5-0 out of 5 stars Useful simple calculations and complex formulas
I found this book very useful. Some of the calculations are very basic and others are very complex. The formulas can be used for investing in stocks or they can be used for other accounting purposes, like compounding or taxes. The book explains how and why you would use the calculations and gives examples.It also gives examples of the formulas in reverse. I would recommend this to anyone who makes short term and long term investments of any type, and not just in stocks. I highly recommend this book to those who are thinking of making an investment...to make the correct calculations and wise choices...don't be mislead...do your own calculations and research...

3-0 out of 5 stars If you know nothing then it is okay.
The book does do what you would expect. I found it helpful but if you took an accounting class in high school there is nothing in here that you do not already know. There is nothing extra to the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readers will learn the formulas the pros use, and can then apply them for quick and accurate results.
Any consumer investing in the stock market and any library catering to such patrons needs Michael C. Thomsett's The Stock Investor's Pocket Calculator: it makes the math behind equity investing simple, offering over 100 ratios and formulas broken down into easy steps and presented in simple English for the non-mathematician. Readers will learn the formulas the pros use, and can then apply them for quick and accurate results. ... Read more

Product Description

Scott Flansburg's heartfelt belief is that there are no "mathematical illiterates," just people who have not learned how to make math work for them. But millions of otherwise successful adults are afraid to balance their checkbooks and don't know how to figure interest on savings or credit. Millions of students dread their math classes and live in fear of the math section of the SAT. But, as Scott Flansburg demonstrates, anyone can put these phobias to rest and deal with essential everyday mathematical calculations with confidence. In Math Magic,Scott Flansburg shows the reader:

  • How to master the basics;

  • How addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division really work;

  • How to simplify calculations through estimation;

  • How to quick-check your answers;

  • How measurements work and how to quickly convert metric measures to more familiar ones;

  • How to figure tips and taxes and be sure you're getting the right change;

  • How to figure percentages; and

  • How to master algebra using the nine easy steps to algebra.

Math Magic is for all of us who need and want to improve our understanding of math. Flansburg makes math what you may never have imagined it to be: easy and fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Magic - a whole new way to do it!!!
I first saw Scott on a TV show where he was able to get the host to do this type of math very quickly.I was impressed.Math had not been my strong suit in school (some decades back!).I also had a very sorry ATTITUDE about math.I finally got the book, used it, and was amazed at the difference it made in both my ABILITY and my ATTITUDE. Since that time, I have regularly bought copies of this book to GIVE away to those who showed an interest and needed help.Knowledge should be SHARED and this is one super way to change how you do math, whether child or adult.

2-0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment!!!
Since I was a child, I was always considered gifted at mathematics. While I was very good at primary, high-school and university mathematics, and faster than my peers in any kind of mathematics, I had never tried (or thought of trying) to be very fast (like Scott Flansburg) at adding up a long column of numbers or multiplying 47138 by 269273 in my head. So when Scott promised to "reveal his secrets" for performing calculations at lightning speed, I decided to buy his book. I figured that if I was so good at mathematics it would be easy to do "speed math" if only "the secrets were revealed".

I regret to say that I have never been more disappointed in a book! While the book has some interesting and useful techniques for doing some specific calculations quickly (e.g. multiplying by 11 or squaring two-digit numbers that end in 5 or multiplying numbers in the 90s), it fails miserably at getting you to add up six two-digit numbers any faster than you could by doing it the normal way. Even after practising the so-called secrets, it still takes a while to multiply, say, 79 by 68, much less 47138 by 269273.

For example, his "technique" for multiplying 79 by 68 quickly is to do the following: work out 7 times 6 and remember that is 4200; then cross-multiply 7 by 8 (56) and 9 by 6 (54) and add them to get 110; multiply 110 by 10 (1100) and add this to 4200 to get 5300. While remembering all this, multiply 9 by 8 (72) and add this to get the answer 5372.

After all that, you are supposed to say, "Wow, Scott! That was easy." If you think that is easy, try doing it in your head. And with all the practice in the world, you will never get as fast as someone who can simply look at the numbers and tell you the answer.

There are no "secrets" revealed in this book to get you to do arithmetic faster, either mentally or on paper. All of the techniques discussed can be easily found on the Net. While I am sure that Scott deserves his title "human calculator", you will never become anything remotely like him by reading and practising the methods in this book. Like most celebrities, he just decided to piggy-back on his reputation to sell a book.

One more thing: less than half of the book is devoted to "techniques". The rest is "padding" with things like how to calculate tips and taxes, how to measure things like thea area of a piece of land, some information on military time, working with fractions (just like in elementary school) etc. There is an introduction to algebra but it is poorly presented; you will learn better from any school book on algebra.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Big Yawn
Even though I'm a finance major I've always find that I was a bit slow at mental maths so I bought the book because of the good reputation of Scott. However, I must say the author did a terrible job at making the book an exciting read.

Quite frankly it was borrowing! And this statement is comming from an avid reader who enjoys reading non-fiction and history books. I couldn't have made it pass the first five pages without yawning constantly. Believe me I tried to read it to see what I could have absorbed but the dialogue was bland, moved at a slow pace and was uselessly repetitive. I was finally forced to put it away to collect dust on my shelves. I am seriously considering returning it or dumping it.

