Extractions: tame birds of both sexes available. Some of our smaller suns. This species is considered to be one of the most spectacularly colored species of parrots. Younger birds have much more green, and their brighter colors appear over a period of about 6-8 months. The full adult yellow coloration on the chest, head and back is reached in two years. Sun conures normally sleep inside their nest boxes. Babies sometimes even sleep on the bottom of their cage with their feet up. A sleeping box is recommended for them. It is similar to a nest box with a perch inside and no bottom. Not only are they brilliantly colored, but they make wonderful pets. They are like kittens with feathers often rolling around with each other or wrestling with you. Their antics are very entertaining to watch as well. Suns are known as loud birds. It is possible to train the birds to be more quiet. A routine is very important. Ours are only loud when they see us and think it is time to play or eat. We have sixteen sun conures plus youngsters.

Extractions: Almost all of the conures can be divided into one of four groups that differ from one another in some major way concerning breeding habits. There are a few "outsiders" that do not fit clearly into any of the four groups, but these are the exception to the rule and can usually be placed as intermediates between two of the major groups. What follows is a rundown of the conures most commonly available. The first group, and the largest in body size of those commonly available, is the green conure group. These are classified scientifically under the genus name Aratinga. (The macaws are classified under the name Ara, and these large green conures are, as the name implies, very closely related to the macaws. This relationship has been demonstrated by the fact that hybrid offspring from a cross between a noble macaw and a mitred conure have produced fertile eggs.) This group consists of the blue-crowned, mitred, cherry-headed, red-fronted, white-eyed, Finch's, green and red-throated conures. The blue crown is a bit afield of this group (toward the macaws), but its breeding habits and seasons are very close to the rest of this group.

But most of all, they get LOVE ! We understand that you may have spent a lot of money to purchase your bird. You may feel that you have to get a return on your investment. All we are asking is that if things just haven't worked out, PLEASE don't make the poor bird pay the price by being neglected either physically or emotionally or put in a less then perfect home. Birds need as much attention and interaction as a child does.Without that attention they will actually go insane and develop bad habits

Extractions: Most texts show the gold-capped, jenday and sun conures to be three distinct species of the same genus, named Aratinga . This arrangement shows the relationship between the three to be no different than the relationship between the sun conure and the mitred conure. To the majority of aviculturists who have worked with suns, jendays and gold caps, however, it is obvious that a much closer relationship exists between these three conures than just the genus name Aratinga would imply. The gold-capped conure ( Aratinga auricapilla ) is a medium-sized conure from southeastern Brazil. Gold caps were imported in limited quantities during a short period of time before it was realized that some countries were exporting birds originally captured in Brazil (a country that does not allow export). Fortunately, a reasonable number of these original imports were purchased by competent aviculturists. These birds have proven to be reliable and prolific breeders in captivity. Indeed, we at Voren's Aviaries have produced over 1,000 gold caps, jendays and suns over a period of 15 years. They are usually willing to nest at any time of the year if the conditions are right, but they will not begin a new round of nesting if the weather is too hot. They have been known to nest up to four times per year. The number of clutches per year is highly dependent on how long the babies are left in the nest before being pulled for hand-raising. The usual clutch size is three, but four chicks are not uncommon. Hand-raised babies make excellent pets, and gold caps have by far the best pet personality of the gold cap, jenday and sun conure group. They are especially sought after by pet shops that have had experiences with them. This is because they tend to maintain their tameness without handling longer than either the jenday or sun conures.

Extractions: Considered by many to be the most beautiful of the commonly available conures, the sun conure has enjoyed an elevated popularity status in the world of companion birds for many years - and with good reason. Their multi-faceted personalities will delight even the most experienced of bird lovers, and their breath-taking coloring will attract the attention and pique the curiosity of any non-bird person! If there's one conure that people will recognize on sight once they've seen one, I'd have to say it would be the beautiful sun! The talking ability of the suns is a bit limited although they sometimes can learn to speak several words quite clearly. Their natural call can be loud and raucous, although I personally believe that young, hand-fed sun conures that are raised -away- from and out of earshot of the parents calls do not learn the "scream" that has been associated with the conure family. I base this belief on personal experience; my 3-year old sun conure was hand-fed by myself during a time when we had no other birds in the house except for quaker parrots, and she very rarely vocalizes with that high-pitched "scream" that conures are usually famous for. She does have a "Come Here!" call that is higher in tone than the quaker's call, but it doesn't seem to be any -louder-, per se, just higher pitched. On the other hand, nor has she ever learned to utter a single word, despite being cage-mates for the past 2 years with a quaker that has an extended vocabulary.

Extractions: Blue Crown Conures (Aratinga acuticaudata) are in the Artinga family of Conures. Other common names are the Sharp Tailed Conure or the Blue Headed Conure. There are 2 other sub-species; Aratinga haemorrhous and Aratinga neumanni. The natural range of Blue Crown Conures extends to several countries in South America that include: Columbia, eastern and south west Brazil, Venezuela, northern Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In there native habitat Blue Crown's have been known to allow humans to get quite close. Life expectancy is approximately 30-40 years. They are one of the larger species of Conures weighing between 150-180 grams. Length from head to tail is appx. 14.5 inches. Coloring is predominately green , with pale olive under the wings. The head, including the forehead, crown, lores, ear coverts and cheeks are dull royal blue. The eyes are surrounded by a bare white patch of skin and the iris is reddish-orange. The upper wing coverts are chestnut-brown, and the tail is green while the lateral tail feather are brownish red with golden olive tips. The upper mandible is horn colored with a black, sharply pointed tip and the lower mandible is solid black. The legs are pinkish grey. Juvenile birds have less of the blue coloration on the head and the mandible is completely horn colored. Although they are not one of the more colorful species of parrot, they more than make up for it with their endearing personality.
