Product Description

Ever since children have learned to read, there has been children’s literature. Children’s Literature charts the makings of the Western literary imagination from Aesop’s fables to Mother Goose, from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Peter Pan, from Where the Wild Things Are to Harry Potter.

The only single-volume work to capture the rich and diverse history of children’s literature in its full panorama, this extraordinary book reveals why J. R. R. Tolkien, Dr. Seuss, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Beatrix Potter, and many others, despite their divergent styles and subject matter, have all resonated with generations of readers. Children’s Literature is an exhilarating quest across centuries, continents, and genres to discover how, and why, we first fall in love with the written word.

“Lerer has accomplished something magical. Unlike the many handbooks to children’s literature that synopsize, evaluate, or otherwise guide adults in the selection of materials for children, this work presents a true critical history of the genre. . . . Scholarly, erudite, and all but exhaustive, it is also entertaining and accessible. Lerer takes his subject seriously without making it dull.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“Lerer’s history reminds us of the wealth of literature written during the past 2,600 years. . . . With his vast and multidimensional knowledge of literature, he underscores the vital role it plays in forming a child’s imagination. We are made, he suggests, by the books we read.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“There are dazzling chapters on John Locke and Empire, and nonsense, and Darwin, but Lerer’s most interesting chapter focuses on girls’ fiction. . . . A brilliant series of readings.”—Diane Purkiss, Times Literary Supplement

5-0 out of 5 stars The best dreams come from having been read to sleep
"Children's Literature" is on the ROROTOKO list of cutting-edge intellectual nonfiction. Professor Lerer's book interview ran here as the cover feature on May 17, 2010.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children's Literature: A reader's HIstory from Aesop to Harry Potter
Interesting perspective on children's literature.Begins from the premise that children's literacy, and reading materials for children have gone back to the Greeks if not before. In addition to putting the literature of children in historical context, the author also delves into the various symbols and meanings which children's literature carries for all of us.Creative, scholarly, and incredibly comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth Of Scholarship And Interest
I love to read and reread classic children's literature, ancient and modern.Seth Lerer has provided a highly scholarly but extremely accessible and enjoyable work on its history.I had some misgivings in purchasing this, because in my experience too much analysis can kill even the most fervent attachment. But I realized I had nothing to fear when I found chapter after chapter of absorbing information.I learned so much that I never knew about old favorites like Aesop's fables, and found so many unexpected connections, like the link between Charles Darwin and Dr. Seuss!

In a work covering such a broad field and span of time much must be summarized or barely touched upon.I would have loved to have read more about Harriet the Spy, for example. But this book was a delight to read and will be a treasure to keep and refer to again and again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bible of Children's Literature
I am finishing up my master's program soon. In doing research onCharlotte Huck, I found this book. It has so much "no nonsense" information in it! Everything Huck has said since the first edition of this book has been right on the money. I am a literacy coach for K-5, and I think that this book is by far the best resource I have. It tells which books to use for certain grade levels, genres, subject areas... AND it tells a little bit about the books that theauthors chose. It is chock full of the history of reading, understanding why literature is the way it is, and resources for all areas. I recommend this book for anyone who teaches reading to children, or has a love of reading to his/her own children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for children and adults alike!
Any Norton's Anthology of Literature is wonderfully extensive, and this Children's Literature edition is no exception. The book ranges from early Puritan literature to modern stories that are great for children. I would recommend this book for parents who wish to pass a tradition of reading to their kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Norton Anthology of Children's Literature
This is a great book for someone wanting a more complex addition of Children's Literature. This book is FULL of stories, unlike others I've read, these stories are not the childish ones you have been read in the past. The detail is great.I would not recommend you read these stories to young children, the stories are full of so much detail, it does make them quite long.

