FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Beverly Bobroske, president of the connecticut Association of boards of education, said, The bottom line is, to quote Mark Twain, Out of the public http://www.cea.org/NewsDesk/voucher release.htm
Extractions: For immediate release: June 27, 2002 HARTFORD We are disappointed but unflinching in our determination to fight all divisive and counterproductive proposals to divert public resources to private and religious schools. That is how teachers, school administrators, parents, school boards, and civic and religious leaders members of the Connecticut Citizens Alliance for Public Education (CAPE) today summed up their reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in an Ohio case allowing the use of taxpayer-supported vouchers to send children to private and religious schools. Reverend Fidelia Lane, CAPE chairperson and a retired Congregational minister, said, As the dust settles on todays national ruling, the focus of the voucher debate will be on state lawmakers. Already, at least 26 state legislatures, including the Connecticut General Assembly in the mid-1990s, have rejected voucher proposals. Connecticut legislators have recognized that vouchers are a very bad idea, and we continue to remain confident in their capacity to separate good public policy from detrimental public policy.

Extractions: The State Action for Education Leadership Project is part of the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds' larger educational leadership initiative designed to prepare, support and sustain a leadership cadre in each state that can transform schools and school systems to produce improved academic performance for low-income youth. Through this project, state government and education leaders compete for grants to support research, analysis and preparation of legislative and administrative actions that will prepare, support and sustain a group of education leaders (principals and superintendents) in each state. Fifteen states have been awarded three-year implementation grants: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia. To see a list of state contacts, please click here. Project management and support is provided through the Council of Chief State School Officers. The project is guided by a National Consortium comprised of the five state-based organizations whose members have primary responsibility for state education policy: the CCSSO, the National Conference of State Legislatures , the National Governors' Association , the National Association of State Boards of Education and the Education Commission of the States . In addition to enabling education leadership reforms in states receiving grants, the project benefits all states through research and findings produced and published by the National Consortium.
