5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent How-to book on Advanced Tile Making
This book contains excellent how-to information on everything from screen printing onto tiles, to mold-making, to decorating possibilities like stenciling, painting, and working with slips.

The finished samples shownare not as inspirational as, say, Frank Giorgini's "HandmadeTiles" samples, but they show the possible results of the techniquesoutlined in the book and are nice.

I thought this book offered a large variety of flower pots. It also offered a larger variety of other pieces but in a smaller quantity. I would not have purchased this book if I have had a chance to review it first. It is fine for a first time collector. I was looking more for a Hull book with wall pockets and larger pieces.

4-0 out of 5 stars History of Deruta Pottery
I puchased this book for my wife who brought home some pottery when she was in Umbria. I was hoping for a book that had a lot of pictures of the different kinds of Deruta pottery. This book was a history of the pottery from 1200-present. Although it was not what I thought, it was still very informative and enjoyable. I would recommend to anyone who wants to find out the history of this beautiful Italian pottery

This is a beautiful book! I highly recommend it to anyone enchanted by Italian majolica and interested in it's history. After I read it, I thought I'd leave it on my coffee table for easy reference...but so many people at work have asked to borrow it! Even as I rode the train to work with the book in my lap, people next to me couldn't resist staring at the pictures and commenting on its beauty.

In the complex and varied world of Islamic art ceramics play an important role. Medieval Persian ceramics, in particular, were extraordinary for their technical invention and imaginative, refined iconography achieving artistic results that would be difficult to surpass in the art of pottery. Compared with early Islamic art, works of art from medieval times make much greater use of figural decoration and forms.Alongside celebrated examples from some of the world's most prestigious museum collections, this volume includes a series of hitherto unseen works. The impressive and technically sophisticated pieces include plates, bowls, ewers, jugs, jars, beakers, and spouted and shaped vessels. 5-0 out of 5 stars Sculptors in other media will be inspired
As a sculpture student who has worked primarily in wood and plaster, I wasn't interested in this book as much for technique as for a photo gallery of contemporary sculpture.I was blown away.I will be taking ceramics in the future, and now I can hardly wait to get my hands on clay; I was fascinated by the different styles possible in this medium. Those coming from a ceramics background will have an entirely different appreciation for this book (I don't know anything about the techniques introduced, but the author made them seem very 'do-able').At any rate, it's a wonderful book to peruse, and stimulate that creative muse.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well rounded guide to tilemaking
First just let me say that this book doesn't deserve any of the less than four stars reviews. You'll notice that if you read said reviews they ALL say that the reason for fewer stars is a lack of step by step projects. I'll never get why some people can't understand that not every art book falls into that one narrow category.

This book teaches techniques, and thus is FAR more useful than ANY book which only teaches projects. Not that I have anything against project-centric books--they are a great stepping stone for the beginner--but tilemaking goes a bit beyond a casual hobby in the setup required. If you get a project book for handmade tiles then you're wasting your money.

The instruction in this book is very well laid out and is very clear. There are tons of pictures of steps, tools, and so on, so it will work for both instruction based and visual based learners. It covers the whole range of tilemaking, from the basic supplies to different techniques to how to make various tools.

It also features dozens of images of finished works, from traditional inlaid slip floors to the heavily cow themed bathroom to three dimensional sculptures of tiled sofas. The number and variety of these examples makes for great inspiration material.

All in all, if you're planning to do anything in the realm of handmade tiles this is the place to start.

Product Description
Large scale ceramics demand a number of considerations that do not concern most ceramists: kiln size, assembling, weatherproofing and installation are some of the things that must be taken into account. Large-scale Ceramics discusses these issues as well as giving advice on obtaining and handling commissions.

Well-illustrated with images depicting large scale works from many parts of the world and the process of their construction, it is written in a lively and entertaining style suitable for anyone with an interest in ceramics and includes examples of the authors' work over a 20 year period.

Robison states "My own fascination with large scale probably stems from making sculptures in other materials and the experience of creating works intended for Michigan gardens (those occasionally vast spaces known as front or backyards). Using wood or metal structures, it was relatively easy to create sculptures on a scale to dwarf the onlooker. Under such circumstances I think it has always been important to me that pieces should be large enough to be noticed, even at a distance, and it was even better if they could command attention through a physical presence which could not be ignored."
Contents
Chapter 1. General making methods covers coil and pinch, using the wheel, avoiding cracks, slabware, using molds, bronze and other casting methods, and mixed media.

