Extractions: * With summer coming, think of gardening. Even if you've never done it before, growing a small patch of flowers and/or veggies will bring you in touch with nature and give you some excellent, inexpensive food in the bargain. Renters, see if you can get a small co-op plot for the building. Even growing in pots on a patio or fire escape can do great things for your soul. Skip the chemicals and learn about organic methods. Here's where recycling your food waste and gray water comes in handy. You can keep your plants pest free with dilute soap solution and diotomacious earth. It's really wonderful to watch plants germinate and grow right before your eyes. And even veggie haters can't resist the fresh sweet taste of home grown tomatoes, peas and beans right off the vine!
Extractions: 4 July 2001 Dear Frank, I want to thank you for your kind and reasoned response to my posting. It is obvious that we disagree on whether or not the behavior patterns of animals are learned or instinctive. I think that we will have to agree to disagree on this point, and that is fine with me. Back to your original premise, which is more important, I agree that The United Methodist Church certainly erred in the presentation of the article. They had a chance to speak out against violence, and instead of doing so, actually condoned and encouraged it. It is here that the true failure lies, for if the church does not stand against violence, as outlined in the Bible, then we are indeed in perilous times. Instead of praising Bush, the violence should have been condemned. Bush was present, he could have stopped it. He chose not to do so. In the same light, the church was presented with the material, and chose, in effect, the same path as Bush.
Extractions: 8 July 2001 Dear Heather, Roger and Others: You are most definitely not alone in your thinking about "freedom" for our companion animals. Linda J. Howard wrote an excellent essay on this subject entitled 'Protected or Prisoners' at http://www.all-creatures.org/articles/ar-protected.html You might want to read it, because it reflects her mental struggle with Keats. Being responsible in preventing death and violence does not mean that we have to keep an animal in a cage, but it might mean keeping them in an enclosed yard or on a long leash or a tethered run. And sometimes the inner emotional struggle is quite high, but I believe we also need to look at the greater picture of doing no harm as it was in Eden and as it will be in God's Kingdom. The problem we all face is where to draw the line.

Extractions: Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) is a volunteer nonprofit group that helps improve the quality of life for people with HIV. The group offers emotional and practical support in keeping the love and companionship of support animals. It also provides its clients and the general public with information on the benefits and risks of animal companionship. PAWS is dedicated to preserving the human-animalbond between clients and their companion animals. Those served are people with AIDS and the animals with whom they share their lives. The group provides comprehensive care for approximately 500 animals in San Francisco. Its mission is to keep those animals with their guardians for as long as possible. PAWS Externships and Internships The objective of this one month externship is to educate future and current veterinarians about the significance of the human-animal bond and about the operation of a community-based, non-profit organization. This program is coordinated by three veterinarians, Ilana Strubel, Will Carr and Ken Gorcyzca (all LGVMA members) and the PAWS executive director, Erin Farrel, and has been on-going for the past 6 years. During the externship, students will work on a project at the PAWS office in San Francisco, attend local veterinary meetings, as well as a PAWS Board meeting, participate in the PAWS Pet Food Bank, and give a public presentation at the completion of their externship. In the past, student projects have included compiling proceedings from an international PAWS conference, revising the Safe Pet Guidelines, and assisting in the development of pilot programs. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in outreach programs by volunteering with a local humane society, a mobile veterinary service for the homeless, and local veterinary clinics.
