Product Description
PRINCIPLES OF MODERN CHEMISTRY has long been considered the standard book for the course, and this modern text has been significantly revised at the sentence level to make it more student-centered and friendly. Authors David W. Oxtoby and H. P. Gillis are now joined by respected researcher and professor, Alan Campion of the University of Texas-Austin, who brings his expertise on surface physics and chemistry and condensed matter spectroscopy to the sixth edition. PRINCIPLES OF MODERN CHEMISTRY has the well-earned reputation of being the most chemically and mathematically accurate and rigorous book on the market, and this edition is no exception. Generated at the Texas Advanced Computing Center at UT-Austin, new mathematically accurate artistic representations of atomic and molecular orbitals will help you easily derive information visually and see how the orbital equations translate into the orbitals' shapes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry for serious learners
I started the Fifth edition of this book a couple of years ago.I had found a copy of it and of the workbook for it, in a used bookstore and got them cheap.I finished about 300 pages, then let it slide and gave up.I thought, "this is too much math for me.I just want to learn the concepts."I read a couple of easy chemistry texts that were closer to high school level than college, then tried the Brown and LeMay (also bought used and cheap.)

Brown and LeMay have created a very well constructed, tightly honed book that is permeated with understanding of what college students are likely to find difficult. It's an excellent text and maybe a better college textbook than this one, but in the final analysis, I liked the Oxtoby better.I liked the physical chemistry orientation, chemistry is after all about real, physical stuff.I liked the clear appreciation of the achievements of the great chemists who have gone before us, and the history behind our growing understanding.I liked that it's a straight up attempt by some very deep thinkers about chemistry to communicate their understanding of the subject.I liked that it doesn't spoon feed the reader. It tries very hard to build up everything from first principles, but it doesn't cut out the hard stuff to spare the student.I'm inclined to say that it treats the student with considerably more respect than Brown and LeMay do.

I'm not a young man.I'm many decades past college and am studying chemistry purely for my own interest.I have read a fair amount of molecular biology and some biochemistry and I now feel the need for a deeper understanding of the underlying chemistry. For me, looking at this book is a little like standing at the base of a mountain, trying to get up the courage, the will power, and the commitment for the climb. But I just may make another try at it.I'm convinced that the view from the top will be grand.

If I make it to the top I'll write again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent job
Product was just as good as it said on the Web. Also arrive perfectly on time. I Will give it an A+++. Good job and thanks for delivering it in time.

