5-0 out of 5 stars great
The book I recieved was in perfert condition. I've already tried a couple of recipes, which I enjoyed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is a GREAT book.It would be the most helpful for a cancer patient at the beginning of treatment, as it gives very helpful tips, advice, and things to be prepared for during chemo or radiation. I didn't get this book until after six months of chemo and had to learn about much of the book's recommendations on my own. Even so the recipes are very helpful, mostly healthy and easy, and divided into specific areas of treatment effects. I recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Living with Cancer Cookbook
Have always loved Betty Crocker, this book is fantastic with the simple, tasty and nutritious recipes.Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked this
As the spouse of someone undergoing treatment for cancer this cookbook helped me to feel like I was helping. All I can do is try to prepare meals for him and this gave me a lot of tips and tricks to do that as well as I could.
It's got a lot of nutrition information, which is useful to anybody that cares about that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information and cookbook for patients whom are new to the world of cancer
The world of cancer is so diverse and this cookbook covers alot of information and advise. We have found out that our faith in God, good nutrition and a possitive outlook is critical when being treated for cancer. This book is a must as it deals with the side effects of the treatment and gives you specialized recipes to help you deal with your everyday life. Thank You Betty Crocker!!

Product Description
This book is the definitive account of how private citizens, led by Mary Lasker, Sidney Farber, Laurence Rockefeller, Benno Schmidt, and Ann Landers, persuaded Congress to enact the “War on Cancer” legislation; how Senator Edward Kennedy championed the cause in the US Senate; how Rep. Paul Rogers brokered a compromise that kept the National Cancer Institute within the National Institutes of Health; and how President Richard Nixon embraced the legislation even though he had earlier proposed to cut the cancer research budget. In the wave of technological enthusiasm from putting a man on the moon, the account documents the exaggerated claims for cancer research advanced by advocates of the legislation and the sober evaluation by the scientific community of prospects for a cure for cancer. The 1971 National Cancer Act set the stage for major expansion of federal financing of cancer research. ... Read more

Product Description

John Hallenborg did get tested for prostate cancer and is fully recovered today, thanks to "the healing processes of time, a great doctor, and loving family and friends." Life, Sex, and Prostate Cancer Surgery: How One Man Healed and Was Made Whole is his story.

Hallenborg at last found a way to both medical and emotional well-being. With sardonic humor and psychological acuity, he tells of his experiences and feelings while dealing with "the big C"— the physical toll of the treatment, the fears of its effect on his sex life, and the other diseases that intruded along the way. Life, Sex, and Prostate Cancer Surgery is often graphic, always unflinching, sometimes hilarious, and ultimately uplifting. For anyone facing prostate cancer themselves or involved in the life of someone who is, it offers helpful information and hard-earned reasons for hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Insightful, funny, candid, informative and life affirming, this book is a must-read for any man (and the people who love him) who is facing prostate cancer, or may be avoiding being checked for it.The human understanding, wit and wisdom found in this book were not easily come by, but were obviously earned by the author through his experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Friend Who's Gone Through It
You're not likely to pick up this book unless you -- or someone you love -- has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. At this point, when you are filled with panic, confusion and fear, it's nice to have a friend who can hold your hand and support you through the process. John Hallenborg can be that friend.

Life, Sex and Prostate Surgery: How One Man Healed and Was Made Whole contains a lot of pertinent medical information on prostate cancer, but that isn't the principle value of the book. Instead, the author offers an unblinkingly honest personal account of his own experience, answering many of your most intimate questions along the way. At a difficult time, when prostate cancer confronts you, it's good to have the support of someone who has been there -- and survived and thrived. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars for older children
I found this book very educational for myself, but I bought it for my 3 yr. old thinking it would help him understand Grandma's cancer. It said for 4-8 yrs. but it was too detailed for him. I ended up passing it on to my 8 yr. nephew who gained from it. so if you have a child under 8 it is not the right book for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conversational, easy to read and discuss
Cancer is scary for adults to deal with and can be even more so for kids! It affects the entire family, not just the person with cancer. This book not only addresses this feature but presents questions and answers in a clear, easy to understand, conversational-type way. If you or anyone you know is in a situation that even resembles this, I highly recommend this book to help get you started having 'that conversation' with the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nana, What's Cancer?
A must-have book for curious kids in general. The authors' target audience is mainly the young crowd whose member of their families or friends suffer from this devastating disease. However, as I read on, I found more precious gems.Besides explaining the technicality and details of cancer, the authors tackle our emotions and bring about the awareness of people in our surroundings.Shennen Bersani depicted each scene with exceptional charm and to a great detail in facial expression as well as the color realism.Together, the authors and illustrator also direct our attention to the survivors and their families and friends; how to cheer them up on daily basis, and how little things you do can make a great difference.Fead, a patient and a survivor, alerted us that we should voice out to the lawmakers how they can be actively involved in saving many lives.Though this book may seem long to some young readers, I read a few chapters at a time with my seven-year-old.We paused and pondered from time to time imagining ourselves in their shoes. It is a great gift that teaches many life lessons.

