5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Methodology
Easy to understand, concise description of experiments and techniques used in Organic Chemistry I and II

5-0 out of 5 stars Great lab technique book!
This book is a well detailed book that explains techniques for working in the organic chemistry labs. The book does not have any experiments in it, however, it is a useful tool while performing your experiments in the organic chemistry lab.Our first experiment in my class involved a simple distillation apparatus and this book was a useful tool for how to set it up.The book contains information about lab techniques as well as lab safety, proper usage of lab notebooks, and spectroscopy information.I think that book is a must have for anybody taking organic chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry Lab Techniques -- a must for new OChem students
I am taking first semester Organic Chemistry at the University of Arizona.I'm not a science major, so I have minimal laboratory experience."Making the Connections" is a small, lightweight, compact 6"x9"x1/2" lab technique book. The writing is very clear, concise and explicit. The setups are well-illustrated.There are 12 pages devoted to how to write/use a proper Student Lab Notebook: 50 Carbonless Duplicate. It explains how to approach a lab.It is well organized. You'll learn the basics of common organic laboratory techniques and the reasoning behind some of the methodologies.Your Organic Chemistry text book likely weighs a ton, but this is a very useful little lab resource guide.

Currently on Amazon, the table of contents is not listed. Here are some important topics included in the book: Solvents, Melting/Dissolving, Polarity, Solubility, Phase Diagrams, Melting points, Boiling Points, Liquid Densities, Optical Rotation (Polarimetry), Refractive Index, Elemental Analysis, Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy, NMR, Ultraviolet Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry, Recrystallization, Extraction, Drying the Organic Fractions, Distillation, Sublimation, Chromatography, Thin Layer Chromatography, Column Chromatography, Flash Chromatography, HPLC, SFC, Gas Chromatography and Running a Reaction.

I would highly recommend this student-friendly book to anyone taking an Organic Chemistry lab class. You'll find the book to be helpful in understanding your labs before you conduct them and articulating the reasoning behind laboratory methodologies.

The product came in it's expected condition and was exactly as described on amazon. I was very pleased with the speed in which it arrived as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful text for organic lab
Some understand the theory behind organic chemistry reactions & can do them well on paper but get overwhelmed (like me) in the lab. This book was extremely helpful in the fact that it actually shows you how to do operations in the lab instead of assuming you know what you are doing (which o-chem lab students seldom do).Even better for instructors is that both microscale & standard scale are covered so both can be used. ... Product Description

For students, DIY hobbyists, and science buffs, who can no longer get real chemistry sets, this one-of-a-kind guide explains how to set up and use a home chemistry lab, with step-by-step instructions for conducting experiments in basic chemistry -- not just to make pretty colors and stinky smells, but to learn how to do real lab work:

  • Purify alcohol by distillation
  • Produce hydrogen and oxygen gas by electrolysis
  • Smelt metallic copper from copper ore you make yourself
  • Analyze the makeup of seawater, bone, and other common substances
  • Synthesize oil of wintergreen from aspirin and rayon fiber from paper
  • Perform forensics tests for fingerprints, blood, drugs, and poisons
  • and much more

From the 1930s through the 1970s, chemistry sets were among the most popular Christmas gifts, selling in the millions. But two decades ago, real chemistry sets began to disappear as manufacturers and retailers became concerned about liability. ,em>The Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments steps up to the plate with lessons on how to equip your home chemistry lab, master laboratory skills, and work safely in your lab. The bulk of this book consists of 17 hands-on chapters that include multiple laboratory sessions on the following topics:

  • Separating Mixtures
  • Solubility and Solutions
  • Colligative Properties of Solutions
  • Introduction to Chemical Reactions & Stoichiometry
  • Reduction-Oxidation (Redox) Reactions
  • Acid-Base Chemistry
  • Chemical Kinetics
  • Chemical Equilibrium and Le Chatelier's Principle
  • Gas Chemistry
  • Thermochemistry and Calorimetry
  • Electrochemistry
  • Photochemistry
  • Colloids and Suspensions
  • Qualitative Analysis

5-0 out of 5 stars The best home chemistry book available
I bought this book because of a renewed interest in Chemistry, a subject that I very well on in college, but forgot most of twenty years later. Based on the books' description, I was hoping for a book that was hands on, would cover the basics, and would lead me into more advanced chemistry at some point.

The book did not disappoint - it by far exceeded my expectations. The first five chapters of the book were preparatory - maintaining a lab notebook, safety, what laboratory chemicals and equipment need to be purchased. The author offers cheaper solutions for chemicals or equipment that could be made by oneself or purchased cheaply from a grocery/hardware store. The fifth chapter describes the basics of lab practices - making weight and volume measurements, working with glass tubing, filtration, etc. These important details were very beneficial to me, as I had forgotten all of them.

Chapter six and on were labs, which started from the basics, and became progressively more challenging. The labs are grouped by type (i.e., separating mixtures, solubility, etc). Each lab starts with some background information, but it is typically brief. It is recommended to purchase a chemistry text (although not necessary to do the labs).I bought the recommended book, and found it quite beneficial. The labs are not "child" chemistry, like making elephant toothpaste or baking soda fountains, but are high-school and college level, and beyond.Dangerous chemicals are sometimes used, as is necessary if you want to do real chemistry, but the author uses good judgment and uses safer chemicals where possible.

There are a few experiments where an equation or some important details are not given - it seems that the author is trying to encourage the reader to do some research in a chemistry reference text. There are also questions at the end of each lab, and some of them are quite difficult.

The author maintains a website and forum with errata and supplementary information, and also hosts a Youtube channel that complements the book nicely. For a small subscription cost ($18), there is an addendum that contains an answer guide for the lab questions at the end of each lab, as well as over 30 additional labs.I highly recommend that as well.

