5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book came out around the same time I caught the chicken pox in elementary school (back when most every kid was expected to catch it at one point or another), and I remember reading it while taking oatmeal baths and enjoying the days off school. It's a fun book and good for helping your kid get through it with good humor. It's pretty nostalgic for me, but I definitely loved it back while I was sick.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Fun Primer - a review of "Itchy, Itchy Chicken Pox"
I don't know about yours, but my children are fascinated by the old fashion childhood diseases like Chicken Pox and Measles.Go figure-- but somehow it rates right up there with loosing your teeth. As a consequence, this book is very popular at our house. In fact, my newly turned 5 y.o. son made his dad and I read it with him four times last night.

As a primer it has a lot going for it.There's rhyme and pictures to give 'clues' as to what the words might be.And the print is large, well spaced for new readers, and there isn't a great deal of it.

On the down side, there are a few words that are harder, such as: yucky, mucky, itchy, twitchy, scratch, batch, and between. As you see though, there's repetition in the base forms (-atch and -ucky) so children can get some good practice.

Four Stars.Very Good Read-aloud.The topic is of keen interest to small fry and the text has a nice rhyme.Good primer material for fairly early readers. My just turned 5 y.o. had very little problem with reading it after the first time through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Easy Science Book
I loved having this book available to my kindergarten students.Students checked this book out to take home and every time it came back to school the kids said it was a great book. The illustrations add to the humor of the book, and the words are understandable enough for beginning readers.Great for a classroom library.

4-0 out of 5 stars cute book
my little sister had this years ago and I would read it to her. when she came down with chicken pox herself she was well prepared

5-0 out of 5 stars Itchy, Itchy Chicken Pox
My daughter and I have enjoyed reading this book numerous times. The theme was very appropiate recently when there was an outbreak of chicken pox in her school. The story highlights different aspects of chicken poxand help to prepare or soothe a child who has been exposed and/or fightingthe "itch" battle. This is a good book for beginning readersbecause of the repetiveness and flow of the text.I would stronglyrecommend this book to beginner and not-so-beginner readers. ... Product Description

Goldie Locks has

chicken pox;

from head to toe

were polka dots....

When Goldie Locks spies her first spot, her mother knows it must be chicken pox. Soon after, a steady stream of storybook favorites -- including the Three Bears and Little Bo Peep -- stop by to wish Goldie Locks a speedy recovery. But how will Goldie get well when her little brother just won't stop teasing her?Amazon.com Review
As if the itching and fever of chicken pox isn't bad enough, poor little Goldie Locks can't visit with her friends Red Riding Hood and Bo Peep, and her younger brother is positively ruthless in his teasing. What's a fairy tale gal to do? Wait for Bro's karmic comeuppance, that's what. And if the law of traveling germs holds true, the uppance will come quickly.

Erin Dealey's rhyming lark plays havoc with favorite storybook characters, from Henny Penny to Jack (Goldie's brother calls out the window: "Jack, be nimble! Jack, be quick! / Come and see! My sister's sick!"). Illustrator Hanako Wakiyama's Goldie Locks, with her big, spotted face and tiny blonde braids, is the picture of wretchedness, while her naughty tow-headed sibling is fiendish in his bursting good health (for now, anyway). The distinctive artwork in retro reds and oranges is chock-full of witty details and child-friendly perspectives. Young readers who have suffered at the hands of bratty brothers and sisters will identify immediately with Goldie's frustration and cheer when Little Brother finally gets his just and speckled deserts. 4-0 out of 5 stars Cute story
Poor Goldie Locks. She has chicken pox.

We rhyme our way through the large cast of Mother Goose figures and one annoying baby brother (who, after being so annoying to his sister, including playing connect-the-dots on her face, eventually gets sick himself, a just desert if I ever saw one!)

Cute, retro illustrations and nice rhymes. I'm not as thrilled with the book as my nieces are, but they like it enough to justify giving it the fourth star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever!
By far the favorite book of my 7 and 4 yr. olds! They both can recite every single word.Buy this book, you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars refreshingly fun
I have to give this book 5 stars in every way! The illustrations featuring a mid-century modern house are to die for and the storyline is funny and it rhymes. Kids seem to gravitate toward this book, even if they don't know what Chicken Pox are anymore! =)