4-0 out of 5 stars it's....huge
I have this book as a textbook this semester and it has great info.It might have TOO much info though.Reading entire genres with this book can be a chore on the mind because the book is so large and intimidating to begin with. Also, the introductions for genres and authors are a bit too "acedemic" and bland;I constantly find myself looking to see how many pages are left to a chapter, due to lost interest. The upside and reason for 4 stars:the inclusion of full pieces of literature from the beggining of book-making to the present;the wealth of great stories will keep a mind feeding for many days(or a full semester.)While it can be tedious,it's worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource, as Well as Enjoyable
This book is HUGE! I love the hard slipcover this book comes in, which keeps the book in great condition. This book is definitely informative and has tons of children's stories arranged by genre, such as Fantasy, Adventure, Chapbooks, ABC's, Picture Books, Fairy Tales, etc. The introductions to each section are greatly helpful b/c they contain tons of historical background on the type of children's literature. This book would probably be very useful for a teacher, and I would definitely recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where is Margaret Wise Brown?
Although impressed with the breadth and quality of this anthology, as a children's librarian I was shocked to discover that any mention of Margaret Wise Brown is entirely missing. She is a seminal author in Anglo-American children's literature, so much so that even Yale University devoted an entire afternoon's lecture to her at a children's literature conference in 1999.Other, more recent and therefore much less classic or influential authors are included in this anthology; therefore, surely there is room for Wise Brown as well.Other than this rather gaping hole, this is a fine representation of the body of children's literature through the centuries with well-written historical remarks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Such a good book for a lit. student
I love this book because the chapters are short and to the point. There's no interpretation required for reading this book, unlike some college texts I've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent teacher resource
Excellent teacher resource. It provides information about all kinds of children's literature available, explains what can it be used for, and provides lists of books for each category. The CD is also an excellent resource and gives you the opportunity to make your own lists and save for future use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Had to buy it for class.Regardless, came in good condition and it's a pretty good book. Not too much details into each chapter but good if you want an overall review on different children's literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for new teachers
This book isn't bogged down by various author histories or long-winded, complicated psychological breakdowns of why the authors think a particular book has more merit than others like many textbooks do. Instead, Tunnel and Jacobs get down to the nuts and bolts new teachers need to actually get children to read! With simple examples and amazing tools like booklists and the easy to use database, this book gives the teacher the essential keystones to teach and read children's literacy and then pushes the teacher to be a good role model and get out there and read! It is certain to have a permanent place in my resource library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best I've reviewed
As a professor of children's lit, I am frequently frustrated at the poor choices of textbooks available in the field. This one is pretty good -- I especially like its frequent mention of various contemporary texts as well as classics and award winners. It covers the basics of most of the genres within children's lit and unlike a lot of books in the field, isn't patronizing or saccharine about childhood or children's lit.

That being said, the biggest obstacle to my adopting this text is its price -- this text is NOT enough on its own, and I can't justify asking my students to pay $100 bucks for this book and purchase additional trade texts.I would still recommend this text as a good reference for those who can afford it. ... Product Description

Vardell provides an introduction to children and their literature through an activity-oriented survey of books that should be in your library. Written for librarians, the book offers practical applications to help you share books with children, as well as plans for book-based programs and ways to collaborate with teachers and families to share books with children. Each chapter includes brief insets of author comments, collaborative activities, featured books, special topics and activities, selected awards and celebrations, historical connections, recommended resources, issues for discussion, and assignment suggestions.

The author, a former President of the U.S. Board on Books for Young People, has written an affordable text especially for school and children's librarians and faculty teaching both undergraduate and graduate students who are studying to be school and children's librarians. While similar texts on this subject are designed for teachers, this is an activities-oriented survey of children's literature written especially for students seeking licensure and degrees leading to careers working with children in schools and public libraries. All the pieces are there, the explanations of the genres, introductions to authors and illustrations, and the use of specific titles with their audiences, and the literature is carefully linked to active practice in libraries. Chapters are enriched by brief insets of authors? comments, collaborative activities, selected awards and celebrations, historical connections, recommended resources, issues for discussion, and assignment suggestions.

The framework for this text adds a layer of practical application in every chapter for the librarian who shares books with children, plans book-based programs, and collaborates with teachers and families in sharing books and developing literature-based instruction. What does a librarian need to know about how to select and share books in each genre? What are the usual promotion and collaboration activities associated with each genre? This book answers those questions while maintaining its focus on literature for children. Embedded in a genre approach to literature, it has a unique focus on the librarian or future librarian.

Sylvia Vardell communicates her love of children's literature beautifully in this helpful text. I bought this as part of a library studies course and have enjoyed the read. Product Description

Introducing the study of children's literature, this book addresses theoretical questions as well as the most relevant critical approaches to the field.

The fourteen chapters draw on insights from academic disciplines ranging from cultural and literary studies to education and psychology, and include an essay on what writers for children think about their craft. This results in a fascinating range of perspectives on key topics in children's literature and an introduction to such diverse concerns as literacy, ideology, stylistics, feminism, history and culture, and bibliotherapy. An extensive general bibliography is complemented by lists of further reading for every chapter and a glossary defines critical and technical terms, making the book accessible to those coming to the field or to a particular approach for the first time.

