Product Description

Lavishly illustrated with nearly 400 color images, Painting the Maya Universe is the most thorough study and brilliant display of Classic Maya ceramic painting yet published. Building on twenty years of research and debate, Dorie Reents-Budet and her collaborators Joseph W. Ball, Ronald L. Bishop, Virginia M. Fields, and Barbara MacLeod bring together many perspectives, including the art historical, archaeological, epigraphical, and ethnohistorical, to examine one of the world’s great but overlooked painting traditions. With an emphasis on sixth- to eighth-century pottery featuring both pictorial and hieroglyphic imagery, Painting the Maya Universe presents an extraordinary exploration of the cultural roles and meanings of these Guatemalan, Belizean, and Mexican elite painted ceramics. Maya pottery is discussed both in aesthetic terms and for the important information it reveals about Maya society, artistry, politics, history, religion, and ritual. The range of ceramic painting styles developed during this period is also presented and defined in detail.
Painting the Maya Universe is the first publication to present a definitive translation of the hieroglyphic texts painted on these objects. With many glyphs deciphered here for the first time, this analysis reveals much about how these vessels were perceived and used by the Maya, their owners’ names, and, in several cases, the names of the artists who created them. This information is combined with archaeological and other data, including nuclear chemical analyses, to correlate painting styles with specific Maya sites.
Published in conjunction with Duke University Museum of Art and an exhibition touring the United States, Painting the Maya Universe presents an astonishing visual record as well as a monumental scholarly achievement. With photographs by Justin Kerr, the foremost photographer of pre-Columbian art, it includes over 90 unique full-color rollout photographs, each showing the entire surface of an object in a single frame. The book also addresses the questions and controversy regarding the loss of information that occurs when objects are removed from their archaeological context to become part of public and private collections.
Painting the Maya Universe will energize discussion of Maya pottery, hieroglyphic texts, and iconography. Its photographs, a lasting resource on this great painting tradition, will stimulate and delight the eye. It is a breakthrough in art history and Latin American scholarship that will enrich general readers and scholars alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force of Mayan Iconography
As anyone who owns books on the ancient Maya will probably attest, they have a habit of becoming out of date rather rapidly; yesterday's Copan is today's Xukpi and yesterday's King 18-Rabbit is today's Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good thing. Unlike the vast body of scholarship that Egyptologists can only hope to add a sentence to here or a footnote to there, Mayanists are faced with a field where every turn of the spade yields material that is likely to keep them busy for decades. That is the exciting thing about Mayan studies; every year sees yet more exciting discoveries by both "dirt" archeologists and by "armchair" or more correctly "keyboard" scholars. Every new book on the Maya is welcome and if they are as well written and lavishly illustrated as this one, they are doubly welcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hundreds of brilliant color plates and expert essays.
I've read much of what has been written about Mayan ceramics and can say with confidence that this is the best book on the subject ever written. The essays in it, by top professionals, discuss the forms and functions of theceramics, the meaning of their calligraphy, their basic themes and theplaces particular styles of ceramics come from. Indeed, if you read itcarefully and more than once, you too will be able to decipher theprincipal inscriptions even on pots that are not in the book. There arehundreds of full-color photographs of Mayan ceramic vases and plates inthis book. These vases are decorated with pictures of formed the greatestPre-Columbian civilization. These ceramics depict Mayan textile design,Mayan hair-dressing,Mayan head-dresses, Mayan ceramics (within theceramic paintings), Mayan concepts of design and of the other worlds belowthis one. From them we learn of Mayan myth,Mayan ritual, Mayan daily life, and Mayan art. Leaving aside the great monumental art of sculpture andstucco that adorned major structures, leaving aside the structuresthemselves, and giving credit for a host of varieties of artisticrepresentations ranging from the Tsimshian to the Moche... I think it is anabsolute fact that the art that appears on Mayan ceramics is the best thatAmerica ever created prior to Columbus and arguably the best... period. This book discusses, describes, depicts and defends that incredibleartistic legacy better than any other ever did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This handsome book covers a wide range of Maya ceramic imagery, and is filled with stunning photographs. The imagery is also broken down by catagory, and is supplimented with explations of glyphs. The accessible text that explores the mythology, culture, iconography, and hieroglyphics on and related to the ceramics. The information is thorough without being overly specialized. ... Product Description
Completely different from any other book of marks ever published, this dictionary provides the quickest way to identify American, English, and European porcelain. Once a piece is identified, research and experience (the color, texture, weight, and general "feel") tell the rest of the story.

