5-0 out of 5 stars a great book for the average person to understand
I have CF and was looking for a book that was simple to understand and simple to follow. This book is it. The information is laid out very clearly and I found it very helpful without being overloaded with information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Empowering book
I was diagnosed with CFS more than 10 years ago, and this was one of the books I got at that time.I just finished re-reading it, and remembered why I liked it so much.It emphasizes that there are many things *we* can do to help ourselves rather than waiting for the doctor to dole out little pills. The other two books I'd gotten were much more focused on a victim-mentality.

One of the reviewer mentions Murray's recommendation for exercise.Yes, hard exercise or physical strain knocks me flat on my back for a few days. But, gradual amounts of light exercise do make me feel better, and I've been able to do more over the years.Murray perhaps doesn't emphasize the gradual part of the exercise program.I wish he'd been clearer about what kind of exercises are useful, and how to gage how much is too much.He doesn't mention anything about yoga, either. He *does* mention in other portions of the text that physical exertion does lead to excessive exhaustion.

One problem with the book is the overview nature. It does cover a lot of different things, but doesn't really delve deeply into any one.It does have some recommendations for herbal support, and gives a good sample diet. But, as it does cover a breadth of things, it does suggest further avenues to explore.

I don't feel this book is the end-all and be-all of CFS self-treatment books, but it is a positive book, and well worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT but this book
This is the worst book about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that I have ever read! His suggestions to exercise show clearly that he NO understanding of CFS/CFIDS! Yes, exercise will help many people with fatigue, even chronic fatigue; but not Chronic Fatigue SYNDROME. For someone with true CFS (also known as CFDIS) exercise will make things worse, sometimes far worse!
He also talks about all kinds of other things (such as hypothiroidism) that can cause fatigue but have nothing to do with CFS. (other than the fact that if you have CFS these things have already been ruled out by your doctor and are not the cause). So long discussions of those causes of fatigue are useless if you've already been diagnosed!
There are a lot of other holes in this book. It was a total waste of money, and I'll be throwing it out!
There are many GOOD CFS/CFIDS books, buy one of those!
(such as "Running on Empty" by Katrina Berne,PH.D , "The Doctors Guide to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" by David S. Bell,M.D. or "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, A Treatment Guide" by Erica F. Verrillo and Lauren M. Gellam these 3 books are very helpful and have accurate information.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help
Most doctors give us medication that doesn't help. This book offers real ways we can help ourselves!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Me A Favor...
Before you read any farther, scroll up and look to the left column.
Click on the link that says "table of contents", read it,
and then come back here.Done?Good.That in itself should be
enough to get you to buy this book. All of Dr. Murray's books are as
thoroughly organized. You have explanations, common symptoms, and then
a whole array of dietary options and explanations of how any number of
nutritional supplements can help your condition....Michael Murray is a
standard in the alternative medicine field because of the research he
does and cites and because the supplements he recommends have found a
valid place in today's society.

In a conversation with Anthony'shomebound teacher, we discussed the nuances of maneuvering a sailboat.¿ She explained how she didn't understand thetechnological workings of the boat, but she could just "feel" what she neededto do in order to control the boat.¿ My mind made an immediateconnection to educating a child with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.¿ As with a sailboat, many books and articlescan be read.¿ You can understand thetechnical terms without knowing how you'll respond should a crisis arise.¿ You can't see the wind, you have to feel itand respond to what you feel.¿ Once acrisis does arise, will you freeze up or will you automatically respond.¿ If you respond to your instinct and feelings, more than likely, you will avoid capsizing and ride the waves created by thewind and currents.¿ You keep your eye onthe horizon, waiting for the wind to bring you safely back to land.My son and I have traveled onthis journey with his Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in this same way.¿ We have kept our God-given instinct as ourguide.¿ We sometimes take "water in theboat", but we continue to bail (sometimes frantically) the water back into thesea from which it came.¿ We have hope aswe watch the horizon.¿ We have dreams ofsetting our feet on firm land.¿ No matterwhat, we are committed to traveling this journey together.¿ We are determined to complete our course. In Harnessing the Wind, weshare the physical battles Anthony faced.¿We share the struggles we faced with physicians, family, educators, friends and insurance companies.¿ Weshare these things so others realize that they're not being singled out.¿ We share these things hoping to spare othersthe "stormy seas" we had to struggle through.¿We want to encourage you to continue.¿We also want professionals, friends and family to understand that youcan either become waves to block our passage or harbors for us to replenish ourstrength.¿ The final part of the bookaddresses specific educational needs of these children and ways we have learnedt ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sailing Along with Shanon
I have read only excerpts from Shanon McQuown's book, Harnessing the Wind, but what I have read thus far has been compelling. The author takes the reader on her journey through the discovery, diagnosis and treatment of her son's illness, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.Sail along with her as she navigates through the educational and medical storms that she and her son, Anthony must weather. In the end, the writer becomes, not only her son's caregiver and advocate, but transforms herself into an academic reformer so that all children with this often disabling disease have the oppurtunities in school that all are entitled to.Eileen Holderman