3-0 out of 5 stars dirty with damaged cover
Text arrived covered in dirt with a dented damaged binding - interior seemed fine.Clearly it was poorly stored and no one took the time to clean it off before shipping. But it did arrive in time for class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing
This textbook is supposed to be an introductory textbook. However, from the explanations in the textbook, it seems to be written for students who have already had taken general chemistry. The examples are not helpful for solving the problems and the explanations are very wordy and can even be convoluted at times. The ordering of the material is also very confusing and not helpful for most chemistry students. The only good things is that it has lots of problems and they are useful for learning the material.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Less than Mediocre
While not an absolutely terrible text, Oxtoby certainly was not a great one. This book was used throughout my Physical Chemistry course. I found that the book was quite lacking in conceptual explanations for quantum, at some points using math to explain rather than words. While in an Honors Section in which the focus was to create text, examples, and problems for a textbook on Quantum, this book was useless and internet sources and journal articles were required to provide more conceptual explanations.
I found the chapters on Acid/Base and Titrations to be much more convoluted than they should or ought to have been.
For a wonderful, short, review of Quantum material I would suggest checking out Inorganic Chemistry by Miessler from your library and reading the 2nd Chapter. Having just read it for quick review for one of my classes I found it succinct and feel it would have been a nice summary and general overview before reading the quantum (esp Schrodinger and Particle in a Box) sections in Oxtoby. ... Product Description
KEY BENEFIT: This is the first mainstream general chemistry book to be written with an atoms-first approach, offering the same lucid character and conceptual emphasis that readers have come to expect from these authors. The atoms-first organization progresses from the simplest building blocks to successively more complex concepts, enabling the authors to tell a cohesive story about chemistry that follows an intuitive logic.  This unified thread of ideas helps readers build a better foundation and ultimately gain a deeper understanding of chemical concepts.  Readers can more easily understand the micro-to-macro connections between unobservable atoms and the observable behavior of matter in daily life, and are brought immediately into real chemistry—instead of being forced to first spend time with arithmetic.
Chemistry: Matter and Measurement; The Structure and Stability of Atoms; Periodicity and the Electronic Structure of Atoms; Ionic Bonds and Some Main-Group Chemistry; Covalent Bonds and Molecular Structure; Mass Relationships in Chemical Reactions; Reactions in Aqueous Solution; Thermochemistry: Chemical Energy; Gases: Their Properties and Behavior; Liquids, Solids, and Phase Changes; Solutions and Their Properties; Chemical Kinetics; Chemical Equilibrium; Aqueous Equilibria: Acids and Bases; Applications of Aqueous Equilibria; Thermodynamics: Entropy, Free Energy, and Equilibrium; Electrochemistry; Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Water; The Main- Group Elements;
Transition Elements and Coordination Chemistry; Metals and Solid – State Materials; Organic Chemistry.
MARKET: A comprehensive reference for anyone who needs to learn more about general chemistry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Zero stars should be an option
I bought this book, along with the same publisher's book on Physics, and they are both completely worthless. They are like fake books. Someone spent a lot of time making a clean orderly layout, and then someone else dropped in a bunch of text that doesn't follow a logical sequence or actually teach anything. For example, the first chapter, entitled "Matter and the Periodic Table of Elements" begins with a few paragraphs explaining the Scientific Method--nothing at all about matter or the periodic table. This block of text is immediately followed by a series of "Practice" questions that all relate to matter--but you have not been introduced to any of the concepts yet, so there's no way to know the answers! Every single page evokes the same confused response. These are really weird books. So glad I saved my receipt--I'm bringing them back to the store today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible
I gave up after 2 chapters. It would explain a concept, then ask questions about it. Unfortunately, in explaining the concept, they never explain how to apply it to other situations; or it wouldn't explain it fully enough to answer the practice questions. It assumed you already knew half of what it was explaining. (Ie, they explained atomic mass and the atomic number without explaining that the number of protons is equivalent to the number of electrons. It then asked you to identify the number of protons and neutrons and electrons based on 1 number. I had to flip back and forth from the periodic table to answer and rely on my memory from high school chemistry many years ago to answer the question. There were things like this in every section, and I didn't remember the other concepts from high school at all.) It is therefore confusing, frustrating, and discouraging. I am just grateful I borrowed it from the library instead of wasting money on it myself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Success in Chemistry? Not with this book.
I agree with the last review. The title of this book was very promising yet once I began to use it I realized I would have anything but success with Chemistry. Over all, I found this book extremely confusing. I will exchange it as soon as I can.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book
This book has several typos and does not explain things clearly. It goes back and forth between terms that mean the same thing and gives you numbers in examples without explaining where they came from.It is a poorly put together book and is a waste of money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars books
I always get what I order on time and the product is always in great shape. The book that I purchased was just waht I needed to study with and I use it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book!
Though I haven't tried the Princeton Review book, I do own the Barron's version of AP Prep for Chemistry as well. 5 Steps to a 5 was much more concise than Barron's, which turned out to be ridiculously difficult. This book was great for review and the questions and the rapid review at the end of each chapter were great. The practice tests were also good. If you go through the material thoroughly, you should be fairly well prepared but be ready to use this book to complement your course of study in school, rather than as a self study guide (for that, Barron's is probably better).
All in all, I was really satisfied with my purchase because I ended up with a 5 on the exam!
Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 steps to a 5 ap chem 2010-11
The book came through the mail in perfect condition and it was delivered in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best AP Review Book of the ones I've read
The "Disappointed" name tag refers to a review on another purchase, and that name tag now shows up on all my reviews. So, I'm not disappointed in this purchase at all -- here's the deal: I bought this book because I was so happy with the other 5 steps to a 5 books that I checked out from my local library (biology, physics, and calculus), that even though my library didn't have the one for chemistry, I decided I had to have it. I am currently reviewing it along with the Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam book from the library, and I am VERY happy I bought this book. The material is covered much better, AND I really like the Rapid Review at the end of each chapter. Between the material just plain being better covered, and the Rapid Review at the end of the chapters (and the practice tests of course), this book has made studying for the AP exam a breeze! Very highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great
The book is like new. It is really good and it helps with my chemistry a lot!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible.
On the back of this book:

"The tools that accompany General Chemistry: The Essential Concepts are designed to help you succeed in your general chemistry course. Please visit your bookstore to order these helpful supplements..."

Following this little note are no less than 6 highly recommended websites, workbooks, and OTHER textbooks to use just to understand this one textbook.I think a clearer message would read "Please purchase these materials, and set this book back on the shelf, thanks."

This book is so poorly organized that it makes my head spin.As mentioned by another reviewer, the tools for effectively learning material appear in chapters AFTER said material. This book features page-long discourses on the wonders of quantum physics and how amazing chemistry is, and information that hurtles so far above our heads that it knocks birds out of the sky.
These walls of text have various sample problems interspersed throughout, but I can say that 3 sample problems are not enough to explain the 117 "practice" word problems that follow each chapter. (I counted)

I am glad that our teacher never touched this textbook throughout the semester, but we were required to read it on our own and no one understood it.The class after assigned reading homework, we needed an hour to an hour and a half long lecture on what a few sections in the book meant, put down simple understandable terms.

This book makes seemingly simple concepts way too complicated by throwing in information that only works to confuse the reader.
The only useful items are the tables that appear in the appendix listing heats of formation, standard enthalpies, etc., which have an unusual amount of organization compared to the rest of the book.

