This book contains only general knowledge information on Maine Coons. All information can be easily found on the Internet. I expectedto find more specific info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
As a new Maine Coon owner, I found this book very useful, in dispelling the facts from fiction.
I find I refer to it still, just as a reference to my cats Character.
I highly recommend this book to any prospected Maine coon owner or even current owners.Maine Coon Cats (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)

4-0 out of 5 stars not the same index
This book is helpful to new cat owers. But one of the reasons I got this book was to see what pepto bismol had to do with cats.It wasn't in the book so I'm guessing the wrong index image was scaned. Now I still don't know why.....

5-0 out of 5 stars maine coon
this short and to the point book on the maine coon cat was just what i was looking for. i have always had cats in my home, and just recently got a maine coon. i wanted to know more about this breed, if he needed anything special, and generally what to expect of my new cat.
this book explained all this and more. lovely the pictures. love my new cat. cat lovers would enjoy the company of one of these loving creatures in their home!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Novice Maine Coon Owner
Shortly after my father passed on and mom and I decided to "pool" our resources, our old cat also passed on after twenty-one years. So, after a month, we went to the local SPCA and adopted this kitten labelled "American Wirehair."In six months, we had an engaging monster of a cat on our hands.I had to take her to the vet for shots, and the vet remarked - "What a beautiful Maine Coon."I did not have the foggiest idea what the man was talking about, and did some homework. This book was part of that, since this cat exhibited behaviors I had never seen in a feline - love of playing with water, not just "talking" but positively "gabbing" with her tail, liking to be close but not in a lap, playing fetch, emotional range, and an almost eerie canine ability to problem solve. And in puzzling out this remarkable addition to our home, this book was very useful and clear in its explanations as to how the Maine Coons may have evolved their unique behaviors and high intelligence, how to treat and handle them, as well as care tips that are simple and quick. It was a great primer on what many pros in cat breeding call "the gentle giant."

I notice that many less than favorable reviews in this thread come from professional breeders and exhibiters.I am in no way qualified to speak to either, and I take them at their word that this book is not useful for those purposes. But for me - the accidental tyro owner - it really helped me understand my "dog in a cat suit."

Recommend.

2-0 out of 5 stars Uh...maybe worth $2.50
I was excited to order this book and read it and read it I did, in about 2 minutes. It has very cute pictures, but very very basic information and I was disappointed I paid $18 for this book. I am a future owner of 2 Scottish Fold kittens and this book was just a waste, except for some cute pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for Turk owners...
Given that it's the only book out there that details the Turkish Angora, it's worth picking up.However, I like its honesty in the demeanor of the animals, and it gives good tips for anyone who is merely an owner all the way up to an exhibitor.Great photos, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, informative portrayal of a beautiful cat
It is a real joy to find this excellent book about this rarebreed of cat. It is a must for those that are owned by - orcontemplate the beauty of - the Turkish Angora.

2-0 out of 5 stars Yawn
This Book is EXTREMELY outdated! It was copywrited in 1983 and has not been updated. The pictures of the cats are not even how they look today, let alone the picture of one breeder which makes me laugh by just the thought of their picture. The kittens are similar to a point but the ears on the pictures of this breed of cat seemed to be much smaller back then. Also it says the 'blue' has not been recognized yet and doesn't even mention the fawn colour. It has some relivant information, but for the most part, in 25 years too much has evolved for this book to be useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is the Abyssinian Cat
This was the first book I purchased after I got my Aby Cats and it is my Bible!Kate Faler when she wrote this book, (it was printed in 1983)was/is a practicing veterinarian that bred and owned these wonderful cats.I would reccomend any first time Aby owner to get this book first and then add the other books. The information contained in this book is timeless. That said, I would love to see an updated version. What fun it is to look at the pictures, even if some are in black and white, and see how similiar my kitties 20 years later look.
This book has saved the lives of two of my queens when they had some problems with their deliveries. The purchase price has more than paid for itself! I wouldn't own an Aby without it!
Thank You Kate!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, profound information
An aby breeder has lent me this book. Its excellent. It contains all you might want to know about sharing your life with abysinnian cat or more of them. It includes even instructions for first aid and keeping your cat healthy, how to prepare milk for kittens if queen fails to breastfeed, which plants to avoid, what toys are suitable etc. There is a history description on how abys have established themselves as a breed and what Britain has to do with it (and later USA). There are some beautiful photos, color and black and white. Its a must have for a breeder. However, keep in mind that book is - old. So some of the info (like information about colour variants of aby) is rusty. I do hope there will be a newer version of this book published soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Aby primer for first-timer or experienced owner
This book was recommended to me by my Abys' breeder and am I glad she did. It's chock-full of information on every aspect of the breed, from its history to methods of care, information on showing and breeding and an additional section on Somalis, the long-haired version of the Aby.It's down-to-earth, sensible and one can tell the author's love of the breed clearly from her words.