5-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing the Wind
This is a very informing book.It really explains what
the problem is and how it can be mistaken by laziness. The child
does have a problem with energy and is not just lazy.
Shanon really explains how the doctors were mistaking the way her child was and just said he was lazy.
I recommend this book to any one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart warming
Very detailed and thorough. Whether you have CFS, know someone with CFS or are simply curious about the illness, you will be blown away by the personal accounts and the straight forward facts this book presents. The book sucks you in making it hard to put down. I highly recommend it. Be prepared to laugh and cry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journal of a Mother's Battle ---
Many patients and their families struggle daily to come to terms with a name for their illness that sounds benign and harmless (chronic fatigue syndrome), as well as traditional views that see illnesses that predominantly strike women should be treated as emotional, brain, or horomonal issues.

Shanon McQuown's writes about the price of this lack of acceptance in her book, "Harnessing The Wind -- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and My Son". The book, written in journal format, details a mother's struggle for her son's survival, month by month. As the chapters unfold, the effects of a society that has yet to see her son's illness as disabling become more and more apparent. The book message is clear: CFS sufferers and their families face so much more than just a physical illness, they face a societal attitudes and misinformation. The book is littered with government officials, clinicians, and local officials who seem unaware or unconcerned about CFS, on any level.

The name "chronic fatigue syndrome", given to the Anthony's illness by government officials years ago, sounds trivial and has undoubtedly led many to dismiss the illness which Ms. McQuown's son, Anthony suffers from. In McQuown's book, we see the damagethis dismissal can do -- to her son, to her family, and to society.

But in recent years, research has proved this is a systemic and devasting ilness. People who suffer from CFS, such as "Seabiscuit" author Laura Hillenbrand, have spoken out on the price it has exacted on them. This book is a book about overcoming one of the most disabling and devasting illnesses known, it is a book about one family's struggle to deal with a society that is largely uneducated about a devasting illness whose time will someday come.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO let bad reviews put you off, you should be!
CFS is always a misdiagnosis. What patients told they have 'CFS' need is a real diagnosis, not advice from 'CFS' experts.

Illnesses most often misdiagnosed as 'CFS' include Lyme disease, vitamin deficiencies, cancer, MS, Bechet's disease, thyroid and adrenal illnesses, FM and so on.

Many of the illnesses misdiagnosed as 'CFS' are testable and treatable...but only once patients and their doctors ditch the useless 'CFS' misdiagnosis. Many illneses can also be very serious or fatal if not correctly diagnosed and treated, and this includes Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. (M.E. is NOT the same thing as 'CFS'! M.E. is also not invisible or untestable as 'CFS' is.)

The last thing patients need are books telling them 'CFS' can be easily cured or treated and treating them as if they each had the same disease.

People with vitamin deficiencies need that vitamin. People with Lyme disease need certain antibiotics. A correct diagnosis is everything and 'CFS' books like this do not help, no matter how kind they seem on the surface of things. Patients need real information relevant to their actual disease.

Please, if you have a 'CFS' (mis)diagnosis, do everything you can to find your correct diagnosis, do not accept 'CFS' ever as an end point to the process of diagnosis. And avoid books like this one like the plague!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let That One Bad Review Scare You
This is a good book with some great information in it.If you want solid medical advice, this is where you turn. Some of it's a little basic, but I think it would be really useful to someone who's just been diagnosed. By the way, Anesthesiologists treat all kinds of pain (a hallmark of CFS) and are certainly experienced in drugs.Yes, drugs have side effects. But, they have been proven to work and are acceptable medical practice.

The book is well written, funny, and immensely helpful.I suffer from both fibromyalgia AND chronic fatigue syndrome, so I know what I am talking about. Please, everyone, give the book a chance and don't let the ravings of one anti-medicine fringe-type scare you away.

