Extractions: Folk Dancing Swarthmore has a wonderful folk dancing club unfortunately there is no official page for it, so I'm unable to link to it. Students can take social folk dancing at Swarthmore that's what got me started. Now, however, I intend to continue showing up for the classes even though I won't be getting credit anymore. Scottish Country Dancing is offered year-round on Thursdays for an hour and a half. It's taught by Terry, a wonderful instructor and quite a humorous instructor. . There are many folks in the Swarthmore area who enjoy Scottish, and there are several balls throughout the year which bring in people from the whole area. Swarthmore faculty also gets involved the Biology department shows up in full force! English country dancing is usually offered in the spring. English is less structured than Scottish, as it does not have "steps" that you have to know, but this also means that it's more flowing and lends itself more to spontaneous improvisation. This coming semester (Spring 1997), there will be Scottish on Thursdays and some odd combination of dancing styles on Tuesdays. I really don't know exactly what is going on yet!

This is a note I wrote for inclusion in the soc.culture.scottish FAQ maintained by Craig Cockburn: Scottish country dancing (or SCD, for short) is a modern form of the `country dancing' popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century. It involves groups of six to ten people (most of the time) of mixed sex (most of the time) a »set« dancing to the driving strains of reels, jigs and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordion, flute, piano, drums, etc. (no bagpipes, mostly!). The dance often combines solo figures for the »first couple« in the set with movements for all the dancers, although there is considerable variation there are over 7000 different dances catalogued, of which maybe 1000 or so are of lasting and non-local importance. Many of these dances derive from traditional sources such as old manuscripts and printed dance collections, but a lot have been devised in the fairly recent past, say the last fifty years or so. This fusion of the traditional and the modern as well as its ongoing evolution are part of the attraction of Scottish country dancing. Think of SCD as a cross between square or contra dance (although there is no caller) and ballet; there are about a dozen basic figures which will get you through quite a number of dances, although many dances have their own quirks and specialities which make them unique and fun to dance. There is also more emphasis on »steps« than in, say, ceilidh dancing, but the basic technique can be learned at a week-end workshop or through a couple of months' worth of practice evenings once a week. Even though there are so many dances, you don't have to learn any of them by heart if you don't want to the programmes for balls and social evenings are usually published well before the event, so everybody can check their crib sheets. Also, at the event itself dances are often recapitulated or even sometimes walked through slowly before the music starts (although local custom may vary).

Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), based in Edinburgh, was founded in 1923 to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. Since then Scottish Country Dancing has spread all over the world. Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solo performances accompanied by bagpipes, Country dances are danced with partners in sets of two or more couples doing an exciting variety of formations. The music, performed live at parties and some classes, is provided by a fiddle and piano, or by a whole band. Dance tempos vary from lively jigs, hornpipes and reels, to the elegant, slower strathspeys. Interested in trying Scottish Country Dancing? Come by yourself or with a friend. Extractions: Australia (updated 28 May 2001) INTRODUCTION A variety of dance styles have evolved in Scotland, including Reels, Square Sets, Circle Dances and Country Dances (Flett, 1964, 1). The Reels have evolved into solo dances associated with the highlands of Scotland. The Square Sets have evolved into the Quadrilles, Lancers , etc, performed socially. The Circle Dances have come to include dances such as the Waltz and Polka : done by couples independently circling the room. Country Dances are performed in Sets by couples in two parallel lines, one of ladies and one of men. As the dance progresses, each couple progresses through the various positions in the set. Country Dances were introduced from England around 1700. Through the 18th and 19th Centuries, Scottish steps came to be included. In England, the popularity of Country Dancing declined over this period, virtually ceasing by the mid 19th Century. However, in Scotland it gained popularity. Country Dancing was done equally by the laird and the crofter (Milligan, 1976, 3). By 1900, most young people attended dance classes at some stage. In 1776, Edward Topham wrote, " I do not know any place in the world where dancing is made so necessary a part of polite education as in Edinburgh" (Flett, 1964, 27). A friendly hand should be extended to the partner. Always join a set at the bottom, but avoid walking through the set to get there or to another set. Also, don't pass a set in need of a couple, or leave a set once you have joined it. (Except under the direction of the MC, in order to allow more people to dancesuch as a fourth couple leaving to join two couples, making two 3-couple sets.) Stay in lines and places while sets are forming, as it is hard to count if everyone is moving about. The first couple in a set traditionally counts off the number of couples lined up. Listen quietly during all instructions. If you have any questions, ask the instructor, not other dancers. The question may also be of interest to others. At the end of every dance, you should thank your partner and clear the floor. Do not form new sets until the next dance is announce by the MC. This allows for a better exchange of partners and distribution of ability in sets, which is so important for a sociable evening. Also, it is more flexible and friendly NOT to line up partners for all of the dances ahead of time.
