Many also feel overt or suppressed anger toward the group's leader(s). An AFF survey found that ex-members related to the terms "psychological trauma" and "psychological abuse" as descriptors of their experience. A large percentage, probably a majority, appears to need counseling when they leave their groups. So, to ensure that each sect is individualised, you should not only realize that my descriptions are merely templates, and not cast-in-iron cult write ups, and you should also consider such things as the sects attitude towards chaos, illumination, esoteric Arkatism etc..., which will vary from sect to sect. To deomonstrate what I mean about merging cult write ups, here are an example sect of Arkati from my own campaign, the Blackmorian Monks. On the northern tip of the Poldark Forest in Otkorion, about ten key miles out of the forest, is a monastery. It is made of stone, carved in the early portions of the Third Age. Two basalt pillars are either side of the entrance, carved with Arkati litany. This is the home of the Blackmorian Monks. The sect are all fanatics and spend their time in ritual preparations for going to fight chaos. Then they go forth, they do so in small groups of crack warriors, with other monks maintaining sorcery spells cast upon them to increase their ability. Generally the monks have little to do with the outside world and purchase small amounts of food and raw metals with the plunder they gain from killing chaos and other followers of the Deceiver (read: other Arkati).

The topic under consideration was “Satanic Worship.” Archdeacon Salem Dawani explained what led people to this kind of deviant worship: rebellion of children against their parents, depression, disorientation, and lack of confidence in society’s institutions. In addition there is lack of guidance at home, in the schools and in the work place. Satanism, he said, is not a religion and does not have an organized creed or philosophy. It is the rejection of religion that emerges at times when religious establishments are weak. Dawani identified what might prepare fertile soil for such worship. Where there are big gaps between the educated classes and workers and between the rich and the poor the cults find room to work. When religious thought is not renewed and blind fundamentalism gains ground, the cults find opportunity. When family structures grow weak, when parents do not care for their children, and when society becomes absorbed in superficial things, there the cults can find a home. In his conclusion Dawani stressed the need for social and religious establishments to focus on youth and their families in order to protect them from such phenomena.

    Extractions: A last word In the light of the evidence at hand, there seems to be no area in which the people of Ontario would be served by the government implementing new legislative measures to control or otherwise affect the activities of cults, sects, mind development groups, new religions or deprogrammers. To the extend that the movements and deprogrammers foster problems that are susceptible to legal resolution, the criminal and civil law appear already to afford sufficient avenues of punishment and redress. All that and other unresolved problems leave the study feeling somewhat uneasy.
