This insightful work will interest high school students and college undergraduates, career-changers and psychologists seeking new directions, as well as guidance counselors and parents.

Psychology is one of the most popular majors in college today, with the number of students enrolled in the discipline having surged some 200% in the last 10 years. In this book, dozens of outstanding practitioners and scholars explain how quickly the career opportunities for graduates with psychology degrees are growing—in talk therapy and clinical research, but also at agencies ranging from the CIA and Homeland Security to the Library of Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission. In preparing his book, Oster contacted dozens of working psychologists and asked them what advice they would offer today's aspiring psychologists. Their responses provide a glimpse into a changing and ever-expanding field. Dozens of contributors recall their thoughts and actions as they plotted careers—or landed jobs by surprise. From one psychologist who put her research aside to become president of a university, to another who ended his work with children to become an author of psychological mystery books, the dozens of practitioners interviewed share the sometimes-humorous, often-difficult experiences and decisions they faced as they completed their college years and built successful careers.

The book includes advice on making the right choice from among psychology careers in fields old and new, the ins and outs of graduate school, and the lessons seasoned professionals learned in their quests for meaningful careers. Web sites for more information on specialties are listed, as are suggested additional readings. The book also includes sections on making the most of undergraduate years, and on balancing the demands of career and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the author
This book is designed for the fourth through seventh grade student, so it's a tad easier than Real Life Math Mysteries. People from Alaska and elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest share the math they use in their jobs as bush pilots, commercial divers, fishermen, loggers, organic farmers, soup kitchen operators, beekeepers, software designers, kayak guides, air traffic controllers...It was a lot of fun to write. I think you'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Math Meaningful!
Here's a fun and engaging new math book from Prufrock Press."On-The-Job Math Mysteries" has 70 plus pages of math problems and solutions which are based upon standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The problems are based on real people who use math in a variety of occupations.Black and white photographs of individuals at work add to the real-life theme.
Some problems include helpful diagrams and charts.

This book is useful for advanced elementary and middle school students. The complexity ranges from simple equations to multi-step problems which require more thought. The math starts off easy and becomes progressively harder, so most students might prefer to work through the pages consecutively. The table of contents has a nice breakdown of what concepts are needed to solve each unit.As an example, the master carver section involves skills in diagram drawing, subtraction, multiplication, measurement in feet and inches, diameter and circumference, weight in pounds and tons, decimals, percents, time in weeks and years, and estimation.

One of the easier problems involves an eleven year old circus acrobat.Cristian performs 25 feet above the ground without a net.The student is asked to figure how many stories high Cristian's high wire is, if a typical story is ten feet high. There are three photos accompanying the problem, and a brief description of Cristian's work, delivered with some direct quotes.Math is Cristian's favorite subject!

A three page spread on Ken Benjamin, Soup Kitchen Operator, has a total of seven problems.Students must read a pancake recipe and determine how to enlarge it to feed 45 people.Another set of problems requires the calculation of guest statistics; for example, "what percentage of the people being served are girls?" The text explains why Ken decided to start a soup kitchen, and how he relies on donations to operate.

The variety of occupations covered in this book is quite diverse. In addition to those positions already noted, kids can read about how math is useful to the organic farmer, beekeeper, heavy equipment operator, software engineer, kayak guide, air traffic controller, bush pilot, and more. There are 22 occupations mentioned in all.Kids who appreciate academic work that has a purpose and real life applications will love OTJ Math Mysteries!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for those who want to consider alternative careers
"Opportunities in Biological Science Careers" is a good reference for students who want to consider alternative careers that include Biological Sciences.Such students should start consulting guides such as this one, when they are in Middle School.

I strongly recommend that you buy the latest version/edition of this book that is available.Due to rapid changes in Biochemistry laboratory testing careers such as DNA testing, the opportunities are, also, changing rapidly.