2-0 out of 5 stars basic CFS info 101
The book is large but the information is the same you get in any book on Chronic Fatique Syndrome but too much filler to create a regular size book from the Dummies series. Most of the smaller books I ordered I found to be much more helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended; enlightening, educational and accessable.
Highly recommended as a primer on this difficult subject!Chronic Fatigue Symdrome for Dummies is an easy read that sheds much light on this syndrome. My sister has suffered from CFS for years, and this is the first book I've read that explained what she's going through in a comprehensive and understandable manner. I sent a copy to my mom, who was finally able to "get it".Kudo's to the author for providing a step by step guide to understanding the dynamics to this much misunderstood and malaigned disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my new cfs bible!
I've had cfids for 3 years. I have read many books and wasted many hours on the net for information. This book is the best I've encountered yet. It has so much information and is all right on the money. She is very practical and down to earth as well as diving into the scientific stuff. Since CFS is so complex she covers all kinds of aspects and suggests things to help cope. As far as excercise, yes it can make you feel worse if you overdo it, of course you aren't going to do what normal people do or do it on a 'bad' day but on decent days most can do stretching and walking. It doesn't help to just let yourself go. I'm surprised at the other review here that gave one star. I say check it out for yourself so you don't miss out on this awsome book as a result of one bad review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A God-Send for those who SUFFER from CFIDS
Beautifully written, well organized, poignant account of the absolute pain and destruction a still misunderstood disease can cause. Although this book was disturbing in that the author is on the extreme end of CFIDS, in termsof the severity of his illness, his story is the story of EVERYONE whosuffers from this insidious disease. One can not help but find comfort inthe simple fact that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Buy this book if you have beendiagnosed with CFIDS or if you are close to someone who has- you won'tregret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Encouraging and Enlightening Story
In this age of MTV flashframes and six o'clock soundbites it becomes easyfor people to make their evaluations and descions on any topic in aninstant. This book gives this hard to define topic the attention itdeserves.Rather than just telling you textbook definitions, it SHOWS youexactly what chronic fatigue is, and how it crushed the life of a veryactive television producer.Encouraging, though honest and frustrating, itenlightens those without the disease, and gives those who suffer from it acommonality to draw strength from. There's also an afterward by his wife,on how it has affected her, a message to those (like me) who have to watchsomeone they love gradually falling victim. ... Product Description
In his trademark, revolutionary style, Dr. Goldstein uses his model of neural dysregulation to incorporate basic neuroscience research into pathophysiology and treatment. Betrayal by the Brain presents a comprehensive thesis that clearly defines the biological basis for many of the varied symptoms experienced by chronic fatigue syndrome patients. Dr. Goldstein provides a rationale for the use of symptomatic therapies that have worked in many CFS patients.

Betrayal by the Brain is a valuable handbook to assist the medical professional in the diagnosis and treatment of the many patients afflicted with this illness. It is of great value to medical professionals as well as academic researchers in psychiatry, biobehavioral sciences, psychoneuroimmunology, and pain management.

Dr. Goldstein has added layers of regulation to the limbic system that help further explain limbic dysfunction in neurosomatic disorders, and he suggests novel methods of remediation. Betrayal by the Brain represents integrative thinking and the latest research and discoveries by Dr. Goldstein on neurosomatic disorders--the most common group of illnesses for which patients consult physicians. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
The guy that gave this book a one star rating is moron.

I have had MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) since 1978.MCS overlaps with CFS and FM.I have tried just about everything anyone has suggested over the last 30 years.Absolutely NOTHING helped at all.Not even a little bit.

Then I discovered Goldstein's work and found a doctor that followed his methods (Dr. Seastrunk). He put me on high doses of Neurontin along with Effexor. For the first time in my life IT WORKED.I couldn't believe it.The downside is the side effects of those drugs. But they pulled me out of a downward spiral, and I'm stable again.