The unique index of 5,000 marks, listed by prominent features and with a complete cross-reference, shows at a glance (a) geographical location of mark, (b) factory or family name of manufacturer, (c) type of ware, (d) method of producing the mark on the object, (e) color of the mark, and (f) date when the mark was used.

The authors have included a foreword, bibliography, index of manufacturers, and a reliable guide to the often misunderstood marks of Delft, Sevres, and England 1842-1883.

Ralph and Terry Kovel, hailed as America's antiques experts, have authored more than 70 books. They write a nationally syndicated newspaper column, a monthly column in House Beautiful, and a subscription-only national newsletter, Kovels on Antiques & Collectibles.

You may be the owner of a valuable piece of porcelain or pottery, but the cryptic symbol on the underside of the piece may be your only clue to its value. Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks will help you identify your pieces.

Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks provides the quickest and easiest way for professional and amateur collectors to identify more than 3,500 American, European, and Oriental marks. The perfect companion to the Kovels' original best-seller, Kovels' Dictionary of Marks-Pottery and Porcelain (still in print after more than 42 years and 41 printings), Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks is the most comprehensive reference for nineteenth- and twentieth-century marks. (The original dictionary remains the definitive authority on seventeenth-, eighteenth-, and nineteenth-century marks.) Together, the two volumes are an indispensable guide to porcelain and pottery marks of the last four centuries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
great for anyone with an odd collection of antique porcelain trying to deciper the makers mark. Easy to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.
Exactly what I was expecting. A bit difficult to understand at first, but once you understand the layout it really makes it easy to use for reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kovels' Dictionary of Marks -- Pottery And Porcelain : 1650 to 1850 (Kovel's Dictionary of Marks)
Overall it is helpful. I am really just getting into this, so it is great to have something I can refer to to get an idea of where the item I have comes from.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good resource for the collector
As with the Kovels other books, this reference is very exhaustive and complete. There are, perhaps, some mistakes, but given the volume of information here that is to be expected. I find I reach for this book first when I'm trying to identify a piece of this age group, and usually findwhat I'm looking for here. Easy to travel with, from antique shop toauction. A good buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes
Rather coplete book but-alas-full of mistakes in entries concerning German and Austrian porcelain.Take for example the Meissen porcelain:the authors put together in one large pile Meissen proper,Thiemefactory,Fr.Hirsch,Helena Wolfsohn and other factories, though these areabsolutely different things. The authors should make a bit of researchbefore starting the project:What amazes me is that this is the 46th editionof the book and nobody ever corrected those mistakes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Super great book!
I borrowed this book from a ceramic teacher of mine just to look through. It is such an awesome book with so much information that I wanted a copy of my own.It shows you how to make some really beautiful shaped cups.It shows you that you can make some really beautiful handbuilt tableware.I wanted to get started on my own tableware immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Handbuilding Book
This is a terrific book with really detailed instructions for building one-of-a-kind pottery.I believe that the ideas generated by the author, along with her instructions will help any beginning potter to put some finesse into their pottery. What it does for someone like me, a potter with 16 years experience, is to give me a little dose of inspiration since I know most of the techniques. However, don't pick up this book and expect to become an expert handbuilding potter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for potters
This a a great resource for the functional potter or ceramic artists. Full of images and inspiration, as well as detailed inspructions of many items. A must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handbuilt pottery book
Good pottery book for hand building. Some interesting and workable ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sparked new ideas for my own work
The technical information in this book is excellent:well presented, illustrated and explained. While I agree with the other reviewer that most of the actual projects shown are not fitting with my taste, the ideas and techniques presented have proven helpful to me.I also found myself wishing that the cover art was included in the how-to projects (which it is not).My only other criticism is that darting is not covered, but great examples of it are, so the reader never gets the explanation of how such forms are achieved.

