Extractions: Pat Jordan isn't just playing with words when she says she teaches "applied" pre-algebra at Waterford High School. You can't apply algebra to real-life situations more practically and appropriately than Jordan and her students have done in what they call their "Ramp Project." The Ramp Project began when Jordan pointed out to her students that the wing in which their classroom is located lacks access for students with disabilities and that in another classroom in the wing there is a student who uses a wheelchair. "It was a situation that bothered me," says Jordan, "and I thought my students might be able to use math skills to solve the problem." Jordan credits a discussion at a CEA teaching workshop with refreshing her memory on how a project that helps someone can be a powerful motivation for young people. With that in mind, Jordan introduced her students to Lisa, the girl who uses a wheelchair, and asked them to consider how applied algebra might provide some help. "When they met her," the teacher says, "they began to realize they could make a difference in her life."