Please be aware that there are alternative careers that may not be mentioned in this book.I found a lack of information on sales careers, business careers, analytical chemistry careers, careers in the pharmaceutical industry, and careers that have some involvement in agriculture. All of these careers would involve a minor in Biological Sciences as a minimum. Most careers that involve Biological Science also involve general chemistry, basic organic chemistry, biochemistry, and/or analytical chemistry.

I recommend this book but I also recommend a second similar book to be sure to get somewhat more coverage of the possibilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy several copies to help friends focus on patient care
I bought Toby's book out of interest first then realized I need several copies.

My expertise is Business Management and Marketing across the board so I read the Marketing section first and found it concise and superbly written. It described all the elements of marketing as applied to all companies from large businesses where one tends to specialize to small startups where one does everything. It works for those in transition between departments as well as for developing personnel.

My passion is improvements in patient care, so I am always trying to break down the silos and develop a more patient centric approach. The book is one tool that helped me understand the viewpoints of others and get help from experts in different medical specialties.

Naturally I passed on my book in the second week, now I need more so I can read the other chapters properly myself as well as donate a few.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK!!!
I had been looking for quite a long time now, a book that would help me understand what the jobs in the pharmaceutical industry were and what the responsibilities in each one of them were.
This book does it all!
It has a ton of information in it and it is very easy to read!
Congrats to the writer, Toby Freedman, she has made it simple for all of us!

5-0 out of 5 stars It is the one!!!!
For those in life science field who are feeling trapped and searching for alternative career opportunities outside academia, I highly recommend this one. Compare to numerous career counseling books out there, "Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development" (COBDD) is the most informative book I have ever read. Instead of putting lots of weight on self assessment and how to write a resume (don't get me wrong, they are also very important) COBDD is about facts, lots of facts and details about most of the career paths in Bio-pharma industry. After reading the book, you will find out that "industry" is not just a word opposite to "academia". It is not a mystery anymore. You will get an in-depth understanding of a career you want to pursue. The book is well organized in chapters regarding different career path. You can read from the beginning to re-evaluate your decision of switching (knowing what you're getting into and giving a second thought is always the right thing to do before starting anything new) or go directly to the one you have been thinking of for a while. For each career path, you will not only receive a general description of the field, but also detailed information of all aspects, well laid in different sections and sub-sections--just to name a few of my favorites, "a typical day in XXX", "pros and cons of the job", "salary and compensation", "career tracks in XXX", "landing a job in XXX". A really good hand book for job opportunities in Biotech and Drug development it is!

5-0 out of 5 stars Job Hunter's Must-Have Resource
In graduate school, I always knew I wanted to leave academia and find a job in the biotechnology industry.I started reading books like "Finding Your North", "Guide to Nontraditional Careers in Science", and "Leaving the Ivory Tower: Alternative Careers in Science".These books were helpful, but they were mainly informational interviews from experienced people.Their stories were inspiring and it gave me a good idea of what areas I might be interested in.
However, what sets "Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development" apart is the extensive research done on each career and how they are connected. For someone just graduating, it was good to know that there several opportunities that can lead to each career path. The book also outlines the most common paths taken by those in the industry. This book is exhaustive in it's description of the day-to-day, advantages/disadvantages, and what it takes to be successful in each career.
As a job hunter, the most helpful sections were the descriptions of career tracks in each area and how to land a job in that area (Legal, Operations, Marketing, etc).If you are looking for a job in this tough economy, this book is a MUST-HAVE RESOURCE.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Learn about Careers in Biopharma!
This book is so multifaceted. It describes very clearly how the various divisions and departments of biopharma fit together. You learn the requirements for each career. You learn about suggested personal traits, comparative salaries, job security, do's and don'ts, pros and cons of each type of position, and how to switch careers within biopharma. You read lists of personal attributes which would contraindicate a particular career choice. You read about a typical day-in-the-life of various positions....

