Avery Humanity faces a daunting task as we enter the 21st century: Feeding a larger, more affluent world a better diet while at the same time conserving wildlife habitat, biodiversity and ecological integrity. The world is in the midst of the largest surge in global population in human history. Population growth rates peaked in 1996; however, the inherent momentum of population growth will drive the global population to 8-9 billion people before it stabilizes. This represents a 50 percent increase over the current population of 6 billion. Based on recent trends in fertility rate, current predictions call for a peak world population of 8.5 billion reached about the year 2040.[1] While population growth has been the focus of world attention over the past 30 years, it alone will not be the greatest challenge. Affluence will also increase global demand for farm resources. As living standards rise, a shift occurs from subsistence diets comprised mainly of grains, roots/tubers, and low animal protein consumption, to high-quality diets comprised mainly of varied grains, meats, dairy products, eggs, and consumption of diverse fruits and vegetables. The critical difference between the two is that it takes many more farm resources to produce a single calorie of meat or dairy products compared to cereal grains or tuber crops. Thus, the shift to a more affluent diet, higher in proportionate levels of animal protein, increases the demands on farm resources.

    Extractions: by Betty Branch A lthough "Sustainability" is a concept much prized by HopeDance aficionados, my 1992 dictionary lists no such word and my Spellcheck rejects it! Only four years or so ago did I first hear about "sustainability" from the lips of Architect Professor Polly Cooper, no less. Only then did I recognize the essential relationship between environmental conservation and intentional communities. Yet those have been two of my major interests for the past 30 years! Intentional communities enable many collaborative activities that foster environmental conservation. Unfortunately not all communities practice these. For example, friends sometimes decide to rent or buy units in the same condo or apartment house, yet make no attempt to carpool, etc. OPTIMAL sustainability exists only within such communities when they DO practice Environmental conservation. Neighbors can enjoy the kinds of advantages that prevailed in California through the late 1950's in the early suburbs (post WW2) as well as the long established rural areas with their barn-raisings, quilting bees and growers' co-operatives. These communities enabled pooled skills/talents, increased buying/selling power, exchange of services (including informal, as needed, childcare/elder care) and much much more. "Neighborliness" was taken for granted in those days.

The Key Centre's activities may touch on all of these and more, but will focus particularly on study of management systems involving harvest for subsistence or commerce. Conservation and Sustainability of Wildlife Use Use of wild species of plants and animals is an integral part of the life of every human community. The formal economies of northern Australia are fundamentally dependent on such activities. Obvious examples include the consumptive use of grasses (the pastoral industry) and the non-consumptive exploitation of plants and animals for the entertainment and education of visitors (the tourism industry). Other commercially important activities require comprehensive displacement of wild species from the places they previously occupied and substitution of exotic species for which there is a market demand (the horticultural and cropping industries). Whilst intensive use of land and its plants and animals currently dominates a relatively small part of the north Australian landscape, evidence is accumulating rapidly that the more extensive uses have also led directly or indirectly, to many adverse changes in wildlife populations. Declines in the range and abundance of granivorous birds and small mammals are among the more obvious.
