Teen's Guide to College
This is a great book. What I like most is that there are (non-overwhelming) sections my son can read on his own. The organization is quite easy to follow and very comprehensive. Part I focuses on "You're going to be a freshman". This is a good place to start but not obvious to all authors who write books on preparing for college. Some of these books might cause anxiety attacks because they are so focused on every move you must make from day 1 to get into college. This book actually tries to prepare kids (and parents) with what to expect when they get to High School. There are messages throughout the book written specifically for the students and some written just for parents. There are "advice" boxes throughout written by students, admissions officers and guidance counselors. I ordered 7 books on preparing for college and this one ranks in the top 2 for me! Writing sample from Chapter 1 (You're Going to Be a Freshman): "You have to speak up for yourself. In middle school, your parents probably helped you if you got into a tough situation....They were the ones making the phone call or visiting the teacher. In high school, there will be times when you will have to deal with situations on your own, such as speaking with a teacher about homework...you have to develop the ability to get advice from your parents, figure out how to solve the problem, and then take action." ... The School-to-Work Opportunities Act (STWOA), passed by Congress in 1994, provided more than $1.5 billion over a five-year period to support increased school-to-work activities in the nation’s public high schools. However, after its initial five years, STWOA was not reauthorized. In this report, the author uses a national dataset to measure the success of various programs (including Tech Prep and Career Academies, which differ from the STWOA activities). He finds that certain STC activities do promote postsecondary enrollment and employment and that a case can be made for funding the types of programs supported by STWOA. However, he also notes that there is a pressing need for a serious evaluation of the effectiveness of the specific activities remaining in California and of any that might arise in the future. ... I will be a freshman in college in the fall and I always thought my major would be pre-med. I recently decided that going to school for like ten years wasn't for me. So, I decided to buy this book as a career assessment so that I could explore the possibilities and decide what I wanted to do. Well this book was no help. I do not reccommend anyone buy this.