Product Description

Cancer Survivor Sharon Parker Is on a Mission.

Sharon Parker thought she had a bad case of allergies. But as time went on, she felt instinctively that allergies were not the problem. Sharon asked for a chest x-ray. The x-ray results led to more tests and confirmed her worst fears. She had cancer. As if that news weren’t bad enough, Sharon soon learned that she had two separate cancers—Hodgkin’s Disease and thyroid cancer.

Determined to fight the diseases that threatened her life, Sharon sought out Dr. Andre Goy, internationally known hematologist oncologist at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Thanks to his expertise and treatment, she is alive.

Now, in her memoir, Look Out Cancer, Here I Come, Sharon Parker tells her own story of survival and draws from her experience to offer encouragement to others. Among the advice she shares:

•  Follow your instincts to get more tests. People are misdiagnosed everyday.
•  Don’t be afraid to ask questions of health professionals.
•  During treatment, surround yourself with positive people.
•  Focus on today and plan for tomorrow.
•  Don’t underestimate the power of caregivers and those who offer help.

Today, Sharon’s mission is raising money for lymphoma research through her book and through the Life Lover Foundation, which she founded.

This "celebration of food, friends, and healthy living"follows the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations of eating 5 or moreservings of fruit and vegetables, 6 to 10 servings of grain foods, and2 to 3 servings of protein foods daily, and limiting fats andsweets. The recipes are low in fat, high in nutrition, and ofteninventive. "Tapioca Fruit Pudding" is made with orange juice andvanilla yogurt instead of milk and eggs. "Stuffed Shells with Beef andTomato Sauce" has only one-half pound of lean ground beef for 6servings. All chicken recipes start with skinned chicken. Calories andfat grams per serving are provided, and many of the recipes are farless than the recommended maximum 30 percent fat. No esotericingredients are required.

The strange thing about this cookbook isthat the illustrations are all black-and-white photographs ofcelebrities--screen and TV stars, an astronaut, athletes, models, etc., who contributed some of the recipes--not a food shot amongthem. You may love Tony Lama's boots, but is his head shot the bestillustration for a recipe for Green Chile Rice Casserole? 1-0 out of 5 stars Recipes include cancer-causing foods!
This book includes CHARBROILING beef! What utter nonsense. There is no warning about the cancer-causing aspects of meat or charring flesh.I would never trust anything the American Cancer Society says. They are very biased in favor of expensive pharmaceuticals with cancer-causing side-effects. They are the wealthiest "charity" in America, with cash reserves of $1 Billion.

The Role of the ACS in the War Against Cancer

The verdict is unassailable. The American Cancer Society bears a major responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer.
The launching of the 1971 War Against Cancer provided the ACS with a well-exploited opportunity to pursue it own myopic and self-interested agenda. Its strategies remain based on two lies -- that there has been dramatic progress in the treatment and cure of cancer, and that any increase in the incidence and mortality of cancer is due to aging of the population and smoking while denying any significant role for involuntary exposures to industrial carcinogens in air, water, consumer products and the workplace.

Most of the funds raised by ACS go to pay overhead, salaries, fringe benefits, and travel expenses of its national executives in Atlanta. They also go to pay Chief Executive Officers, who earn six-figure salaries in several states, and the hundreds of other employees who work out of some 3,000 regional offices nationwide. The typical ACS affiliate, which helps raise the money for the national office, spends more than 52 percent of its budget on salaries, pensions, fringe benefits, and overhead for its own employees.

