Product Description

The literature on the late effects of cancer treatment is widely scattered in different journals since all major organ systems are affected and management is based on a variety of medical and surgical treatments. The aim of "ALERT – Adverse Late Effects of Cancer Treatment" is to offer a coherent multidisciplinary approach to the care of cancer survivors. Volume 1 of this two-volume work focuses on the general concepts and principles relevant to late effects and on the dynamic interplay of molecular, cytologic and histopathologic events that lead to altered physiologic and metabolic functions and their clinical manifestations. Chapters are also included on legal issues, economic aspects, nursing, psychological issues and quality of life. It is anticipated that this textbook will become the gold standard in providing information on the late effects of cancer treatment and that, in its digitized form, it will be referenced in cancer survivorship guidelines.

Breast cancer is the major cancer affecting women in the UK, and screening by mammography provides an opportunity to significantly reduce mortality from the disease. The National Breast Screening Programme began in 1988 and is being phased in over a three year period. As has clearly been demonstrated with cervical cancer screening, the active involvement of GPs and their staff is essential in obtaining high levels of the programme's acceptance. This title in the "Practical Guides for General Practice" series includes brief introductory sections on the epidemiology, pathology and early diagnosis of breast cancer. This is followed by a detailed description of the organization and administration of the screening programme and a section on providing information to women. Product Description
I have taken my personal experience in practice along with the details of treatment of patient together with published literature and proposed a testable theory of breast cancer. The lack of a theory of cancer and especially breast cancer has made treatment difficult and empirical.

The book is divided into four parts. The first part discusses iodine. From published facts, we can arrive at a proposal that iodine could be the first phase of a two phase cancer defence system. It appears that iodine in the extra-cellular fluid outside of the cells is the main surveillance system for abnormal cells. Iodine also triggers the natural death of normal cells in the body. There are many cells types in the body undergoing a natural death. For example some of the cells in the stomach have lives of only 2-3 days. The name of this process is apoptosis.

Carefully documented descriptions of the cancer process at different places in the body reveals most cancers have similar stages through which it passes. The cancers are not really cancer until the cells start to move by invasion through the nearby connective tissue. Cells develop abnormalities for a variety of reasons and can continue to become abnormal all the way up through atypical cells and to carcinoma in situ. Carcinoma in situ is the dividing line between the two phases of cancer development. Iodine in correct doses will reverse all of the changes up to and including the carcinoma in situ.

The thyroid hormone controls connective tissue function. So connective tissue around organs forms a structural biological barrier to the spread of cancer. Cancer spread to distant organs only develops in the connective tissue of those organs. Therefore, if the connective tissue defence is not strong then the cancerous cell from a distant site can land there and grow. If however the thyroid hormone level in the connective tissue is high enough then the connective tissue will perform its normal defence duties and not allow the cancer cell to enter it and develop.

Using these principles, fibrocystic disease and breast cancer become more understandable. Supplemental iodine in the correct doses will remove all lesions from carcinoma in situ back to just an abnormal cell by triggering death of these cells by apoptosis. Spread of cancer cells in the connective tissue can be arrested by adequate treatment with thyroid hormone to strengthen the connective tissue barrier.

My experience with patients using this approach so far has been successful. The principles are that there are two phases to cancer one controlled by iodine and the other by thyroid hormone. Thus the book deals with the prevention and survival of breast cancer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
No need to repeat points made by others. This book is accurate and very informative. For over 15 years I've researched human iodine consumption in relation to fibrous cysts and other health issues and this book sums it all up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thought-provoking book!
I just read the opening chapter and the last chapter titled "Breast Cancer," and I plan to read the rest tonight and tomorrow. I was very impressed with the information! And I hope that the medical profession will take note!

Also, I would like to highly recommend visiting the website: earthclinic.com (which is how I found out about this book). People from the U.S. and other countries have emailed in their experiences with natural remedies...and one of the remedies listed on earthclinic is using iodine.

On the site are tabs for "Remedies" (A-Z that show you all the uses for a particular remedy) and there is a tab for ailments (A-Z that list all the ailments...and what remedies people are using for each ailment. And there is a tab for pets (that includes remedies and ailments--because it is very important to take care of pets, too).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
As a RN, Medical Laboratory Technologist and breast cancer survivor, I literally read this volume in one sitting. At times I found it to be a bit technical or maybe it is just that my organic chemistry and cellular biology courses were some 30 years ago.Dr. Derry does specifically state that this is his theory based on his understanding of the current literature.I do agree that most of us are iodine deficient. One thing I have noticed in talking with other breast cancer survivors is that a largemajority of us have both breast cancer and hypothyroid.Far too many for it to be statistical coincidence.Of the women I know who have had or have breast cancer at least 50% also carry a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and or fibromyalgia.I also have the fibromyalgia diagnosis and wonder how much of this is actually hypothyroid.I feel strongly enough about Dr. Derry's theory that I have begun taking supplemental iodine.I would recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about either thyroid function or breast cancer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed to say the least
Not at all what I expected.Hard to read and very vague. No real directions and lots of technical bull that left me scratching my head.
I would not recommend it at all.The title is very misleading. It did not present any how to's or instructions like the title implies.A waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proposes Iodine as Prevention and Treatment for Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer and Iodine by David Derry MD PhD,is a unique 100 page volume which presents the academic case for iodine as prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The book should be handed out freely during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.Although written for the lay reader, it should be required reading for all medical students, breast surgeons, mammographers, breast cancer oncologists and any doctor who orders mammograms.

