It is a gorgeous country, with nearly 300 unblemished beaches, picturesque colonial towns, culture, revolutionary monuments, enchanting countryside, beautiful people, excellent beer, potent rum and sizzling nightlife. Much of the defensive system created in those years to protect the city from attacks by corsairs and pirates remains in place. That is why it is impossible to walk through the area without encountering impressive fortresses like the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, the Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta, La Cabaña, and the most unique of them all, El Morro (Morro Castle), located at the entrance to the Bay. From here each night the lighthouse guides ships heading for Havana or passing by offshore. During the day thousands of visitors arrive to admire one of the most beautiful views that the capital has to offer.

    Extractions: History Introduction When the Nationalist Government banned the African National Congress (ANC) on 8 April 1960, the ANC began operating underground in South Africa. Outside the country the ANC started to establish itself as the official voice of South Africa's voteless masses. By the 1970s recognition of the ANC's legitimacy was growing, not only amongst the multiplicity of non-governmental anti-apartheid organizations, but also among foreign governments. The first missions were opened in London, Accra, Cairo, and Dar-es-Salaam. By 1980, the ANC had offices and representatives in 32 countries. The external missions worked to win support for the overthrow of apartheid by promoting the cause of the ANC and urging international economic pressure against the South African government. The missions also provided assistance to South African exiles. Following the banning of the organisation, Oliver Tambo, President General of the ANC left South Africa to head of the ANC's external operations. On 2 February 1990 the bans on the ANC and other political organisations were lifted. A process of negotiations between the unbanned organisations and the South African government ensued. In 1992 the ANC instructed its missions to collate and box their records for shipment to South Africa. These records were to form the basis of the official archives of the ANC, from which a true history of the ANC's role in the struggle against apartheid could be written.

The lessons are designed around viewing the video, but it is not necessary for students to have viewed the television series to complete the lessons. Although the lessons are written for middle and high school level students, some lessons could be modified for elementary level children; each lesson also could be modified and conducted at home. Each of the four lessons includes: recommended time needed to complete the lesson, a list of necessary materials, clear objectives, a teaching strategy, assessment recommendations, extension and adaptation ideas, and relevant national standards. His attempt was not successful; only in 1902 Cuba became an independent republic and Lopez's flag was adopted as the official flag. The three blue stripes are the symbols of the original three provinces. The triangle is a masonic symbol, here signifying liberty, equality and fraternity. The red color is for the blood sacrificed by the Cuban patriots. The year was 1849. It was a steamy hot day in New York City and General Narciso Lopez, of Venezuelan origin, had joined the fight for Cuba's independence. Exhausted from planning all that was entailed in bringing Revolution to Cuba, he sat a local park, and quickly fell asleep. He was concerned about the pending arrival in Cuba. He felt a flag was necessary to add patriotic fervor to the endeavor. When he awoke in the park, the colors of the splendorous sky allowed him to envision the would-be flag. Full of emotion, he went to his friend, a poet and soon-to-be patriot, Miguel Teurbe Tolon, who incorporated Narciso's ideas and designed the flag which was later sewn by Emilia Teurbe Tolon.

In 1898, the United States’ opportunistic intervention in the war against Spanish colonial rule, which Cuban patriots were on the verge of winning, frustrated hopes for sovereignty and independence. In terms of time, more than 100 years have passed since then; but in terms of history, much more took place in this Caribbean island than in the 19 previous centuries. FROM SPANISH COLONY TO U.S. NEOCOLONY Tomás Estrada Palma's assumption of power on May 20, 1902, with the consent of the U.S. military governor, Leonard Wood, who ran the electoral process, signaled the start of the neocolonial republic in Cuba. With the dissolution of the Cuban Revolutionary Party on December 30, 1898, two days before the official start of the U.S. military occupation, the delegate Tomás Estrada Palma, successor to José Martí in the post, delivered a mortal blow to the yet to be born republic. Cuba was already in crisis at this point, mainly due to Spanish colonialism, but also because of the U.S. military occupation and its consequences of hunger, poverty and unemployment. The fragmentation of the national revolutionary political organization and ideological confusion, with evident distortions in the revolutionary and anti-imperialist thinking of José Martí, exacerbated the situation.

''Ya tenemos casa (We have a home),'' says collection director Esperanza Bravo de Varona. Walk up a flight of stairs to the second floor of the Otto G. Richter Library, step through glass doors embossed with the Cuban national emblem, and into a sitting room of Cuban-style, cane-backed mahogany rocking chairs and marble-topped tables and floors. A colorful mural of stained glass windows and a balcony framed in ironwork, typical of Cuba's colonial cities, painted by Miami artist Humberto Calzada, adorns one wall. ''I wanted it to feel like a house in Old Havana that looks out to the sea,'' says Calzada, who donated the work. Stashed in the pavilion's 10,000 square feet of space are thousands of historical treasures, among them: ''Nobody in the world has this collection of exile periodicals,'' says librarian Lesbia Horta Varona. ``We would go around to all the Cuban pharmacies and markets collecting them every week.''
