This book is really helpful when trying to explain to middle school students the wide variety of engineering careers, what each career entails, and the level of education they will need, and the amount of money they can expect to make.Engineering is becoming a huge educational initiative in the U.S.This book is a helpful tool.

Good Info for Graduating Seniors
My daughter is considering majoring in engineering but her high school doesn't offer any classes or information about it.This book has been very revealing to her and me regarding careers in engineering.It is written by a woman too so it includes her experiences in a male dominated field.

To much like a search engine
First off, let me say that if you are a young woman in high school this is certainly worth your time reading, because that is basically who this book was written for. For the most part, this book does give the reader the basics of what engineering offers, but I think the book would have been more effective and entertaining if she either tried to limit her topics or increased the length of the book. I find that most of the book starts off interesting, gives you a vague glimpse and then spends the next 130 pages telling you where to go if you want to know anything about the topic, I thought that was the whole purpose of buying this book in the first place. In my opinion, this book is like Raymond Landis' " Studying Engineering"( a book I did enjoy), without the depth. If you're looking for a book that's written with junior high-schoolers in mind, this book will give them a starting point with which to explore their interest in engineering.

great reading
This book was writen not of necessity but of the desire to share the experience by the person who apparently does not need neither the fame nor the money. I read it four years ago, enjoyed it immensely, recalled it on numerous occasions and buying another copy right now to give as a present to an engineering major student.

Great book
I first read this book in 1996. It served me with a good survey of the road ahead. Now, 12 years later, the advice is as fresh as it was then. If you are just starting out in engineering, this book can give you a view of different paths to take and also help you avoid pitfalls.

Stories from the Front Lines
Mr. Kamm's book is a collection of wisdom, ideas, and strategies for the engineer and entrepreneur. He shares stories of success, setbacks, and innovation. I read the book some years ago, but the reason I most enjoy it now is when considering difficuties I am going through in my own career. Like most professions engineering will bring you frustrations as well as triumphs, and I enjoy seeing how a fellow designer delt with close-minded managers, tight deadlines, small budgets, and took blows as well as wins. In issues both social and technical, the author has fun telling stories of his career, and may prepare you for challenges you haven't thought of yet!

Essential for an academic job search
In today's competitive job market, it is absolutely essential to have a book that will guide candidates through the academic job searching process. An excellent overview
I was very pleased with this purchase. Reis gives a great overview of academia and the US university system. He make lots of points I hadn't thought of as well as some very sage comments on how education should be approached. The main drawback of the book is that it is a little outdated - for example he suggests the new idea of looking for job postings on a thing called the World Wide Web!

Great Book, very high level
This is a GREAT book for people just feeling out the field of entertainment engineering. The author does a good job of explaining the industry and the many positive challenges that are part of theme park engineering and attraction design. Some great practical examples. For those interested in Coaster design, this book has a chapter just for that discipline. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is just because of how short it is. For me, I felt it could have used some more content. But I am sure for many - it is the perfect length. A great introductory read!

It had some helpful and interesting facts in there but not that amazing of a book. The reason I gave it 4 stars is b/c it has an appendix full of contact info for all the major coaster manufacturers and theme park design companies (alot do not work though :S)

Good Handbook for Counselors and Pre-Engineers
This book is the cheering section for hish school physics teachers to encourage students to go into engineering.It uses the amusement park as a model to showcase the different disciplines within engineering.There is a good list of good reading, manufacturers, trade magazines, and the like.

Okay book--too little for the money though--great appendix
I am a high school student looking forward to some sort of structural/civil engineering career, and a career in the amusement industry sounded really great, so when I found this book I was really excited. A week later, I got it in the mail, and was dissappointed. The book seems weakly set-up and organized, and too generalized when it shouldn't be, and way to specific in some spots. One chapter, to my surprise, had several pages just on how to build a model of a rollercoaster! Interesting, nevertheless, but in a childrens' book about wolves or something, would you have a chapter about collecting feces samples? I am not going to put this book down too far, though. The appendix is the most helpful part, with reccomended reading and all sorts of info (web sites and e-mail even) about most entertainment industry manufacturers, designers, etc., etc... It was good, but gave a too generalized view of the industry, I think, and not enough about how to get into it. Took me about a couple of hours of easy reading to finish it--if that says anything. ... Read more

Very Helpful
Just about everything you would want to know to study engineering. Great motivation. Kind of like the movie Gattaca in that it assures you that drive and dedication are really the most important part of success. Also has specifics such as salaries and classroom success strategies.