With ten pages of medical references including the work of B A Eskin and W R Ghent, Dr. Derry discloses the remarkable connection between iodine deficiency, fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer. Iodine's anti-cancer activity lies in its control of apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

Derry presents case studies complete with surgical pathology confirmation showing regression of both fibrocystic breast disease and carcinoma-in-situ breast cancer with iodine treatment. He also presents a case report case of infiltrating breast cancer involving the skin which regressed after prolonged application of topical Lugol's iodine solution.

I can report from the experience of my own family members that iodine supplementation causes regression of fibrocystic breast disease.

Derry's ideas in the book could be easily revised into an NIH grant proposal to research and confirm the role of iodine. To do so would advance the nation's health and be a great public service.Iodine is safe, inexpensive and readily available without a prescription.A US policy of iodine supplementation matching the Japanese dietary intake of iodine could very well be our best preventive measure against breast cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Having my own battle with carcinoma, I was in search of information. This book has provided it in spades! With no hidden agendas, fads or attempts at selling. Just good, solid, scientific information, clearly presented. Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linda Hayes, Patient
I am currently a breast cancer patient and found Dr. Frank's book to be exactly what I needed to read. His matter-of-fact descriptions of what cancer is, how it is treated, what the various cancer drugs do and how they affect the human body were easily understandable by a layperson such as myself. Reading this book put my treatment and my disease into great perspective - I only wish I had had the book at the beginning of my treatment. I found it to be very enlightening and it enabled me to comprehend what was happening to my body and my mind as I moved through my cancer journey. I urge everyone who has begun their own "walk through the fire" and who are living with the day-to-day effects of cancer to go out and get themselves a copy of this book for themselves and also for their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arming Yourself with Knowledge
I am a 10-year survivor with multiple myeloma. I just wish when I was first diagnosed my doctor handed me a book like this. I was told I had perhaps six months to live and to "get my affairs in order." I was scared silly. Over the ensuing months, going to various specialists, I began to arm myself with knowledge about my specific kind of cancer, my stage of disease, treatment options, side effects and so on. Dr. Frank makes the point that today there are three general areas of treatment--surgery, radiology and chemo, but that within these areas are all kinds of byways and judgments. Here finally is a primer that explains in layman terms the very challenging options open to patients (and caregivers). After reading this book you will still have plenty of questions for your oncologist but at least you will know where to start.Andrew Jaffe, New Canaan, CT

5-0 out of 5 stars Great oncology resource for patients and providers
Dr. Frank's book is written with clear strategy and great depth of information. The cancer patient will find it easy to comprehend; and the health care provider will find it to be a great resource to add to the office bookshelf.
As an oncology nurse practitioner I often reference Dr. Frank's book when I am teaching or counseling a cancer patient. The book is divided into two parts that each include four sections: Exposing Cancer and Attacking Cancer. The sections include specific cancers, staging/curability, the "why" of cancer development, metastasis and treatment, and survival.
Hope is woven through the knowledge which helps relieve the fear and anxiety that come with the diagnosis of cancer.
I highly recommend this book to the cancer patient, the family, and the many health care providers caring for the oncology patient. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
The book was very informative and helpful with the information that I was looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Practical, more information than most doctors provide
This book has detailed information that can be overwhelming for those that have diagnoses that are not very early breast cancer. However, if you want to know everything and have a lot of information, you will appreciate this book for all of its content. There is a lot of useful information. If you don't want end of life issues at this time, don't go there with this book, because it covers a lot of territory. For me, parts of this book were scary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a great book if you've just finished treatment for breast cancer. After spending a whole year in and out of hospital with operations, chemo and radiotherapy I needed some advice on how to get back to living a normal life but also advice on what I could do to combat a return of the cancer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated
There's a lot of good information in this book...for 1998.Breast cancer treatment and survival has come a long way since then; this book should reflect that. Also, was surprised at how much stuff they covered that *wasn't* post-treatment.A lot of what this book covered was in other books for the newly diagnosed and those going through treatment -- I wanted more about actual life after treatment, not more recaps of breast reconstruction.

Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best for Metastatic Information!
I've been reading and researching breast cancer on and off for 4 years.A year ago my breast cancer metasticized, and it's hard to find honest information (or any information) about metastatic disease. The title to this book is misleading, because it doesn't mention the fantastic, updated metastatic information. It is by far the most comprehensive, readable treatment of this I've found.I'm ordering several copies to give away. ... Each short, digestible chapter includes useful and encouraging suggestions for how to enhance the quality of life for those with cancer and ultimately turn cancer treatment into a constructive and life-affirming experience for both patient and caregiver.