Salaries and overhead for most ACS affiliates also exceeded 50 percent, although most direct community services are handled by unpaid volunteers. DiLorenzo summed up his findings by emphasizing the hoarding of funds by the ACS.

"Most contributors believe their donations are being used to fight cancer, not to accumulate financial reserves. More progress in the war against cancer would be made if they would divest some of their real estate holdings and use the proceeds -- as well as a portion of their cash reserves -- to provide more cancer services."

Aside from high salaries and overhead, most of what is left of the ACS budget goes to basic research and research into profitable, patented cancer drugs.

The current budget of the ACS is $380 million and its cash reserves approach one billion dollars. Yet its aggressive fund-raising campaign continues to plead poverty, and lament the lack of available money for cancer research, while ignoring efforts to prevent cancer by phasing out avoidable exposures to environmental and occupational carcinogens.

Meanwhile, the ACS is silent about its intricate relationships with the wealthy cancer drug industry and chemical industries.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you choose only one Breast Cancer Book...
There are many good breast cancer books out there, and a couple of excellent ones. This book is outstanding, because it is able to include all the necessary medical information, while including all the other information that you need to take care of your life. I am more than my breasts, and more than my breast cancer!

This book includes the latest treatment guidelines for breast cancer, goes over the practical issues issues of work, insurance, and money, assembling a support team, coping with side effects, and going through the entire process. The medical information is clear, to the point, and well-written. It is the equal of any other book.

This is the only book which had quotes from survivors throughout the book, and the only book which has a thorough discussion of how to manage your everyday life while you go through treatment. No other book so frankly discusses what you can do to raise money to get through treatment, and what difficulties you may face at work or at home.

This book has only two flaws - it is a large book, and gets hard to haul everywhere (No heavier than Susan Love's book, though, and a much better book!) The second flaw is that there are pages that are recommended for copying. These pages are scattered throughout the book, and would be best assembled in an appendix or a separate workbook. ... Product Description
Although prostate cancer is a disease that strikes nearly 200,000 men every year, it is a disease that has been shrouded in silence, in part because it strikes at the very core of masculine identity. But in Man to Man, bestselling author Michael Korda breaks that silence, turning the story of his illness and recovery into a candid and instructive book that speaks not only to every man and woman whose life has been touched by prostate cancer but to everyone who lives in fear of it.

With unsparing frankness, Korda describes how he survived the ordeal of prostate surgery and its painful and humiliating aftereffects. He tells us how tumors are graded, evaluates different treatments, and makes sense of prostate cancer's mystifying "numbers."Practical, immensely readable, filled with information, and, above all, hopeful, Man to Man is literally a life-saver. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Frightening
I bought this book for a relative about to undergo prostate surgery. I am so glad I read it before giving (I decided not to) it to him. It is all bad news..........mostly complaining about the catheter/bag after surgery. Certainly not a make-you-feel better book for someone in this situation. However, it does give good doctor advice and terminology.

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of date and self-centered
I don't think I would have wanted to read this book before my surgery. Even making allowances for Michael Korda's self-absorption and wealth, the plain facts of his case are scary. On the other hand, it was illuminating to see Patrick Walsh in other than uncritically worshipful light.

Readers should understand at least a couple of things: (1) This book is at least as much about Michael Korda as it is about prostate cancer. He is candid in his description of his own shortcomings, but there is still a strong look-at-me undercurrent. (2) The technology and practices have changed dramatically since his diagnosis ten years ago. My nerve-sparing surgery was triggered by a PSA of just 4.6 and a thorough biopsy. The incision was only 4 or 5 inches, with dissolvable stitches. Anesthesia was general, with minimal blood loss. I was home two days after the surgery. Recovery (I'm less than a week post-op) has been uncomfortable but quite doable, with a terrific wife but without private nurses or special privileges.

There are better, more thoughtful books out there, though this one was fun to read after my surgery. There are also many helpful Web sites.