Before getting an Aby - a highly intelligent, active and social cat who needslots of love and attention - one would do well to give this book serious study.Know what you're getting into and the Aby will reward you with a life of insanity, activity and lots of LOVE!But don't buy an Aby thinking this is a "cat that will take care of itself".As Ms. Faler notes in this book, it is a people-loving breed that will flourish best in a home where it is not "just a pet", but an integral, adored member of the family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for lovers of Abyssinian breed
Kate Faler's book is detailed, practical and knowledgeable. Includes details of British cats behind American Abyssinians and lots of first class photos which really help show how the breed has developed in the last 50years.Now that American Abys have been imported into Europe, UK, Australiaso widely it is important to know about the US cats behind theseimports.Valuable hints on care of Abys also. Would be improved by a worldperspective and more details on original Abyssinian type developed inUnited Kingdom. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of birmans
What I liked most about this book is all the glossy pictures, there is atleast one on every page. The pictures are mostly of kittens but someadults as well.I'd recommend this book as a good summary of the birmanand cats in general, especially if your considering getting a birman andnever had a cat before.

The book is not that long and you can probablyread it in less than an hour.It covers the basics of the birman legend, character, breed standard and general cat care and health. If you wantmore in depth information then you would probably need to supplement itwith a more detailed cat guide.I would also have liked more descriptionand pictures of the newer birman colors, which it didn't cover.

So, insummary, great introductory book for the new birman owner, escpecially forthe price. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1988, when Laura Gould brought her newly-adopted cat George to the vet, the vet smirked at hearing the masculine name. He soon turned pale, after taking a closer look at George. George is a calico AND he is male. The logic of genetics that resulted from Gregor Mendel s famous experiments with peas tells us that only female cats can be calico. But George and his maleness are undeniable certainties. How do you get a George? This question led Laura Gould on an exploration of the facts and history of genetics. As she dipped into this knowledge, many more questions soon followed. This book portrays Gould s journey through the research and understanding of (cat) genetics and her journey through cat ownership. Ten years after the first publication of Cats are not Peas, the author updates the tale with two major developments in genetics: the sequencing of genomes and the production of clones. Where are cats on the list of species to first have their genomes sequenced? What was cloned first, a cat or a dog? The answers to these questions and others appear in the Addendum included in this new edition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A calico review
I have finally gotten around to reading and giving attention to the book by Laura Gould, Cats are not peas. It was a nice read, and made basic genetic concepts available to the non-bioscienc reader in an easy, flowing and non-scary way. I would certainally recommend this book to a non-biologist, a cat lover or a high school student that might be interested in this subject.

As mentioned above, I found the writing to be easy to absorb (unlike one of my favorite authors, who I have to tell myself that it is 'time to sit down and read another two chapters...'), and further, it does not talk down to the reader. I also adore the personal thoughts and feelings that the author writes about with her relationship with her two late feline companions. I am a catlover myself, and I fully understand where she is coming from on this level.

That said, I also found a small amount that I did not particularly react with rosey adulation too. First of all, (and I do not really blame the author, as she, like me, is a linguist, not a biotech person), though she uses a lot of wonderful non-academic references and cites them properly, she gives final defference to the peer reviewed academic biological sources. While I truly appreciated the way in which she points out the obvious faults that she found in biology text books in her research (text books in general are notorious for having faults and errors), she none-the-less accepts as infallable all of the precepts and pronuncements of what I call the peer reviewed academic 'atheistic Darwinist' views on life and its origins. I find the "atheistic Darwinists" to be as unbelievable as I do the "anthropromorphic theistic creator" 'truths' that the creationists shovel at us. I always ask the rational atheistic Darwinist to show me in the fossil record the transition species between the non-flowering and flowering plants, and they cannot do it. There is none to be found. Basically, both points of view require 'magical processes' to generate life.

