Extractions: In 1992, there was a great deal of hooraw and foofaw about the 500th anniversary of the start of the invasion of both continents of the western hemisphere, which has been crassly described as "discovery" ever since, by dominant society historians (and everyone except indigenous peoples and their survivors). During this Quincentennial period there was an outpouring of educational materials, mostly more of the same biassed and stereotyped history. This has now died down a bit. Columbus Day is not as big a school holiday as (in the U.S.) Thanksgiving. But the Quincentennial occasion also gave rise to some self-scrutiny, and some that was prompted by Native groups, activists, historians, and educators. From one of the best sources comes an explanation for teachers certainly in Native schools if any are doing conventional mainstream social studies, but primarily for educators of non-Indian students as to why (and how) to revise what they teach. This page will select from materials reviewed and present links-to reviews of books (and occasional AV materials) especially well-suited for incorporation into standard social studies, de-mystifying and de-mythologising what most U.S. children are still taught. It will also present relevant modern documents statements by Native groups or leaders. Below from one of the best sources is the philosophy of this page:

The attacks on Columbus are ominous, because the actual target is Western civilization Columbus Day approaches and this year has a special meaning. Christopher Columbus is a carrier of Western civilization and the very values attacked by terrorists on September 11. To the "politically correct," Columbus Day is an occasion to be mourned. They have mourned, they have attacked, and they have intimidated schools across the country into replacing Columbus Day celebrations with "ethnic diversity" days. The politically correct view is that Columbus did not discover America, because people had lived here for thousands of years. Worse yet, it's claimed, the main legacy of Columbus is death and destruction. Columbus is routinely vilified as a symbol of slavery and genocide, and the celebration of his arrival likened to a celebration of Hitler and the Holocaust. The attacks on Columbus are ominous, because the actual target is Western civilization.

Extractions: Most people in our area don't really pay attention to Columbus Day other that they won't be recieving any mail. I wanted to do something to commemorate the day so I created this installation on the campus where I teach. Each of the yellow flags have "Columbus" and "Colonize" printed on them. The red flags have 'survive' and "live" printed on them. I created this work completely annonomously. I wanted people to "discover" the artwork and make their own conclusions about its' meaning. The flags are formed into a medicine wheel design. I thought the shadows worked nicely.

A celebration is a birthday party for which we put candles on the cake, forgetting imperfections, glossing over errors, and raising our glasses in unadulterated praise. ... An observance examines the whole event, puts it into a modern as well as a historical context, examines the world in which the event took place its mindset, ecology, demography, religious outlook, sociology admits to the existence of both positive and negative aspects, and communicates the true significance of the event, a significance which if properly understood, resonates as much today as in the time when it happened." Mobile-Eyes On Indigenous Rights: Conquering Columbus 1) Encourage your schools to teach the truth about columbus' genocidal war against (http//aistm.org/fr.getinvolved.htm) 3) Transform columbus day by working http://www.freespeech.org/fsitv/html/eyes_columbusday.shtml
Extractions: Conquering Columbus Our latest "Mobile-Eyes" programming, airing the weekend of October 12-13 on Dish Network and some cable systems, helps debunk the myth of Columbus as a hero, exposing the truth of the genocide that occurred as a direct result of his arrival to this land. The campaign will feature footage from the Four Directions-All Nations March and the Columbus Day protests in Denver, augmented by interviews with activists such as Glenn Morris, Russell Means, and Lakota elder Victoria Chipps and profiles of organizations such as the Native American Rights Fund, Rethinking Schools, and the Traditional Support Caravan. Documentaries will focus on issues such as the impact of the Columbus legacy, assimilation, the effects of colonization, the struggle to protect cultural symbols and identities, appropriation of land, and more. Columbus Didn't Discover Us: The American Indian Movement, or AIM, began their campaign to end the celebration of Columbus in 1992 in preparation for the 500th anniversary of his landing. Since then, AIM and their allies have protested Denver's Columbus Day parade every year in escalating demonstrations. In October 2000, over 130 people were arrested stopping the Columbus Day Parade.

Extractions: The UI Board of Trustees has the power to eliminate "Chief Illiniwek" at any time. However, despite the fact that it is a divisive symbol that creates a racially hostile campus, contributing to the barriers to real racial equality and education at U of I, the BOT refuses to do so. As the anti-"Chief" movement reaches a critical point, we continue to demand that the BOT vote to remove the "Chief"! Join us on September 19 for a rally grading the BOT on their performance as representatives of OUR University. Speakers will include Sean Hunter, President of the Student NAACP, Uma Pimplaskar from the Graduate Employees Organization, Keri Kles, a UI graduate student, and others. Participants will be able to give the BOT their own grades and then deliver them at the rally marches to the BOT offices in Henry Administration Building.
