In the mid-1800s San Bernardino emerged as one of the largest settlements in southern California. It surpassed Pueblo de los Angeles and San Diego in grain and lumber yields and boasted a burgeoning cattle industry and promising wine vineyards. But as a Mormon commune--the farthest outpost in Brigham Young's Rocky Mountain empire--the colony was threatened, and finally abandoned, in 1857 during the Utah war with the United States.From the beginning, Young had misgivings about the colony. Particularly perplexing was the mix of atypical Latter-day Saints who gravitated there. Among these were ex-slave holders; inter-racial polygamists; horse-race gamblers; distillery proprietors; former mountain men, prospectors, and mercenaries; disgruntled Polynesian immigrants; and finally Apostle Amasa M. Early Mormon colonization of San Bernardino
I come from one of the early LDS pioneer families (Bemis) that colonized San Bernardino (BTW I am Active LDS).I have spent days in the LDS Historical Archives researching this colony. I have read the research done by others of this colony. This book by Lyman(who is descended from one of the Church leaders sent to colonize San Bernardino), is by far the best on the subject. This book goes into detail about Brigham Young's struggle to colonize this area, the actual colonization (and their struggles), and the fight to return to Brigham Young's fold. I have a Great Grand Mother who left the LDS Church while in San Bernardino, and later joined the RLDS Church because of the stranglehold that Brigham Young had over the early saints.For anyone who is interested in the early Mormon colonization of San Bernardino, I highly recommend this book. Professor Lyman brings this part of history alive.

Pastoral Research Study --Abstract: Different philosophical perspectives have emerged regarding the basis for mental health healing that contrast pastoral counselors with their secular counterparts. These philosophical differences limit client referrals, treatment options, and professional collaboration between religion and psychology. Previous research shows secular counseling is a viable option for pastors as they assist congregants in more liberal denominations with mental health issues. However, there is an absence of research addressing whether Foursquare Church pastors view secular counseling and referral as beneficial for their congregants. This non-experimental quantitative study, drawing upon therapy and counseling theories, included survey data from 134 Foursquare Church pastors on their views toward theology, counseling, secular referral, and counseling preparedness and confidence using the Pastoral Attitudinal Survey toward Referral scale (PASTOR) and the Scriptural Literalism Scale (SLS). Key research questions assessed the pastors responses to theological, counseling, and referral subscales as a function of the pastors age, experience, counseling course credits, and theological conservatism. Principal component analysis and univariate analysis of variance demonstrated the pastors were a homogeneous group in their recognition of the value of secular referral; however, the majority of the pastors who responded in this study would not refer their congregants to secular counselors. ... Religion and Mental Health
The results presented in this book are data from the PASTOR survey sent out in early 2007 to the Foursquare church ministers in California. Dr. Blunt was interested in establishing some initial research on these conservative pastors referral views toward secular counselors. One of his hypothesis was that these pastors were primarily trained in theological doctrine, yet the study revealed these pastors were frequently asked to counsel their congregants in other human conflict areas as well. This book is packed with data that may be helpful to other conservative pastors in understanding that they are not alone in their quest to seek additional training and to recognize their counseling limitations. ...
