The group also wants to establish a relationship between Cuba and The New School's Graduate Program in International Affairs. This highly regarded International Affairs program has a track record of placing students in agencies and organizations in several foreign countries in Africa, South America, and Europe. The Graduate Program in International Affairs seeks to send students to intern in Cuba in the summer of 2003. The New School will present a course and special events on "Cuban Culture Today" Cuban Culture: In and Out of Cuba Today, a seven-session course on Cuban music, dance, art, architecture, film and literature begins on Wednesday, February 19 at 6 pm. This groundbreaking series of events brings together Cubans from Cuba and the Cuban Diaspora, along with other scholars, artists, writers, and performing artists for a unique and exciting overview of contemporary Cuban culture. In its fifth year and in collaboration with Cuba's Nacional de Escuelas de Arte, the University's international program, La Musica y Cultura Cubana, invites university students from across the nation to participate in this fully accredited course, licensed by the United States Treasury Department. From July 20 through Aug. 12, students from SCU and other universities will immerse themselves in Cuban music and culture. They will attend lectures in music ethnology, cultural development and the arts, participate in festivals, visit historic sites, and attend live performances in venues ranging from farm houses to "houses of tradition," from cultural centers to street performances by neighborhood congas and comparas.

Extractions: Horizon Staff Reporter As the government faced changes in Cuba, so did the family of Niva Tro, a chemistry professor at Westmont College. Tro was born in the United States, but his parents and two older sisters all came from Cuba in 1959. They arrived in the United States after "fleeing communism," Tro said. His father worked as the manager of a jewelry store in Cuba. After Fidel Castro gained control, people who were not members of the Communist party were either thrown in jail or forced to flee. In an attempt, unknown to Tro's father at the time, to keep the government from seizing possession of the jewelry store the storeowner broke into the store and stole the jewelry. In the morning Tro's father was accused of the crime and thrown into jail. Through the help of a Communist friend he was freed. He then left the country and went to Miami, Florida with his wife and two children. When the family arrived in Miami they had virtually nothing. They were given $200 in charity and went to Los Angeles, California. Even though the Tro family was thousands of miles away from Cuba, and Tro attended a public school that was b y no means predominately Cuban culture still permeated Tro's life.

The country is inhabited by 11 million people, with 2.2 million living in the capital city of Havana. Havana (La Habana) is the largest city in the Caribbean. Old Spanish colonial architecture remains intact and untouched by wars and revolution, though much of it is in the process of being restored. To return to the Table of Contents, click here SPAN 448 "Cuban Arts and Culture: Tradition and Innovations," taught in English, will introduce students to the study of the artistic and cultural manifestations of contemporary Cuba, and the extent to which traditional forms and innovative solutions have fused to create a complex national identity. The class will begin in College Park by providing students with a general background on the history of the country, literature and the arts. In Cuba, field visits in Havana, Pinar del Río, and Trinidad will expose students to both nature and culture through urban and country settings, national parks, and the built environment. The students will have the opportunity to visit the great institutions of culture (museums, churches) and meet with writers, artists, and filmmakers. The course will also include evening cultural activities and a recreational visit to an area beach resort where the group can explore the impact of tourism on contemporary Cuban culture.

Extractions: May 12 -24, 2003 About Cadiz, Spain Considered one of the oldest cities in the West, Cadiz lies on the Costa de la Luz region of Andalucia in southern Spain. Within the city boundaries are pre-Roman ruins, belvederes overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, a beach, and a quaint barrio antiguo. About the Summer Program in Cadiz Designed for graduate students who possess a working knowledge of Spanish, this program involves an on-campus module and an overseas module. Students will attend an international conference, "El Segundo Encuentro de Creación y Exilio: Cuba, contigo en la distancia" to be held May 19-23, in Cadiz, Spain. In preparation for the overseas portion of the course, work in the classroom at USF during the week of May 12 - 16 will consist of lectures that will give students previous knowledge about the development of Cuban culture in diaspora, from the XIXth until the XXth century. We will be discussing the concept of "diaspora" as a modern international situation as it relates to globalization, and we will explain how it affects the culture and the identity of countries in Latin America and Caribbean. During the week in Cadiz, students will attend academic panels about Cuban Culture, and will meet Cuban authors invited to the conference. The Program Director, Dr. Madeline Camara, will provide students with some works of these authors in advance to make the contact for students more useful. Both the Tampa campus portion of the course and the conference will be interdisciplinary in nature. Lectures will be in Spanish. The required final paper and discussion in class can be done either in Spanish or English.

Cultural exchange is the principal activity since the resources are so limited, and preservation and restoration are so expensive. Due to the lack of experience, we started our work with material for the restoration of XIX Century newspapers, in 1996. Then we continued with the donation of some equipment like microfilm readers, in 1997, and a word processor, in 1998, but we soon realized that any amount of donation would always be insufficient. The cultural exchange has proved to be more fruitful. We have co-Sponsored 1) A meeting of Cuban creative women living in Cuba and abroad, Havana, Jan.1996, 2) the first edition of "Caribbean Women Writers: a Dialogue," N.Y., May 1996. We have collaborated with "Thirty Years of Pradiso The ignorance of current Cuban literature in the USA is abysmal because of the U.S. blockade on Cuba. Only defectors are known here. Although the blockade is tight, it is made even tighter by fear, which imagines all kinds of revenges and penalties. In one of our most important projects, we have given more than three hundred Cuban Books to three libraries in New York City: Donnell Library, Baruch College and St. John University, that now have probably the best collections of current Cuban literature in the USA. Baruch College cooperated with this project by bringing additional guests from Cuba for the inauguration of their Jiribilla Collection. The Cuban guests-a writer, a publisher and the director of a scholarly institution-brought about 300 additional books, most of which were donated to the Baruch College library.
