Product Description
This popular, unique user manual is designed expressly to help engineers and scientists get the most from their highpower Hewlett Packard calculator. Clearly designed and targeted. Known to be far superior to the generic manual provided. The perfect companion to an HP 48.

This book takes readers from the initial confusion most have when they first take the HP-48G/X out of the box and try to use it, through a process by which they eventually master this marvelous machine. This book does not presume to describe all there is to know. This book does something more important! -It gets you started. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that bad
The book claims to be "known to be far superior to the generic manual provided." It isn't. As noted in previous reviews, the examples are worthless if you've every heard of, say, an if-then-else statement. If you know the basics of RPL, you won't need this book. If you don't, read the manual that came with your HP. I should also note that reviewing a book that you admit to not having read is rather bad form. And yes, it does claim to be what the reviewer from Loiza believed. Oh, and racial stereotyping, also, is bad form. Have a nice day, hopefully with a better book. (Or, hell, just go to your neighborhood friendly search engine and type in "hp48g" and you'll get a ridiculous amount of resources, many of which are utterly excellent.)

2-0 out of 5 stars It's not even what it claims to be
What this book offers is basically the same thing as the user's manual, adorned with words we mortals understand.I think that the user's manual, anda little practice, is all you need to get started with a HP 48G.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for programming.
Just wondering why 11 of 13 people found Pablo's review helpful?

From the title and description of this book, it does not claim to be a HP48 programming book.

There are plenty of those, this is obviously a better user manual.

No offence to Pablo, but giving a book a poor rating because it does not meet criteria that it never claims to, is really bad form.

I have'nt read it (yet), but my rating is an attempt to help rectify the poor first reader review.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what you would expect
I bought this book expecting to learn more about programming, big mistake, not only because you won't learn anything new about programming but also because the examples and problems of that book are stupid too. If you arean engineer or a student and want to try improve your knowledge I don'trecomend this book, you will waste your money just as I did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The VERY best book on using the HP 12C calculator - bar none
You will never regret owning this book.I guard mine jealously; never lend it out; always refer people to Amazon to buy one of their own.Once you start reading this wonderful guide, you will quickly see why it is the best.Everything is explained in understandable language (the book does not use jargon to explain other jargon, like so many other manuals do).The book builds from front to back; so, as you turn the pages, you find you want to get your calculator and try the things suggested. Also, the humorous hand-drawn illustrations make understanding just pop out of every page.By the time you reach the end of the book, not only do you understand the calculator, you understand the financial applications it is used to perform; something even a semester of "Math of Finance" could not do for me in college.By the time I finished the book, I was able to, immediately, use the calculator in my work. Not only that, but within a fairly short time, I was asked to teach a course to my co-workers on how to properly use the calculator.I bet you can guess what I used for my training materials. ... The properties of functions should be explored and discovered rather than taught and drilled. Students can explore various types of functions on the TI-84 Plus in cooperative groups or on their own as you facilitate their learning.Keying sequences guide them through the variety of menus on the TI-84 Plus without the need to page through the calculator manual. Detailed solutions at the back of the book help students over obstacles to their learning and the operation of the menus and submenus are absorbed with minimal effort as the mathematics is learned. Deeper investigations are included to challenge the more capable student, and historical vignettes are introduced to add a human dimension to the mathematical excursions. This new publication has been expanded to include a more detailed treatment of linear and quadratic functions and the law of sines and cosines found in most state and provincial guidelines. The topics include finding zeros, domain and range, extrema, and singularities of polynomial and rational functions. Properties of the trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions are also explored. Topics also include the study of limits and asymptotic behavior, polar coordinates, parametric equations and conics. ... Read more

Product Description
Want to learn business math painlessly? Then this textbook is what you need. Written by the author after teaching business math for over 15 years, this book is written so that someone could sit down, read it, and have it seem as if they had a private tutor sitting there beside them, explaining the topic being covered. It is written using a very conversational style.

This text is presently used in the author's sophomore level Quantitative Analysis for Business class at a local university and covers two broad areas of math application to business problems: the time value of money and an introduction to basic statistics.

