5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilled with this book!
I like most, was looking for ancestry information and this helped fill in some of the blanks.I didn't learn much French-Canadian history in school, but if I had, I would have learned my ancestors played an important role in helping establish New France amongst other things. The book is worth the price, and is even illustrated, which surprised me.I plan on buying others in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful genealogical tool.
Thanks to these volumes I was able obtain a great of information on my French-Canadian ancestors corroborating material I had found before and filling some missing blanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our French Canadian Ancestors -- like good friends
"Our French-Canadian Ancestors" by Thomas J. Laforest is an excellent resource on the early French Canadian history. It includes genealogical information of the early settlers and a little about thelifestyle of about 20 different families. It's got a great historicalreference about the King's Daughters.I was fortunate enough to find manyconnecting links to a family tree of my ancestors.Excellent resource tobegin a collection of French Canadian information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Personal profiles of French Canadian pioneers.
This series offers a very readable translation of the original FrenchCanadian-language series, adding drawings, historical briefs and appendicesthat are especially of interest to American-born descendents of Quebec'spioneer families. For history buffs, this series also offers insights intothe motivations of New France's immigrants and portrays highlights of dailylife, social activities and civil actions among the colonists. Some of theprofiles were prepared by family historians, who often wrote longer workson the same subject. My ancestor, Jean Le Brodeur, is featured in Chapter13 by Clement Brodeur of Quebec. The information is valuable on its ownmerits and as a starting point for further research. Most French Canadiandescendents are related to many of the persons portrayed in this series, due to the close-knit society and intermarriages among relatively fewfamilies. So several volumes may be of interest. This series extendsgeneral and specific knowledge of the Quebecois pioneers. - Gary Brodeu ... Read more

Product Description
Many thousands of the descendants of the intrepid French men and women who came to North America in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries have found that French-Canadian genealogy is a fruitful and engrossing avocation.French-Canadian Sources provides detailed explanations about the major sources available to those seeking French-Canadian ancestors. This book is a six-year collaborative effort of the eight members of the French Canadian/Acadian genealogical Society of Wisconsin's Publication Committee. The authors worked together to compile, revise, and update articles relating to research and sources that had been published in the association's quarterly publication over a period of some fifteen years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Translations for non-French speakers
The reason I originally got the book was to help me transcribe and translate some document images that I had.I don't speak French and the documents were written in older French script. The book provides sample documents with transcriptions and translations to help get the feeling of how to get information from French-Canadian documents. The book also has an appendix with translations for words with more than a straight translation, that is, some words have an expanded meaning for the genealogist and this appendix gives a clearer picture of document content.
I got a bonus from the book in that it provides timelines, history, and sources for other documents available.
This is an excellent reference for the French-Canadian researcher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This book has been extremely useful in helping me pinpoint how to begin delving into the background of my French Canadian ancestry.Shipping was prompt and I would deal with this company again.

3-0 out of 5 stars For beginner and intermediate Québec genealogists.
Written by members of the French-Canadian/Acadian Genealogists of Wisconsin.Covers the basic, readily available French-Canadian sources, most of which could be found looking through the FHL index for Québec. The sections are often sketchy.E.g. the "naming patterns" chapter touches on "dit" names and the Marie-/Joseph- issue, but ignores the significance of naming after godparents, grandparents, or other family members, especially for 19th-century first-borns.