This is by far the best book for home chemistry that I have found, and I am thoroughly pleased with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As advertised
This book is exactly as advertised. It has a big section in the front explaining what you need, what you realy don't need, and why. If you want to learn about chemistry and have a home lab. This is a good book to use as a lab work book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
Very useful book for teachers who love and enjoy making experiments not only in a laboratory but also in a theoretical class of chemistry.
The instructions are so0 clear and the ilustrations are so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're gonna need a chemistry equipment supplier.
This book is some solid science! It's more for the home-school crowd than the dilettante who just wants some party tricks. Granted, some of the experiments are pretty darn cool (copper ore comes to mind), but you're not going to be blowing stuff up like on YouTube - hopefully - you're just going to be doing some basic (dangerous) experiments.

This book is NOT for kids under 12 or so to use alone. It involves acids and bases of strengths which can cause burns. Which is half the fun, of course, because the book has a comprehensive safety section.

You will need some lab equipment to get more out of this book than just "hey, you can do that?" You'll need someplace that sells chemicals and someplace that sells beakers, etc. Fortunately, the book tells you how to find these sorts of retailers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just "home" chemistry but THE chemistry of the future
This is a dream come true -- a home chemistry book that is not just a bagatelle, but a full-sized lab manual and reference book (412+ pages). It's a serious book. Sadly, it will also be an historical publication, I predict, the cornerstone of all real chemistry of the future. Why? Because of the Culture of Fear: fear of chemicals, fear of glass, fear of litigation, fear of terrorism, fear of druggies (see Thompson's note about iodine on page 65). Already that culture has resulted in the death of the chemistry set, as noted in his Preface. In the near future, that same culture will result in the death of the chemistry class, too, which can easily be "replaced" by computer simulations and labs equipped with timid fake nonsense. (As much as I admire many applets that simulate reactions, as miniature works of art, I also find them disturbing as harbingers of the chemistry pseudo-lab of the future.) As that transformation continues, the day will come when KMnO4 has been replaced on the lab bench by a lookalike that pretends to do a few limited KMnO4-esque tricks and can optionally be sipped as imitation grape juice. At that point, home chemistry will be the ONLY chemistry, the only game in town. Then millions will thank Robert Thompson for having shown them a way back to the real thing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT for Beginners
Was required to purchase this lab manual for a college General Chemistry course I am taking. If not required I would NEVER have purchased it.This might be good for higher level chemistry courses or a graduate level course but not for a freshman chemistry course.
The experiments are basically presented as SUPPOSEDLY "real world situations/problems" that your team has to find the solution to then report back how you "fixed" the problem. The text gives you very little information and no real guidance on how to tackle the problems presented. It relies entirely too much on the student being intuitive. It presumes a level of knowledge and expereince that the average college freshman or sophomore does not possess.
I definately WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this lab manual if you have a choice.I unfortunately did not.It was definately a waste of my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great lab concept- but our lab instructor cut corners
The author, Dr. Cooper, works in the Chemistry department at my university, so it comes as little surprise that it is used for general chemistry labs there. The labs are much better than ones in high school chemistry. In high school chemistry labs, we were given a value that we had to achieve. If we did not, we lost points depending on how far off we were. This is a problem since error is inevitable in a lab setting, even under the most controlled conditions. The labs in this lab manual focus on how you carry out the experiment. You are not given target results. Instead, you derive a method of solving the given problem (separating a mixture, synthesizing a compound, etc). This method is more similar to what scientists do, and it makes the lab experience more rewarding. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Laboratory Safety for Chemistry Students is uniquely designed to accompany students throughout their four-year undergraduate education and beyond, progressively teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to learn their science and stay safe while working in any lab. This new principles-based approach treats lab safety as a distinct, essential discipline of chemistry, enabling you to instill and sustain a culture of safety among students. As students progress through the text, they’ll learn about laboratory and chemical hazards, about routes of exposure, about ways to manage these hazards, and about handling common laboratory emergencies. Most importantly, they’ll learn that it is very possible to safely use hazardous chemicals in the laboratory by applying safety principles that prevent and minimize exposures.

Continuously Reinforces and Builds Safety Knowledge and Safety Culture

Each of the book’s eight chapters is organized into three tiers of sections, with a variety of topics suited to beginning, intermediate, and advanced course levels. This enables your students to gather relevant safety information as they advance in their lab work. In some cases, individual topics are presented more than once, progressively building knowledge with new information that’s appropriate at different levels.

A Better, Easier Way to Teach and Learn Lab Safety

We all know that safety is of the utmost importance; however, instructors continue to struggle with finding ways to incorporate safety into their curricula. Laboratory Safety for Chemistry Students is the ideal solution:

  • Each section can be treated as a pre-lab assignment, enabling you to easily incorporate lab safety into all your lab courses without building in additional teaching time.
  • Sections begin with a preview, a quote, and a brief description of a laboratory incident that illustrates the importance of the topic.
  • References at the end of each section guide your students to the latest print and web resources.
  • Students will also find “Chemical Connections” that illustrate how chemical principles apply to laboratory safety and “Special Topics” that amplify certain sections by exploring additional, relevant safety issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
This lab manual fits the AP Chemistry curriculum quite well. Each experiment gives some background theory and then goes into detailed description of the procedure. Prelab questions are posed for students to answer before they begin the lab. Data tables are also provided. On a number of the lab topics, two, three or even four separate choices for procedures are presented giving a wide variety of opportunities depending on apparatus available to the school.
On the down side, I can only say that the manual is a bit too wordy and gives maybe too many choices. Compared to other manuals like this one, it is a bit pricey too. ... Read more