Why do I point this out? Simply because the first edition of the author's book is a wonderful explanation of the genetics of calico cats, and how the very rare male calico in her life came to be. I have no faults to find with either her writing or research on this topic. What I find to be a bit heavy handed is in the final chapter (p.205) of the second edition where she is describing a research biologist who is "...a physician, a geneticist, and a devout Christian Fundamentalist. Fortunately he's also a firm believer in evolution...". I ask the author why is this fortunate? I neither 'believe' (which is an act of faith) in evolution or creationism. It matters not what I 'believe' (or as I say, 'accept' as truth until proven otherwise), nor what anyone else 'believes'. What matters is whether or not one's dogmatic beliefs, crutches and support system interfears with the prusuit of the truth. What troubles me the most is the absolute refusal for the biological peer review academic process to even think about (let alone look at evidence that counters the 'academically correct' position) anything that is not atheistic Darwinism. Or that the author finds that it is 'fortunate' that the person she is referring to'believes' in the Darwinist faith structure. I have no religious ax to grind, for I am neither a Christian, Fundamentalist Christian or atheist. All I ask is that when I read a book on life science, that the facts are presented (which the author does admirally for a non technical book) and leave the dogma for the religious studies people to argue over.

Other than this point, I found this book to be well written, and it will have a permanent place in my library. I would point out that the edition that I bought had a press error in that the pages from 152 to 157 were completely out of order, and that there were some minor page trimming issues as well, though this of course has nothing to do with the author or the content of the book, rather the publisher and the print shop.

In all, I give this effort a B+, and though I probably would not assign this to any of my grad students to read, would recommend this to those as I said previously are simply interested in calico cats and their genetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for calico cat fans
I really enjoyed this book. It was entertaining to know the history and science behind my silly cat's colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great if you like both cats and genetics!
This is a book about genetics, from the point of view of a cat owner and her rare male calico cat. As the author unravels the mystery of her male calico, the reader learns about the history and science of genetics.

This book is perfect for anyone looking for a beginners approach to genetics and who also likes cats! I'm thrilled to see it back in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone who may be interested in breeding cats or just a plain interest in cats period.
A male calico so rare that most veterinarians have never seen one - "Cats are Not Peas: A Calico History of Genetics" is an examination of the strange and off biology of the feline species which work apparently quite a bit differently than that of the common pea. In a second edition, the first published sixteen years ago, is newly enhanced with a lengthy addendum covering all the new discoveries and advances in the study of feline genetics and so much more. "Cats are Not Peas: A Calico History of Genetics" is highly recommended to community library pets/wildlife shelves with a focus on animal biology and for anyone who may be interested in breeding cats or just a plain interest in cats period.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift for any cat lover
If you love cats, you will love this book, and want to share it with others.Laura Gould has written the charming, witty, delightful story of her male calico cat, George, and his feline pal Max in their California home. That alone would have been a wonderful book. But aren't all calico cats female? The vet turned pale upon seeing George, obviously male and obviously calico.Gould intersperses George's' life story with her own investigation into how he could have come to exist. This makes a gentle, funny, and accurate introduction to genetics, including side trips to libraries with insane librarians preventing the books from being used, to theories of sex before the discovery of genes and DNA, and to rare Japanese sources.Cat lore, history and science are beautifully balanced in this book. The second edition brings the genetics up to date, while keeping all the charm of George.A superb read! ... Very informative. Pictures were nice and colorful.I would recommend this book to anyone who owns a Ragdoll.

5-0 out of 5 stars What cute pictures!
This book has some of the cutest pictures of ragdolls that I've ever seen. There's also a variety of different types of ragdolls at different ages throughout the book. The information is helpful without droning on and on about the most mudnae things like some other books. In other words it's helpful and right to the point. Kind of like my review. I can't imagine anyone reading this book and not wating to get a ragdoll cat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Ragdoll book
If you just want info on how to raise your pet ragdoll, this is fairly informative, but I felt thare was too much info regarding showing your cat, etc. I have no interest in breeding or showing my ragdoll, therefore I found a few of the chapters to be excessive. I would have preferred more info on just raising my particular breed.

3-0 out of 5 stars some helpful information
This book is okay it has some good general information in it regarding kittens and cats.I personally feel the book is written to be to sweet and sappy.I purchased it because I was getting a new Ragdoll Kitten. After reading this book you would think that Ragdoll kittens are so sweet they do not even behave like a normal kitten.Well, I have now had my Ragdoll for 1 month and he behaves just like any normal kitten would.Sure there are differences in personalities of different breeds but a kitten is a kitten. As far as the book goes it is okay to read, nothing special.

