Product Description
If you thought shorthand was difficult to learn, this book will change your mind. Inthese few pages the art of shorthand has been distilled into a simple skill anyone canlearn. Fast writing is an essential skill for everyone who needs to taken notes.

This is the primary textbook of the Tabor method of scriptshorthand for professional use - for journalists, reporters, secretaries and officepersonnel.

This level uses simplified longhand letters; these arevery easy to learn as they are all associated with, and derived from the writer's ownfamiliar handwriting. Each letter is simplified to a single recognisable pen-stroke. Themethod is thus much easier and quicker to learn than the older geometric shorthandsystems, but is equally fast to write.

After years of researchthe theory has been reduced to a minimum. The method is based on two fundamentalprinciples and three specific abbreviating rules. The latter deal with the sounds of Tand D, R and L. Three frequently occurring prefix groups are presented together withsome half-dozen common suffix groups. All these are based on familiar writing practiceand are easy to remember. The textbook is designed for either self-study or classroomteaching. There are two parts; 1. Theory, and 2. Reading and writing practice.

The simplicity of the system will enable you to write shorthandafter only a few hours and to write it as fast as the older geometric systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Third Edition and Fourth Will Be Better
As co-author I have found the MANAGEMENT text for the CERTIFIEDPROFESSIONAL SECRETARY EXAMINATION REVIEW SERIES, published by PrenticeHall to be helpful for college students and office professionals who arenot necessarily seeking CPS certification. The fourth edition is beingpublished now and should be out within a few weeks.

Excellent progress isbeing made in updating the fourth edition to include management tipsrelated to electronic communication, e-commerce, and other technologicaldevelopments.Key business and management concepts are covered in afriendly, understandable manner in both editions.

I have used thesechapters with my college students, especially those on leadership, conflictmanagement, and organizational behavior. This is a very useful book to haveas a supplement but is not designed as a replacement for excellentmanagement and organizational behavior principles texts written by manyauthors.

Secretaries, students, and administrative assistants who haven'tconsidered seeking the CPS rating might do so.The three-part examinationis administered two times a year, November and May, at various sitesthroughout the country as well as in overseas education centers.

I amthrilled to have worked with Dr. Betty Schroeder, Northern IllinoisUniversity on the Management book.Dr. Schroeder is the series editor andOffice Systems and Administration,Finance and Business Law, andManagement)published by Prentice Hall and endorsed by the InternationalAssociation for Administrative Professionals, formerly ProfessionalSecretaries International. Dr. Schroeder is a delightful co-author andsuperb editor.

Many of my college students and associates have sugestedthat Management be placed in libraries and other public places. The text isan excellent reference to consult for varied management issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars good solid self-teach book
I've worked with several beginning French books, and this is the best by far--at least for someone with my background and learning patterns. It might be a bit tough if you don't have any background whatsoever in any romance language, but it seems to me that learning a language always takes a lot more work than the ads for books often claim.Work methodically through this book and you'll have a good solid base upon which to build when you go to France or start reading French books and newspapers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good and no more "Basic" than TY's French Grammar
I really got sucked into buying several of the TY French books at the same time, mostly due to their appearance and scanning them in the bookstore. This title is the only one I can recommend. It is much better than the TY French Grammar; as a reviewer of that book pointed out, that book has a very skimpy index and odd organization that make it hard to look up a topic. This book, while I wish it went for less "chatty" chapter titles (e.g., "articles" instead of "How to say 'the'")does have a logical organization.Unfortunately, it has no index at all, so it works better as a chapter by chapter course than as a reference, but I found the way the topics were presented to be logical and comprehensible.Good tips on approaching a language as well, such as telling you not to get bogged down when a foreign language doesn't follow the same patterns or idioms your native tongue does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good refresher!
I checked this book out of the library in preparation for an upcoming trip to Paris. It is probably too compact for entry level learning for most people. But I last took a French course in 1970, and I have never had the opportunity to use the language since then.I found the book to be an excellent refresher text and will be going to Paris with a lot more confidence.I have just ordered a copy for myself.

2-0 out of 5 stars are you a teacher?
Titles do not lie. This is book is truely only for those who want BASIC and can teach themselves. If you`re like me and need things explained several times this book is good since you can reread it.But at the sametime with very few examples, if you don`t understand it the first time, chances are you`re not going to understand it by rereading the same thingseveral times. Know your learning patterns before you buy this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Develop Solid Research Skills With This Book!
Business people and hobbyists alike have found the Internet to be a goldmine of a place for buying and selling, marketing and promoting, and for gathering and sharing information. There is much to search for online but not everyone has the time and resources available to conduct adequate research. D.A. Smith-Hemphill has written CyberAssistant: How to Use the Internet to Get More Done in Less Time to help other members of the online community to make the most effective use of the time and resources they do have.

The book focuses primarily upon getting set up with an online account and computer equipment, developing research methodology, and making use of the navigational tools people should be using for their searches. Smith-Hemphill discusses how to search for ISP services, setting up browsers and computer equipment, getting along with others, using search engines, making use of the newsgroups and discussion groups, tapping into specialized databases, and how we should go about looking for information.

Smith-Hemphill takes netiquette seriously and her treatment reflects a high standard of behavior still found lacking online. She points out that because we communicate online electronically, people we interact with know us only by how we communicate with them using a mouse and keyboard. Readers will learn how to make good impressions the first time and every time when replying to e-mail, participating in online discussions, following respectable acceptable use policies, correct spelling and use of grammar, our choice of words, and other proper key strokes.

Search engines play an important role in conducting online research. Smith-Hemphill discusses use of the major search engines that help us find the information we look for. Selection of key words, phrases, and other character strings are among the topics covered. A selection of other helpful Websites will assist readers to track down essential information online and help them develop solid research skills.

One fascinating aspect about this book is worth mentioning. Smith-Hemphill encourages her readers to learn from their online research experiences. The documenting of various research methods, procedures, and other helpful tricks and tips can go a long way to enhance our long-range effectiveness - and careers. This is an important process every member of the online community should learn to do!

The book reads easy and is highly informative. The average business owner, employee, researcher, student, and hobbyist will find it very helpful and easy to follow. This book would make a great addition to any business, classroom, and library environment with online connectivity. This is a great gift idea. Ideal for beginners!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for kids too!
After typing in too many silly jokes for my 7 yr old at various websites, I bought this book to help her learn typing. It's a great book, lessons are good, and instructions are limited to what is needed. None of the psychobabble I found in other books. This just teaches the right fingers for each key, correct posture and gets on with the actual lesson.I have only used the lessons with my kid, not the accompanying software.