The advantage men have today is that there are many alternatives in treatment. This can also pose a great burden; it can be hard to make the final decision amid all the conflicting advice. The books and Web sites help. Just don't use Korda's book as your only guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tells more about Korda than about prostate cancer
Unless you are especially interested in Michael Korda, I strongly agree with those other reviewers in recommending that you DO NOT read this book before you decide on treatment or before you have surgery. The author of this book is a very sad case and far worse off than most opting for surgery. This book is worth reading AFTER surgery and you have begun to recoup a little. You'll at least feel good that you're not as bad off as this self-centered schmuck.
For good personal accounts of surviving prostate cancer read Bert Gottlieb's and William Martin's books. Both of these books are deeply reflective and filled with hope and useful information. Also Robert Young's Phoenix5 web site has very useful personal accounts.

5-0 out of 5 stars To be read several weeks after your surgery.
I had my surgery four weeks ago and found Mr. Korda's book fascinating to compare with my experience. It's an easy book to read and goes into the details and fears that other books mention in passing.Although Mr Korda's experience was a bit more dramatic than mine (I experienced relatively little pain and came home to an empty house after 5 days in the hospital)it was still interesting to me to compare how the surgery is done by the leading expert in the field at Johns Hopkins with how the surgery is performed at Baylor hospital in Dallas and to compare post surgery advice etc. Simply because he recounts an experience that was difficult for him is no reason to avoid reading this book.If nothing else, it gives the reader an idea of some of the questions to ask your surgeon. I was given a copy of the book by a stranger sitting next to me at my first cancer support group meeting and have enjoyed reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping
This is a gripping book that starkly conveys his emotions upon learning ofprostate cancer as well as his experiences deciding treatment and theprocess.I could not put it down, but can understand how others find it adisturbing read ahead of dealing with this problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have cancer, please read this book before getting treated
Dr. Willner validates what I have come to feel about chemo-torture, radiation and cutting for cancer. These procedures can make life a living hell and still not remove the cancer.

Chemo and radiation can damage the immune system to the point your body has few natural resources to assist you in healing. No wonder so many people die of non-cancer illnesses after being "treated" for cancer.

He gives causes and solutions as well as preventive suggestions that most of modern medicine says do not exist. Why not, anyway?

Notice the little we have gained in "The War on Cancer" in the last few decades. More and more deadly "therapies" have been produced instead.

Check out what is available and make an informed decision if you are diagnosed with any form of cancer. It might save your life as well as the quality of that life. ... Read more

The book was described as in "good condition" and indeed it was a pre-used Pierce County Library copy. I would highly recommend this supplier, Thrift Books, the book was a clean copy and it was delivered very promptly within two weeks of placing the order.

I think that this is a great book for the men who have prostate cancer, so you can understand the treatments that are available and their side effects. The only drawback that I found was that it was printed in 2005; however, if it's the only copy that you can find, it's worth getting for you library, since the treatments and side effects haven't changed that much between 2005 and 2009.

5-0 out of 5 stars A vitally important addition to every community library Health/Medicine reference collection in the country
Collaborative compiled, organized and edited by the team of Doctors David G. Bostwick (Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of Virginia); E. David Crawford (Associate Director, University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer City, Aurora, Colorado); Celestia S. Higano (Oncology Specialist, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Associate Professor, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle); and Mack Roach III (Professor of Radiation Oncology and Urology, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of California, San Francisco), the American Cancer Society's Complete Guide To Prostate Cancer is a single volume compendium providing the non-specialist general reader with all of the up-to-date information available on prostate cancer. Included are the latest advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment of prostate cancer; varied prostate cancer treatments and the decision making process to determine the best one for the reader; coping with emotional stresses and potential physical side effects (including incontinence and erectile dysfunction); practical issues related to work, finance, and medical care; as well as the fundamental quality of life issues after treatment, including sexuality and relationships. With prostate cancer affecting one in six of American men, with more than a quarter of a million American men diagnosed with prostate cancer, the American Cancer Society's Complete Guide To Prostate Cancer is a vitally important addition to every community library Health/Medicine reference collection in the country.

This work contains some brand new evaluative factors for prostate cancer. Examples of the factors are:
- age
- hormonal profile
- race (lowest incidence in American Indians and highest
incidence in Afro-Americans
- diet
- weight problems
- occupation

The author spends some time describing the conditions precedent
for prostate cancer. The process starts with microscopic changes in the cellular lining of the prostate. Age plays a role in multiple cancers. The PSA elevation is the classic evaluative test followed by a biopsy of the prostate. There is a nerve sparing prostectomy for lower risk cancers. The high risk cancers
may require the radical retropublic prostatectomy.
This work has a fairly comprehensive description of the current
diagnostic approaches and treatments. Complementary and alternative medicinal approaches could be described for the benefit of the reading audience. Overall, the work will help patients discuss prostate issues intelligently.