I really hate to be rude, but this "book" is a joke. I have had Persian cats all of my life, and I hoped this "book" would be a nice addition to my vast collection. I really doubt if Sandra Toney has even held a Persian Cat, let alone think she has the authority or knowledge to write about them. This "book" seems like a 'copy' and 'paste' version of all the info available online for free! I have seriously seen exact quotes online that she "borrowed" for her version of a book. 2-0 out of 5 stars Falls Short on Breed Descriptions
When I purchased this book, I thought I would get a book that was going to give me a little information on general cat care and more on breeds and CFA's breed standards for cats. I was sadly mistaken. This book goes into a lot of detail in caring for a cat and only has a short section of colored pictures in the middle with the breeds of cat. This is not a book I would recommend to use if you're trying to learn the different breeds of CFA recognized cats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
My family consists of 4 members which includes our baby girl, a 3 and a half year old persian.I have been on a hunt for reading material that best describes the feline nature, behavior, needs and healthcare and I have finally found that in this book. After reading other cat care books I feel this one has a lot of fact not opinion.I would highly recommend this book whether you have a pedigree cat or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive book on the breed
The late Joan Read (Chidley Norfolk) did a great service to Norfolk owners worldwide. Not only is this the best Norfolk book but it is among the best breed-related books, period. Norfolk owners are fortunate that such a book exists given the rarity of the breed. Edited by Nat LaMar (Reidmar Norfolk) this is a well written, carefully constructed encyclopedia of the Norfolk Terrier. There have been three editions of this book with the first now being scarcer than hen's teeth. The second edition added a bit of updated show results and the third edition is essentially the same as its predecessor except for the cover.

This book is a complete guide to the breed. The first section discusses the breed's origins in the UK and later in the US. Even though the breed is a relatively new one its background is still murky. But somehow Mrs. Read was able to secure copious photographs and drawings of early Norwich (the drop-eared type later to become Norfolk) Terriers and thus deliver a detailed history. This part of the book is timeless and will educate future Norfolk owners for generations to come.

The next part of the book covers more recent history, dovetailing into the predominant breeders circa 1989. Unfortunately contractual entaglements in Mrs. Read's estate prevent any modification of the book's content so this section will not updated in the forseeable future.

The other chapters were written by prominent fanciers. There are chapters on Norfolk behavior, breed idiosyncracies, involvement in non-conformation events, the breed standard, and health issues. The latter is particularly well-written and still relevant. Unfortunately the genetics chapter reflects what was known in 1989 and is of little value today. This is the book's only limitation.

The Norfolk Terrier is a "must-have" book for anyone who owns a Norfolk. It should be required reading for those who wish to judge the breed. Thank you Joan!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful.
This is a very nice poster for identifying the major cat breeds. I don't like that some of the cats look too similar. I think more characteristic cats that showed off their differences better would have been better though. But I do like that the full breed name is listed. It isn't just a "Siamese", but a "Seal Point Siamese" (seal meaning the color, point meaning the marks being at the ears, nose, feet and tail).

If you want to know more about cats I'd highly recommend a good guide to go with this that would tell you more, for instance, that the points on a Siamese is actually a form of Albinism (Albino) and that the color only shows up on the cooler parts of the body and everything else is lighter, this is also why they have blue eyes. Or perhaps that Himalyans are actually a cross between Persions and Siamese, that is why they look like a Persian, but have the markings of a Siamese.

This poster is very clear. The names aren't very large, but are clearly stated and the poster quality itself is very good. It is a typical laminated poster.

It comes from Amazon rolled up in a tube, but mine was quite roughed up. This might be because the end of the tube was missing when it arrived and someone may have taken it out and looked at it. You may want to keep this in mind when ordering if you need it without creases. I think Amazon should have sealed the tub better.

I personally bought this poster to make flash cards for my child who is doing Glenn Domann's Bits of Intellegence program. The cat pictures are large, clear, and non-abiguous and so they work perfectly. I would have only prefered the background to be white rather than blue. I really hope they make more posters like this of other animals. I'd buy them all.

I'm giving this 4 rather than 5 stars because of the blue background and because I would have liked the cat pictures to have been a little more different from one another. ... Read more