Overall, this is one of the best technique books I've come across.I would recommend it, especially for the hobby or beginning potter. If you have a formal education in the ceramic arts you will know most of these tips already and find the suggested projects lacking in sophistication. It may however spark some new ideas for your own work. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
Looks like they took the larger Warman's (2004)(which I have and like a little) and republished much of the same info in a smaller version.I was expecting a significant addition of material. If you need Roseville books:Bassett's Introducing (2001), Bassett's Understanding (2002), Bassett's Prices (2005), Jack and Nancy Bomm - Roseville in all its Splendor (2004).Bassett's prices are close to reality. The Warman's (2004) book has some prices that are low and some that are right on.Many of Huxford's (2001) prices seem to be way too high.If you get the 3 Bassett books and the Bomm book, you have a good core set to use.

UPDATE: The New MOLLRING book, "Roseville Pottery" 11th Ed., copyright 2006, is really good for collectors. Cons: Black and White Pictures. Pros: Updated Prices, concise reference, very comprehensive. A must have book for Roseville collectors. Dave.

Product Description
In 1974 Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery was published to accompany an exhibit at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology; twenty years later there are some 80,000 copies in print. Like Seven Families, this updated and greatly enlarged version by Rick Dillingham, who curated the original exhibition, includes portraits of the potters, color photographs of their work, and a statement by each potter about the work of his or her family. In addition to the original seven--the Chino and Lewis families (Acoma Pueblo), the Nampeyos (Hopi), the Gutierrez and Tafoya families (Santa Clara), and the Gonzales and Martinez families (San Ildefonso)--the author has added the Chapellas and the Navasies (Hopi-Tewa), the Chavarrias (Santa Clara), the Herrera family (Cochiti), the Medina family (Zia), and the Tenorio-Pacheco and the Melchor families (Santo Domingo).

Because the craft of pottery is handed down from generation to generation among the Pueblo Indians, this extended look at multiple generations provides a fascinating and personal glimpse into how the craft has developed. Also evident are the differences of opinion among the artists about the future of Pueblo pottery and the importance of following tradition.

A new generation of potters has come of age since the publication of Seven Families. The addition of their talents, along with an ever-growing interest in Native American pottery, make this book a welcome addition to the literature on the Southwest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery
This is a terrific book if you are interested in the timeless pottery of the southwest area. The pictures are very good with lots of information. It is an excellent resource connecting artists and styles. I was able to find pottery that I had purchased years ago that the style is the same.I found a used book in excellent condition on Amazon at a reduced price. My only wish is that it would be a hard cover book instead of a paperback because I will wear it out looking at it.Of course it might cause you to want more pottery pieces. And thats not all bad!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Pictures
Others have already talked about the range of pottery that is detailed in this beautiful book. What stands out for me is the incredible quality of the pictures and the 5 stars reflect that.I'm pretty finicky when it comes to the way art is presented in picture books. The plates in this book are outstanding, both in terms of the color and the size. Some books will show multiple pictures on a single page, with images that are too small to let you to fully appreciate the pieces that are being displayed. No worries about that here. It's strictly one picture per page with beautiful photographs throughout. If you appreciate Pueblo pottery, you will be WOWed by the way it's represented here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another art gem
For anyone interested in Native American pottery, this volume is a must-have.

We are lucky enough to have met Florence Chavarria Browning of the Santa Clara pueblo, and to have purchased one of her spectacular black pots.

These particular pots are not glazed, but fired specially to create the pure, colt black of onyx, darker than coal, and softly glowing. Very few artists have skill enough to burn these amazing pots, and this book, introduces readers to the best of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars 14 families of pueblo pottery
almost every piece of pottery I have is represented in the book!

Product Description
Roseville pottery is introduced, explained, examined, and surveyed in this beautiful, sweeping guide. This revised and expanded edition includes new research on Roseville shape numbers and terminology, as published in Bassett's Roseville Prices. Over 860 color photographs illustrate the many artistic products created by the Roseville Pottery Company during its long life from 1890 to 1954. Arranged alphabetically, each line and its most typical variations are presented, and each has been meticulously researched and dated. The various ware types produced for each line are enumerated. Previously unknown Roseville products are documented--most notably Early Velmoss. Also included in the text are discussions of experimental and trial glaze pieces, a glaze and shape identification guide, a timeline of Roseville products, and an examination of the company's factory marks and artist signatures. Guidelines for building a collection and tips on collector's etiquette round out the presentation. Values are provided for all of the items displayed. Finally, a selected bibliography and an index are included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Present for the Roseville Collector
I bought this book to give to my husband for Christmas. This will be the book he takes with him when we hit the antique and flea markets. There are no pictues, so you have to know what you are looking for, but it gives the buyer a general idea of how these collectibles are priced. The one failing this book has is the same failing almost all price guides have: The prices are usually for high end antique shops. Therefore, the prices in this book are usually higher than the ones we see here in our part of the country.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost good enough
This book is a great research tool but we would have appreciated more photos and a more comprehensive selection of values by piece.