Goldstein is brilliant.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Goldstein's approach cured me of CFS
I was housebound and often bedridden for 15 years with severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.I tried many treatment approaches but nothing had any beneficial effect.I began working with Dr. Goldstein in 2001, following the experimental drug protocol set forth in this book. I was on the meds he prescribed for 3 years.During that time, I gradually recovered.I am now off the meds, working fulltime, and living a normal life. I know this approach does not work for everyone, but it has worked for many people with CFS, and I would recommend giving it serious consideration.Dr. Goldstein's hypothesis is that CFS is the result of a malfunction of the nervous system in which the neurons are over-responsive to stimuli.Sounds, smells, bright lights, stress, etc. all over-stimulate the over-reactive nervous system, causing fatigue and adrenal exhaustion. This is certainly consistent with my own experience of the illness. The meds reduce synaptic transmission.Over time, they can restore the nervous system to normal functioning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Try, But There Is a Better Theory
I have read different parts of the book.Certainly there is a neurological problem in CFS.But, there is another theory out.A Dr. Poesnecker who wrote Chronic Fatigue Unmasked 2000 is treating and healing patients of CFS or CFIDS left and right. His theory:The adrenals are the origin of the problem. He uses adrenal extract not cortisone to heal his patients in a very slow but sure manner.I am one of his patients.I have CFS.I also have adrenal insufficiency.A medical test proved it.I am in the process of being treated with adrenal extract. My insomnia is now gone and also my racing thoughts at night.I am now looking forward to a complete recovery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Goldstein is wrong.
He is out to make money on the sick, IMHO.

His theory is all hot air. I do not know of one person helped by him.

Sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars a complete review of the etiology, diagnosis,of CFS and FMS.
I have read Dr. Goldstein's book twice, six months apart, and if I read it again, will probably glean even more from it.THis book is excellent, well- written, but not especially for the lay person. For the lay person, theCompanion Volume written by a patient is more appropriate. ... Read more

Product Description
Learn how a patient’s behavior can factor into the prognosis of medically unexplainable illness!

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes examines the link between mental illness and physical syndromes that lack organic disease explanations, including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, premenstrual dysphoria, irritable bowel, and Gulf War illness.

The author has evaluated the best research work of the past 20 years to determine the association between psychopathology and functional illness, the biological gradient between somatic and psychological symptoms, and the manifestations of dysfunctional coping.

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes challenges recent conceptualizations of functional somatic syndromes as brain disorders connected to affective spectrum disorder, serotonin deficiency, cerebral hypoperfusion or abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function and highlights the importance of abnormal illness behavior, sexual victimization, and maladaptive coping for the production and maintenance of these disorders.

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes explores observations on the neurobiology and the personality abnormalities of patients made from structured data collected over a period of several years. It describes modern perceptions of functional somatic syndromes and how they have evolved into a tightly knit family of self-standing syndromes with a common core. The book examines the correlation between the burden of psychopathology and the physical features of these illnesses; reviews advances made in the appraisal of the neuroanatomy, neuropsychology, and neurochemistry of functional syndromes; and focuses on the connection between measurable dimensions of personality, coping, and illness behavior and the prognosis of medically unexplainable illnesses.

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes examines:

psychiatric morbidity brain perfusion

post-traumatic stress in Gulf War illness the spectrum of mood disorders the hypothalamatic-pituitary-adrenal axis the sexual victimization of patients and much more!

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes is an essential resource for psychiatrists and psychologists working in outpatient practice. ... Read more

But not as good as his other book: The Earth is Flat: Recent Scientific Advances Disproving the Hysterical Round World Theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book provides and excellent explanation of illnesses that are difficult to define as well as classify. A must read for anyone interested in psychosomatics

1-0 out of 5 stars Dusty history. Achooo.
Dusty history. Achooo.

Nothing new here, just the recitation of the centuries-old mantra that any illness that medical doctors don't know everything about is automatically a psychiatric disorder.

Older theories of "bad" air and "evil spirits" as causative agents of disease have given way to more modern theories of "mass hysteria" spread by the media and Internet.

Parkinson's, diabetes, MS, ulcers and polio have all been declared mental disorders at some point. Children with polio were once beaten for their "behavioral" refusal to move.

As a woman, I found reading Dr. Manu's book akin to reading a first-hand account of childbirth written by a man who has never given birth in his life. Observations: yes. Speculative conclusions: oh yes. Irrelevant "facts": yes.

As a fairytale icon to "can you believe they used to think that," Manu's book is a gem worthy of a smile or two.

Readers expecting current biological research will be disappointed.

Like many people who do not wish to have their theories disproven, Dr. Manu completely ignores the decades-old World Health Organization listing of chronic fatigue syndrome under neurological disorders (ICD 10 G93.3) and fibromyalgia under rheumatological soft tissue disorders - M79.0. Good grief, even health insurance giant Blue Cross/Blue Shield lists them as organic disorders.