In this second edition there are four entirely new chapters; contributors have revisited and revised or rewritten seven of the chapters to reflect new thinking, while the remaining three are classic essays, widely acknowledged to be definitive. The glossary, further reading lists and general bibliography have also been thoroughly updated.

Understanding Children's Literature is an invaluable guide for students of literature or education and it will also inform and enrich the practice of teachers and librarians.

Product Description
White Supremacy in Children's Literature is a compelling and penetrating study of the white supremacy myth in books for the young. Donnarae MacCann explores the intersection of child and adult culture and reveals how the political, literary and social contexts of many children's stories have paralleled the way adult books, schools, churches and government maligned black identity, culture and intelligence. The volume examines how links between the socialization of children and conservative trends in the 19th century foretold 20th century disregard for social justice in American social policy. MacCann further demonstrates that cultural pluralism, an ongoing corrective to white supremacist fabrications, is informed by the insights and historical assessments offered in this essential study. ... Product Description

Designed to facilitate the use of children's books from all genres, this exceptional resource helps teachers, librarians, and media specialists select the best children’s literature for the classroom, library, or home.

Unlike an anthology of children's literature, which includes selected chapters or text summaries, the Eighth Edition of this highly regarded book teaches how to select quality children's literature. Using the critical standards for all literature, examples of children’s books provide the basis for an explanation of critical principles and special issues in judging books for children.

Taking readers through the definitions of literary terms such as plot, character, theme, setting, point of view, style, and tone, Lukens provides sound criteria for assessing the merit of children's books. The book also includes chapters on rhymes, poetry, biography, and informational books. A new and enlarged section addresses censorship and a new chapter addresses the benefits of reading, its significance for children, and its growth in popularity among adults.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my forte but it was useful
I took a children's lit class during a summer semester and the required text was this book. I thought it was okay as an introduction to the broad selection within this subject. I'm not sure if it is the best book out there, but it has been a good reference while on the job.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, and boring.
Horrible, horrible book unless you are writing a doctoral thesis. The author hates didactism, yet she does not explain things enough and give enough definitions. She spends the majority of the book quoting children's books as fluff to create a big book.Organized poorly.I only read it because it was required for my class I was taking. The book did nothing but give me a headache and put me to sleep.I cannot see how it has made it to print, let alone being the eight edition.Very boring book that does nothing to encourage the reader to love children's literature. The author does not even have a full glossary or index. Many terms and definitions are in the chapters, but no in the glossary or index. The book is not worth the money spent for it.Waste of money and time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for educators, parents& librarians.
Before reading this book the benign racist occlusions present in childhood favorites was just not a concern.Afterward, it was apparent that the opinions expressed in supposed innocent children's books lead towards prejudicial attitudes in the traditions these books perpetuate. ie.Babar, the elephant(colonialism; Afican elephant civilized in the custodial care of the French caregiver in the wake of the murder of his mother by the "hunter" in which he in turn civilizes his jungle kingdom and has a rival that is bestial and favors Egyptian (read;Arab,Coptic)culture. This book identifies prevaling opinions and attitudes about Afro/African Culture through the eyes of traditional opinions of non-Blacks which lead to a disrespect of contributions made by non-Whites unintentionally by well meaning people of all groups. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars book is great, took a week & a half to arrive
the book is in great condition. But it took a week and a half to arrive. While this is still within the allotted time-frame, I've found other places ship more promptly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for parents & educators!
I purchased this book over two years ago, and find myself reading it again and again for it is such a useful compendium of children's literature. The book itself is beautifully bound and contains numerous black-and-white illustrations, as well as full color illustrations. It is divided into 6 parts,
i. Children's poetry [Mother Goose, other nursery rhymes, singing games, jingles, chants, counting-out rhymes], riddles, puzzles, and tongue twisters, lullabies & folk songs, nonsense verse, the storytelling tradition [ballads, narrative poetry], poems of a child's world, poems of imagination, poems of nature, poems of reflection].
ii. Picture books [text, selection & history]
iii. The oral tradition [ fables, folktales from different countries around the world, myths, legends, and sacred writings[Judeo-Christian, Islamic etc, epics and romances, story-telling]
iv. Fiction [realistic & historical fiction, fantasy & science fiction]
v. Nonfiction [ biography covering such famous people as Beatrix Potter, Gandhi, Anne Frank, also covering tracel & history, and science]
vi. Readings on children's literature [the creators, the critics]

and finally it ends with a very useful selected bibliography of children's lit, and has an appendix, and subject index, as well as an author, illustrator, and title index.

