Product Description
Canada's relationship with the United States and its place in the world currently occupy distinct spheres in the minds of policymakers, intellectuals, and citizens. At home, Canada is thought to enjoy a "special" relationship with the United States; abroad, it occupies a place as the world's problemsolver and peacekeeper. Patrick Lennox analyzes six key events in the history of relations between the two countries to reveal the underlying connection between the Canada-US relationship and Canada's place in the world. The war in Afghanistan is but the latest in a series of paradoxical interactions between the two states abroad that has resulted from the hierarchy in Canada-US relations at home. Innovative and sophisticated, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding Canada's place in the world.

Patrick Lennox is a fellow of the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute and the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies, Dalhousie University. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting case study
This book is divided into 2 sections. The first basically shows ways in which the theory of multinationalism that is set out in "Liberalism, Community and Culture" and "Multicultural Citizenship" should be applied in the Canadian context.Kymlicka identifies Quebec andaboriginals as national groups in the Canadian case. While it seems clearthat there would be practical problems, were Canada to attempt the nationalrecognition suggested, this section is a thoughtful perspective on acountry that has spent a tremendous amount of time over the past decadesattempting to manage the multiple nations within the state. The secondsection looks at the application of multiculturalism to non-nationalimmigrant communities and over all is fairly favourable. This is arefreshing perspective in light of the trend towards negative publicationsabout Canadian multiculturalism. ... Product Description

"We are thus not only the first country in the world with the capability to produce nuclear weapons that chose not to do so, we are also the first nuclear armed country to have chosen to divest itself of nuclear weapons."

Pierre Trudeau United Nations, 26 May 1978

From 1963 to 1984, US nuclear warheads armed Canadian weapons systems in both Canada and West Germany. It is likely that during the early part of this period, the Canadian military was putting more effort, money, and manpower into the nuclear commitment than any other single activity. This important book is an operational-technical history and expose of this period.

Its purpose is to bring together until-recently secret information about the nature of the nuclear arsenal in Canada, and combine it with known information about the systems in the US nuclear arsenal. The work begins with an account of the efforts of the Pearson government to sign the agreement with the US necessary to bring nuclear weapons to Canada. Subsequent chapters provide a detailed discussion of the four nuclear weapons systems deployed by Canada: the BOMARC surface-to-air guided interceptor missile; the Honest John short range battlefield rocket; the Starfighter tactical thermonuclear bomber; the VooDoo-Genie air defence system. Each chapter also includes a section on the accidents and incidents which occurred while the weapons were at Canadian sites. The final chapter covers the ultimately futile efforts of the Maritime Air Command and the Royal Canadian Navy to acquire nuclear weapons. An appendix includes the text of the until-now secret agreements Canada signed with the USA for the provision of nuclear weapons.

Illustrated throughout with photographs and diagrams, and supported by extensive transcriptions of original documents, Canadian Nuclear Weapons will be of great value both to scholars and interested laypersons in its presentation of what has been a deeply hidden secret of Canadian political and military history.

Product Description
Canada's involvement in Afghanistan is the longest martial conflict in its history precipitated literally overnight by a world changing event in the 2001 9/11 attack in New York City. In 2010, the Afghan 'Mission' remains front page news for Canadian, even threatening to undermine the Federal Government due to the so-called 'Detainee Scandal'. The human cost (Canadian and Afghan), financial burdens and impact on the self-perception of Canadians as a peace keeping 'Middle-Power' are immense and likely will form a watershed in Canadian history. And yet, the 'Mission' remains little scrutinized by faith communities and further, left as a non-conversation for many and the domain of a nebulous foreign policy and largely toothless Manley Report. This volume is the first such major attempt, by the Centre for Public Theology, to bring together theologians, philosophers, faith leaders, NGOs, politicians and other academics from sociology, politics and peace-keeping in order to dialogue about the impact of the Afghan 'Mission'. These papers form much of the conversation of a conference held in May 2009 at the Centre for Public Theology. The papers offer reflections on the Manley Report, investigations on the theological and philosophical issues at play in Canada's response, interaction with Canada's shift from 'peace-keeping' to 'war-fighting' and the new NATO mandate, thoughts on the role of Islamic nations and analysis of the role of the Abrahamic faith communities in this wider Canadian conversation. The Centre for Public Theology is a federally funded research centre housed at Huron University College whose mandate is to bring into conversation academics, NGOs, media, Government and the public on issues of public policy and life with a particularly attention to the role of religion in Canadian life. Its founding motto is 'intelligence, not advocacy'. It is not an advocacy or lobbying centre, instead seeking only to facilitate dialogue across boundaries. Its webpage can be found at the website. ... Read more

Product Description

Robert Young discusses the ways in which Canadians might reconstitute their country after Quebec separates and considers possible political and economic arrangements between Quebec and Canada - the "association" aspect of sovereignty-association - including the breakdown of economic cooperation. Arguing that the long-term future of Canada and the shape of Canada-Quebec relations will depend on how the transition to sovereignty takes place, Young provides a clear and detailed analysis of how the transition is likely to occur. His discussion addresses major issues to be negotiated during the secession - citizenship, national debt, borders, armed forces and public service, commercial and economic relations, currency, First Nations, minority rights, mobility and immigration, and environmental matters. For comparison, Young draws on the experiences of other countries where peaceful secession has occurred, including Czechoslovakia. The second edition includes a new preface and concluding chapter that discuss to what extent the situation has changed since the referendum of 1995.

Product Description
In this fast-paced and dramatic book, journalist Chris Cobb serves up a solidly reported business story laced with political intrigue, insider gossip, and inflamed egos.