As has been the case throughout medical history, the advancement of imperfect knowledge lies in exacting scientific study not the repetition of myth. Doctors don't know what causes cancer, multiple sclerosis, or migraines, but the lack of knowledge doesn't mean "imaginary." The rationale that nothing further can be learned about organic illness is laughable in the current age of scientific advancements. Medical doctors can and should do better than trying to talk patients out of organic illness.

Product Description
One & the Same; Connecting Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Candidiasis & Immune System Dysfunction is a personal account of a 12-year "Fibromyalgia" sufferer. Something amazing happened to Teresa Eakman in the depths of her illness. After years of excruciating pain, unending fatigue and depression, a pregnancy beginning with twelve weeks of severe dehydration stagnated all symptoms.

Nearly a year later, just as symptioms slowly began to reappear, Teresa was given another clue into the potential cause and cure of "Fibromyalgia" as she began taking a supplement for Candida overgrowth, due to the countless yeast infection she'd incurred. Because the supplement seemed to help, she began to read more about the condition of Candidiasis.

Noticing the extensive overlap of syptoms and pre-existing conditions, she began researching modes of treatment for Candidiasis rather than traditional medicine's way of treating Fibromyalgia, which provided virtually no relief. Not surprisingly, treating the Candidiasis drastically improved the Fibromyalgia symptoms. Teresa managed to maintain a healthy level of existance from that point on, trying numerous methods of therapy, both traditional and non-traditional.

As a graduate student, Teresa was involved in a research project in which she prepared a presentation of empirical evidence concluding that Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Candidiasis and Immune dysfunction are indeed One & the Same.

This book tells Teresa's story, as well as others' personal journeys with affliction. It includes Teresa's research thesis in its entirety, and current modes of treatment, both traditional and non-traditional, stressing througth experience, which methods have worked best for her. ... Read more

Product Description
Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia are like thieves, stealing from their victims. They take lives and leave people who have the diseases in pain and totally drained. People are affected physically, emotionally, sexually, socially, and financially. The lucky ones can function... somewhat. Some people with these illnesses are so weak and debilitated they feel that they couldn't move to save themselves if their house was on fire.

This book makes it clear that the symptoms are real, not something that is trivial or imagined. It urges the reader to accept the disease, learn to cope with its ups and downs, and search for ways to make life better. There is no cure yet, but this book describes ways to live more fully. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So Helpful!
Reading this book was like sitting down for a long chat with someone who genuinely cared about me and who understood me.It is full of wisdom, humour, antecdotes, and practical suggestions to help those who have these diseases cope with them.I can see people returning to it again and again, consulting different chapters depending on their need at the moment. The advice is practical and considerate. The range of subjects covered (emotional and physical needs, medication advice, how to talk to a doctor, and how to understand lab tests are just a few!) is immense and will be useful in all sorts of situations. The suggestions are given as suggestions and not mandates, which I also appreciated.I particularly loved the suggested daily diary in the Appendix that would help someone chronicle and study what exactly makes them feel worse or better. It is excellent and thorough. If you have these diseases or love someone who does, buy the book and be prepared to learn, laugh, cry and grow in your understanding.Great job!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for everyone.
This book is for everyone.Well written and reader friendly, it is useful not only for people who suffer from CFS or Fibromyalgia, but also for those who know people who do.It is valuable for any person who has undergone medical tests for vague symptoms and received no specific diagnosis or treatment plan. This book invites the reader to formulate an attitude adjustment about illness of any kind and is filled with information about tests, medications, and nutrition as well as a lot of good common sense about things that affect us all such as sleep, exercise and stress.A healthy person will learn techniques on how to live better but also how to have compassion for people who struggle with illness. Those of us who are not privileged to have a medical background will find this book sufficeintly technical to be helpful, simple enough to understand and practical enough to apply.Every library should have a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
This book was a long time coming.Women have been suffering for many many years with these symptoms and no doctor could explain them or at least give them the assurance that they were really sick and not mentally ill or a hypchondriac. This book has helped me immensely and I would recommend it to any woman who has the feeling she knows something is wrong with her but no doctor has been able to help her.It will give woman who suffer from both CFS or Fibromyalgia their life back!

5-0 out of 5 stars 34 Names for One Set of Symptoms
If you check out the cover of this book, you will see 34 names that have all been given to the same set of symptoms: pain, foggy thinking, lack of energy, and 83 more symptoms listed in the book. No one knows for sure what causes the symptoms for any of these diseases.

People have reported these symptoms, but doctors, employers, and loved ones have not believed them.