Product Description
The accepted standard for understanding glazes, this book explores glaze and color making in a hands-on way that follows the empirical understanding used for thousands of years. Hopper provides an impressive description of his extensive research into glaze, color, texture, and surface enrichment. It is the perfect practical complement to any glaze theory or process of calculation, including glaze calculation software programs.

The Ceramic Spectrum is mainly a story of personal discovery over a 45-year period, of playing with materials and fire and observing their interaction, of looking at colors and textures in nature and visualizing how to achieve them with ceramic materials, of looking at hundreds of thousands of glaze and color tests, always looking for the elusive or the unknown and sometimes being granted the unimaginable. Long-term interests in geology and ceramic history have also fueled this passion to understand and use elements of the earth to create objects of both usefulness and contemplation. Hopper helps eliminate confusion for others through his personal experiences and observations with this medium. Pottery making is a continuum where one generation has learned from previous generations, some as a family pursuit and some through the inevitable seduction of material and process.

The primary intent of The Ceramic Spectrum is not as recipe book, but to demystify an extremely complex subject. Although it has over 500 recipes, all of which work perfectly well and have been widely tested, they are given to suggest parameters in which these glazes develop, to show some of the variables that control both surface and color. This book aims to make available to the student of ceramics whether beginner, advanced, or professional an approach to the study of ceramic glaze and color development which does not rely on the use of published formulas, recipes or the mathematics of ceramic glaze calculation.

Glaze making is a process of creative thought. It goes back to the empirical methods, through intuition and observation of materials and fire, in use for nearly 5,000 years before the understanding of glaze formulation by mathematical equation and molecular weight of chemicals.

The aim of this book is to encourage personal curiosity and exploration of materials for glaze and color, so that anyone can develop their own glazes, without pain or anguish, and with a very exciting learning experience.

The text is perfect as a course outline for either the individual or the group, where shared experiences tend to enhance and speed up the learning process. It should also be usable as a research tool for the understanding and development of colors, which may have previously seemed beyond reach.

