There are cobblestoned medinas with higgledy-piggledy lanes and old world charm; ports bristling with white sailed dhows; tropical moons rising over white beaches; the sun setting over the ocean in a riot of reds and oranges; and a colourful history of sultans and soothsayers, plantantion owners and eloping princesses. But despite all these charms Comoros and Mayotte remain the least frequented and least travelled of all the islands in the region. This may have something to do with the islands' reputation as a backwater, or it just might have something to do with the political coups, civilian riots and seccessionist plots that come and go with seasonal punctuality. Not for nothing has Comoros been nicknamed Coup-Coup Land.

Extractions: afrol.com, 22 September - Comoran Minister of Foreign affairs yesterday informed that a "schedule had been set, laying out the stages of the process leading to a referendum which would ultimately reflect the future of Comoros." Three years after the declaration of independence by the island of Anjouan, the Comoran government now sees hope for a national reconciliation. Only the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) is hindering the process. The separatist crisis in the Comoran island of Anjouan threatened peace in the region, and had done so for three years, Mohamed el Amine Souef, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Comoros, yesterday said in the UN. In August 1997, two of the three main Comoran islands, Anjouan and Moheli, sought to sever links with the main island Grande Comore, citing economic mismanagement and political neglect. The island declared its independence from the Comoro Republic and hoped to reattach itself to France, like neighbouring Mayotte island. With a population of more than 230.000 people it is the most densely populated island in the Comoro archipelago.

Comoros Time and Date Comoros and Mayotte History Back to Top The Comoros was inhabited by people of Malay-Polynesian descent by the 5th or 6th century AD and possibly earlier. Others came from nearby Africa and Madagascar, and Arabs became important. The islands did not appear on a European world map until 1527, when they were depicted by the Portuguese cartographer Diego Ribero. The first European known to visit the archipelago was the Englishman James Lancaster about 1591, but the dominant foreign influence in the islands remained Arabic until the 19th century. Diplomatic relations with France were resumed, a new constitution was drawn up, and Abdallah was reelected president in late 1978 and in 1984, when he ran unopposed. He survived three coup attempts but was assassinated by European mercenaries in November 1989. French intervention in the Comoros removed the mercenaries and permitted multiparty presidential elections in 1990. Saïd Mohamed Djohar was elected president but, in September 1995, he also was killed in a coup led by the same mercenaries who had earlier assassinated Abdallah. Again, France intervened and elections were held in 1996. Egypt Maps

Extractions: The ICRC carried out several missions to the Comoros in 1999 in order to assess the humanitarian situation and to hold talks with the civilian and military authorities and with officials of the National Society. During one of these missions, the ICRC was informed of the release of four detainees whom it had registered in December 1998. [34] The last of the Botswana and South African peacekeeping forces withdrew from Lesotho in late April and early May. These forces had been brought in under the aegis of the SADC in September 1998 in order to restore order in the country [35]. In addition, the past year also saw the continuing trial of members of the Lesotho armed forces charged with mutiny after the events of 1998.

Extractions: The trials of police and military personnel accused of mutiny following the events of 1997 [2] and 1998 [3] continued into 2000. A total of 25 members of the police and three military personnel, all of whom were receiving ICRC visits, were tried and sentenced. The general elections originally scheduled for March, then for October, were further postponed until 2001, and this prolonged the political instability which had beset the country for several years. Conflict flared in September between the chiefs of two villages and an associate of the King, prompting intervention by the security forces. Tension subsequently spread to the rest of the country, as this local problem brought to the surface more generalized social and political discontent, accentuated by a deteriorating economy. Demonstrations, some of them involving clashes with the police, took place at the instigation of the unions and of political groups opposed to the monarchy. The National Society treated more than 250 casualties during these confrontations.