The book uses three commonly available business calculators - the HP-10B, the HP-12C, and the TI BAII Plus Advanced Business Analyst. The slight changes needed for the examples to work with the new HP-10BII are also covered. However, the approaches used (and even many of the key presses) would work with any business calculator or programmable calculator running a Time Value of money program.

Chapters included: Simple Interest, Compound Interest, More Compound Interest Topics, Annuities, More Annuity Topics, Special Annuities, Cash Flow Analysis, Data Collection and Presentation, Central Tendency and Dispersion, Basic Probability Concepts, Probability Distributions, and Correlation and Linear Regression.

This book is a great help to anyone studying for the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exam or who desires to learn how to use their financial calculator effectively.

This is the third edition with several new sections and revisions from the earlier edition . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Money
I bought this book, intending to use it to augment the HP-12c User's Manual. Not only is it an excellent companion to the HP manual, but it is also a complete user's manual and teaching (learning) tool in its own right, as it goes beyond the examples in the HP User's Manual. The author knows the HP-12C through-and-through, and I am pleased to be a student in his substitute class-room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent prep book for both the CFP and CFA exams
This is a concise but thorough textbook of mathematics of finance and basic statistics, with solutions illustrated on the HP10BII and HP12C calculators.Numerous exercises with solutions are provided.Because of an emphasis on handheld calculators rather than Excel, CFP and CFA candidates would be especially interested in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for Business Professionals & Students
Gene Wright has done an amazing job teaching Quantitative Analysis and Statistics to anyone - without requiring the reader to be a rocket scientist. After reading his book, you will truly understand how to apply and use statistics in the real world.I had the wonderful opportunity to take Gene's class at Lipscomb University, in Nashville, TN.He is one of the best teacher's I have ever had.He made statistics easy.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone in the business world and to anyone currently taking a statistics class that doesn't have a clue what their teacher is talking about.

I was so impressed by this book, that I am writing this review almost three years after taking his class!I always meant to write one, but being the forgetful person I am (see, I'm not a rocket scientist either!), I am just now getting around to it!Bottom line - buy the book - you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Common-sense approach
This textbook is not written in the usual stale educational style. The author uses an approach to teaching that's designed to not intimidate the student; it's an "easy read." The examples (and calculator keystrokes)can be followed easily; it's almost like having the instructor there with you. This is a textbook I will keep since I've referred back to it not just in my work, but in my personal life as well when planning mortgage & other payments. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Quantitative Analysis for Business
This book is a must for anyone in the business world. It is a wonderful reference to keep on hand.I rarely refer back to books I have purchased but this book comes in handy time and time again. The mathematical principles explained in this book are simple enough for anyone to understand. Each principle is shown step by step. It shows shortcuts to solving problems with three types of business calculators. This book will be in my library for years to come!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanded Algebra Through Data Exploratioin
I ordered this for Ardeth Woods. She said she received the book and was well satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Algebra with Technology
Do you want your students to be centrally active in their algebra education? Then this text is could be the cornerstone of your course! The authors present the concepts of algebra as investigations in which thestudents participate using graphing calculators to store, manipulate, andanalyze data.By participating in the current and interestinginvestigative projects, the students utilize algebraic concepts as alanguage to describe their research, analysis, and conjectures. The courseis centered on the graphing calculator as a technological tool forexpressing and investigating mathematical ideas and concepts.Ideas thathad to be visualized in the students' minds can now be graphicallypresented through parametric equations, recursive equations, and theirgraphs."What if .. " can be done within the presentation withthe results displayed in real time.Using this text causes the student tobecome an active participant in the course rather than a passive observerwho attempts to repeat the text examples.