Chapter 2. Murals and relief sculptures discusses the use of tiles and bricks, studio practices, special considerations for exterior and interior installations, and Robison's own approach to design and working with clay.

Chapter 3. Large on-site works considers the in situ aspect of large-scale sculpture of working directly on the ground and firing in place or creating sculptures as kilns.

Chapter 4. Using a factory details the special considerations for anyone fortunate enough to be able to work in a factory setting such as a pipe works, tile or brick works, or a slipcast plant.

Chapter 5. Group approaches with community and educational potential provides guidelines for events and exercises and group projects.

Chapter 6. Commissions are important for working in large scale because you soon run out of room for large pieces around the house. Robison discusses how to get started with finding commissions and how to avoid pitfalls and be successful.

Chapter 7. Technical notes rounds out the book with a discussion of studio considerations, clay bodies, additions to clay, achieving color and texture, and other points to consider.

Soda glazing was, for many years, the neglected cousin of salt glazing. As pollution laws have become stricter, however, more potters have turned to soda and, to their delight, found not only the traditional orange peel surface but also a subtle palette of colors that have made them sit up and take notice.

In this book Ruthanne Tudball discusses the history of and techniques involved in soda glazing. She includes body and slip recipes, kiln designs, and firing methods specifically developed for soda glazing. She illustrates her text with the work of an international group of artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasticbook on Vapor Glazing
Soda Glazing by Ruthanne Tudball is a must-have if you are a potter or clay artist considering the move to vapor glazing, or would like more information on the process, the kilns and the clays.

*Descriptive text about the soda glazing process
*Clear and concise kiln diagrams
*Profiles of potters' firing methods

While this book assumes that you, as one who works with clay, have a rudimentary knowledge of the making and firing process, it does offer a range of basic to advanced information.

After being entranced by an article about Ruthanne in Ceramics Monthly, I bought the book and literally read it cover to cover, several times. I was going through an "I hate to glaze" phase, and thought soda glazing was my answer.

From the 1930s to the 1960s numerous potteries in Southern California turned out some of the finest figural pottery ever made in America. For decades these beautiful wares lingered in obscurity, but now they have rocketed to the forefront of collectibility. They are illustrated here with over 800 color photographs covering more than 75 companies. Among them are companies such as Brayton Laguna, Kay Finch and Hedi Scoop. Lesser known companies like DeLee Art, Robert Simmons, and Walker-Renaker are represented too. Information about the potteries, tips for collectors, and a realistic price guide make this an indispensable book for collectors. ... Read more

Over 1,900 companies with over 8,000 marks, logos, and symbols divided equally among the old folk potters, studio potters, dinnerware manufacturers, distributors, and decoratorsfill this massive hardbound encyclopedia. No values. REVIEW: This thick hardcover book is packed with text and illustrations, the sheer measure of which admittedly took the author nearly a quarter century to research and compile. The book is an indispensable aid for properly identifying pottery, porcelain, and clay pieces. The various manufacturer listings contain paragraphs outlining the history of each company as well as interesting "insider" information. Both the novice and veteran collector can ID their merchandise quickly and easily. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars US Marks on Pottery, Porcelain and Clay
I gave it to my son. He's an amateur collector. He's enjoying it very much.

3-0 out of 5 stars U S Pottery Marks Book
I bought this book in hopes of using it for reference. It's not what I was looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for pottery identification practically everywhere in the US
I find this to be among the very best books on American backstamps or marks for ware made just about everywhere in the U. S.It was published in the 1980s; some things are not accurate any more including references to companies that have since gone out of business or changed hands. I agree with another reviewer who wished for a more thorough index.I would also add a wish for an updated version with photographs rather than drawings.

While Lehner's Encyclopedia is great for most American pottery, if researching ware made in the nation's Pottery Capital (the East Liverpool area) do turn instead to the Gates & Ormerod book "The East Liverpool Ohio Pottery District Identification of Manufacturers and Marks".Assume that the Gates & Ormerod book is best when it comes to East Liverpudlian ware.Lehner and Gates/Ormerod both wrote unfailingly useful reference books.