Just what every engineering student needs
I failed my first semester and during the winter break i ordered this book. I'm not even completely finished but I can already tell you that now I feel more motivated to earn my engineering degree. This book really does a good job at teaching you how to succeed and I don't know how anyone can succeed without reading this book. I highly recommend it.

An Honest, Competent Piece of Work
If a recent engineer with his bachelor's degree came to me for a job with this book in tow I would be impressed.I would advise him to continue to mine the book for nuggets as he advanced in his career.Practicing engineers who are shadowed, engineers with interns and engineers doing bring-your-child-to-work presentations would get ideas from this book to pass on to their subjects.I would recommend this book to the parents of high school and middle school children who do well in math and science.I might be ambivalent about this book if I had to study it for a test because it is rather tedious.To browse is another story.

It seems so natural for engineering to be studied in a historical and political economic context.If it were, it would be enlightening and much less grueling than it needs to be in relation to the actual practice of engineering in industry.This would prepare the engineer to be proactive in a way that a focus on technology alone cannot do.We say that change is the one thing that is constant but we do not prepare the engineer for change that is driven by politics and economics.Consider globalization.The transfer of production to India and China is one aspect of globalization.It moves design, applications and hotline support to these countries as well where engineers are paid $10K to $15K a year. There is no way U.S. engineers can increase their productivity 5 fold and more to be competitive with this.With laptops, cell phones and Internet we are already chained to work 24/7. We are smart guys and gals but we do not have influences of liberal education to deal with this issue in an enlightened manner."Studying Engineering" plays it safe for not challenging the context of technical lectures, what could be done in the interstitial space that compliments technology and makes it more interesting and understandable.It deals with what successful engineering students have always done- focus on academics, limit purely social activity and use discretionary time to take advantage of the university community to practice being a professional.I am mindful that the words honest and competent are generous for a book that puts the onus on the student alone and does not consider that maybe the narrow and excruciatingly boring presentation of technology in the classroom is a problem.Compared to other books of its kind, however, "Studying Engineering" is a keeper for what it does well.

true, this book doesn't give much info on the technical aspect of engineering, and it doesn't claim to.This book is designed to help students get ready to confront the very rigorours road of becoming an engineer.2 out of every 3 students that are engineering majors in college do not accomplish their goals.This book attempts to explain why and deal with that issue.It succeeds, it offers study skill and time management tools that would benifit any student in whatever dicipline.I highly reccomend this book, unless you have perfect time management skills and flawless study habits.This book might look silly to some, but I'm sure if it would have been implented in more colleges years ago that more students would have graduated from engineering school.

A companion for bioengineering/biotechnology students and engineers
Hello,

I am studying a bioengineering Master at EPFL in Switzerland.

I found this book really helpful and giving a broad preview of the spectrum of different professions of the field. This kind of information is kind of hard to get without being able to meet the specialists. This book offer such information.

I also liked very much the parts where the ethics, vision and goals of bioengineering are explored by the writers. It gives a wider perspective of the "why" of bioengineering and its usefulness for society.

To me, this book is a masterpiece and I intend to read it again along my career from time to time.

As said in the title, I recommend it to bioengineers and biotechnologists as a mirror on their field. Such a mirror usually ones gets only after 10 years or so of experiences and encounters.

not much information
i bought this book thinking it would give me more information than what i could find on the internet.however, there wasn't really anything in here that i hadn't already read.

also, the salary information in the mechanical engineering section seems very low, at least compared to other things i've read, as well i've engineers i've talked to.

A hit all round with children ages 5-9