"For those who feel intimidated by chemical/mathematical formulation, it is my hopethat in the exploration of this book it will be possible for the reader to finda new direction in the search for an individual idiom" Robin Hopper ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference Book for Collectors of all Types of Porcelain
This amazing fourth edition is truly the Bible of the ceramics field. A fantastic resource for dealers and collectors alike. Al and Susan Bagdades' outdid themselves when they put this wonderful guide together. It is perfect for novice collectors or established dealers. This is an expanded edition of their classic reference with 10,000 new listings, 600 black and white photos, and 16 [ages of color photos. Plus there are new sections on Cottageware, Pilkington, Royal Winton, Ruskin, and Wade. Sadly, Susan passed away in 2003, while working with Al on this book. Despite his loss, Al persevered and completed this edition as a tribute to his beloved wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars warman's english and continental pottery and porcelain
This is a great book!A must have!!All the books by authors Susan and Al Bagdade are excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful reference guide
Warman's guide has been a real asset in researching porcelains. As a novice, my greatest challenge has been in identifying the origins of my pieces. The Warman's guide has been invaluable in identifying pieces and approximating dates, as the book illustrates each known signature/stamp, and often includes the dates associated with the signatures. The various B&W photos of plates, figures, etc., were only minimally helpful (you can only get so much info from small B&W pictures) but the real value for me has been in Warman's listing of manufacture marks. Warman's Porcelain is a good launching point for identifying unknown porcelain. (It is an encyclopedia). If you have an older porcelain and are curious to know more about it, its manufacturer (and value) Worman's is a good start for preliminary information. My only suggestion would be to have a separate index by manufacturer marks (if you don't know the maker associated w/your porcelain's signature, expect to spend some time scanning through this volume to find the particular illustration!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book for Porcelain Collectors Everywhere!
This is an excellent reference book!It is in black and white with some pictures and a decent price list. The best thing about this book is the broad range of porcelain manufacturers listed and the histories, otherreferences and collecting hints.Items are listed with good descriptionsand price list.It also contains marks. It lists individual manufacturersand also gives histories on manufactureing areas.Altogether a very goodbook and valuable to porcelain collectors! ... Product Description
Vietnamese potters combined their own native genius withelements derived from neighboring cultures, including Cambodia,Champa, India, and especially China. Yet their decorative motifs, glaze types, production methods, and perhaps even attitudes towardpotting differed distinctly from those of China. Using the excellentclay of the Red River valley--smooth, homogeneous, gray-white--theycreated the most sophisticated ceramic tradition of SoutheastAsia. The most definitive study on Vietnamese ceramics to date, thisvolume is the collaborative effort of experts from around the world, including Vietnam, Japan, England, France, and the United States. Theydiscuss the history and development of Vietnamese ceramics, kiln sitesdiscovered in Vietnam, and technical questions. John Guy (Victoria &Albert Museum, London) contributes essays on Vietnamese ceramics andcultural identity, and Vietnamese Ceramics in internationaltrade. John Stevenson (Seattle Art Museum) explains the historicalcontext and examines the ivory-glazed wares of the Ly and Trandynasties. Louise Cort (Smithsonian Institution) analyzes Vietnameseceramics in Japanese contexts, while Regina Krahl (British Museum)shares her expertise on Vietnamese blue-and-white and polychrometraditions. Asako Morimoto (Fukuoka Museum) describes the kilns ofnorthern Vietnam. The book contains additional essays by PhilippeTruong of the Louvre, Trian Nguyen of UC Berkeley, and Peter Lam ofthe Chinese University of Hong Kong. 4-0 out of 5 stars This book expanded my perception of Vietnamese Ceramics
I found this book both enjoyable and disconcerting. As a modest collector of Vietnamese blue and white, mostly acquired recently in Indonesia and the Philippines, I found a great deal of information and alarge number of illustrations which helped me with dating and provenance. There are some terrific illustrations of early pieces which I can onlydream of finding. Many of the illustrations of later blue and white,(equally unobtainable and unseen in the shops of Kuta or Manila), were newto me and show a convergence to more conventional Chinese forms of design. (I personally find the earlier Vietnamese pieces so full of vigour andsimplicity missing in most Ming pieces).

To make things worse, the bookopened a whole new realm of marvelous earlier (mostly) monochrome pieceswhich has sent me out on a new search.

You may gather that I enjoyed ittremendously, I know of no other book which covers the subject in suchdetail. My wife will hate it because my collecting will take on a morevigorous life as a result of reading it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Pottery, Ceramics
Excellent book on many California Potteries. There are many more Pottery companies to be written about but for vintage pottery, this is the best I have seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars California Pottery
This book provides a nice overview of California pottery.Very good examples of the individual styles of the pottery makers of the 1930 - 1960. One major flaw - no Vernon wear is listed. I would also highly recommend the book, California Pottery second edition, by this same author, for an even more complete listing of CA pottery and the histories of the various pottery makers during their heyday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Met expectations and exceeded them!
I had high hopes for this book and was not dissapointed.Clear information, great pictures and love the catagorizing by the years!Am looking forward to more books by Jack Chipman

