Product Description
Limiting genome replication to once per cell cycle is vital for maintaining genome stability. Although polyploidization is of physiologically importance for several specialized cell types, inappropriate polyploidization is believed to promote aneuploidy and transformation. A growing body of evidence indicates that the surveillance mechanisms that prevent polyploidization are frequently perturbed in cancers. Progress in the past several years has unraveled some of the underlying principles that maintain genome stability. This book brings together leaders of the field to overviewsubjects relating to polyploidization and cancer. ... Read more

Product Description

It has become apparent that the genomes of many organisms are characterized by unique patterns of DNA methylation which can differ from genome segment to genome segment and cell type to cell type. These patterns can be instrumental in determining cell type and function. Thus, it is not surprising that studies on the role of DNA methylation now occupy center stage in many fields of biology and medicine such as developmental biology, genetic imprinting, genetic disease, tumor biology, gene therapy, cloning of organisms and others. Once again, basic research in molecular biology has provided the essential foundation for investigations of biomedical problems.

Product Description
This book provides both basic aspects and the latest findings in the molecular and cellular biology of malignant tumors. The focus is on the mechanisms by which normal and neoplastic cells proliferate, differentiate and undergo apoptosis. The differentiation of hemopoietic, epithelial and neuronal cells is treated with respect to growth factors, signal transduction, transcription factors, and genes regulating the cell cycle and the commitment to maturation. The role of oncogenes in neoplastic cell growth and cell death is also covered. The book deals with the regulation of globin gene expression by the LCR locus and the mechanisms of RNA stability for iron-binding and other proteins. The induction of differentiation of neoplastic cells as an alternative approach to cancer therapy is discussed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You Won't Find This Information Elsewhere
I bought this book because of Dr. Hollingsworth's reputation as a physician and a communicator; I am recommending it because everyone, at some time in her life, will want more information concerning her own... or a loved one's... breast cancer risk. There is good news: It is largely quantifiable.

"My mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer; am I at increased risk? What about my (daughter/sister) ?"

"I am at higher risk of developing breast cancer; what can I do to increase my chances of surviving this disease?"

These are tough questions which until now have too often gone unanswered.

Even if your own identifiable breast cancer risk is minimal, the odds are that you will have a friend or loved one who will be forced to deal with this issue. Given the existing lack of unanimity within the medical community as to even the diagnosis & treatment of breast cancer, it is not surprising that we are faced with such conflicting information about our risk of developing the disease. Highly-touted statistics notwithstanding, there is NO one-size-fits-all answer. When your health is at stake, statistical tautologies are not helpful.

Dr. Hollingsworth's book is written for clinicians as well as lay people. It explains in understandable language what you need to know to make the right choices. This book arms the reader with the knowledge to ask the right questions & the confidence to seek the best alternatives for her own unique situation.

There is a peace of mind to be gained from reading Dr. Hollingsworth's book. It places the mysteries, fables, facts & options re: risk assessment in clear perspective. It answers the question, "What on earth do I do now! "

Once you have read this book, I suspect that you will want to give copies to all the important women in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth is Out There
Dealing with breast cancer or the threat of it has been a way of life in our family. Both my aunts and mother have struggled with this disease. It claimed the lives of my aunts and my mother has one of those incredibly high individual risk assessments that cause us all to pause when it her exam time rolls around.

Whether medical journals or Ladies Home Journal, if it involves breast cancer, breast imaging, breast cancer dectection or treatment, I consume the information with a voracious appitite.Unfortunately, not all of it is worth filtering through but every now and then you hit pay-dirt.

Very recently that happened and would encourage others interested in the subject of breast cancer to read the new book "The Truth About Breast Cancer Risk Assessment", by Alan B. Hollingsworth, M.D.If you have ever wondered about all the data which comes flooding out of breast cancer studies which seem to contradict themselves, or you have been tempted to believe detecting (much less treating) breast cancer can be taught by using the cookie cutter method then this is a must read.