My advice to anyone trying to improve there mental maths: Buy another book or go to a class!
To the authors: I know it must have taken a lot of hard work to write this book but it just did not meet my expectations. Sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice collection of problems for people that enjoy puzzles based on basic mathematics
When pocket calculators first became available, it led to the development of an entirely new class of mathematical problems. Of the ten digits {0, ..., 9} represented in the digital display, seven look very similar to a letter when turned upside down. The new problem was to pose a riddle and present an arithmetic computation where the result, when turned upside down, would be the answer to the riddle. These problems are given the general name "calculator puzzles", hence the first category in the title. Calculator puzzles are extremely simple and can be solved by students in the upper grades of elementary school.
The remaining puzzles are fairly standard mathematical puzzles and those generally considered "mental magic"; the level of difficulty is that of middle school. One example is:

"In his last will and testament, Abe E. Sea left 25% of his wealth to charity. He left 50% of the remainder to his wife, and 12% of the remainder after that to each of his two sons. The balance of $11,400 went to his daughter. What was the total amount of his estate?"

This is a book of problems where one category is quite simple and the others are a bit more complex but easily handled with the use of algebra. It is a nice collection of problems that can be used to sharpen and amuse people with an interest in puzzles based on basic mathematics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what the blurb describes. . .
This book was described as fun for kids and there was nothing about its text or layout that was age-appropriate for the range indicated.Maybe it would be a fun gag gift for accountants, but the math and the "tricks and puzzles" inside were overly complicated in both description and instruction. Also, the layout of the book was cheap and not in the least appealing visually, and the paper was cheap stock. I intended to give this book to a child who is extremely advanced in math and it was not even appropriate for him.I ended up giving it as a gag gift to the controller at the office holiday party. Definitely would not recommend this book for young people. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Several Ways to Skin a Cat"
"Rapid Math Without a Calculator", by A.F. Collins, Reprinted Citadel Press, NJ, 1956/1987/2006.(Originally ISBN 0-8065-1058-7).Soft cover, paged, illustrations & tables, & Index.8 1/4" x 5 3/8".

Author, noted mathematician & physicist, introduces basic arithmetic nomenclature, then focuses on methods including rapid addition & subtraction, short cuts in multiplication, division, fractions, finding square & cube roots, and concludes with useful tables & formulas and a brief introduction to magic with figures including magic squares, etc.

The short cuts in multiplying & dividing certain number setsby using the complement or sliding methods and use of "casting out nines" or "method of unitates" (sum of figures making up a number reduced to one figure) to verify answers is intriguing.

Current dependency on modern pocket-sized calculators can be devastating, for if they malfunction, persons not familiar with performing conventional or short cut arithmetic may be in a quandary, including the average person whether student, businessman, or homeowner. Collins describes techniques to evince rapid end-results using easily learned unconventional formats.Significantly, the book has been reprinted and updated and expanded since its original publication.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful !
Be careful about buying this book.In my opinion it is poorly written and as a intermediate level horse player it is not worth the amount of money being charged for it in either the Kindle or print edition.

The Kindle edition does not have a workable table of contents and there are tables that don't line up making it impossible to use them.
This is the poorest Kindle-ized book that I've downloaded so far.

If you have a Kindle you might want to preview this book before buying.

There might be some value in what this author is providing. However you will need to get by the amateur writing style, repetition and plugs for a betting outlet that sends him a bonus when you sign up (to be fair you get a bonus too).

This is not what I thought it would be and I am a dissatisfied customer.

And read that one 5 star rating carefully.The author is apparently reviewing the material added to the end of this book that was not written by the author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Learn what "buttoms" to push?
The only book dedicated to a specific HP-12C calculator that I have seen which in fact gives the reader a quality and professional presentations of "what buttons" to push when performing various financial calculations is the Professional Real Estate Problem Solving books by John Tirone. Presentation of the keystrokes in the Toy book is perfunctory, at best.
Professor Toy may have much math in financial calculations under his belt, but he can learn much from how to present the topic by reading Professor Tirone's book on the HP 12C and HP-17BII in real estate calculations.
Maybe both authors should get together on a book, but that may not be possible given the distances involved.

Many of us want to understand how the technological instruments that so pervade modern society operate.This book answers questions about one of those devices: the scientific calculator.Calculator keys seem to work like magic.They tell us, for example, that the cosine of 56° is 0.559192903. This book explores the simple internal calculator processes (called algorithms or programs) that produce this and similar results.Although the text focuses on the calculator keys that compute powers, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry functions, insights are also provided into simple programming, conversion between decimal and binary numeration, and perhaps most important, the structure of our numeration systems.Many people think that the processes that drive calculators demand advanced mathematical concepts such as Taylor series.However, high school algebra and a minimum understanding of programming (provided by this text) supply enough background to understand these algorithms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars In a niche market, this book is overwhelmingly effective
As I read this book, my interest was maintained, but I experienced a regular curiosity regarding the market for it. As a computer scientist, the subject of how calculators carry out the computations and how they are programmed is of interest to me. However, the niche for this material must be rather small. It is too advanced for a basic course in calculator math and there is not enough material for a numerical methods style course. Therefore, my conclusion was that the target market is the nerd who loves to understand how their gadget works.
Restricted to that arena, this book is overwhelmingly effective. You learn how to carry out sophisticated programming of the TI-83 and TI-84 calculators. Advanced mathematical computations such as the log and trig functions are demonstrated via background explanations and programs. In general, the author makes few assumptions regarding the level of mathematical expertise of the readership. For example, there is an extensive description of the complex numbers before they are used in a program.
People who want to know how things work will enjoy this book, but those who just want to work with things most likely will not.