If only interested in Harker, the most thorough book on that subject is the book by William and Donna Gray. They discovered over a hundred additional marks which were not included in either the Gates & Ormerod or Lehner books (which were published decades earlier).

Otherwise the Lehner book is very useful, and I hope it stays in print!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The book arrived on time and the condition was as described (new). The secondary packaging could use improvement as the box had broken and opened at the bottom. The primary packaging was excellent and prevented the book from damage when the box broke.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Anyone Dealing in Collectible Ceramics
This book is a definite 'must have' for anyone dealing in or buying collectible ceramics. I have just started selling glasswares and have come across a lot of different pottery marks. Without a reference book, you cannot determine an items' real worth.
This book has thousands of different marks and artists' marks! This book is by my side when trying to determine the ceramic items' origin and age. ... Read more

Product Description
The 1906 earthquake in San Francisco triggered not only a devastating three-day fire, but also a tuberculosis epidemic, a result of the ash- and dust-filled air. Working women were disproportionately afflicted with the disease. Fortunately, many of them regained their health---and cultivated new artistic skills---at a unique treatment center across the Golden Gate.

The Arequipa Sanatorium, located in rural Marin County, was founded in 1911 by Dr. Philip King Brown. Influenced by the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement, he sought to provide his working-class female patients not only with the medical care and rest that they needed, but also with the opportunity to engage in a creative pursuit that was both therapeutic and marketable. Brown settled upon pottery.

Through vintage photographs, technical illustrations, and beautiful full-color reproductions, Fired by Ideals: Arequipa Pottery and the Arts and Crafts Movement tells the story of this progressive institution and analyzes the distinctive pottery created there. With their simple charm and strong ties to the natural environment, Arequipa wares remain treasured examples of American art pottery and the Arts and Crafts era. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Arts & Crafts Book
I really enjoyed this book. I am a huge Arts & Crafts fan, and this was well-researched and both esoteric and interesting to those of us who love this art form

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with thoughtful and meaningful wares
Collaboratively presented by Suzanne Raizerman (Imogene Gieling Curator of Crafts and Decorative Arts, Oakland Museum, California), Lynn Downey (History, Levi Strauss and Company); and John Taki (California College of Arts and Crafts and President, Leslie Ceramic Supply Company, Berkeley, California) Fired By Ideals: Arequipa Pottery And The Arts & Crafts Movement is a truly impressive, 136 page artbook showcasing a unique selection of historical ceramic pottery sculpture. In 1911, after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco triggered a tuberculosis epidemic, a special treatment center called the Arequipa Sanatorium was founded for working women afflicted by the disease. Pottery became daily practice, both as an outlet for creativity/healing and to create marketable wares. The most amazing samples of this fine pottery are displayed in full color in Fired By Ideals, along with descriptive captions and a narrated history of the Sanatorium that created them. A fascinating catalogue filled with thoughtful and meaningful wares, Fired By Ideals is a unique and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library arts and crafts reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars With vintage photos and color reproductions

"Ceramics in America" is a wonderful publication. For the first volume of this journal, it is very well put together. The journal has lots of information on ceramics made and used in America. It is very helpful to those who are not very familiar with American ceramics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A finely crafted volume
This book is a must-have for ceramics enthusuasts!Having worked with historic ceramics for several years, I was familiar with many of the authors selected to write for the first "Ceramics in America" monograph. As much as I eagerly anticipated the work, I was not prepared for the level of excellence which has been achieved here. This volume contains cutting-edge ceramics research, illustrated with the latest in pottery technology and documentary history of the field. I was particularly impressed with two articles highlighting pottery techniques: the submission by Don Carpentier and Jonathan Rickard on annular or "dipt" wares, and also the work of team Michelle Erickson/Rob Hunter, who demonstrate early English slipwares production. This is yet another triumph for the Chipstone Foundation, who has successfully sponsored Luke Beckerdite's "American Furniture" series for years. This book is very highly recommended for archaeologists, collectors, curators, and other material culture specialists. ...