That's the great message of this book. The pain is real. The foggy thinking is real. The lack of energy is real. We are not alone. Others have had the same problems and learned to cope with the disease, whatever its name.

Nancy Fowler and Lisa Ball have put together a practical book that describes the problems associated with this set of diseases and then offers solutions. You can see that they have been helping others for a long time. They talk about medical tests and how to advocate for appropriate lab work. They discuss traditional and alternate therapies, medications, nutrition, exercise, and sleep. I may not agree with every bit of the book (I think they should have included Emotional Freedom Techniques), but overall it is a really helpful set of ideas. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Discover the answer to the mysteries of these debilitating illnesses

Explaining “Unexplained Illnesses” provides long-sought explanations for the properties of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), fibromyalgia, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This groundbreaking book examines common symptoms and signs; short-term stressors such as infection, chemical exposure, physical trauma, and severe psychological stress; why people are often diagnosed as having more than one of these illnesses, and approaches for treating the cause of each disease, rather than the symptoms. The book presents a detailed and well-supported mechanism (the NO/ONOO- cycle) that provides consistent explanations for many of the puzzling elements of these diseases.

At least a dozen scientists have proposed that chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, and fibromyalgia must share a common mechanism; others have suggested posttraumatic stress disorder may belong to this group as well. This unique book provides explanations for their previously unexplained properties with more than 1,500 references to scientific literature, creating a whole new approach to therapy and treatment of these illnesses.

Explaining "Unexplained Illnesses" provides answers to these questions:

  • how do short-term stressors initiate chronic illness?
  • how does the biochemistry of the NO/ONOO- cycle produce chronic illness?
  • how can the diverse symptoms and signs of these illnesses be generated as a consequence of their common biochemistry?
  • why is there so much variation in symptoms from one sufferer to another?
  • what are the principles underlying the NO/ONOO- cycle mechanism?
  • how does the NO/ONOO- cycle provide explanations for a dozen previously unexplained properties of these illnesses?
  • how might 14 additional illnesses/diseases also be caused by the NO/ONOO- cycle etiology?
  • and many more
Explaining “Unexplained Illnesses” is a must-read for physicians and scientists, and for anyone who suffers from-or knows someone who suffers from—these previously puzzling illnesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new paradigm for chronic illness
Explaining Unexplained Illnesses
Disease Paradigm for:Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Fibromyalgia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Gulf War Syndrome, and Others
By Martin Pall, PhD (Informa Health Care 2009)

By Jackie Steincamp, New Zealand

Dr Pall opens our eyes to the altered biochemistry in chronic disease.A marvellous argument - but awarning, this book is not for the fainthearted, woolly-headed or medically and scientifically ignorant!
Hel presents the NO/ONOO (pronounced, aptly, "No, oh no!) cycle as the causal mechanism for CFS, FM, MCS, PTSD and related illnesses.Nitric oxide (NO) itself has many useful functions in the body, but if its levels are too high, its oxidant by-product, peroxynitrite (ONOO) propagates itself and creates a chronic vicious cycle. He argues that therapies should focus on down-regulating the NO/ONOO cycle and presents many modalities collected from various researchers and clinicians. He quotes extensively from such CFS medical heroes as Drs Paul Cheney, David Bell, Jacob Teitelbaum, Grace Ziem, and Garth Nicolson.
Dr Pall has written and researched M.E./CFS illnesses for many years. He is Professor of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University. His long term interests in the body's regulatory systems and free radicals. Among his many distinguished activities, he is on the editorial board of the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Haworth).
He shows that NO/ONOO damage can be quite local within the body, impacting on one tissue, but not necessarily another.Different people suffering from these illnesses thus can have an infinite variety of symptoms and signs produced by this variation in tissue distribution.Increased inflammatory processes are also engendered by high levels of peroxynitrite and may be quite localized.
He draws from world wide research to argue that whatever type of "unexplained illness" is concerned, that genetic susceptibility leading to hormonal abnormalities arekey factors."No! Oh no!" is not the basic problem. The individual's genetics and hormonal balance are the determining factors.
Lengthy explanations of why agents such as glutathione, selenium, flavonoids, magnesium, carnosine and carnitine (and many others) show why they help down-regulate the ONOO cycle.Summaries oftreatment protocols (all heavily anti-oxidant) from four leading M.E./CFS specialists illustrate how they may be used in treatment. .
Dr Pall provides a remarkable argument on what is surely a central thesis of chronic unexplained and fatiguing illnesses:namely that oxidative stress mechanisms point the way to any therapeutic approach. There is a wealth of information in this book, much of it quite technical, but understandable for any informed and determined reader.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good in parts but misleading about ME and 'CFS'
It is important to note that Pall should not be considered a M.E. expert and that when he refers to `CFS' this information should not be assumed to apply in whole or in part to M.E.