2-0 out of 5 stars Much Anticipated, Sadly Disappointed!
We were really looking forward to the release of this book, only to be sadly disappointed!Instead of categorizing the items pictured by the companies who produced them, they are set up by the production year, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, etc! There is an index in the back but it's rather confusing and who wants to spend time flipping back and forth!Definitely NOT a user friendly book.I suppose you have to take different areas of the country into consideration but I've found the prices are totally unrealistic.Makes me wonder if Mr. Chipman is wanting to sell his collection! On the plus side, the pictures are good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "find" for the ceramics enthusiast
"California Pottery Scrapbook" is a highly informative and well researched book.I loved seeing the names of Kay Finch and Gladding McBean who were well known in the Forties, andI was especially excited to see Beth Barton's works documented.Barton was one of the foremost artists in Southern California in the Forties. I own several treasured examples of her work, and I can say it is great fun to search for and find your favorite artist in the Scrapbook. The search is facilitated by the book's organizing the artist's works by decades from the 30's to the 60's and beyond. The photos and general quality of the book are first rate.It is a beautiful and valuable book, and anyone should be proud to have it on their coffee table. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars more(cow) bowl
I'm a long way from a Bauer expert (I have 4 bowls and a pitcher), so this is a good introduction. Nevertheless, the book concentrated on "art" items rather than everyday kitchen and table items which one is more likely to see in antique shops. More emphasis on bowls might answer questions I have, such as why none of my bowls have the inside rims, or the date of that style. The book is a bit old so prices may be out of date, but provide a ballpark number for the non-pro.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prices represent the time B.M. (Before Martha Stewart)
Mr. Chipman did a fantastic job at giving collectors an extensive history and overview of Bauer Pottery; its founders, key managers and workers and customer base. The book is an invaluable reference tool, especially for anyone who does not reside in an area where Bauer isn't "common".One must remember though, that this book was published before Martha Stewart featured the pottery in one of her magazine issues, thereby giving rise to the current popularity and scarcity of ringware. Therefore the prices, though out of date, were at one time quite accurate...new collectors can always dream of finding that rare piece priced by the standards of this text...Some of us were lucky enough to be collecting when the prices were even less than those listed here. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Collector's Guide to Bauer Pottery
Great photo shots of the various Bauer products.Highly useful to a novice collector interested in the history and examples of Bauer pottery.Enjoyable as a good read as well as a great guide for collecting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Collector's Guide to Bauer Pottery
This book is wonderful.I found everything I needed to know.Jack Chipman has done a great job - the text is clear and informative and the photos are especially good as they clearly show the important details . This will have a special spot in my book shelf....

5-0 out of 5 stars INVALUABLE
I started collecting Bauer Ringwear by accident with a totally random visit to a wonderful shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles called Buddy's Art Pottery.Whenever I visited Hollywood, I knew that Buddy would help me choose that single, special, almost-affordable piece of Ringwear and spend lots of his time sharing his knowledge, as if I were a major purchaser.Buddy has, sadly, passed away and his shop is a thing of the past.Living in New York as I do, Bauer is not a common collectible. In fact, most antique dealers do not even know the name and try to steer me to their collection of Fiestaware.

I am today a more informed buyer and that is mainly due to the writings of Jack Chipman. This Encyclopedia, specifically, has so many gorgeous photographs and such a thorough history of Bauer and its place in California pottery that I feel it is invaluable.

It is obviously impossible for any writer/collector to price correctly since there are publishing deadlines that must be met and prices, as we all know, change on a daily basis from place to place. But Chipman's price guide is a great "jumping off place."As I cruise Ebay looking for a Bauer bargain, I often think of Buddy and I always consult Chipman.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ... 5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
This book is comparable to Val Cushing's handbook. To be perfectly honest I found "the ceramic process" to be very clear and concise in its descriptions, more so than VC's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ceramic Process
This is not about the book, but about Amazon. Initially, the book arrived printed upside down in the binding and
with it cut badly with the tops of the pages missing. Following an email, Amazon reversed the charges and sent a new book which arrived in good condition. I would give Amazon high marks for addressing this problem.
The book itself is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best buy for those serious about clay
Phenomenal book. It covers the entire ceramic process from the constituents of the clay to drying, firing and glazing or decorating. The descriptions border on the scientific but are written in such a way that you can pick the book up to read for leasure.

Within its pages you will find how to mix a clay for a specific purpose, how to support huge statues and keep small tiles straight. How to fire bisquit and how to glaze (in detail and with recepies, but this is not a glaze book) or decorate. Whether you want to cast 10 thee pots or make a lifesize sculpture of an giraffe you will find hints and tips on how to do it. Everything you need to take your ceramics over the edge.

The artworks that illustrate the book and are used as examples might not be to everyones taste (they come from a school for experimental ceramics afterall) but they fit the explanations perfectly.

If you are serious about your ceramics and want to buy one book that explains the process without specialising on only one type of application (tiles, pots, sculpture) look no further!

If you are new to pottery of sculpture the contents might be a bit daunting. ... Read more