In addition to the regulartopics covered in typical texts, "Advanced Algebra Through DataExploration" has chapters on statistics, data analysis, trigonometricconcepts, and parametric equations. In each topic, the student ispresented with real world applications and is lead to investigate theconcepts through well-designed activities that arouse the interest of thestudents.Rather than lists of equations to factor and solve, each sectionoffers situations in which the presented concepts are used to arrive at asolution. The graphing calculator is used to do the time-consuming graphpreparation and number crunching so that the student can spend his/her timein designing and testing problem solving strategies. This is awell-designed, new text that is highly interesting to both student andteacher alike! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars where's the memory tricks ?
you'd think that a man known for teaching memory tricks to people would show you how to remember these math tricks, wouldn't you? he doesn't. no different than any other rapid math book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought them as school workbooks
I loved this book so much, I recently bought 4 more copies for a friend of mine, so that they could work with their kids as if this were a school workbook...

I actually bought my first copy of Miracle Math a few years back and I was hooked from the beginning. Harry Lorayne's writing style makes it seem as if this approach to calculation was a hidden secret that once discovered would make math seem so simple. I loved studying math in school but I must say that if math were this fun and exciting, I would have have become a mathematician. I do remember one of my Algebra teachers performing amazing calculations in his head and it always amazed me...But now I know his secrets!

If you want to brush up on your math skills, this is NOT the book. If you want a new, faster, easier, better way to perform calculations this IS the book. This will work for children who are struggling in mathematics, but it will teach them an entirely different system than they are not teaching in school, but I guarantee you that they will be getting straight A's!

I truly believe this should be a book taight in our school system.

2-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Concepts for Simple Math
The bulk of this book is based on improving skill sets around the four basic modes of math; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Lorayne establishes that most people run into issues when carrying any numbers larger than a single digit in their head. This causes people to significantly slow their processes down as the mind is forced to be out of its comfort zone.Lorayne demonstrates this eloquently with his example of trying to memorize five numbers that are all two digits versus remembering five numbers that are all a single digit. The results are conclusive as evidenced by any trial of this experiment. The bulk of this book is based on this premise and the impact of viewing numbers using only single digits and grouping multiples of tens separately.

It is undeniable that the methods in this book will enhance your basic math skills if you are not already using similar tactics. However, this book did not rate especially high with me since the mathematical processes are limited to only elementary applications.Adding quickly on paper or dividing large numbers in your head represents only the very tip of the iceberg in terms of most relevant math in everyday life.Had the book provided insight into functional analysis, assessing trends from mathematical data, mathematical and/or financial projections, then the topics covered would have been invaluable. Thus learning the applications in Miracle Math might make one a more effective cashier, but will otherwise prove to be nothing more than party tricks.

This book also left a very poor taste in my mouth due to a very obvious mathematical typo that left me wondering about Lorayne's actual educational background. On page 135 where he presents his case for factoring, he reminds the reader that we at one point learned that "60N = 6N x 10N".One can only hope that this represents merely a very poor editing job because if not, Lorayne has a serious misunderstanding of simple factoring leaving one to wonder if he has any mathematical background other than simple mathematical concepts.

If your only goal is to learn to add numbers faster or to divide large numbers with more simplicity, then this book will be worthwhile; however if you are anticipating having advanced mathematical skills that will make you stand out, you will be disappointed unless you are in the early stages of schooling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Furious or Get Smarter -- Your Choice
An earlier reviewer wrote, "You get nothing for nothing." And that's exactly right, if you put in NO effort, you get NO improvement.

But putting in a little effort with this will show BIG results. I'm in the middle of retraining my brain right now to do math using these methods -- after 42 years I'm kind of entrenched in the "normal" way but see the possibilities so I'm willing to make the effort to change.

Since we're now homeschooling our children they can get this way of doing math from the very beginning -- by the time they're adults and this is "just the way they do it" they will have a huge advantage over the average person.

Folks who say this doesn't work, or that memory improvement "tricks" don't work must be looking for something that requires no work. With reasonable effort you can realize tremendous results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
The people who didn't like this book either didn't read it, or they didn't learn it.

The book is not a book of "tricks" but a different way to look at the subject. It is written by the master of training the mind to have a better memory.Anything written by Mr. Lorayne deserves your attention....

....including his books on magic, if it is magic you're looking for!! ... Read more