Some of what he is saying generally may possibly be relevant to M.E. patients to some extent (as regards treatment, rather than symptomatology or aetiology, as it does with multiple sclerosis for example), but this is as yet unclear due to the fact he unfortunately makes no distinction between fatigue and `CFS' and the distinct neurological disease M.E.

M.E. is NOT at all a medically unexplained illness, and has little in common with the conditions Pall claims `share many symptoms and often occur together' such as PTSD and MCS and Fibromyalgia - unlike `CFS.' As Pall claims, `CFS' (or rather, those illnesses which are misdiagnosed as `CFS') can be caused by many different things including bacterial infections, psychological stress and physical trauma but this makes it very clear that when Pall refers to `CFS' he is not referring to genuine M.E.

Anyone who describes an illness that is based on fatigue, is medically unexplained, has symptoms similar to Fibromyalgia or PTSD etc., and that can be caused by many different things such as trauma, physical and emotional stress and bacterial infection and common virus infections such as EBV or herpes etc., IS NOT REFERRING TO M.E. and is not knowledgeable about even the most basic facts of M.E.

The research is very clear that M.E. is not (and cannot) be caused by stress, trauma or bacterial infections and so on. M.E. is caused by a virus, an enterovirus and is primarily a testable and measurable neurological disease with many distinct features and unique symptoms.

Please, if you have a 'CFS' (mis)diagnosis, do everything you can to find your correct diagnosis, do not accept 'CFS' ever as an end point to the process of diagnosis. This theory may have some merit as regards M.E., some of it fits, but this information is inaccurate with many basic facts about M.E. so please go elsewhere for that info!

Jodi Bassett, HFME

5-0 out of 5 stars An in depth explanation
In this book you will find an in depth etiology of 4 little known diseases (MCS, CFS, PTSD and FM). Their causes, mechanism and how to fight them efficiently.
As well as some thought about collaterals, such as the difficulty to diagnose, the ignorance and skepticism of most people including, sadly, medical profession. And some number on how wide spread (and ignored) they are.
There is a wealth of reference at the end of the book (about 120 pages of them!)

Also you'll find also conjectures on numerous other disease, such as Asthma, Allergy, Lupus.

It was a great read. Although, not being a MD or biologist myself, some passage were a bit difficult and I just browsed over them.

5-0 out of 5 stars beacon of hope
Dr. Pall's book explains what I want ever doctor and family member or friend to finally understand. MCS is a real, and tragic, illness that results from the casual attitude we have with chemicals in our environment and this is what is happening. The book is an excellent text for the average person, and those with a non-scientific mind, as Dr. Pall teaches a basic science class on the NO/ONOO process responsible for the illnesses which many of us have had to live with for years. As I read the book I felt hope for all who suffer from one of these. More important still is the treatment formula that Dr. Pall, Dr. Grace Ziem and Jim Seymour have introduced. This treatment has changed my life. I highly recommend this book; buy several and gift them to every doctor you know...It's that important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book all doctors should read and all with chemical injury
I read this book which I now plan to give to my Dr. so he can read it also.I suffer from this illness and really appreciate this book altho some of it was above my head.I learned lots from what I was able to read and understand.I recommend it for all who are suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and chemical injury and also for ALL doctors. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Woefully out of date
I bought the ebooks version of this, and was extremely disappointed to find it was a re-issue of a book last issued in 1989. The author's personal story is interesting, but the medical information is seriously outdated, and the tone is very depressing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't read if you're looking for current or accurate scientific data
While reading how others have coped with illnesses can be encouraging, especially for the new patient, this book is definitely not your source for the best, most accurate, up to date information on this topic.Though the illness termed "CFS" is mysterious, lacks diagnostic tests and a true treatment protocol, the organic, neurological illness M.E. has none of those problems. It is not mysterious, it is the same in every patient, there are a variety of diagnostic tests that can accurately and reliably identify M.E. patients, and are there are some specific medications and coping techniques that can help.If you want to learn about the real illness M.E. you'll have to look for a book by Dr. Byron Hyde.