This book was loaned to me from the library of Mass General Hospital. It had absolutely no information on any "alternative treatments" or anything other than the standard treatments which are mostly 40 years old and known to fail to cure prostate cancer. Numerous treatments in current literature are not even in the index. This book is at least 30 years out of date and contains no useful suggestion for anyone with a cancer that might have spread.
They appear to be suppressing information.

More than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, but that diagnosis does not mean sitting on the sidelines while life passes you by. Both Tuthill and Daniels worked throughout their extensive cancer treatments and continued to enjoy their family, friends, and high-profile careers while fighting the fight of their lives. You Can Do This! shares with you the strategies that worked, what didn't, and what they wish they'd have known at the time of diagnosis, namely to:

* Believe that you can beat this!

Benefiting from the expertise of Dr. Ann Partridge, an oncologist at the renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston who helped both of the authors through their own cancer journeys, this triumvirate answers questions like: Can you keep working? How do you pick out a wig or pencil in an eyebrow? What role might reconstruction surgery and prosthetics play in your recovery? What steps can you take to retain a professional, healthy image despite the effects of chemotherapy? How do you broach the subject of cancer with small children? Is it possible to lose your hair and not your sense of humor or libido?

Inside You Can Do This!, Tuthill and Daniels help the newly diagnosed patient work through the initial shock of diagnosis and move forward to face the coming challenges with courage, strength, grace, makeup, and high heels. 5-0 out of 5 stars Most remarkable for its utter normalcy
Harvey Pekar is probably most well known for his work on American Splendor, a movie of which was made starring Paul Giamatti. But this tender story, which tells the painful and touching tale of his discovery that he has lymphoma and must begin chemotherapy. The news comes as Pekar and his wife, Brabner, are preparing to buy a house. As always with Pekar's work, Our Cancer Year is most remarkable for its utter normalcy. Pekar is an everyman through and through. As such, when he battles his disease, he does it in a comically human way. The title of this work is apt, too, because Pekar and his wife experience everything together in this fight against cancer. Pekar's strengths as a storyteller shine in this volume as his cancer battle is contrasted with the first Gulf War, going on at the same time. War too is an all-too-human affliction, but Pekar is able to find the glorious in even the most mundane traits of mankind. That's always been his gift, and it's on full display here.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book, and not just for fan's of his work
The first time I read this, it was because I wanted to read more about Harvey and his bout with cancer. I found it to be a very moving story that was -- as I would expect -- very honest and open on many of the details from that time. Even then, I was moved by how the chemotherapy nearly wiped him out, and how his own natural depression was exacerbated by the illness.

The second time I read this, it was because someone I know has cancer. Seeing her go through this, even at a distance, makes this even more poignant.Parts of this, to be honest, were hard to read. It's a very strong, unflinching book and I'm not sure it's for everyone (especially if you're about to start chemo). But, that being said, it is definitely worth reading.

A few quick comments:

1) The artist is, indeed, quite skilled (I've been a fan of his work for years), but he chose to do a very rough rendition here. This may not appeal to everyone.
2) I don't think you need to have any prior knowledge of Harvey Pekar or Joyce Brabner (although watching the movie, American Splendor, certainly would help).
3) In spite of the many good things I have to say about this book, I feel I must comment on its sloppy production values. Throughout the book, the text is marred by countless paste-up lines. Thin shadows visible near the places where they pasted the text onto the art board. Please, don't respond and say this is some sort of artistic decision. I was a professional typesetter for many years, and I can tell that this is just pure sloppy work. There are also places where the lettering style changes in the middle of a sentence and, obviously, this is where an editor spliced in a small correction. All in all, I found this sloppy workmanship to be a distraction (and, to be honest, I mostly blame the guy who shot the plates because it was his job to take clean pictures; but barring that, it falls on the editor because he should have done a better job proofing this book).
4) I've read Joyce's comics before, so her politics were not a surprise to me. But some people might be put off by here extreme left wing views, and her political activism occupies about 25% of the book. It is relevant because it covers what she was doing and who their house guests are, but nevertheless, it might be a distraction for some people.

