3-0 out of 5 stars OK book, really not needed to pass the AT-SAT
I've been working as a controller for over a year now, and bought this book in preparation for taking the AT-SAT over two years ago. It does have some nice to know information on the hiring and training process, but the AT-SAT itself is supposed to be an aptitude test so I'm not really sure if studying for the test is really needed. I believe only advantage I felt that I got from reviewing this book is I knew (generally) what I was going to see on the actual test.

That said, the letter factory and ATC simulation on the CD included with the book are very different from the actual test. While the basic layout of each is the same, the actual test is much easier than the CD. An individual has created a web site that has a much more accurate representation of the actual test elements.

In short, if you can get this book used at a price that would allow you to sell it to someone else close to what you paid for it, go ahead and get it. I would pass on this if I was paying full price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very accurate or up to date
I bought this book a few years ago (I have since been hired and am an air traffic controller). The book gives you a vague idea at best of what you will see when you take the test.I would recommend checking sites like stuckmic as opposed to getting this book as they will have more and better information and you can post questions and participate in conversations in the forums if you like.It is also useful to follow the forums to find out when others who applied to your job posting are getting offer letters and such.Getting hired is quite a long ordeal so it's nice to know that you aren't the only one waiting months for the next phase of the hiring process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good to know!
This book is great for anyone interested in becoming an ATC. It covers what to expect of the career, before and after getting the job. The sample pre-employment test gives a good heads-up on what to expect. I would recommend this book to anyone considering ATC as a career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!
This book and interactive study guide helped me quite a bit.
The PC program more so than the book.
The program is like a game, and very accurate to the actual test.
Some minor differences:
in the "landing the planes" game, when you set a new heading, the planes arch to that new heading, appropriately to approximate physics. However, in the actual test, the planes do immediate 90' angle turns.
This messed me up a bit when taking the test, because, part of your grade is determined by how few course corrections you make. Also, it caused me to miss judge my very first course correction, and I crashed a plane.Bummer.
But I still did get a 90.6 on the entire test.

The book is good for...well not much.it actually has a lot of errors in the answer key, but if you don't realize those errors, you probably shouldn't be an air traffic controller anyways.

I highly recommend that you just play that game over and over again.Keep playing it until you have mastered all of the sections, and then play it some more.Play that thing up until the morning before your test.I cannot stress enough how beneficial this game is to your overall grade.
It will boost by a factor of 'amazing' your quickness of thought, your committal under stress, and your confidence in knowing that you are right.
Man, that letter factory game will eat your lunch if you are not prepared for it.
And all of these games in this program are designed somewhat harder than the actual test.

Get This Game.
Play it over and over.
and study some of the other things.
It WILL give you a substantial advantage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yea the software wasn't that great but....
I just took the test in November (2009), and I'm glad I had the software to prepare me. I didn't read the book really, because I figured everything I needed to know was in the CD. It really prepared me for the test too; I scored a 88.5. Although, the Analogies were a little more difficult than the software, the rest was right on target. ... Read more

From the supplier: The increasing number of women joining the traditionally male-dominated logistics profession has prompted the development of a study to address various topics that relate to such increasing gender diversity. A comparison of male and female practitioners' attitudes toward career-related opportunities and issues facing women logisticians showed significant differences in opinion, particularly on career opportunities.

From the supplier: The relationship of truckload drivers' attitudes and the years the respondents spent in their profession and the time spent on the road can provide trucking companies with significant information regarding employee behavior. Results showed that negative attitudes such as dissatisfaction with supervisors and promotional opportunities were associated with longer occupational tenure of the drivers. These negative attitudes also include dissatisfaction with the equipment being used, benefits and drivers' perception of the company's attitudes towards them. The time spent on the road, however, did not significantly influence drivers' attitudes.

Editorial Review

Product Description
"TRB Special Report 250 - Air Traffic Control Facilities: Improving Methods to Determine Staffing Requirements" reviews the methodologies by which Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimates and applies its staffing standards, examines the feasibility and cost of modifying agency staffing standards and developing alternative approaches for application to individual facilities, and recommends an improvement strategy. The appropriate level of staffing for air traffic control (ATC) has long been controversial. As a service of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), ATC is almost exclusively staffed by federal employees. Following the controller strike of 1981, which resulted in the firing of two-thirds of controllers, congressional concerns about staffing were focused primarily on the overall size and rebuilding of the workforce. During the 1990s, however, congressional concerns shifted to questions about whether staffing levels are appropriate at the agency's highest traffic locations. FAA has long had difficulty staffing its ATC centers, terminal radar approach control facilities, and other terminal facilities in metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. In addition to being the most demanding locations because of the volume and types of traffic that must be handled, they are among the areas with the highest cost of living. Concerns about stressful working conditions and the amount of overtime required of workers at these locations have been raised regularly by the controllers union and sometimes by members of Congress. In the aftermath of the controllers strike, FAA developed analytical models for estimating the number of specialists required to control traffic safely. The application of these models to particular locations became a source of controversy between FAA and the controllers union. The committee formed to examine whether these models were sufficiently accurate for estimating staffing levels at specific locations determined that they could not be relied upon for this purpose. The models provide a useful starting point, but the staffing estimates they produce need to be adjusted on the basis of both local conditions and the norms that exist across FAAs workplaces. The committee recommended a process that FAA could follow to make these adjustments. ... Read more
