The Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines as the nation prepares for possible war then go to work, hoping to talk teen-agers into serving their country. If a recruiter makes the same request from some private schools such as Archbishop Hoban, St. Vincent-St. Mary or Walsh Jesuit the request is denied. But they also provided an escape clause for private schools, where about one in 10 kids in Ohio and nationally attends classes. Laurie Sellick, the mother of a senior at Firestone High School in Akron, is uncomfortable with the schools' giving anyone especially the military easy access to her son. The physicians associated with the dispensaries provided their time gratis and, in turn, obtained valuable experience with a wide variety of cases. Most medicines at this time were still compounded by pharmacists according to the physicians' prescriptions and were not expensive. A meeting of interested persons was held in November, 1871, officers were elected and a constitution adopted. The New Haven Dispensary was opened in December in quarters on Crown Street. A charter was obtained in 1872. Shown here is the annual report for 1873. From November 1872 to November 1873, the Dispensary treated 1073 patients. The bill for medicines for 1873 was $213.40 and other expenses amounted to $491.22.
