Extractions: Herald Staff Writer For most of her life, Carmen Alea Paz has treasured a fraying caramel-colored piece of paper scribbled with the thoughts of a great man. The author was Cuban Independence War hero Jose Marti and the writing a reflection on the flag is believed to be one of his celebrated pensamientos. Paz, now a Cuban exile who lives in California, won the rare original and a certification of its authenticity at a Havana writing contest in 1948. ``It's a little piece of my heart,'' Paz said Thursday afternoon as she donated her Jose Marti note to the University of Miami's Cuban Collection, the largest compilation of publications, documents and historical memorabilia outside of the island. Paz's gift is the fifth original Marti writing the library has obtained. ``I have loved it deeply,'' a teary-eyed Paz said. ``It is a miracle how it came to be in my hands. Now it is where it belongs.'' ``It's a beautiful thought on the flag,'' said Esperanza B. de Varona, curator of UM's Cuban archives. ``A treasure.''

In the 1600s European powers struggled to control the country. After two wars of independence the Cubans won their freedom from the Spanish in 1899, only to be ruled for another 60 years by governments in the hand or pocket of the U.S.A. Independence from the US domination was finally won in the late fifties after more than two years of fighting between the Batista regime and revolutionary forces led by Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and others. US hostility to the new order culminated with the implementation of an economic embargo. This left Cuba getting all its support from the Soviet bloc, and by the mid sixties communism was taken on as the official ideology. With this political concordance came also the reliance on Soviet technical support and guidance. By the mid eighties criticism of the way the Revolution was developing reached a level that the government declared the need for an Era of Rectification. This involved a number of measures designed to answer popular discontent, and to assert a more indigenous path of development. Bureaucracy was cut back, a new elected local government structure was created. Surplus labour was directed into the construction of new housing, hospitals and schools. Some state farms were broken up into a number of workers co-operatives. In 1965 Che had left Cuba, critical of the island's wholesale adoption of Soviet influences. After 20 years his perceptions made sense to sufficient Cubans and a reaction took place.

Thousands of Cuban émigrés began to arrive in Miami in 1959, reacting to the establishment of a new dictatorial regime in their native land. They considered themselves exiles, not immigrants, because they sought temporary relief from the political, social and economic turmoil that beset Cuba when Fidel Castro took power in 1959. Between 1966 and 1973, Freedom Flights brought nearly 300,000 Cubans to the United States. Many moved to New York, New Jersey and California but most settled in Florida. Thousands also arrived in boats from Port Camarioca in 1965. This was a foreshadowing of the massive exodus of Cubans from Mariel Harbor in 1980, and the thousands of rafters that crossed the Florida straits in the 1990s. They, along with some eighty Indian families, relocated to Cuba in 1763 when Britain took control of Florida. From time to time, Cubans and Bahamians visited the island and surrounding waters to fish, salvage wrecks and cut lumber. In 1821, the island was granted to Juan Pablo Salas by Spain, who sold it to American businessman John Simonton for $2,000 that same year. The transaction took place in a cafe in Havana, and thus began the modern history of Key West. Thousands of Cubans fled to Key West at the onset of the Ten Years' War in 1868. With great skill and ideal conditions, Cubans transformed the cigar industry in Key West into a major enterprise. Small shops called chinchales sprang up all over town. By the 1870s, 29 factories produced more than 62 million cigars annually. The economy prospered and the population soared with the success of the cigar industry in Key West.

Extractions: The Cuban Constitutional Convention opened its session with signs of a determination to test the declaration of Congress, in its resolutions of April, 1898, that the people of Cuba, "are, and of right ought to be, free and independent." After pronouncing for universal suffrage the members discussed the proposition to make any foreigner who served on the Cuban side in the ten years' war eligible to the presidency. This proposal was made by the friends of General Gomez, who is not a Cuban, but whose sword has always been out of its sheath whenever the Cubans were fighting for their independence. A large and influential body of Cubans unquestionably desire to honor Gomez with an election to the presidency. He was the most prominent man in the Island, and it was feared in many quarters the most dangerous. His patriotism and his love for the Cubans have never been called in question, but many have doubted his ability to assume control of the new republic. Maximo Gomez y Baez was born in San Domingo in 1826. He was a soldier of Spain until he became commander of the insurgents in the ten years' war, 1868 to 1878. His name has been bracketed with that of Weyler for severity in fight and rule of terror. He showed no enthusiasm over America's intervention. He is popularly regarded as the man who showed the greatest military capacity on the Cuban side in the war, and that will give him a permanent place among the great captains. He is, of course, charged by the Spaniards with selling out to them when Campos played pacificator at Zanjon, but his little farm in San Domingo and his wife and children earning their living as music-teachers and seamstresses, while his son, at the command of the father, protects mother and sisters, and holds a clerkship, does not look like enrichment by bribery to say nothing of returning to plunge again into war in Cuba against, as he well knew, tremendous odds.

Extractions: After nearly two centuries of assaults by pirates and foreign adventurers Havana was captured by an English fleet under Lord Albermarle, backed up by fourteen thousand soldiers. Their booty amounted to over three and a half million dollars. In a few months Cuba was restored to Spain, and a new era of peace with great prosperity was inaugurated under the sagacious guidance of Captain-General Las Casas, who entered upon his duties in 1790. The Cubans remained loyal to Spain despite the deposition of the Spanish royal family by Napoleon. A party of moderates was formed, whose aim was to induce Spain to come to terms granting civil and religious rights to Cuba without impairing its subjection to Spain. This effort ended in a heavier taxation. President Polk expressed American sympathy by his proposal to buy Cuba for a million dollars. In 1858 the Senate raised our bid to thirty million dollars. From 1868 until the interference of the United States over the loss of the Maine the island was in a state of chronic revolt, involving incalculable loss to the people and to Spain, ill to be borne by an impoverished population but unmistakably foreshadowing their speedy ejection of the fool-tyrant. It was admitted in the Spanish Cortes in 1876 that the employment of 145,000 soldiers in eight years in trying to stamp out the revolt had been an utter failure. So it continued until the end. There were loud demands from the American people, voiced by the Senate, that the government should in some way intervene, in the interests of justice. It was proposed to recognize the insurgents as belligerents, and demand independence for the island, as Spain had completely failed, after two years of vigorous effort to suppress the rising, to reduce the country to subjection. On the contrary, her methods had inflicted terrible sufferings and industrial ruin upon the non-combatant population.]
