Mercury News | 07/17/2002 | Teachers Make Plans For Sept. 11 Lessons on ways to keep students engaged in current events as memories of headlines from Nixon'sresignation and other events in my 11, the kids asked me `Is this big http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/3678981.htm
Extractions: In less than two months, the United States will observe the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and teachers are already thinking about how to mark the day in their classrooms. In the Bay Area, a dozen middle- and high-school social studies teachers are at San Francisco State University this week for a seminar on ``Understanding the World After September 11.'' Led by San Francisco State faculty experts in areas such as American foreign policy, Islamic culture and civil liberties, the weeklong session is believed to be one of the first of its kind. Teachers face a challenging task: Sept. 11 falls just as children are heading back to school, and the beginning of a new academic year is always hectic. The first anniversary of a traumatic event can trigger intense emotions, and many students as well as adults remain fearful of a second wave of attacks.

Current Events - "The Big Draft Lie" By Kevin McCullough But these are not front line combat kids. Why it will backfire for those who try tomake that statement and his weekly column is posted on the RFM news website http://www.rfmnews.com/nm/publish/news_81.html
Extractions: It started a few weeks ago. This rumbling that is beginning to turn into a consistent 'talking point' that now seems to be thrown out as common as the day's weather forecast. When New York Congressman Charles Rangel first began talking about the Military Draft, he purposefully began a discussion that really had nothing to do with the issue of the draft itself, but rather the issue of race in the armed forces.

He has been looking forward to his first trip to the polls for a long time Declaring himself proudly as a Democrat, Fialka-Feldman said he has passed out campaign literature for gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Granholm and other party members. He follows political issues on the Internet with special software that reads text to him. Wearing a red, white and blue tie with donkeys on it, Fialka-Feldman said he plans to vote for Granholm, along with Proposal K for arts and parks.

According to a Readership survey conducted by the Audit Bureau of Circulations and the Newspaper Association of America, seven out of ten teenagers ages 12 to 17 reported they read a newspaper at least once a week, and 47 percent said the newspaper was their main source of news and information. It's clear that most students are familiar with the informational and educational value of newspapers. But what do they know about the contents and structure of the newspaper they read? Can they tell a news article from a feature or an editorial? Can they determine the accuracy of a particular news article? Can they find specific information quickly?
