5-0 out of 5 stars Gret Book onRussian Blue
I have owned a Russian Blue and didn't know much about the breed. My wife and I are interested in getting another as a pet since they are such great family cats.

I bought this book on ebay and was surpised at how much I had to pay.It was worth every penny. This book was published in 1983 and is no longer available new.Ingeborg Urcia is an authority on the breed and her book is very informative. She is no longer living.I loved this book and it really sold me on this breed and had great advice on finding a reputable cattery and the right cat for our home.

Although you will pay quite a bit for the book, it is worth it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice photos as stated, but misinformation in the text.
This book does have some beautiful photos indeed. I cannot speak of the other breeds, but as a Manx breeder, I was very disturbed at the description given for this particular breed. The statement made 'thecrossing of two tailless cats will produce either no kittens orstill-birth' is absolute rubbish!!Another ridiculous and misinformedcomment was 'The Rumpy Manx has no trace of tail and has difficultyclimbing and jumping.' I hate to think what the author may have got wrongon the other breeds!!Not very good for a book meant to inform the public. I was very disappointed indeed!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Those New To The Longhaired Felis Domesticus
The longhaired "Felis domesticus," or house cat, is a wonderful animal companion. This little book written by a top breeder of longhairs (and who is married to a veterinarian) is enormously useful for people new to longhaired cats. I generally agree with the author on most issues (although I think more behavior is breed-linked than she does), and find this book most useful in the pre-cat ownership stage. She has an excellent section on considerations necessary before adopting a new cat.

Her advice and information is presented in an easy to understand manner, but most of this will be known by experienced cat owners already. People who have never owned a cat before (and particularly those considering a Persian or other longhaired cat) should definitely read this book. If you have had cats for a while, there is probably little new information to be learned here, although many of the illustrations are nice. One key to take away from this book is that while longhairs may look more glamorous than shorthair cats, the upkeep on a longhaired cat is significantly greater, particularly in the grooming department. Having said that, I think they are totally worth the extra effort.

She discusses longhairs and breeds (I am partial to neutered male Persians and Maine Coons myself), but emphasizes that all cats are individuals with unique personalities. I agree with her, but want to add my own comment on top of hers: if you want a pet, you will gain nothing by having a pedigreed cat (in fact they may be less healthy because of greater inbreeding, though not necessarily). Having said that, please consider rescuing a cat from your local shelter. If you want to show or breed the cat, she gives some basic information on this as well.

Cats make wonderful companions, and I highly recommend this book for those interested in getting their first cat, while more experienced cat owners can probably safely skip it, although it still makes a nice reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better............
I feel that although Alice Rheapresents alot of good, common-sense ideas from her long association with cats (hers included) and their owners, she falls short in some parts of this book when it comes to judging the cause or the solution to some of the behaviors mentioned.

Her "if-all-else-fails" attitude of locking a cat inside a carrier for the night (and placing the carrier in another room) is, in my opinion, downright ABUSIVE, CRUEL, and traumatic for the cat. Even if the carrier were big enough for a litterbox, and at least a dish of water (which kitty could tip over in his frantic efforts to get out), it would still be cruel. When getting out of bed in the middle of the night, what are theodds that the cat owner will GENTLY place the cat in the carrier???? And once kitty is locked up in this jail cell of a carrier, suppose there was a fire, or an equally urgent emergency that would cause the residents to leave the home abruptly -- what would happen to kitty, locked up in a carrier in a remote part of the house or garage??? Whether remembered and or forgotten, kitty stands to lose its life!!!!

And although she makes a good point about "Bad Breath" (may be a sign of serious dental disease), she doesn't pick up this thread in the "Messy Eater" section -- messy eating could also be a sign of diseased gums or teeth.

"Bed Lying on" does not even mention the SIMPLEST approach to keeping or getting cat hairs off the bed (in addition to locking the cat out of the bedroom buit NOT in a carrier) -- 1) Daily Brushing and 2) daily use of lint rollers, available in any drug store or pet store. My 3 cats, two of whom are longhaired (and who love being brushed every day) are welcome on my bed -- and so is the lint roller.

I was disappointed with those specific parts of the book -- with all those years of contact with cats and cat owners (and being, herself a multi-pet owner), Ms. Rhea did her readers (many of them not familiar with cat behavior) a disservice in those specific areas of her book, by not pursuing a less abusive way of dealing with these problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help with a smile
This book brought a lot of smiles and laughs of recognition. As the "pets" of 2 homebound felines, we gained a world of understanding about how our companions viewed us and our shared home. The startle-can trick works wonders for keeping cats off furniture, even when we "alpha-cats" are not around. Handy habit-troubleshooting guide and clear explanations of what underlies the behavior. Have already shared the book with other cat-companions and they are getting their own copies for continued future reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Owners, Bad Habits
All in all, a fantastic book! I have recommended this book to tens of people already ... if you want clear, common sensical and effective ways of (re)training your kitty or want to understand why your cat is peeing in your bed/lounge/laundry ... then this is the book for you. Yes, it is written in a simple, good natured way, but if you are actually willing to put to work the advice given, it is a god-send. This is not a book for people who want a quick-fix, sell me a pill type solutions!! All the recommendations in here work - I have two living examples - but they all take some effort and time ...