Nevertheless, this is a good book, and I might even hazard to say that, in the genre of cancer literature, it's an important book. It's not for everyone, but I definitely recommend it to someone who wants to take a close, prolonged, no sugar-coating look at what it's like to survive cancer, and to survive the treatment for cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Picking up the pieces
I've always admired Joyce Brabner (I've even, truth to tell, had a bit of a crush on her).I like her writing talent, her passion for justice, her activism, her wit, her nonconformity, her looks, her scrapiness, and her determination to protect and nurture her obsessive-compulsive genius of a husband Harvey Pekar. And I love this memoir of the year in which things fell apart on several different fronts, and how Joyce picked them up.Our Cancer Year was co-written by Harvey and Joyce, but let's face it:the protagonist in the story is--and ought to be--Joyce.

Our Cancer Year has three plots going on in it.Joyce struggles to write a book about young kids around the world who work for peace; Joyce and Harvey decide to leave their rented apartment and buy a house; and Harvey is diagnosed and treated for lymphoma. In three intersecting circles, then, we see things fall apart:the trauma for the kids and Joyce's tireless (and occasionally despairing) efforts to befriend and nurture them; the hassles and unexpected emergencies that come with buying and fixing up a house; and the disruption of the quotidian when serious illness comes. The ordinary--which is, after all, Pekar's chosen metier--becomes confused, conflicted, messed up.Things fall apart.

It's Joyce's job to try to put them back together--or at least to be strong enough to help the kids and Harvey get through the storm until calmer weather returns. Her struggle to hold the center is the real story here, and it's a gripping and poignant one that actually caused tears to come to my eyes at one point (when Dana, one of the peace kids, leaves a phone message that an exhausted Joyce is too tired to pick up).Harvey's suffering, the numbness of Uri and the anger of Zamir, the insensitivity of Dr. Cantor, the sheer weariness, fear, and occasional rage of Joyce:these add to the creative tension of the story in ways that, at the end of the memoir, leave the reader emotionally exhausted but grateful for having been allowed to share this year with Joyce and Harvey.

A quick word about the artist, Frank Stack.Of all the illustrators with whom Pekar and Joyce collaborate, I have to say that I like his work least. But he was exactly the right artist for Our Cancer Year. The fluid, impressionistic style that Stack brings to the story chillingly conveys the theme of things falling apart, nothing standing still, the familiar contours going wavy.Such impressionism utterly fails to capture Pekar's obsessive-compulsive need for control, predictability, and definition, and that's why I generally don't like Stack's illustrations of Pekar's stories. But Our Cancer Year is, in part, a chronicle of the breakdown of predictability and definition. So Stack was an inspired choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't feel anything after I finished reading it
I know there are some fans out there of Harvey, Joyce, etc. I liked the movies "American Splendor" (big fan of Paul G.) and "Crumb" and took a chance on this book. I started reading it a while ago but stopped. A month ago I found out I had a pituitary adenoma (a.k.a. benign, slow-growing brain tumor). While going through one of the piles of books on my floor this morning I rediscovered this book and spent the day reading it. I'm pretty much left with a "So what?" feeling. One of my best friends from high school had NHL at about the same tme that Harvey did. He's subsequently had several surgeries for brain lesions. Maybe I'm just not the "American Splendor" graphic novel type, but I can't recommend this book to anyone, even if they or a loved one has cancer. I thought the illustrations were pretty good in that they well represented the emotions of the characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and Intriguing book - couldn't put it down
If you can't love Harvey Pekar, you can't love anyone. He is a lovely man, with as many neuroses as the rest of us, who listens and watches and reports on the people and world around him. Although this is about a bout with cancer, and how a man and his wife and friends make it through, it's not depressing. You do feel as though you are withthem -the graphic novel format makes this story easy to take in and digest. I might not have read it in a regular format, and it's something I'd be sorry to have missed.

I found the Pekar books to be like peanuts - I kept wanting more and more and hate to finish one - unless I have another ready to read. Harvey's 'comics" are the first graphic novels I've spent time reading, and I am hooked. The drawings add immeasurably to the story - a format I would like to see developed further in the future. ...