I've read or perused six Biopharma career books, and this is the best one I've found by far!I can't imagine how it could be any more comprehensive, helpful, and easy-to-read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "paper mentor" for the professional woman
This book is an eloquently written anthology which addresses the unique challenges faced by professional women through different phases of their lives -- a must read for any modern, working woman who hopes to achievesome kind of balance between her career and personal lives.NancyKaltreider effectively articulates the dilemmas faced by such women and indoing so,validates this struggle.Readers will indeed find here a"paper mentor" to help guide and encourage them along theirjourney. This is by far the best work that I have read on the subject anda well worthwhile purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly what I hoped it would be.
I am a 26 year old woman who is grinding her way through a PhD program in biology at a California university. When I heard of this book's publication, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I hoped that itswriters would address many of the anxieties that I face: The two bodycareer problem, when/if to have a family, how to balance career ambitionswith sweetie quality time. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. Thecontributors have achieved a level of success in their careers that is nottypical. Furthermore, the kinds of careers that these women have anythingthat I, or most women grad students, can realistically hope to achieveourselves. Thus, I found most of their personal accounts pretty irrelevant(I simply can't relate to the issues and anxieties faced by a dean at amedical school) and somewhat irritating: By omitting the experiences of"regular career gals with PhD's" from this book, I feel that theeditors implied that only the women who achieve stellar success have anyright to worry about the kinds of issues that I mentioned above. I'd havepreferred to hear from female grad students, postdocs, and career womenwith PhDs who have satifying, but not necessarily insanely high-powercareers. I would have rather read the accounts of women who discovered, intheir third of fourth year of grad schol, that they probably WEREN'T goingto be members of the National Academy or deans of prestigious departmentsand how they switched gears. This book is no "paper mentor".Thefact that this book cost $58 only added insult to injury.

1-0 out of 5 stars First book I've ever returned.
I was hoping for more. This book is written by accomplished women with lots to say.Presumably, none of them had time to say it, because this work is only a first and superficial pass at a cnallenging problem.Thatstill would have been enjoyable, but for the incredible $58.00 price.Thisbook might be useful for a wealthy 23 year old contemplating a career.Forthose of us "in the trenches", the subtitle of one chapter, thereis nothing here you don't already know.I believe these authors could formthe nucleus of a worthwhile, in depth sequel, perhaps including surveys andcasting a wide net among us for thoughtful solutions.(I am the male halfof a two physician marriage, now in its 16th year.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive analysis of women's important life choices
This is a very thought/emotional provoking book on choices that women have in making life choices (career track, mommy track, single, choosing to be childless). This book is a collection of articles by different womenprofessionals. I enjoyed the authors' psychological perspectives oncommon issues and themes underlying life choices for women in choosing tobalance relationships and career. The book is enlightening because ittalks about the experiences of women going through their decision makingprocess. The reading experience is intense and rewarding. ... Read more

Product Description

What constitutes a successful life? How do middle-aged men and women who are at the pinnacle of their profession conceptualise success?Do such men and women differ markedly in their conceptions of what constitutes success?

Sheelagh O'Donovan-Polten provides an unprecedented window into the most private thinking about success of four male and four female middle-aged lawyers, each of whom is widely recognised to be at the apex of the legal profession in Canada. Using a phenomenological mode of inquiry, she compiles a comprehensive profile of each lawyer's unique construction of success and, through inductive analysis, arrives at a composite rendition of life-career success during middle adulthood. Extending the lines of inquiry of Robert Kegan and Carol Gilligan and incorporating insights of several other adult development and career development theorists, she arrays fourteen core attributes of life-career success within the framework of a metaphorical scales.

This sophisticated model of life-career success enables O'Donovan-Polten to explore the relationship between the evolution of the self during middle adulthood and middle-aged persons' conceptualisations of what constitutes success.Having developed a detailed context within which the gender factor is isolated for close scrutiny, she provides evidence of continued institutionalised discrimination inherent in the very language and processes of law.Rather than ending up with attributes identified predominantly with one gender or the other, she manages to illustrate the complexities of gender identity in relation to significant values and constructions of the self and of success.Ultimately, success is shown to be a context-dependent, multifaceted, paradoxical and ever-evolving concept.