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.
I wanted so much more from this book.I felt that the information contained was mainly common sense, and the writing seemed to be aimed toward a small child. Not only that, but the quality of this print is pretty bad - cheap paper and binding. There are so many better books out there, with creative and innovative techniques described that WORK.My kitties required that I try another title: "Is Your Cat Crazy?: Solutions from the Casebook of a Cat Therapist" by John C. Wright.I found this title to be much more helpful.

I gave this book two stars because a child might benefit from it, or even just someone who simply has not spent much time around cats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about your cat...in simple terms
Being the "protector and slave" of 8 cats, I thought I had a fair amount of knowledge on how to deal with feline behavior!I had also read a large number of books over the years on the subject. However, I wasreally surprised at how useful Alice Rhea's book is and how much more Ihave learned about cats from it.A huge variety of problems are answeredin the book in a clear and simple style which outlines the problem, explains why it happens, suggests ways of stopping it, and details how tostop it from ever happening in your household.Ms. Rhea writes in a mostentertaining way and obviously is a great cat lover.I have recommendedthis book to many friends, including to experienced cat breeders. It is amost comprehensive book at a bargain price.Highly recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Rex Cats
The book is informative and simple enough to follow.Has a wonderful section on how to select a breeder and what questions to ask.Unfortunately the book was ordered on 2/1 and received on 3/22.Other than the shipping, satisfied with the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thin on data, but what's there is good
When we got our new Selkirk Rex kitten, I was anxious to find out more about the breed. I knew how much it had helped us, when our mostly-Maine Coon cat grew old, to know that the breed suffered from lower back problems. We made adjustments in his lifestyle, which must have worked; the Maine Coon lived to nearly 19.

This was the only book I found that offered more than a couple of paragraphs about the Selkirk Rex (like the LaPerm, it's a relatively new breed); even so, most of the information here is about the Cornish Rex and the Devon Rex. That is, when it's about the Rex at all. Fully half the 100-page-or-so book is generic information about taking care of your cat, such as choosing a vet, feeding, and the declawing question. That's not necessarily bad, for those who haven't owned a cat before, and the book is cheap enough that I don't resent the "extra" information.

On the other hand, the information specific to the Rex (and to the Selkirk in particular) is good enough to shoot the review up to 4 stars.

First, it has incredibly pretty pictures of each of the Rex breeds, lots of them. If you want to compare your new (or proposed) kitty the best-of-the-breed, you'll have plenty of opportunity to do so. That might make it worth the money right there.

The authors trace the history of each breed, but more importantly they give plenty of information about the cats' temperment (these are all extremely social cats, and now I know that our kitten's insatiable curiousity will outlast kittenhood) and unique needs. For example, I'm strongly advised to pat-dry Meriwether after a bath (which is recommended once a month), rather than rub his fur dry, because that'll develop mats. It doesn't answer everything (is it just Meri, or are Selkirks all not-jumpers?) but that would be too much to ask for.

I've found some of this information on my Internet searches, but not all of it. If for no other reason than the collection of "ooh, isn't she pretty!" photos, I'm glad I got this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant overview of Rex cats
A pleasant book that is well written with many wonderful photos. However, I got the impression reading it that Helgren was only personally familiar with the Cornish Rex and researched all the others. I found some factual errors and editing mistakes that were distracting to me. Still, a nice overview of all the Rex cats. I highly recommend "The Guide to Owning a Cornish Rex Cat" by Greta Huls for those wanting more detailed information about that breed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The beautiful Maine Coon Cat book
Of the three books that I purchased on the subject of owning a Maine Coon Cat. This book has the most spectular pictures of these breathtaking animals. The photographer did an outstandling job to catching the image and personality of each animals.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good 38 page start that doesn't make it to the finish line
"Guide to Owning a Maine Coon Cat" starts out strong with a detailed exposition of the various Maine Coon origin theories:the 'Marie Antoinette'; the 'Viking'; the 'Racoon cross'; the 'Lynx cross', among others (I favor the 'Viking' since Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats look an awful lot alike).

The author then spends a good deal of print on the Maine Coon personality and the breed standard and colors. The photographs are beautiful, professional and in color.

It's when we get to the chapters on care, grooming, and feeding that this book strays away from Maine Coons and becomes generic and uninteresting. The photographs deteriorate into advertisements for various grooming and food products. Some show the covers of other books from the same firm that published this book, i.e. T.F.H. Publications, Inc.

Go ahead and buy this book, but buy it for the first 38 pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very glitzy pictures of the many faces of Maine Coon cats.
The basic content of this book is generic to all cats, but what sets it apart from others is the very high quality of its pictures.

The reader can get a very good idea of all the background, behavioral characteristicsas well as colors and patterns without a lot of further research.Easyreading for the new MC owner but not as complete as "That YankeeCat," or "This is the Maine Coon Cat."

2-0 out of 5 stars Half-baked Book
The first half of this book is very good detailing the Maine Coon breed, history and standards. Wonderful photos. The second half fails miserably. It is too generic. It does not go into specific details about thisparticular breed. It just gives the general feeding and caring patternswhich are similar to other cats and other books that I have read. It doesnot tell you what the ideal weight should be, etc. Another area that itfails is to tell you about a specific hereditary trait which I found outabout on the internet: hip dysplasia. So only two stars for this book. ... Read more