2-0 out of 5 stars The author is lovely, but this is outdated and incorrect
This book means well, the author clearly means well, but this book reinforces all the misinformation spread about 'CFS' by people like the CDC etc. Almost all of the medical information here is outdated, incorrect and irrelevant to those with actual M.E. Some desciptions of symptoms (including the author's) related to M.E. but that was about it. Most of the information was about 'CFS' and almost all of the medical information given was about 'CFS.'

The poor quality information in this book was a real lost opportunity to do some good. This type of misinformation and lack of political awareness is a big part of why we have made so very little progress over the last 20 years. I don't understand why some patients still recommend this book to fellow M.E. patients. It's hugely problematic. It is so outdated, and so propaganda supporting.

Not recommended, unless perhaps you just read the comments on coping (and ignore all the medical information) which are quite good in some places.

To be clear, the author is a lovely man and he wrote some great stuff in this book about the disease and the symptoms and coping and so on, really wonderful, it is just that all the medical and political information is wrong and unhelpful.

If you have a 'CFS' (mis)diagnosis, do everything you can to find your correct diagnosis, do not accept 'CFS' ever as an end point to the process of diagnosis. 'CFS' is always a misdiagnosis and 'CFS' is NOT M.E.! That needs to be point one of any activism campaign if we are ever to get anywhere!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for patients
Chronic Fatigue SYNDROME is not the same thing as the SYMPTOM of "chronic fatigue".Too many doctors use the term interchangeably. This book will explain the difference.

CDC has recently announced that CFS is a "real disease", and that they have determined that the people most likely to get CFS after a viral illness are the ones who were most severely sickened by the virus.

This book is written like a medical textbook -- while it's an excellent addition to your library if you're already a student of CFS, it's not a good choice for the layperson patient as a first book.(For that purpose, I'd suggest David S. Bell or Katrina Berne.)It would, however, make a nice Christmas gift for your doctor, who can actually understand all the technical stuff in it.

I would recommend that every medical group and medical library get a copy of this book for reference. It explains the disease and its effects (medical and social) in ways that are hard to understand unless you're living with it 24/7.You'll be able to understand what your patients are experiencing in ways that they may not be able to explain, either because they lack the words or because a 7-minute appointment is not enough time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm ME again!
I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
On May 20th, 2006, I found the Mickel Therapy website and read it.
Then I ordered this book and read it.
I began applying the Mickel Therapy process to the best of my understanding and seeing improvements in my health.

June 13th I had my first session with a Mickel Therapist.

October 2006, I am well and have not had any symptoms for a month.
I have just ordered five copies of this book for friends who have CFS/ME, FM, IBS, Depression or Anxiety.

The book doesn't appear to have been proofread but I found the content brilliant and believe that it contains the keys to open the doors to excellent health for most everyone, not just CFS sufferers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is a must read for those who suffer from these chronic conditions, as well as for those with an interest in health more generally.

As I understand it, the book is designed to be read by those suffering from the conditions of Chronic Fatigue, Post Viral Fatigue, ME and Fibromyalgia. It is brief because many sufferers have problems with concentration and memory.Dr Mickel is trying to convey complex information in a simple manner and I believe he is successful in this venture.

I, unlike the first reviewer, know a number of people who have been successfully treated by Dr Mickel and his colleagues. His claims are far from ludicrous.Increasing numbers of professionals concur with the role of the hypothalamus in these conditions and the approach Dr Mickel takes of treating the cause of the problems rather than just the effect or symptoms seems eminently sensible!.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book is expensive - about 70 pages for $16.
It is poorly written and some of the claims made
by Dr Mickel are frankly ludicrous - for example
- that he had 'a 100% success' rate curing his
clients.

He says Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is caused by
disturbances in the energy of the cells but
doesn't give any proof or explain how.

Nor does the book say much about how the 'cure'
actually works - so that people have to pay to
come and find out?

5-0 out of 5 stars There is hope!
This is highly recommended for anyone suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME or Fibromyalgia. Dr Mickel explains the theory behind Mickel Reverse Therapy, an exciting new treatment for these conditions. It is relatively short and easy to understand, which is crucial for sufferers who are unable to concentrate for long periods of time. Nevertheless, it serves to introduce the reader to the key concepts behind the treatment. For anyone suffering from these conditions and considering undertaking Mickel Reverse Therapy, reading this book will help answer many questions and will serve as a first step to a cure. There is hope! ... Read more
