What are we really looking for in life? What really is the meaning and purpose of our lives here on planet earth? This month’s article is the third in a trilogy of English Explorers that helped make Canada what it is today. Sir Martin Frobisher (Nov. 98 DCC), and Captain George Vancouver (Dec. 98 DCC) were all searchers for something more in life. They, like Captain James Cook, were all deeply curious about this mysterious planet that we live on. All were seeking to make sense out of the confusing jumble of facts and information that was flooding into their previously sheltered English world. Sometimes I ask myself: Why is English now spoken by hundreds of millions of people in virtually every country of the world? Why do most people of English ancestry live anywhere but England? Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, South Africa, etc. Perhaps it is because as seagoing islanders, the British were insatiable searchers for that which was beyond. From the ranks of such inexhaustible seekers emerged the greatest of the 18th century nautical explorers –Captain James Cook. James Cook had an unbounded curiosity and a deep interest in everybody and everything with which he came into contact. Born on October 27th, 1728 in Yorkshire, Cook’s father was an impoverished Scottish farm labourer and his mother a simple Yorkshire village woman. Cook began his sea life by lugging coal off the treacherous east coast of England. There he learned how to survive the storms, fogs, hidden shoals, and tricky tides.

Not only was he a master seaman, skilled navigator, accomplished cartographer, eloquent writer, fine artist, respected diplomat and clever dietician (another example of oceanography's far-reaching subject areas), he was a brave leader and careful scientist. (I wouldn't mind those credits..!) Perhaps more than any other explorer or oceanographer in history, Cook laid the foundations for our scientific understanding of the seas. Only a little is known of Cook's developmental years. He was born in the Yorkshire Village of Marton on October 27, 1728, to parents of modest means. They soon moved to Ayton and, as was common in those days, James was apprenticed (i.e. indentured) to a store-keeper, for whom he worked for about year and a half. But ever an ambitious lad, and undoubtedly influenced by the salty pub-side tales of sailors from a nearby harbor, he soon ran away to Whitby, a small port some thirteen miles from Ayton, and offered his services to the mate of a coal fleet. Charmed by his enthusiasm, he was hired aboard and thus began his career as a man of the sea, a sailor. Cook worked his way up the ranks and apparently studied astronomy, mathematics and map-making on his own. During the Seven Years war between England and France, Cook was sent to the St. Lawrence Seaway aboard the king's ship, Mercury, where he endeavored to map the waterway in between battles with the French in Quebec and the occasional Indian. Having already earned his Master's (Captain's) Certificate and having demonstrated his skills at cartography, he was the Captain of choice for the Queen's mission to show the British flag on a voyage to Tahiti with members of the Royal Society, who were to observe the transit of Venus across the sun (as good a reason for a voyage as any, I guess!).

Pacific News Member of Pacific Explorers Library Captain James Cook (by Michael Dickinson) In 1768 Lieutenant James Cook, RN, set sail in Endeavour on a voyage of exploration and scientific investigation. After observing the transit of Venus across the sun at Otaheite in the Pacific, Cook sailed south-west to disprove or otherwise the existence of a 'Great South Land'. By 1770 Cook had reached New Zealand. He circumnavigated and completely charted the north and south islands before continuing west. In April, he sighted the east coast of New Holland (now called Australia) and sailed north along the coast before anchoring in what he named Botany Bay. He then continued north to Cape York and on to Batavia in the then Dutch East Indies (Jakarta, Indonesia). During the four months voyage along the coast Cook charted the coastline from Point Hicks (Victoria) to Cape York (Queensland) and proclaimed the eastern part of the continent for Great Britain. Cook was not the first person nor even the first European to 'discover' Australia, but he was the first to accurately chart a substantial part of the coastline and to fix the continent in relation to known waters. His explorations have also been given significance because, due to a variety of circumstances, they were followed up within a few years by a British expedition to settle the 'new' continent. For these reasons, Cook is considered a major figure in Australia's modern history. Numerous places in Australasia, particularly on the east Australian coast and New Zealand, have been named after him or his vessel, and many of the names he gave to parts of the Australian east coast in 1770 are still used (eg Cape Tribulation, Botany Bay, the Whitsunday's).
