One might think that in these technologically-advanced days, it is easy for a composer to get his or her music out there. But the music world is such a confusing placewho's out there to help composers? There are so many composers, so many legalities they need to know, and so little money to go around. How are artists supposed to learn what they need to know, promote their music, and continue composing? Luckily, there are a number of service organizations out there set up to help composers wade through the muck of the music industry. On top of the list are the performing rights organizations, ASCAP and BMI . Both protect composers' rights and ensure that composers receive payment for performances. In addition, the organizations assist in the commissioning process, work with other organizations to encourage commissioning, help composers network, advise artists on how to support themselves through their music, and serve as advocates for new music and composers. That's where all of these service organizations step in.

The centerpiece of the program is the preparation, public performance, and CD recording of a work by each student. Each student will work with the YCP Ensemble (a professional ensemble comprised of flute, violin, cello, and piano) to prepare the performance of his or her piece, with coaching from the faculty. The faculty will include Peter Gilbert, Orianna Webb and Dr. Margaret Brouwer, head of CIM"s composition department. This is a wonderful opportunity for young composers to get a lot of exposure to new music, some insight into how they can continue to grow, and a terrific performance of their music, plus get tools that will be helpful with college or conservatory applications in composition. The program packs a lot of activities into a just week, making it quite affordable compared to other similar programs.

Models and methods for synthesizing real-world sounds as well as musical sounds will be presented. The course will be organized into morning lectures covering theoretical aspects of the models, and afternoon labs. The morning lectures will present topics such as Fourier theory, spectrum analysis, the phase vocoder, digital waveguides, digital filter theory, pitch detection, linear predictive coding (LPC), high-level feature extraction, and various other aspects of signal processing of interest in sound applications. The afternoon labs will be hands-on sessions using SMS , the Synthesis ToolKit in C++ , Matlab, and other software systems and utilities. Familiarity with engineering, mathematics, physics, and programming is a plus, but the lectures and labs will be geared to a musical audience with basic experience in math and science. Most of the programs used in the workshop will be available to take home.
