Social Science Curriculum Article C U R R I C U L U M A R T I C L E Discover eight great sites that will help you link the day's news to your curriculum and challenge students to look beyond the news! Connect the news to science, geography, social studies, art, math, languages arts, critical thinking, and technology! Also: Six on-line news quizzes for students of all ages. You probably use a newspaper in your classroom, at least occasionally, to teach current events. Newspapers connect your students to the real world and provide a better understanding of the world's events than almost any other news medium. Even newspapers, however, are limited in their ability to explain in detail the background of a story or to connect the real news with what students are learning during the rest of the school day. The sites featured this week can help you enhance and extend students' understanding of current events by linking them to other areas of the curriculum. Whether kids read about a tornado in Oklahoma, a war in Kosovo, or a corporate merger in Japan, one of the sites is sure to provide insights into the causes and effects of newsworthy events.

We recognize that the start of the 21st Century and the end of the 20th will actually be reached on January 1, 2001. The start of the third millennium and the end of the second will also be reached on the same date, January 1, 2001. This date is based on the almost universally recognized Gregorian calendar. Years in this calendar begin with the year 1 AD (January 1, 1 Anno Domini), not with the year zero. However, we are all starting to plan and to celebrate now! A turn of a millennium comes around only once in every 30 generations, and you and your students are here to experience it! Paul Tiger first came to the BCN as a information provider for fire departments in 1995. He soon took the position of Center Developer for the Emergency Services Center A former volunteer firefighter, Paul is now an active volunteer rescuer with the Longmont Emergency Unit ; the president of the Friends of the Longmont Youth Center ; spends time organizing and teaching computer technology to adults and children; and arranging donations of computers to deserving individuals and groups. In the fall of 2001, Paul took on the role of Volunteer Coordinator for the BCN. Marc Sobel joined BCN in Fall of 1998. He walked into the offices of BCN with a desire to contribute to Virtual Chautauqua . Virtual Chautauqua connects k-12 rural youth with performing artists via the interet. Marc knew he wanted to make a special contribution to this project and was very patient in explaining to BCN's nontechnical staff what he had in mind. Marc is recognized by BCN as being a 'Virtual Wizard' because of his vision and determination to build an interactive virtual performing artist museum teachers will use to create unique lesson plans from the Virtual Chautauqua material. There are maybe a dozen virtual museums on the web but this will be the first virtual performing arts museum.. We are extremely fortunate to have Marc's talents, skills and patience working on Virtual Chautauqua and teaching