It looked, at first, like it would be a rout. Conrad Black, supreme commander of the upstart National Post, was jubilant: “We have shattered this cozy little logrolling, backscratching society of the Toronto media cartel!” The Post style was quickly dubbed “tits and analysis,” but the threat was very real. Once the Post was launched, the fight got dirty. For six months a Globe spy faxed them the Post’s front page each day before the Globe went to press. The publisher at the Star warned his top people that the Post’s owners “aren’t restrained by the Marquess of Queensberry rules.” The struggling Globe drafted the foppish, often brutal Fleet Street editor Richard Addis, who put the paper through an agonizing but ultimately successful readjustment.

The short but invigorating war left many casualties in its wake, but it also made newspapers exciting for the first time in this country. And it produced some of the finest, most discussed journalism this country has seen.

Based on solid research and interviews with all the major players – editors, publishers, owners, columnists, advertisers – Ego and Ink is enlivened with colourful dialogue, remarkable characters, eye-opening anecdotes, and the quick pace of popular fiction. This irreverent book also offers newspaper readers fascinating insight into how the business works. ... Read more

Product Description
The tumultuous relationship between the United States and Canada’s extradition systems, their histories, and all of the issues, conflicts and controversies are here in this richly detailed, colorful text. The book is especially valuable today given the global response to the events of September 11, 2001 and the United States’ war on terrorism, which has had a dramatic impact on the way Canada and the U.S. conduct extradition procedures between one and other.

The author examines the most crucial extradition cases from the 19th to the 21st century, including cases arising out of World War II, the civil rights era, and recent terrorist activities.Amongst the highlights are detailed analysis of:

Attitudes towards extradition in North America from initial reluctance to extradite to the negotiation of the Jay Treaty (1894), which had a rudimentary extradition provision; The period of the greatest development of extradition law, which occurred at the beginning of the twentieth century; The consolidation of extradition procedure towards a period of assertion of pre-eminent executive discretion, a "devolution" characterized by an eventual breakdown in cooperation between Canada and the United States in extradition matters after the Second World War; The extent to which extradition dried up until 1971, when a new extradition treaty between Canada and the United States was negotiated, along with innovative procedures for improving cooperation in handling extradition requests on both sides of the border; The Treaty of Extradition Between the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States ratified in 1976, as amended in 1988 and 2003, which provides rules governing seizure and sufficiency of evidence, arrest, and provisional arrest; encourages mutual cooperation between the executive authorities of the two nations; and in theory at least provides a modicum of protection for individuals caught up in extradition proceedings. Current legislative scheme in Canada’s Extradition Act (1999), showing the ways in which executive discretion has been expanded and judicial discretion diminished in virtually every level. The shifting sands of extradition law from the perspective of the twenty-first century, including the ramifications of extraditing alleged terrorists to face justice in a shaken and bestirred America. This work will be valuable for anyone working on the myriad extradition cases now existing between the United States and Canada or for those interested in acquiring an understanding of certain historical differences between these North American neighbors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indigenous Peoples' Rights
If you are concerned to understand Indigenous Peoples' Rights from a perpsective that distinguishes an historical, cultural and legal issues and developments, buy this book. It is a carefully edited and well organisedcollection in which the 20 contributors explore commonalities ofexperiences under colonialism and social and legal moves towardsself-determination in countries with a similar legal and constitutionalhistory. However the collection does not gloss over differences in indenouspeoples' experiences within these jurisdictions, and this aspect not onlyprovides stark and thoughtful contrasts, it exposes ongoing problems forgovernance and social relations.

Paul Havemann provides several chaptersthat comprise an historical and thematic framework for the close analysisin the six sections that cover: Public International Law; Sovereignty,Self-Determination, and Coexistence; the impact of colonial settlement inthe Anglo-Commonwealth; Indigenous Peoples' Rights Claims; therelationships between criminalisation of indigenous peoplss andcolonisation; administering citizenship and self-determination andconstitutional issues arising from indigenous rights claims. In each ofthese sections, well known writers including Ranginui Walker, MarciaLangton, Alan Ward and Paul Chartrand analyse the specificities of theexperiences of indigenous peoples in their national contexts.

What isespecially satisfying (and challenging) about this collection is itsattention to detailed analysis, lack of generality and avoidance ofstereotyping and puffery. Although there is notan exhaustive coverage ofthe heterogeneity of indigenous viewpoints, the collection avoidscaricature of key differences and demands the reader pay attention tohistorical complexity in both indigenous narratives as well as thecontested nature of law as it's developed in each context. The collectionrequires time and thought to fully digest, since its multi-dimensionalmethodology has the reader aware throughout of many further researchpossibilities opened up by the questions raised. It is an exciting andintelligent contribution to debates about 'rights', 'indigeniety','self-determination' and international law. ... Read more

Product Description
This book studies the relations between Britain and Canada from the end of the First World War to the Imperial Conference of 1926. It is concerned principally with the problems of imperial co-operation and consultation in foreign affairs and defence policy, and with the pressures developing out of these problems to reformulate the constitutional relations of Britain and her dominions. In the course of examining Canadian attempts to redefine empire-commonwealth relationships this book also throws fresh light on the evolution of British attitudes to the dominions during these years. Often there were serious policy disagreements in Whitehall - the Colonial Office preferring to conciliate, the Foreign Office to challenge the overseas governments - and Dr Wigley, with close attention to official and private papers, shows clearly that developments in this period owed far more to Britain's own responses and priorities than has been previously realised. ...