The Scales of Success will have a great deal of appeal to professionals working in the areas of developmental psychology, vocational psychology, career development, human resource development, adult education, and related areas. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume represents the first systematic attempt to apply a pattern approach to a comprehensive longitudinal investigation. It focuses on individual differences in female career development, from early adolescence through young adulthood. Rather than constructing a general model of career development, the authors use the interplay between theory and observation to build networks of patterns demonstrating the long-term consequences for adult women's career involvement, their educational levels, their family commitments, and their social networks.

Throughout their investigation the authors interpret individuals' patterns as characterizing processes that underlie women's differential development. They illustrate that a research strategy oriented toward pattern analysis and related methodology reveals information that is generally obscured in more traditional variable-oriented designs. They also argue that a pattern approach is particularly suited to the tenets of modern interactionism, which provides the theoretical foundation of the study.

Product Description
Career development must be based on an understanding both of the working context and of one's own personal needs. This forms the basis of guidance given in this book, which includes contributions from three other specialists in career management and organizational dynamics. Your Career, Your Life begins by exploring what work offers the individual, reasons why we do it, positive and negative experiences and both personal and external drivers. The author then looks closely at the individual's relationship with the employer organization and at global, particularly technological, trends in the information world, explaining how to assess career satisfaction and choose techniques for getting 'unstuck'. A variety of support and self-assessment processes (such as shadowing, mentoring, performance monitoring, psychometric testing) are presented to progress the reader towards actively managing choices and making moves. The author guides us through the different stages of the job search and application process, suggesting self-development and learning methods for defining career needs, whether full time, freelance or part time, as well as ways of assessing competencies and attributes in relation to the job market. In the second part of this book Angela Abell focuses on changing employer needs, 'the knowledge economy' and the future profile and skills of information professionals. Rossana Kendall, quoting numerous examples, offers empowering tools for creating space to think positively, for developing constructive dialogues and so managing negativity and change. She explores the underlying factors governing how we handle change and the other complexities of work and life, and their implications for careers. In the final chapter differing attitudes to change are explored by Liz Roberts, with particular emphasis on senior management roles, and the challenges and rewards they, or the option of downshifting, can bring. A series of case studies highlights different career dilemmas and explains how contrasting decisions might be justified.A full bibliography and list of useful journals, organizations and websites are also included. Aimed at middle management information professionals and those in the earlier part of their career, Your Career, Your Life will greatly stimulate career thinking as well as offering expert practical advice. Reading it will help the reader to clarify career plans and develop the skills and understanding to manage change effectively. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful General Help
This book will be helpful to people in various categories. Firstly, those wondering whether a career as sceintific researcher would suit them and what it would entail, secondly those charged with providing suitable career advice and, thirdly, existing researchers needing assistance or reassurance in connection with their work and prospects. As a result, I can see this book in many libraries, including high school and university libraries.

On the other hand, given the rapid nature of change in funding (and this book considers only the USA) and research practices, it would be wrong to imagine that it would be able to provide up to date and accurate information on every issue with which a researcher is likely to be concerned. It should be seen as a general guide rather than a specific one. It will be useful for my students here in Thailand since the career of researcher is not so well documented or even developed here and many aspire to study and work in western countries without much idea of what it would entail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excerpt of a review
"[T]he book takes the guesswork out of an academic life and environment. ... I highly recommend this book to every graduate student so that they are prepared for the academic calling and can make the most of it. I would further recommend this book to all established academicians so that they could have a better perspective on a graduate student, fellow, and a starting assistant professor and encourage them to become good members of the academic society. The book is priced such that a graduate student can afford to buy one, or perhaps their mentor may be generous enough to gift one."

