Brotnjo beforehand had belonged to the ilirian province of Dalmatia which has it's administrational seat in Solin near Split, and from the third century, with the area of Narona around it. The writing on the gravestones testifies that Roman legions and cohorts were situated in the area and that Roman veteran soldiers were in pension there. Remains of roads, constructed in the time of the Romans are still visible today. Apart from that, under the Roman memorials, many objects of everyday use have been found.The most significant findings from the Roman era in the area of Medjugorje, can be found in the Catholic graveyard in Miletina, where there are remains of some ruin which had been made of Roman bricks, but it hasn't been sufficiently excavated. 2. The Beginnings of Croatian History At the end of the 6th century Croatians immigrated into these regions.The region of Brotnjo represented a tribal, political-territorial entity with a tribal regional chief. It got its name from Latin Sclavonia which meant the country of Slavs. Croats inhabited the Danube region in 7th century on the territory of the former Roman province Pannonia. At the beginning of the 9th century there was the kingdom of Pannonian Croats that rose against Frankish Empire in 818. By 1102. almost the whole Slavonia fell within Kingdom of Croatia and from then till 1527. in Hungarian-Croat state. Slavonia spread between Sava and Drava rivers and eastern Slavonia had 4 counties: Virovitica, Pozega, Vukovar, Srijem. In 16th century the Turks with the help of non-Slavic Vlahs of orthodox religion and Croats that converted to Islam occupied big part of Croatia and eastern Slavonia all the way to the river Cazma, up to the line between Virovitica on Drava and Sisak on Kupa and Sava. The Turkish occupation lasted till 1699. when the Christian army, together with Croatian troops liberated entire Slavonia except the most eastern part , Srijem. In 1745. Slavonia was returned to Croatia and three out of four counties were reestablished: Virovitica, Pozega and Srijem.

In order to avoid misunderstanding we shall rather use their descriptional name - Muslim Slavs. The reason is that the Croats in Bosnia are also Bosniaks. Indeed, many of them bear Bosniak as their second name. The meaning of Bosniak is simply - a Bosnian. In the Zagreb telephone book only (1994/95) you can see a long list of as many as 210 surnames of Bosnjak , with only one Muslim forename, and also more than 30 Bosnjakovic 's, with only 3 Muslim forenames. There is village Bosnjaci in Croatia (4,500 inhabitants prior to 1991, near Zupanja). I did not find any village of a similar name on a map of Bosnia.