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a Fun Book!
I loved everything about this book! The artwork, the story, the fairy tales personalities that show up--it's great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A slightly somber addition to the world of Amber Brown
Third grader, Amber Brown, has experienced one very trying year. First, her parents informed her that not only were they getting a divorce, but that her father was moving to France to take on a new job. Then, to add even more drama to the mix, her best friend since preschool, Justin Daniels, up and left New Jersey to accompany his family in Arizona where his father had taken on a new job. Now, while Amber is happy to be embarking on the unknown world of fourth grade, she's upset to be leaving her beloved teacher, Mr. Cohen, behind. Mr. Cohen has made learning fun, and his frequent trips to foreign countries with his class will sorely be missed - especially by Amber. Luckily, this year Amber has something to look forward to during her summer vacation. First, she will be flying to London to spend two weeks with her Aunt Pam in England - a place where people drive on the wrong side of the road. Then, she'll be flying to Paris, France, where she'll be spending time with her father, whom she hasn't seen in what seems like forever. However, Amber's plans instantly change when she gets to London and realizes that she has come down with a case of chicken pox. Amber is horrified. With chicken pox, she can't possibly see the sights that London has to offer, or visit her father in France. Amber just knows that her summer is completely ruined, and can't believe her luck. That is, until she discovers that having the chicken pox isn't as bad as she originally thought - especially when you're surrounded by people you love.

In AMBER BROWN IS NOT A CRAYON, Paula Danziger tackled the issue of having your best friend move away. In YOU CAN'T EAT YOUR CHICKEN POX AMBER BROWN, Danziger tackles another issue - even more serious than the last - divorce - yet manages to keep it light-hearted, and easy-to-understand for young readers. Amber Brown, as always, is her usual chatty self, with her perky disposition, and a penchant for finding the humorous side in any situation. While the majority of the tale takes place in a London flat, it is in this location where Amber truly comes face-to-face with the many monsters that are haunting her - from a sudden illness to her parents lingering divorce. The introduction of Amber's Aunt Pam, along with her father are a nice inclusion to the tale. However, they certainly do not take the place of Amber's best friend, Justin, or her mother. The storyline in this particular book is slightly more touching, and a little more heart-wrenching, but Danziger is able to pull it off, and showcase Amber's feisty, upbeat personality - even in the face of sorrow. A slightly somber addition to the world of Amber Brown.

4-0 out of 5 stars chicken pox
this is a cute story about a girlnamed amber brown who travels to london with her aunt on her way to see her father who lives in france.while in london, amber comes down with the chicken pox, and she never gets to make it to france, buther father does come to london to see her.the story tells about her time in london and her efforts to get her mother and father back together.this a cute book for any young child, especially those with divorced parents.the whole series is great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best of Amber Brown
I read many of the Amber Brown books with my 7-year old daughter, and generally, we love them. All of the books have a portion dedicated to the fact that her parents have split up and how she is dealing with this situation.Although my daughter cannot relate directly to that, it has lead to some interesting discussions. Most of the books have a humerous story interweaved, but unfortunately, not this one.It is a story of a girl who goes to Europe to visit her father, gets sick, and is bored sitting in her aunt's flat.We were as bored as Amber. While I would highly recommend other books (I, Amber Brown; Amber Brown Sees Red; Forever Amber Brown), I have to recommend staying away from this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Thought The Book Was Great!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of my favorite books as a child!
i was read this book and i read [ later on] many times when i was little,as I was an avid arthur fan! this was probably my favrotie and when i was 5 and got the chicken pox it was very comforting to know what would happen etc. i am just disappointed my children will not have to full opportunity to understand this book and the disease it talks about becuase of the legally required vacine and much smaller number of cases

maybe even by the time i have children this will be like small pox or polio and virtually wiped out

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Substitute
My daughter lost her library book, so this was a replacement. I didn't know she'd lost a hardback book instead of a paperback. Oh well! The book was as described and will fit beautifully into the school library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur Goes to the Circus
I read Arthur's Chicken Pox.In this book, Arthur gets the chicken pox.Arthur wakes up with red spots on his face.He gets to eat on the sofa and DW wants to eat on the sofa, too. Will Arthur ever get better...I think you should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book About Being Sick That Children Will Like - a review of "Arthur's Chicken Pox"
My take on this book results from my observations of my four and six year olds (boy and girl).I think it would be popular with children precisely for the same reason that books on loose teeth are popular:children in this age range are tremendously curious about their bodies.

My daughter went frantic for a while inquiring about loose teeth. She inspected the mouth of anyone who had missing teeth or who had wobbly ones. She asked what happened to them that they got loose, and what happened to them after they fell out....

In the same way, I see her looking at this book about chicken pox.She (and to a lesser extent, her brother) are curious about the spots, what they mean, etc. Also, I think it is just dawning on children this age that they can get very ill, and I believe it is comforting to them see that they will be cared for.

[One mom commented that she was concerned about how much loving care was lavished on Arthur and D.W. But I think it is reassuring to children.]

Four Stars.Okay Read-aloud that is interesting to children.

Turkey Pox is not your average Thanksgiving story. It's about a girl named Charity who gets the Chicken Pox on Thanksgiving. Her family has to cancel their trip to Nana's for Thanksgiving dinner, so Nana brings Thanksgiving dinner to them. There are many funny parts in this story, especially when we learned about what turkey pox were! The pictures help make the story hilarious. We think kids would love reading this book because all kids get the chicken pox.We think the author and illustrator worked very hard to come up with a creative story.