Take time to collect pebbles and search for four-leaf clovers. Inspire your patient’s appetite with a variety of menu options. Learn to dance. Keep a calendar of medications and treatment appointments. Steve Reed’s suggestions and instructions for caregivers range from the practical to the whimsical and silly. Few know better than Reed, who has been a caregiver to seven family members, the serious and overwhelming nature of a caregiver’s duties. But no one knows better than he how to infuse even the most dire circumstances with humor and joy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pebbling The Walk
When I became a caregiver for my best friend, who was to undergo a Stem Cell Transplant for leukemia, I looked for a book like Pebbling The Walk, but couldn't find one. The only advice I had received for my journey as a cancer caregiver was from a Social Worker at the hospital, who said: "Don't burn yourself out."

After eight hard months of battling his cancer together, my friend passed away. I was such a physical and emotional wreck, that I became seriously ill.I spent a month in Critical Care and another month in a rehab hospital learning to walk and talk again. I was a major care receiver for many months.

Steve Reed's advice is currently assisting me with a friend who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I had found his book in my church library.

Mr. Reed has spoken to my heart, as well as to my head, by honestly explaining how he felt as a caregiver. I am able to relate to his fear, hope, anger and frustration.I agree with him that an undying sense of humor is the most important life preserver of all, for both patient and caregiver.

His simple writing style, usable "tips" and common sense approach enable those undertaking the formidable task of cancer caregiving, to survive and even thrive.

"Pebbling The Walk" is like a friend that you can call in the middle of the night and tell anything to. Steve Reed has "been there" before us and walks hand in hand with us as we offer love and support to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential book for all caregivers!
This is a funny, inspiring, and beautifully written book you will want to share with everyone, especially those facing the challenging times of taking care of a loved one. Steve Reed shares his amazing personal experiences as a family caregiver in a totally honest, personal, and jargon-free way that makes you feel you have a friend going through the process with you. Without ever shying away from the difficult realities that face the seriously ill and their families, he helps bring out the joy in everyday moments that each of us, no matter what the circumstances, can continue to experience. I spent most of last year helping my mom during her cancer treatments, and found this was exactly the book I needed to keep all of us going strong. I can't wait to share it with others who need the same encouragement! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My immune system booster!
I was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in July 2000. After reading and hearing about the dismal survival statistics, I became extremely distressed and upset.A few months later, I discovered 'Feather'.This book boosted my immune system! It is informative, encouraging, humorous, and best of all, human.Barbara's story is certainly worth telling.I retell it often. My copy gets revisited on those sad and down days - a source of encouragement that helps me stay happy and strong.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational guide to living with ovarian cancer.
Once my mother was diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer, I began to learn about this terrible disease.

Of all the books and internet sites I found, this little paperback is among the best. Brief, authoritative and written by a long-term suvivor. It gives you the good, the bad and ugly about treatment options and the disease with an upbeat undercurrent that science and medicine is becoming more successful in treating ovarian cancer.

The author wrote this book from the victims perspective, which makes it a great introductory tome for anyone just diagnosed with this vicious disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars "EXCELLENT" UPLIFTING FEATHER IN MY WIG
This book that was written by an R.N. who experienced all of the Ovarian Cancer Disease and has indicated humor, positive attitude towards beating this "Beast".It's a must read book to make your day that is filled with laughter and a determined feeling of getting better each and every day.The review with one star is obviously a person who did not read the entire book and I challenge her to read it in its entirety and guarantee that she will love the book when finished!I absolutely loved the book and found so much healing in reading it myself. For I am also an Ovarian Cancer Survivor of two years and going strong.Godbless you Barbara...

1-0 out of 5 stars It upset my mother
I bought this book for my mother, who is currently battling ovarian cancer. I bought it to inspire her, and let her know that there are survivors out there. Well, the introduction was written to dramatize the book. It went on and on about how few people survive ovarian cancer (not true!!) and what a miracle it was that the writer survived. Consequently, my mother got extremely depressed. She never read the whole book because the introduction upset her so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!
I got this book for my mom who's recently been diagnosed with cancer.Ipicked it up this afternoon and didn't put it done until I was finished. What an inspiration! Just what I needed after a long week of discouragingnews and facing grim statistics. The author was cured of Stage III OvarianCancer and tells how she battled the disease and won.Nothing"hokey" or "alternative" about it--unless you considermeditation, prayer, visualization, and POSITIVE thinking "hokey." This is an EXCELLENT book, surely it's a "must-have" for anyonefacing this disease.

AN UPDATE 01/18/09: My mother is now a 9-year cancer survivor from stage 3 ovarian cancer. At the time of her surgery & diagnosis, her surgeon said it was the most advanced & aggressive case he'd ever seen, and gave her a very dire prognosis.Even though my mom didn't read the book (she was afraid it would bring her "down"), it was a lifeline for me, and set in motion a different attitude and way of looking at what she was going through. My mom focused on gratitude and all the positive things in her life (and viewed the cancer and treatment as a minor inconvenience, a pesky little fly to be swatted away). The book gave me the wisdom to view her perspective NOT as denial, but as a very real and effective way to live her life and "treat" her illness. I'm very grateful for this little book which came along at just the right time for me, and I HIGHLY recommend it! ... Read more
