5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I think this book offers really good advice and guidance for people entering or considering the HR career.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real guide
This book differs from the rest of the getting started in HR books. This book is not a how-to resource for running an HR department, but a real framework for pursuing an HR career. Most others sort of talk about what HR is and give generic advice for students. This book has some of that, but also looks at real-world people who by accident or design choose HR, or are chosen by it, further alon in their work life and need to build a career path in the discipline. Along with the content are chapter endin interviews with real, successful HR professionals that bring the subject of the chapter into focus.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book enables you to see the trees in the forest!
Every once in awhile, a book is crafted that helps a reader see the smaller picture in context of the larger picture. This is such a book. Jeanne Palmer does a terrific job at walking the reader through decision trees around HR career strategies and tactics. She makes it easy to understand the "who, what, when, where, why and hows"of the Human Resources world, and makes plain what is often seen as complicated or elusive. In my world of executive search, she has given me greater understanding ofthe HR professionals with whom we interface on a daily basis. I would recommend this book to anyone who works in the human capital industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a nutshell, this is a career map for HR professionals
This book provides inspiration and practical information for readers at almost any stage of their careers. It is about cultivating an HR career over time. The chapters examine core competencies and key characteristics and how to: tell the stories behind career choices and accomplishments; lay out and track an HR career plan; plan your next career move well in advance; build a powerful network; overcome career missteps; come to terms with what you can't change and mitigate hazards to career prospects; successfully engage in senior-level interviews; and prepare for unexpected changes that offer new opportunities. Includes interviews with senior HR executives that provide lessons learned and insights. Appendices offer a map of career paths linked with qualifications and a list of valuable websites. Viewing this book as a senior HR professional and consultant (co-founder, Stern & Associates, hrconsultant.com) I wish such a book was available to me when I was first getting started. A must read for every HR practitioner and those aspiring to be one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Career counselling for HR professionals
With so many HR professaionals helping others with their careers, this book enables such people to look after their own career through self assessment and interviews of successful people in HR.Surveying the HR landscape today, Jeanne Palmer enables you to map out your own career, assess what you need to get to your next goal, and how best to conduct yourself in acheiving it (including how to avoid common pitfalls and how to recovery from them). The Human Resource Professional's Career Guide is of particular help to those individuals who are at the beginning and all the way to the later stages of their career. For those who are at the end of their career or teach, it is an excellent tool for mentoring. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The book is okay.
The book gives you the inside look into human resources-roles,
certification, evolution of hr, and the practice. This book
is rather thin for its price and one part of the book that I really don't like is it tells you alot of info, but doesn't
explain why. Also, there is no info on graduate school for
the human resources program.I'm a career changer from technology and I'm still confused at the end of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars plenty of data
If you're the kind of person who wants more than just quotes from insiders (although this one has plenty of that too), and are looking for stats and figures to paint a picture for why you'd want to get into a given industry, then this is the guide you're looking for. I have read plenty of articles here and there on the HR industry, but this guide gives that extra layer of data that gives you a good idea of what's going on overall, where the industry is moving to and where you need to focus and improve in order to stay ahead of the curve and get into a company that will allow you to advance in your career. I've been doing HR/recruiting for a couple years now, for a small financial services firm. Now that i've read this guide, I feel that much more ready to move onto bigger and better, specifically to a larger firm in the same industry. I'm taking wetfeet's advice and enrolling in some business courses in order to back up my HR experience. I'm also glad to see the real people profiles and days in the life to better gauge if a larger firm is indeed the right place for me (i now think it is! and am more comfortable with the idea having read the guide).

5-0 out of 5 stars MBA and HR
This guide was extremely helpful in laying out the groundwork for my plan of attack in getting a job as an HR Manager at a top HR firm dealing in the IT industry. I am in final stages of interviewing and, with your advice, am really working my business administration and IT background as well as the HR-related courses I've taken over the past several months. It seems to be working very well! Fingers crossed, but I think I'll be getting an offer next week! Thanks! ... Read more

Description:
Although many of the principal milestones of current career research are of U.S. origin, the influence of European contributions slowly grows. Drastic changes of careers and career contexts surfacing in the early 1990s have renewed the interest in career issues. In addition, new concepts such as the boundaryless career propelled the European career discourse and triggered career studies in Europe. Despite the difficulty to give a comprehensive picture because of the differences within Europe and the many possible measures of comparison, this paper identifies three major characteristics of European career research and practice: (1) Substantial heterogeneity in terms of career practice; (2) The use of theoretical concepts usually coming from social sciences in career research; (3) The emphasis on social structures in conceptualizing influencing factors of career. After identifying and explaining these characteristics, the paper discusses their implications for human resource management research and practice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful
This book really gives a great in depth idea of the broad spectrum of Human Resources. The only downfall I personally found was that the book seems to be a little disorganized. For example, the book didn't hit the same aspects for every HR position mentioned in each section.Regardless, by the end of the book every topic was well covered. ... Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A907673. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Turnover of the Air Force civil engineering (CE) officers is becoming increasingly important, as levels of CE Captains consistently decreases. Allenand Katz (1986) identified three career orientations of engineers based on their job preference-project, professional, and management engineers. Shepard (1958)suggested a dual-ladder promotion system to meet the cancer desires of technical and management workers. Additional research has proposed "desired" HumanResource Management (HRM) practices to facilitate the retention of each type ofcareer-based engineer (Lee and Maurer, 1997). In an effort to determine if these career orientations, along with Air Force HRM practices, were linked todeclining retention, a survey was sent to 927 CE company grade officers (CGO) to measure these and other variables of interest including career satisfaction, perceived organizational support and participant's intent to remain in the AirForce. Results of the analysis revealed 50 percent of respondents weremanagement oriented, 37 percent were project oriented, and 13 percent professional oriented. Management oriented CE officers reported higher levels of career satisfaction and intent to remain in the Air Force than the other twoorientations. Additional findings suggest that career orientation and HRMpractices are important considerations for improving the retention of Air ForceCE CGOs. ... Read more
