Jones swung open the double doors of 406-408 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia one morning in 1914, admitting not only the brisk autumn air but a new era in banking as well. It was November 14th, the first day of business for the bankers' bank, the Federal Reserve System. That morning, as Jones politely answered the questions of curious passersby, twelve Federal Reserve Banks opened around the country. Their responsibilities included the establishment of a flexible supply of currency for banks and the control of the quality of cash in circulation. The need for a central bank became clear during the Bank Panic of 1907, when cash reserves fell perilously low as a result of banks' over investment in common stocks. The public lost faith in the banking system, businesses began to insist on cash payment, and a recession had developed. By 1912, a Congressional commission concluded that a central bank, separate from the federal government and administered by banks, was needed. A dozen geographic Districts were created, each served by a Federal Reserve Bank in the region. In Philadelphia, where the Third District is based, the Federal Reserve Bank grew rapidly. Initially, the Fed had 24 employees and four officers and borrowed extra staff as needed from a local typewriter company. By 1918, it had grown to 419 employees and 11 officers, necessitating a move to new facilities at 925 Chestnut Street.

In order to provide a satisfactory circulating medium for the early settlers of Utah, Brigham Young and his associates in the LDS Church established a church mint in 1848, and also placed in circulation paper money backed by the treasury and officials of the LDS Church. Coins were minted in 1849, 1850, and 1860; currency with Brigham Young's signature was placed in circulation in 1848, 1850, and 1858. Crucibles for minting were brought to the territory in September 1849, and the church mint was ready to resume operations. Dies were prepared for $2.50, $5.00, and $20.00 gold pieces to supplement the $10.00 dies made in late 1848. There was a slight change in the new design. The words "Pure Gold" were represented by the initials P.G. and the letters G.S.L.C. (for Great Salt Lake City) were added. The new coinage began in September 1849 and continued into 1851. The event, "Money in Print: Currency Authors Day," will be free and open to the public from 1-5 p.m. in Wilson Library, which houses the university's North Carolina Collection. The symposium will be educational for collectors and people interested in the historical aspects of out-of-print tokens and bills, said gallery assistant keeper Laura Baxley. "Most people dont realize how much can be learned from obsolete currency," she said. "Whether a person is a collector or is simply interested in North Carolinas history, I think any participant will walk away with valuable, new information." Visitors will be guided on a tour of the gallery, which contains Confederate bills and notes from the N.C. Colonial period. Symposium speakers will be available to offer informal appraisals of visitors currency collections.

Although cowrie shells, aggrey beads, ivory and cloth have served historically as currency, metals have also been used from the earliest times. Some pre-coinage currencies used for goods and services include: Cowries money is one example of odd and curious early primitive money Manillas entered the local economies as a form of currency and were a highly profitable item of trade. They circulated West Africa from the end of the 15th century to 1948. They were originally made of copper or brass and later composed of a mixture of other metals. Copper and brass manillas were heavy open bracelets shaped like house shoes, with bulbous ends. The quality of their ringing sound and the amount of "flash," or excess metal extruded at the joints of the mold, helped determine their value. The small manillas with flared ends were manufactured in Birmingham, England, for export to Africa. Larger examples, called king, queen or prince manillas, were status symbols and more a store of value than currency. The queen manilla shown here was worth about 75 small ones. During the mid 1500, Portuguese seamen were reported to have paid about 50 manillas for an ounce of gold. Bracelets, that were cast or hammered from copper had little circulation and were never used in connection with routine transactions. Instead, they served as reservoirs of wealth in a form that was easy to store and transport. This storage function is best illustrated in the very heavy bracelets of the South-Eastern Nigeria region. To create some of these bracelets, the artists poured molten metal directly into a cast in the ground called a puddle mold. As the metal cooled, it was wrapped into a circular shape and often even fitted directly to the wearer's body. Representing stored family wealth; these ornaments were usually large and heavy and were worn by people of high status throughout Igboland. Aside from their intrinsic value, they were also valued for their artistry.

Items of value were traded by barter. When Europeans first settled here, Maori and Pakeha traded in this way as well, until coins started to appear around the 1830s. European colonists brought with them a variety of coins - mostly British, but some French, Dutch and other currencies as well - and started using them for buying things. There weren't many bank notes around at that time, generally because the notes were of higher value than were needed for transactions. Early bank notes were issued by individual banks and payable only by those banks. At first, there were few printing facilities in New Zealand, so the durability of coins was a real advantage. In 1849, William Hobson, New Zealand's first Governor, proclaimed that British laws should apply to New Zealand and currency became subject to the Imperial Coinage Act of 1816. Because of this Act, coins in use became legal tender. Due to a shortage of coins in 1857 and especially copper coins, 48 traders throughout New Zealand (mostly retailers such as merchants, grocers, drapers and milliners) decided to issue their own penny and halfpenny tokens, some of which circulated until 1881. Tokens were profitable for the traders because the cost of producing them was well below their face value and many were never cashed in because they were easy to lose. They were a good source of advertising too, as each token carried the business's name.
