Eli Lilly
There is nothing here for patients, scientists or doctors requiring factually accurate biomedical information regarding the organically classified brain disorder ICD-10 G93.3 Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

To understand why the information in this book does not apply to patients with the organic brain disorder Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), readers need to understand a basic principle of scientific medical research.

Organically classified diseases already HAVE medical explanations for symptoms whether or not the exact cause is known.

Patients with organic diseases, by definition alone, do not meet the criteria for psychiatric somatization (psychosomatic) disorders.

And according to the principles of scientific research information based on factually incorrect assumptions and study group selection criteria cannot be extrapolated to organically ill patients.

Nor, for that matter, do beliefs, personalities or behavior cause or perpetuate organic damage caused by active or cyclically reactivated neurotropic (brain/heart) viruses such as HHV-6 and EBV (check PubMed for biomedical studies).

Verification is beyond simple: Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME)/post viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS)/chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are exclusively listed under G93.3 on page 494 - photocopies are available to the public.

Many doctors and patients are unaware of the ongoing ideological battle currently raging between psychiatrists over who is actually mentally ill and where mental illness ends and organic disease begins.

Or that adherents of psychiatrist George Engel's "Biopsychosocial" theory are reclassifying many organic diseases, not just G93.3 ME/PVFS/CFS or M79 fibromyalgia, as psychosomatic disorders in an effort to validate their theory.

Looking for a list of these organic disorders? Check the list of patient medical disorders covered under the lawsuits filed and won by states attorneys nationwide against UnumProvident Disability Insurance conglomerate or read biopsychosocial psychosomatic research by AJ Barsky.

Readers interested in accurate, applicable psychological information on CFS and fibromyalgia need to read books by longtime CDC and NIH researchers Dr. Leonard Jason and Renee Taylor also on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting Insights
As of this date there are close to 150 titles listed on amazonrelating to Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome. Only a very small number of these deal with the full personal experience of living with the illness. Unlike the other few memoir type writings I've read, Skloot's is not a "how I beat the illness" story, because he hasn't beat it, he's simply drastically altered his life by necessity.

For someone like me, whose same illness was denied by everyone around me for years, to the point where I internalized their beliefs and tried to live as if I weren't ill until I, too, became majorly debilitated, Skloot's perspective is a welcome relief. He had a sudden onset, which changed his life dramatically within a matter of weeks. It's encouraging to read the musings of someone who has his head straight on about this illness. He doesn't whine, or moan and groan. He is so completely sure of his ground, that there's no room for defensiveness in his tone. It's uplifting to read about someone who, like myself, was open to every alternative treatment or scientific explanation, though the miracle cure that would relieve his symptoms hasn't come along yet. It's also reassuring to know that there's someone out there who had the combination of luck and smarts not to be completely downtrodden by this disease. As a fellow sufferer, his lack of anger, his philosophical approach, his open mindedness are qualities I'd like to emulate.

If you are a sufferer, or know anyone who is, or has a CFIDS sufferer in their life, this is a good book to start the healing process. The last thing anyone who's sick needs to be told is that all their problems will go away if they just give up wheat or mushrooms. Right now, CFIDS is a mystery, and coping strategies that go beyond the facile recommendations of most self-help for CFIDS books out there, like "don't get upset if you miss a deadline at work" -- are rare. If you become ill to the extent that Skloot is, you need the spiritual and philosophical nutrition of excellent literature. I only wish there were more such fine personal accounts written on this devastating illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars engagingly personal and wide in scope
I am wary of books by men-who-have-been-athletes, because I find my experience of similar life events often to be different, to the point of having nothing in common. Floyd Skloot has written a book that is at once both very personal and wide-ranging.Speaking of the stunning changes thatcome with a life altering illness, he proceeds to delve into areas asdiverse as baseball (player become spectator), alternative healingtechniques (he's tried a bunch), spirituality, and the changed perceptionof time that comes with chronic disease.

Having moved, like Floyd, fromthe fast lane to the slow lane, to the exit ramp and off, I find hisperspective to be honest, profound, and free of a sense of victimization. Ihighly recommend the book to women and men with CFS and other chronicmaladies.Far from being the last word, it opens up the discussion of alifestyle and worldview that is almost taboo in faster-is-better Americanculture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful without apology
Being a CFS sufferer, I myself had become very tired of the autobiographical books which bemoaned how hard the illness is. Mr Skloot never minimizes the illness or his discomfort yet shows how the introspection forced upon oneby long term illness as well as the search for relief can offer insight, humor and relevation.I don't know of any disabled person, caregiver or human being who couldn't experience some moments of connection and understanding in Mr. Skloot's book. His style is refreshing and honest. A truly fresh look at the human condition and it's ups & downs.A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Essays on Living with Any Chronic Illness
One of things that impressed me about this book was what it was NOT.It wasn't an attempt to gain sympathy; it wasn't about finding a last minute miracle cure; it wasn't about easy cliches about health and illness. The essays contained humor, insight, and concentration on the fact of living. The best essay I thought was Home Remedies.Usually, when I read something really good, I get an image that sums it up for me. For me, I imagine the author stooping down and grabing a clump of rich and warm earth, and telling me "this is good"--and I understand what he means.--Vidas Gvozdzius ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book To Help You Figure Out Why You Are So Tired
I have read many books on health, and have never read one so well put together. Dr. Murphree realizes that one treatment is not the answer for everyone. He explains how to get off the tired treadmill one step at a time, and how to add to add additional steps to tailor treatment to your special situation. I was happy to be able to purchase the exact vitamins and formulas that Dr. Murphree suggested in the book from his office. Everyone was so kind and helpful, and I didn't have to scramble around trying to find them from a questionable source. As a extremely sensitive person, I have had only wonderful results from this program. I would suggest reading this book to anyone who has not been able to get their life back on track.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good and Not so Good...
I enjoyed this book. The author seems extremely knowledgeable on FMS and I learned a lot about it... however - as the book progressed it became more of a sales pitch for his vitamin plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compassionate and Straightforward
This book is very easy to read for those who are in much pain or exhausted as it is often the case with CFS\CFIDS\FM.
It is not at all complex and offers a reasonable theory behind the causes of CFS\CFIDS\FM, and explains (with many scientific references) why conventional anti-depression and other drugs can do much more harm.
It is very helpful as it include Q&A-style text boxes with exactly the questions you'd want to ask. It promotes certain supplements which I found to be very helpful. Be sure to include Rhodiola, Licorice Root, Garlic and Oregano Oil as well. Construct your diet around Low-GL as well as anti-inflammatory food choices. Research is rewarding in the end.
