Menard's pioneering work on the demographic, economic, and social history of the colonial Chesapeake region during the last three decades has garnered him a reputation among early American scholars as one of the founders of the modern field of historical demography. Menard trained at the University of Iowa and received his Ph.D. in 1975. He has sustained a vigorous publishing schedule since the 1970s and produced a steady stream of seminal studies on topics including colonial mortality, labor relations, agricultural economics, capital formation and trade, and migration patterns, among others. Menard co-founded the Historical Census Project at the University of Minnesota, now under the auspices of the Minnesota Population Center, and has published several articles on the design and technical characteristics of the historical census samples created at Minnesota. Professor Menard's work includes many of the landmark studies in colonial demography. His essay on "The Maryland Slave Population, 1658-1730: A Demographic Profile of Blacks in Four Counties" is the seminal study of colonial slave demography, and has been reprinted multiple times. His classic essay "Death in the Chesapeake: Two Life Tables for Men in Early Colonial Maryland" established the Southern pattern of extremely severe mortality in the early eighteenth century.