This is a truly valuable resource for parents, teachers, and anyone interested in children's literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
When I was a young, my mom was taking college classes and got this book for her class on children's lit. When the class was over, we would sit around and flip through the 1000s of poems, fairy tales and story excerpts from ya novels.
Now the book is on my shelf, and I pull it down to find poems to read to my daughter.
Completely enjoyable book for those looking for tons of poems/stories from around the world for children, and for those who want to learn more about the poems/stories themselves.

Product Description
Literature for children appears in many genres, each with itsown conventions and traditions. But beyond the mechanical devices, beyondthe crafting of a well-wrought tale, lies wisdom of heart. Wisdom of heart isexperienced by child and adult alike, but sharing the experience is sometimesas difficult for the adult as it is for the child. Butler's book brings adults intoactive participation in sharing literature with children, challenging adults toconfront the inner child in themselves. She calls this "restorying the adult." Inaddition, she shows how literature can be shared with children in conjunctionwith storytelling, games, dancing, singing, puppetry, acting out, and otherfascinating and creative activities. Using the best available standards of literarytaste and an educated intuition, Butler chose pieces for feeling, value, quality, and balance. The five themes that form the major divisions of the book: Toysand Games, Fools, Masks and Shadows, Sex Roles, and Circles, greworganically from a decade of study of the shared literary interests of childrenand adults. Each section is further divided by genre; in over one hundred andsixty selections, she presents folktales, folk rhymes, folk plays, fantasy, fiction, poetry, essays, mythology, fables, drama, biography, and biblical writing. Farfrom being a comprehensive book that tries to cover the field or present amicrocosm of the child's experience, or the human experience, or experience ofthe universe, and so on, Sharing Literature with Children is only the beginningof a great experience that opens out into the almost limitless potential of theworld of great literature for children, or for that matter, of all literature. ... Product Description
Some of the most innovative and spell-binding literature has been written for young people, but only recently has academic study embraced its range and complexity. This Companion offers a state-of-the-subject survey of English-language children's literature from the seventeenth century to the present. With discussions ranging from eighteenth-century moral tales to modern fantasies by J. K. Rowling and Philip Pullman, the Companion illuminates acknowledged classics and many more neglected works. Its unique structure means that equal consideration can be given to both texts and contexts. Some chapters analyse key themes and major genres, including humour, poetry, school stories, and picture books. Others explore the sociological dimensions of children's literature and the impact of publishing practices. Written by leading scholars from around the world, this Companion will be essential reading for all students and scholars of children's literature, offering original readings and new research that reflects the latest developments in the field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Science Activities
I love this book.Examples of chapters are Airplanes, Measurement, Energy and Motion, Force and Movement, Volcanoes, Trees, Reptiles... and more. Each subject has a storybook suggested to read and then there are tons of hands on activities offered to go along with the storybook. This book is along the same lines as Five in a Row.Terrific for lower elementary children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad science
The idea is interesting, but if you can't get basic facts straight, what are you actually teaching them? Need I point further than the misspelled "mantel" [sic] on the cover? Ok, how about listing Mars as the 2nd planet from the Sun (p. 135)? I found these two errors in my first 3 minutes looking at this book. They wash over the more difficult concepts to the point where you aren't really learning anything at all, and what you learn is up to widely varying interpretations. Fortunately, Amazon users can use the "Search Inside" feature to see for themselves.

Again, the idea is interesting, but they need to work on the delivery, and make sure the fundamentals are correct. Right now, avoid until at least the 3rd or 4th edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but a Big Piece is Missing

I thought this book looked really interesting, teaching science through literature was an innovative way to introduce science topics. So I bought this book thinking that I could use it to teach my kindergartner various science topics. There are 33 chapters divided into 4 parts (Part 1- Using Children's Literature as a Springboard to Science; Part 2- Life Science; Part 3- Earth and Space Science; and Part 4- Physical Science). Each chapter is laid out by first recommending a book to read (i.e. "The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle for the chapter on spiders). Next there is a 1-2 page summary of the book, then 1-2 lines of science and content related topics & words. Finally, there is a list of activities suggested for a variety of ages.

What I would have liked is for the author to include a summary of the actual topic (i.e. 4-5 bullet points on spiders). In my opinion, this is a big piece missing, and hence the reason why I gave this book only 3 stars. If you don't know a fair amount about the topics, you will need to do further research if you want to use this book to teach. If you're looking for a supplement to match books with science topics and activities, this is it.
