Facilitated Communication A paper published by The American Psychologist concluding that in controlled research settings people with disabilities were unable to respond accurately to label or describe stimuli unseen by their assistants, and that the responses are in fact controlled by the assistants. http://www.apa.org/journals/jacobson.html
Extractions: Schenectady, NY Abstract. Countless people throughout the world are not able to communicate adequately in speech. They may have cerebral palsy, head injury, or Down syndrome, or may have been diagnosed as having intellectual disability or autism. Intelligence tests based on expressive language underestimate their capacities, and because they cannot express their language they are often thought not to possess it. Their thoughts, ideas, needs, and desires go unspoken. They are trapped in a wordless prison. . . . In facilitated communication training, communication partners provide these people with physical support to help them overcome their neuromotor problems and develop functional movement patterns that will allow them to use communication aids. Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory Our research provides Lucent with innovative, competitively superior technologiesfor high quality true multimedia communication (integrating text, data, voice http://www.bell-labs.com/org/1133/
Extractions: The Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory at Bell Labs has a history of producing ground breaking technological advances - including the invention of the electret microphone and fundamental contributions in the fields of echo cancellation, speech production and hearing, automatic speech recognition, and the coding of audio, speech, image and video. Our research provides Lucent with innovative, competitively superior technologies for high quality true multimedia communication (integrating text, data, voice, audio, image and video). We work on various aspects of this challenge including: Capture, generation, transmission, and storage of multimedia signals (e.g. high quality microphone arrays, speech synthesis, audio and speech coding, image and video coding, message management, etc.) Recognition, interpretation, and interaction with multimedia content (e.g. speech recognition, natural language understanding, information retrieval from web pages, text, speech, image and video, etc.) Translation among the different media of communications (e.g. email-to-speech, fax-to-email, etc.), Integration of the above techniques to realize virtual environments, natural user interfaces and secure transactions for future computer and communication systems.