There is also a lack of balance.A hundred pages are spent outlining secondary sources, while less than half that for primary sources.Given the equivalent ease of physical access to both from the FHL as well as the greater importance and validity of the primary sources, this is a distorted perspective.More space should have been spent upon the reading and interpreting the primary records. The exception to the sketchy treatment is the coverage of censuses in the appendices which seems to be a fairly thorough overview of the subject. The appendices also contain a nice French vocabulary.Overall, it's probably a good book for beginning/intermediate Québec genealogists, but nothing new or exciting for those who have working Québec for a few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality -- and almost the only thing of its kind
A new guide to family history research in French Canada is automatically of interest to Louisiana genealogists (like me) not only because of the historical similarity between the French colonial systems in Quebec and Louisiana, but also because a large fraction of those expelled by the English from Acadia made their way to Quebec. To produce such a volume, the publication committee of the French-Canadian/Acadian Genealogists of Wisconsin first considered republishing a collection of articles from its Quarterly, but realized too many of them required major revision and that a number of other topics had not been addressed at all. This book became a six-year project and the quality of the results of their labors is generally quite high, and the researcher is likely to come back to it again and again, not only for instruction in wringing the most out of the key primary and secondary sources but for ready reference. The introductory section summarizes the history of French Canada, provides a detailed timeline, explains Quebecois naming patterns, and describes the seigneurial system under which New France operated. The section on primary materials gives details on obtaining and using French-Canadian church records, the place of civil registration in Quebec, and the use of notarial records (with which south Louisiana researchers should already be familiar). An extended discussion of the dozen or so most important secondary sources accounts for about one-third of the volume, and includes Tanguay's _Dictionnaire Genealogique_, Leboeuf's _Complement to Tanguay_, the _Loiselle Quebec Marriage Index_, Jette's _Dictionnaire Genealogique_ of families to 1730, the _Repetoire des actes_, and the _Programme de researche en demographie historique_ (the PRDH), among others. Each of these chapters moves from an overview to a detailed discussion of what information is included and how to make the best use of it. There are numerous examples and illustrations. A further section of specialized topics includes a very good article on the "filles du roi" and others on Canadian military records and the special problems of researching fur-trading ancestors. (A very brief outline of genealogy on the Internet, however, would have been better omitted.) A series of appendices provide relevant maps, essential French vocabulary, how dates are written in French, the details of Canadian census records and census substitutes, and a lengthy list of addresses of libraries, archives, and organizations in French Canada. The writing quality throughout is high and in an extended perusal I was able to detect no glaring errors or omissions. If you have any interest in French-Canadian family research, I can recommend this one for your primary reference shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE REFERENCE!
This is THE reference book for all French-Canadian researchers and for other researchers whose ancestors may have spent time in the French areas of Canada. The book is meticulously researched and well indexed for ease of use.It includes many, many sources not available in other reference material.Well done! ... Product Description
This book focuses on the genealogy of the Pierre Desmarais and Fabien Deveau families - later known as Peter Demro and Joseph Davis. These men immigrated from Quebec to De Pere, Wisconsin in the 1850s. The spelling of the surnames is complex but include Desnoyers, Desmarais, Demereau and finally Demro for Pierre. Fabien went by Devost, Deveau and finally Joseph Davis. Each of these men emigrated from Quebec to De Pere, Wisconsin prior to 1854. The book also contains information about the descendants of these men and has numerous photographs obtained from living family members. An introduction about the history of Quebec or New France is followed by sections about these original immigrant ancestors. Where did they come from in Quebec? What did they do once in Wisconsin? Appendices describing the experiences of French immigrants as they left France, crossed the Atlantic and arrived in the Canada is included. Finally family group sheets outline the genealogy of these original immigrant ancestors. If you have an interest in early French immigration to the Canada, immigration of French Canadians to Wisconsin area or if you are descended from one of these men, read this book! ... Read more

Product Description
1901 Canadian Census Ontario: Cardwell – Compiled by Canadian Heritage and Genealogy Enterprises. Several pertinent facts stand out about the 1901 Canadian census; one, that it was intended to be the most comprehensive listing of the population to date and two, because post 1901 censuses were taken under a statute which provided that the information collected would never be released, it may well be the last document of its kind available to the public. Census reports contain a wealth of details for the interested researcher, but accessing pertinent information can be difficult, hence the values of a research tool like this. Compiled by Canadian Heritage and Genealogy Enterprises, this text extracts from the 1901 Canadian census the following items: division, page and family numbers, surname, given name, relationship to head of household, full birth date, birthplace and year of immigration if it applies. These particular headings include and integrate the fields of data of most importance to family researchers so that what appears are entire families, who they were and where they came from. Historians and genealogists will appreciate the organized, easy to follow presentation of this information, as well as the 138-page fullname index for quick referencing of particular families and ancestors. Sure to enhance any reference library, this work is a must have for researchers interested in Canadian ancestry. 2002, 424 pp., index, paper. ... Read more

From the author: Twenty-eight hereditary disorders are known to cluster in at least one region of Quebec, 24 of them in regions east of Quebec City, including 20 in the northeastern part of the province. Genealogies were reconstructed to identify the probable origin of 21 of these 28 disorders present in the French Canadian population. The results showed that most of the disorders were brought to Nouvelle-France by settlers coming from France in the seventeenth century. Only 249 of the 8483 settlers in Nouvelle-France contributed, as common founders, to these genealogies. The contribution of the province of Perche was significantly higher than expected from its relative weight to the founding nucleus of the French Canadian population in 19 disorders. Furthermore, 34 of the 48 different common founders from Perche were found in more than one disorder.

From the author: In our previous paper (De Braekeleer and Dao 1994) we showed that most of the hereditary disorders present in the French Canadian population of Canada cluster in eastern Quebec. Furthermore, the disorders probably were brought to Nouvelle-France in the seventeenth century by migrants coming from Perche, France. Here, the analysis of several historical, social, and demographic factors shows that, rather than migrants coming from other French provinces, migrants from Perche came from a limited area and settled in eastern Quebec, preferentially on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. They arrived earlier than the other migrants and had a larger descendance. However, only a limited number of migrants from Perche were found in the founding nucleus of the hereditary disorders. Further analysis shows that the social system had major consequences on migration, marriage, kin network, and family behavior. Therefore the presence and the high frequency of most of the hereditary disorders in the French Canadian population appear to be the result of founder effect and genetic drift.