If your goal is to learn chemistry, then stay away from this textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book, that is my personal view
This is the book that was assigned to my general chemistry class.Personally I think this is one of the most horrible books ever written, not just chemistry but on any subject.Even though the book says "General Chemistry" there is NO general overview of chemistry whatsoever in the chapters. The only thing that even comes close is the one page "A Note to the Student" thing that says chemistry is percieved as difficult. If the subject is difficult then it is the authors job to make it as simple as possible, which he clearly doesn't.Every chapter I have read gets way too detailed right off the bat.The equations that are given rarely have an explanation of where they came from; they take on a view of, "Here is the equation, now memorize it."They don't try to explain the relationship of the specific subject of chemistry on hand. Also, I think the chapters are out of order.I think some chapters should come before others.Lastly, the book has WAY too much information to be called a general chemistry book.I have been swamped with more information from chemistry than all of my other classes combined.I AM NOT EXAGERATING!Less than half way through the book they try to teach quantum mechanics/physics.It is just a poorly planned book for the coarse.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Chang Text
This text serves its purpose perfectly. It is very well-written and succint.Prof. Chang realizes that there is more to chemistry than solving problems...he does a fantastic job of presenting the essential concepts and then solving many sample problems. There's no way that a chemistry book can show an example of every type of problem; that expectation is unreasonable. This text seeks to teach students chemistry with the examples falling into place.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another case of "too much for too little".
This is a difficult book. Not as difficult as my Phys book, but difficult nonetheless. Perhaps that is the way with chemistry, but it was Chang's job to write a book that could be understood and comprehended. He failed. I resigned myself early in the semester to draw the depth of my chem knowledge from a supplements ("Chemistry", by McMurry and Fay and "Schaum's 3000 solved problems in chemistry"). This trully reminded me of physics in a way I had never before expected of a chemistry class - finding answers to problems out of thin air. The material is overly light and does NOTHING to sort through the jibber jabber in a clear and comprehensive way. Note to Mr. Chang: Sometimes it is not enough to be witty and write well; Sometimes students actually want to learn how to DO THE PROBLEMS YOU THEN ASSIGN TO US AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER! This book is written for people who have another book (or person) to fall back on for a REAL explanation. Raymond (if I may call you that), you should come down to the trenches and see the devastation in your book's wake. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Chem Student Guide Book Review
This book was a bit beat up due to shipping.Shipping was very inadequate.Came by media mail, wrapped in newspaper and a paper envelope. The envelope was completely torn open as well as the "protecting" newspaper. The inside pages are still ok, which is the important part, however very disappointed in the outside condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understandable
Purchased this edition because I am taking a refresher course in Chemistry and didn't want to pay the higher price for the 5th Ed.It is easy to read and has a lot of problems to work and a CD to access for extra help. Not much difference in the 5th Ed.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay, but...
If you are buying this book, bear in mind that it is very, very long. And I completely understand where people say that the text is explained very well. But for me, the text is explained so well that it turned into rambling. The whole basis of the lesson seemed to be lost in the overly done explanation. It would have been easier, or at least in my case, if they just had the pure text that I need to learn, without all of the extra words.

This book is good, depending on what kind of learner you are. If you need a lot of explanation, this book is nice. But if you are someone who gets drained by a lot of text, maybe another book would do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good Chemistry textbook
The authors of this textbook have succeeded in writing a textbook that is clear and usable, while not losing any of the needed rigor. What has impressed me most about this textbook is that the authors keep a personal tone throughout the entire text while not dumbing it down. The world would be better off if all textbooks were written like this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
As a general chemistry instructor I have been gather resources to help me construct the best possible course for my students. This book might work well as a student resource for a college/university that has adopted the accompanying textbook; however, I must use the text selected by the uni. Thus, I will be using this to help me to create my own POGIL exercises for my students. I would recommend this to faculty who are looking for POGIL (process-oriented guided-inquiry learning) resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I expected!
I'm always nervous about ordering things online, but this book came in the condition I had hoped! There was basically no damage to the book (I think one page had writing on it), and it came within a short period of time (a bit more than a week).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Stand alone
First of all - do not buy this book as a stand alone - this book has to go with Chemistry: Structure and Dynamics because this is a workbook. There is almost no stand alone information in this book, it is simply problems to do in order to increase your understanding of what you have learned in that other book.

To the teachers - please don't ask your students to turn in pages from this book - they aren't perforated and would be a pain to get out.

We are using this in my Chem 1 class and basically we do the workbook pages in class and do our actual homework on the online site that you can buy with the book - it's called "Wiley" and allows the teacher to set up online homework and automatically grades it.You can also access the hardcover textbook that way - this website access does NOT come with the version you purchase from Amazon, but you can buy access on your own should you want it.

I'm rather ambivilant to this workbook - sure it appeases my professor, but I don't feel that I'm really getting all that much out of doing the exercises.Get it if required, but look elsewhere if you are trying to teach yourself anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars hard workers
The people who sent me this book worked hard to get me a copy fast. The book had gone out of stock and they tried many vendors to get me the book in excellent brand new condition as soon as I needed it.We emailed each other a couple of times, each encounter being very pleasant.Trust me, there great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry Guided Inquiry
I was Very disappointed after I purchased this book because when I purchased the book with the two days to two weeks shipping I expected to get the book in two weeks but it took TWO weeks to process the order and TWO weeks to get the book. That is a total of FOUR WEEKS. I had to go out and buy the book again and now that I have this one I have to sell it. ... Read more