Although the book is crammed full of numbers and rather abstract mathmatical concepts, the reader quickly gains a sense of the deeper underlying message that like the X-Files - the truth is out there BUT you must realize that what you first encounter or are led to believe as true, may not be.

This book is a dose of reality in a world which is far too often looking for a quick a fix and sound bite for the 6 o'clock news about some revolutionary breakthrough in breast cancer which may or may not really be significant.

I consider myself a student on this topic and try to learn as much as I can.Anyone interested in the subject of breast cancer should read this book. You will have a completely new set of skills to filter the data you encounter from this point on. ... Read more

Product Description

This book reviews both genetic and biochemical data on the origin of genome instability and its impact on carcinogenesis. Reflecting recent discoveries and ongoing research, it discusses DNA repair mechanisms and hereditary cancer syndromes, as well as checkpoint mechanisms operating to safeguard chromosome integrity during cell cycle progression. Moreover, it summarises our current understanding of the various defects that may allow cancer cells to rapidly accumulate critical mutations and evolve, through processes reminiscent of Darwinian selection, an increasingly aggressive behaviour. Hopefully, this book will stimulate thought, discussion and experimentation, and serve as a rich source of information for a wide audience, including advanced students, researchers and clinical oncologists.

Advances in Cancer Research provides invaluable information on the exciting and fast-moving field of cancer research. Here, once again, outstanding and original reviews are presented on a variety of topics, including platelet-derived growth factor in disease, genetic predisposition in tumor development, primary effusion lymphoma, and many more.

Cancer is not one disease, but a group of diseases in which malignant cells grow out of control and spread to other parts of the body. Eventually these cells form a visible mass or tumor. Appropriate treatment for cancer depends on what kind of cancer a person has. The type of cancer is determined by the organ the cancer starts in, the kind of cell from which it is derived, and the appearance of the cancer cells. ... Read more

Advances in Genetics increases its focus on modern human genetics and its relation to medicine with the merger of this long-standing serial with Molecular Genetic Medicine. This merger affirms the Academic Press commitment to publish important reviews of the broadest interest to geneticists and their colleagues in affiliated disciplines.
Volume 39 of Advances in Genetics completes the trilogy of volumes authored by Dr. Igor Zhimulev of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia. This set comprises what is perhaps the most comprehensive collection of volumes dedicated to the study of polytene chromosomes. Volume 39 picks up where the previous two volumes, 34 and 37, left off. It covers the organization of genetic material in the morphological structures of the interphase chromosome, the chromomeres and the interchromomeric regions, and the structural changes occurring during the activation of the chomomeres, the puffs. ... Product Description
Different cancer types can result from a multiplicity of genetic and environmental factors. In recent years a number of genes have been identified as strong determinants for particular forms of cancer (particularly colon and breast cancer). The incomplete penetrance often evinced by the mutations of these genes has raised the possibility that additional endogenous or exogenous determinants contribute to cancer development or suppression. The major aim of this book is to present an integrated view of the various environmental, epidemiological and genetic determinants that contribute to a disease syndrome collectively known as "cancer". ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The pioneering work of a few investigators in the 1960s made it clear that genetic factors play an important role in tumor development. Hereditary factors have nonetheless received far less attention than environmental ones in the study of the causes of cancer. This has resulted in the discrepancy that there is a strong general concern, for example, about cigarette smoking and alcohol abuse (the two most common causes of cancer in humans) yet that many physicians give little or no attention to the patient's familial history and that first-degree relatives of patients are rarely felt to be at risk because of the common genetic background. This volume focuses on the genetic features of most human tumors, emphasizing their familial and hereditary basis as well as the close interaction between environmental and genetic factors. The aim is to translate our increased knowledge of familial cancer into new programs for cancer prevention and detection, such as the surveillance of high-risk individuals. ... Read more