2-0 out of 5 stars Little help here
Well, what can I say.It took a lot of deliberation before I decided to buy this book.I did get a recommendation from a colleague, but after reading some of the reviews, I was not so sure.Much of what the authors say is not just common sense, but almost trivial.I think the topic is also too general, trying to cover everything from a postdoc looking for a job, to an associate professor trying to get promoted to a full professor level.

What was particularly disappointing was the extremely abbreviated section on the process of getting a job.Granted that every university varies, but negotiating a position with good (access to) resources and support, good students and enough time to do research is probably the most critical stage of the whole process.Everything else is a direct result of this process. Yet disproportionately little time is spent on this subject. It is as if the authors assume everyone gets a job in one of the top ten universities, but at the same time they are still too confused about how to publish a paper, write/get a grant or interact with colleagues (junior and senior).

Focusing on NIH R01 as the only source of funding (granted this is intended for biomedical researchers), is also misguided. There are alternatives that researchers can explore, but many of them do not give as generous indirect costs as NIH or simply are smaller than your average NIH grant. So from your institution's point of view these grants do not really help you to get tenure, so maybe that is why the authors left them out.

Over all, this book really is not that helpful unless you are a complete beginner in this game. And then it is probably too early for you to worry about getting your R01 in Research Utopia U.I can think of better things to spend $40 on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will be useful for years to come
Finally, a book full of advice on the art of being an academic scientist! As a postdoc, I have already benefited from many of the sections, including the advice on grant writing, giving talks, and writing manuscripts. Also, the section on mentoring has helped me to be more efficient in directing the undergraduates working with me.I am sure I will consult this book many times in the future as I begin my job search and start my own lab.The book was fun to read as well as very practical.Definitely recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will prove ineffective
I was generous with just one star.In the real world of the stressful biomedical grant mill (Emory University being one such mill), this book will prove profoundly ineffective. And for several reasons.First, it is poorly conceived and written. Second, to my knowledge, Eckert has never been funded for a biomedical grant (in other words, her expertise is wishful thinking).Presently, she holds a staff position at the Emory School of Nursing. ... Product Description

" In 1976, Kentucky state legislator Mae Street Kidd successfully sponsored a resolution ratifying the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution. It was fitting that a black woman should initiate the state's formal repudiation of slavery; that it was Mrs. Kidd was all the more appropriate. Born in Millersburg, Kentucky, in 1904 to a black mother and a white father, Kidd grew up to be a striking woman with fair skin and light hair. Sometimes accused of trying to pass for white in a segregated society, Kidd felt that she was doing the opposite -- choosing to assert her black identity. Passing for Black is her story, in her own words, of how she lived in this racial limbo and the obstacles it presented. As a Kentucky woman of color during a pioneering period of minority and women's rights, Kidd seized every opportunity to get ahead. She attended a black boarding academy after high school and went on to become a successful businesswoman in the insurance and cosmetic industries in a time when few women, black or white, were able to compete in a male-dominated society. She also served with the American Red Cross in England during World War II. It was not until she was in her sixties that she turned to politics, sitting for seventeen years in the Kentucky General Assembly -- one of the few black women ever to do so -- where she crusaded vigorously for housing rights. Her story -- presented as oral history elicited and edited by Wade Hall -- provides an important benchmark in African American and women's studies and endures as a vital document in Kentucky history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent account related honsestly and candidly
Ienjoyed reading Mrs. Kidd's book. I am currently a returning student at Florida State University and read this account for a class I'm taking regarding Mental Health for Women and Minorities. Mrs. Kidd's account was so very well written that I can imagine her sweet and genteel voice. I can also envision her standing up for her constituional rights at moments in her life that challenged her values and belief systems.I reccommend all people read this moving account in order to reach a higher level of cultural sensitivity and understanding for another race (I am white), as well as a viewpoint froman elder citizen, and memories as well as experiences and achievementsfor a woman living in a world of male domination. Mrs. Street Kidd's recollections are moving and very enlightening. ... Read more
